The steak tacos are delicious! They are made fresh and have more meat on the tortilla versus other Mexican restaurants in town

I will say, Vera Cruz has some great tacos. I think that they're better than those that I'd find in the Normal area, but are a bit pricey for what you get. I got the lengua and steak tacos along with rice and horchata, and will say that those lengua tacos were pretty darn delicious. The rice was the best i've had (in the area) and probably will be back if i'm craving some real authentic tacos. read more

My friends and I eat here all the time and have to say that this is a very good, authentic Mexican restaurant and we really enjoy eating here! It is a small, family owned place that makes great food - I usually get a couple tacos and some chips & salsa. The tacos are perfect. I ordered the three tacos w/rice and beans and was pleased to see they have tongue tacos. The tongue was perfectly done. I can't speak to the other meats, but it is a hard sell to move away from these (although they also have tripe so... next time...). Both red and green salsas were flavorful, and the red had a nice spice. The rice and beans were even good. Best tacos I've had in IL. Get there early for lunch particularly if you are eating in. While looking for something to eat on my lunch break, I scoured google maps for something new. Veracruz stuck out to me due to its review and pictures of delectable Mexican cuisine. I walked in and ordered 3 carne asada tacos. Each come with cilantro and onion with 2 lime wedges on the side. Each bite was better than the last, but the last bite was the saddest because I wanted more. My only complaint is that I wished I ordered more tacos. Very disappointed! I called and placed my order for 4 burritos and they get 3 out of the 4 burritos totally wrong. I called to inform them of this and all she said was "what do you want me to do?" Are you serious? All I wanted was for them to get my order correct. The lady is pretty much arguing with me saying that I ordered incorrectly. Here is the funniest part, I placed the order in their language, as I am Hispanic and they still told me I placed it wrong. 2/24/15 - I love this place. Great food here. The wait can be long during peak hours since the number of workers is smaller than a chain restaurant, but it is worth the wait. 9/14/17 update - I still love this place. It's best to arrive as close to 11am as possible for lunch because there is usually no line right at 11am. Soon after a long line forms and the availability of seating diminishes. This is clearly a hot spot for Mexican food in the Bloomington area. The size of the lunch crowd supports that. And I often see regulars. My coworker eats lunch here with a small group of people every Friday! My regular order is normally the chicken burrito, which I absolutely love. It has never let me down. True authentic Mexican taste. The burrito does not automatically come with any sides of rice or beans as is the case at Taqueria El Porton, but it is outstanding. Today I deviated from my normal order and decided to try the chicken taco combination. The order includes 3 tacos and a side of rice and beans. I did not see a burrito combination option on the menu. The tacos were good and were heavy with chicken. I personally would have preferred a little less chicken, but appreciate that the taco was not bare. It was so full that eat time I picked it up toppings would fall out. The rice and beans were warm when served but not hot. I felt they could have been warmer. Before I finished they were cold. I don't think I will order the tacos again because in my opinion, the burrito is a much better option. Of course I will be back. I love this place and it will remain in my lunch rotation. read more

The food was just ok and we didn't get all our food for take out. We tried calling for a good 30min and the line was busy. The place wasn't busy when we left. The salsa wasn't very good. I've tried almost every taqueria and American zed Mexican food joint in town and this is hands down my favorite.. I just polished off a carne asada quesadilla that came with bell peppers and just the right amount of spice.. They even entrust guests to grab as much fresh made salsa (which were signed and dated for freshness) as their meals require.. I've also enjoyed chipotle chicken tacos here and the proportions of onion and cilantro are just right.. I always end up with a bill around 6 dollars so I buy their $1 house-made tortilla upgrade to meet the $7 debit card minimum read more

Another good restaurant in the Blo No area that I really enjoyed. Small place limited seating and you order at the counter and then grab a seat. Prices are reasonable 8 bucks for 3 pollo tamales rice and beans and a drink. Service is fast they get the food out to you table in a very short time. The tamales were in corn husk or you could choose bananna leaves as well and were excellent. I traded one with my buddy for a El Pastor taco and it was awesome seasoned well with Cilantro and lime. Best tacos and horchata in Bloomington-Normal. If you want authentic street tacos this is the hole-in-the-wall place for you. You have to order at the counter and bus your own table, but it's well worth it for the quality and freshness - make sure you try the guacamole salsa. My stepfather was Latino he was amazing and always cooked authentic Mexican meals. So, I have some pull when it comes to this cuisine. I've been to just about every Mexican restaurant in town here's how I would rank them 1. Veracruz 2. La Carniceria Mexicana 3. Tony's Tacos 4. Taqueria el Porton 5. Hurradura (mostly for margaritas) ---------------- 6. Fiesta ranchera....honestly just not good food, not fresh, not even really authentic food. And crappy service. But if your idea of authentic Mexican is cheddar cheese and jar salsa go for it! So Veracruz has amazing al pastor tacos and just about everything else. Google authentic Mexican food dishes before you go and they will most likely have them! I got the homemade tortilla for my quesadilla and never looked back! Even the sauces were above any other Mexican restaurants. The horchata is also really good! Give these good honest people some business! You won't be sorry! read more

It was a little hard to locate the first time, but once I found it it was well worth the effort! Their carne asada tacos were awesome and their salsa in one of the best I've found in the area... It has both flavor and heat. To top it off, both literally and figuratively, they have three sauces: a red chili, a green chili, and an avocado one.. All three are spicy and flavorful... The avocado one is my favorite. I mix it with the sour cream when I order the chicken quesadilla and dip them in it. Wonderful. The chicken quesadilla is the best I've ever gotten in a restaurant. Very clean restaurant, though a little hard to find in the shopping center. Food was excellent. Being from Texas I didn't have high expectations, but the food definitely held its own. Extremely authentic and very good. I had the chorizo tacos, and they were very tasty--not oily like chorizo can be. My friend ordered a side of queso dip. I saw the lady working write the queso dip order down on the ticket. When we received our food there was no queso dip. When we asked for the queso dip the lady working (same lady who took our order) acted like she had no idea what we were talking about. She finally brought us a small side of nacho cheese dip. It was disgusting and was not at all authentic queso dip. Also, the chorizo in my burrito was burnt. Very disappointed with the food. read more
