Last October I walked into a US Cellular store in Des Moines, Iowa to inquire about switching services from Verizon to US Cellular. The sales associate was very friendly and explained that not only could I save money on my plan but I could trade in my current phone and get a new one. I would pay $23.30/month but receive a promotional credit of $19.95/per month after the first three months for 2 years. I explained that I am in Mexico for several months each year and need cell service there. She told me that I can suspend my service and get a sim card there. So, I was going to save money on my current plan and get a new iPhone for under $100. Everything sounded good, so I agreed. As we were going through the paperwork, she then told me that my phone was not eligible for a trade in because it was an iPhone 6 not 6s but no worry, I would make an initial payment of approximately $100 but could sell my phone to make up for the difference. Sounded good, right? First I noticed that my cell service was MUCH less reliable "in the middle of anywhere and everywhere". I was somewhat surprised when I couldn't get service in Sioux City, Iowa and was shocked when I couldn't get service in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota. I had to turn on roaming to call US Cellular to find out what was going on. The representative told me that they are continuing to expand their cell service coverage. He told me that I could use up to 512mb of data roaming for free. I was NEVER told that I can turn on voice roaming and not get additional charges. Second, after the first three months of payments, I was not seeing my $19.97 credit being applied to my account. I called US Cellular and they said they didn't see a promotion on my account. I had to go to the store to talk to my sales representative. She explained that she would have to do a little finagling to get my credit applied on my account. It took an additional 3 months and multiple phone calls before the credit started being applied. Third, I found out that I can NOT suspend my account under the current promotion unless my phone is stolen or lost. The representative I spoke with implied that I could "lie" about my phone being lost. So I will be paying monthly service for FIVE months while in Mexico without the ability to use my phone. I called US Cellular to see if I can cancel without paying any penalty. They told me that I would have to pay $419.40 for the phone and there was nothing they could do. My statement states that I am available for an early upgrade if I pay $279.60 which I was willing to pay to get out of this. So I went to see my representative at the store to straighten things out. She no longer works there! I talked with another representative who told me there was nothing she could do. Calls to US Cellular customer service and retention department were no help. I was totally mislead and I can't believe that there is NOTHING you can do to alleviate this situation with my having to pay $419.40 and report this to the Better Business Bureau and other agencies. FYI it was the U.S. Cellular located at 3801 Merle Hay Rd in Des Moines. And I will add that the sales associate could only say "sorry" and as I was leaving, I saw the store manager returning from lunch. He would not make eye contact and quickly walked by. Must be used to this.

update: a few months later, and it seems some changes have been made, most likely completely…read moreunrelated to my poor review. however, despite the loss of actual customer service/repair personnel, the staff has been friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. although they are still busy at times, if you go at whatever the off hours might be, it's a snap to get in and out without killing your day.

They are preying on people that are often culturally diverse for this area The Cricket store at 5911 Douglas Ate. 400 is run by managers Rodrigo and Stephanie and some counter flunkie named Katia This crew bounces from store to store and makes decisions based on race as to who gets preferential treatment I bought a pop button to attach to my phone for holding it. The thing lasted exactly 4 days before it broke. When trying to ask for a replacement as obviously it was defective from the factory, it became clear I was the wrong race and was denied a replacement. However, my boy went into another Cricket store with other sales people and got it handled. I've dealt with Cricket alot when living in California. Out there they understand that their parent company is AT&T and they can afford to make customers happy for phone accessories that are sometimes defective from the factory. In Cali they actually use better judgment In Des Moines it seems these three are intent in earning promotions by screwing customers over, after all making sure no returns are ever considered/done makes the books look good for corporate. Shameful business practices. Just keep pushing if you're considering accessories from these fools. Go online. At least you'll get a fair return if something goes wrong.

While I'm not a T-Mobile fan boy and haven't really been impressed by their customer services as a whole... I had a five star experience yesterday with a young gentleman names Paul at this location. I was in for a warranty replacement and was genuinely impressed with this young man's demeanor and the care he took for the customer service he provided. I've worked in IT support for 25+ years and I'm probably not the typical knowledge level of a customer he runs into day to day and minute to minute, but he quickly adapted from breaking down the basics to matching me at my more elevated level. I think this is a often overlooked skill when it comes to customer service. The abiliity to read a person and adapt to match them at the level of support they need. Too often support will talk over a persons head or infuriate you because you feel like you are being talked to like you are in elementary school... Within minutes Paul and I had just clicked. In full transparency prior to meeting Paul my experience with T-Mobile hadn't been great. Two or three calls with T-Mobile and a back and forth with Assurant who manages the insurance for T-Mobile now... It wasn't great. But Paul was the shining light at the end of a long dark tunnel and he deserves to be recognized as such.
