The anesthesia was just right for such a long procedure, a little heavy for a cleaning the following year. In between, Dr. Feigen identified the (nondental, but glandular) source of infection which 2 other vets had missed, in an urgent visit. The services here cost me $2600 for cleaning under anesthesia, $4775 for 8 extractions including 2 exposed roots (major surgery). They do not keep animals overnight but dog was fully awake for discharge both times with clear airway, and no raspiness or cough. The vet tech assisting is 1 on 1 with your pet from start to finish and never leaves their side. Our dog Padme had a growth in her mouth that ended up being cancer. Dr. Clayton helped us with the diagnosis and options and always advised what was best for her and us and never what they could bill. He called us on days off and tried to help us get connected with the oncologists at Angell memorial. He truly went above and beyond and we cannot thank him enough or recommend him enough. All of the staff was wonderful there as well. Cannot recommend highly enough. Also, we learned the hard way. Please get your dog's mouth checked. Our new rescue cat came to us suffering from stomatitis. Our regular vet gave us plenty of background reading material and recommended full dental extraction. She also referred us to this clinic. It took several months to get the initial consultation and several more before we could schedule the surgery. I'm sure Covid and the surge in adoptions were partly to blame. My boy cat developed chronic diarrhea, right after his teeth cleaning. The diarrhea never went away and caused him to remain very thin. He recently was struggling to eat enough food to maintain his weight. He ate lots of food constantly. This clinic came highly recommended with the caveat that it is VERY expensive. There were some communication problems about the time of the appointment. Plus, we were led to believe that all treatment would be likely be done the same day. Staff was pleasant until pressed about the details of the schedule. They then became testy. After performing a CT scan, the doctor suggested an extensive oral surgery, involving many extractions that would take 5-6 hours to perform. Even so, there was no guarantee that this would definitively alleviate our dog's discomfort. Plus, our dog is 16 years old. (5 hrs of anesthesia can have quite dire effects in an older animal.) Of note, the fees seem to be structured by the time length of the surgery... roughly $1000+/hr. This arrangement cannot help but result in influencing the vet's decision re: treatment(if even unconsciously). I would suggest that the client seriously consider another opinion before tossing such a larger sum at these folks. read more

Wow - five stars for these guys!! I was referred to Veterinary Dental Services by Angell after my dog broke a canine tooth and needed a root canal and crown. My dog is a rescue and has pretty bad anxiety. I was really nervous about the whole procedure as it was a couple visit to complete. I can't say enough good things about our experience. The staff was amazing, so caring and accommodating to my dogs anxiety. They do not receive your dog and crate them until it's their turn if they have anxiety like mine. They asked me to stay and comfort her until it was her turn. To me that was huge!!! The work that was done was done extremely well and I can rest assure now that my dog is not in pain and won't have ongoing issues. I would give ten stars if it was an option!!! I'd put the quality and sophistication of medical and dental care at Veterinary Dental Services in Boxborough, MA, in the same league as medical care (for humans) at Massachusetts General Hospital. We were privileged to meet Dr. Shope more than ten years ago; Dr. Shope and her practice were really impressive then, but, boy, she and they have achieved new levels of excellence, and acclaim, over the past ten+ years. Everything about our experience at Veterinary Dental Services was superb. Our dog ended up having many dental issues (an exam under general anesthesia, and digital x-rays were required to discover them), and we are very fortunate that we were in the right place, and under the care of the right people, to remedy our dog of her ills. If you have a pet that needs dental care, I suggest that you ask very specific questions of the person/people who a veterinary practice refers to as a Veterinary Dentist. I unknowingly became suspect when I heard a few Veterinarians referred to as "dentists," many years ago (leading us to meet Dr. Shope). They were not/are not board certified Veterinary Dentists. We brought our dog Mick in for a consultation and from the moment we stepped in the door, we knew we had made the right choice. The practice ran ahead of schedule (as we arrived early and they took us early), and our appointment with Dr. Shope was wonderful. My dog has special needs and the staff took the time to review his extensive history, never making us feel rushed. So, I chose Veterinary Dental Services "few and far between" specialty practice and a one day event given the facility is 52 miles from home. I trusted in reasonable fees - given a policy of no fee quoted prior to in-person consult. In hindsight, I was setting myself up for unnecessary expense and a full day away from work. COST: $1614.37. By comparison: a local vet quoted me $800. My high school staffer recently had 4 impacted wisdom teeth extracted under sedation for $1200. Pet Insurance is no relief: Embrace Pet insurance covered a total of $60 (paying $390 for a wellness policy). Wow -- that's an awesome fee for pulling a baby tooth from my pup. SERVICE EXPERIENCE: I was asked to arrive at 8:45 a.m. sharp (left my home at 6:30 a.m. to make it) to find there was another procedure scheduled before hers. My pup was kenneled until early afternoon and I lost a full day's work for the 12 minute actual extraction procedure. Surely a 3 hour window for my pups care would have sufficed. We are very pleased with the service and entire staff at Veterinary Dental. Our last visit, to have a tooth extracted was on 11/6/12. Dr. Shope, Genel, the office manager and the entire staff went out of their way to fit our dog in, staying late to accommodate us. This will be the third time that I will be taking my Maine Coons for dental services to see Dr. Shope. Every time I go, I am made to feel welcomed by the staff, especially Genel! Ideally, my cats would benefit from visiting the dentist every year, but the price is quite steep! Both of my cats have had a history of gingivitis. One had fractured teeth that I would never have known about had I not taken him for a cleaning. My other cat suffers from tooth resorption (Dr. Shope really took the time to explain to me what this is), and he undergoes multiple tooth extractions because of this autoimmune condition. This most recent time, I was thankful that the staff was able to do the necessary pre-op blood tests right before my consultation, so that I did not need to take my cats to a regular vet (the less time in the car the better for them)! Dr. LaVan performed vital pulp therapy (basically a root canal) on my Yorkie yesterday. He had to have it done or his bottom canine tooth would have punctured his soft pallet cause more pain than he may have already been in. Nothing freaks me out more than leaving my pup in the hands of others but Dr. LaVan & her staff made me feel at ease about leaving my little guy with them. I'm happy to report that my Yorkie is recovering nicely and will soon be back to his barky self. Dr. LaVan right from the beginning made my dog as well as myself try to feel at ease in her exam room. She treated my dog with allot of care and gentleness and when over all of the option to treat my dog's malocclusion but she didn't pressure me into choosing one option over another (who knew that that make braces for dogs?!?!?!?). She gave me the pros & cons to all of the option and let me make the decision that was best for me and my dog. Her office staff was courteous as well as very informative. Doctors are wonderful at Veterinary Dental, prices are very high. Office staff may quote different pricing depending on who you speak to. Also be aware that your pet may be the second scheduled surgery of the day, which mean they may have to wait until noon for their procedure. After the procedure, be sure to ask all your questions bec in the evening, forbid there are more questions or an emergency there is no contact telephone number. Also, ask to speak to the doctor after the procedure. I, unfortunately, picked up my dog at 5pm and did not speak to the doctor and my poor dog whimpered all night. No pain meds were suggested for a "cleaning" . The office manager called me back in the evening after I left a message. Who wants to speak to the Office Manager, I, the dog owner want to speak to the Vet. The next day, my poor dog is still whimpering & mushy. I called my vet inquiring what to give my poor dog. No dog should suffer ~ After I have my own teeth cleaning, sometimes my gums/teeth hurt too ~ and I take Tylenol. Dr Collins perscribed Medicam, along with my vet. The following day, my poor dog was bleeding from his rectum, There was blood all over my house. At 4am, I took my dog to the Vet Hospital in Woburn, MA who perscribed Flagel, an antiobiotic. It appears that Yorkies should never take Medicam. Well, $476.00 later, I reconnected with Vet Dental Services to relay my chain of events and ask that I be reimbursed the $476.00 from the $1000+ paid a few days earlier. No, Dr Collins would not pay the Vet Hospital bill. Clearly, its all about the money and not the care of the dog ~ read more

I brought my Boston Terrier in today for an evaluation, because I know her short face can lead to dental problems, and I had noticed some decay. I was taken in right on time, and both the tech and the vet were interested, responsive, nice to my dog, and were using the information I had provided in my history. The treatment plan was clear and the education I got on my dog's dental anatomy was interesting. I got good answers even to the hard questions I asked, like "what if I don't spend $1800 on my dog right now? How long would be the longest I should wait before things would get worse?" I didn't feel judged for not doing it right away, because I did have some sticker shock and needed some time to process. Vet was great and took her time explaining my dogs extensive surgery to remove bone cancer in the job. Unfortunately the support staff was less than ideal. My estimate was incorrect more than once and I was presented with the wrong (higher) estimate to sign upon checkin. I was given an estimated pickup time and told I would be called with updates and any changes. I did not receive any calls or updates and when I called to check they kept pushing pickup time later and later. I ended up sitting In the waiting room waiting for the vet to be done another surgery before I could get my pet, who was audibly crying in the back room for a very long time. Start to finish, my experience with the Veterinary Dental Services was first rate. The facility was spotless and every member of the staff from front desk to operating doctor was helpful. Dr. Carle took time to explain and show in books and on a model what exactly was happening with my cat's teeth and how they would repair them. Afterwards, they had before and after photos and xrays and notes about how and what to do for the next few days for me to take home with me. This document was so helpful because it was hard to remember everything they were saying when all I was wondering about was my kitty. I referenced it many times after I got home to be sure I was doing everything correctly. From the moment I walked in the door, it felt like they were in the whole process along with me. My cat had multiple teeth removed due to resorption and infection. It was a scary experience for me to think about but I could not have felt more at ease or confident that she was getting the very best care.
