First time here and had a wonderful experience! Started with a Chufly (Brandy, Ginger Ale, Lime) which was a super unique taste. Ordered an Arepa Reina Pepiada to split with the better half and a Pinchu entree and both amazed me. The better half ordered the Lomo Saltado which was also great. The fish tacos are very good although they fell apart halfway through eating (the corn tortillas got soggy). It was very empty on a Friday afternoon at lunch time. We were shocked it was not busy. Well lit, cool decor and an interesting menu. The lunch menu is simple. My brother likes their Chorizo. He ordered the Spanish style bruschetta which came as three little breads w toppings and chorizo. My aunt ordered Trancha Pecha chicken which was a good sized sandwich and she really liked it. I would come back here to check out their dinner menu because it seemed their lunch menu was a bit limited. Perfect! Perfect! Perfect! The place was hopping on a Friday night. I sat at the bar and had an exceptional view of the precision and attention that the lead bartender paid to each and every drink. Wished I wasn't heading to a meeting or I'd been sampling the offerings instead of sipping my coke. I had the beef and pork Tostones on my sampler. I really liked the poem but I LOVED the beef. There were so many tasty looking items on the menu. I hope I'll be traveling to Springfield more often. read more

Yea... not completely bad but not great. My sandwich was just so messy and hard to eat. Fell apart too easily and the meat inside fatty. No bite I was I able to bite thru the sandwich..... either too hot, fatty or the wilted lettuce pulled everything out. Fries were fair and only had water to drink. I ordered take out - a chicken arepa & a beef arepa. The beef arepa was my favorite & absolutely amazing!!! The cornbread was so moist and flavorful. The shredded beef was super tender and packed with flavor and spices. Then they topped it off with a bunch of fresh toppings. I will definitely be getting another beef arepa next time I'm in town. The chicken arepa was good too, but not quite my thing. It was like actual chicken salad that had been warmed on the cornbread. Although it tasted good, I'm just not a huge fan of chicken salad personally. The beef arepa is where it is at! read more

Hidden behind the iHop on Wabash ave. in an unassuming strip mall lies Roots Latin Grill. We stopped by on a summer Friday and without reservations were seated at the bar. Fine by us as it was entertaining watching the bartenders make interesting cocktails and visit with guests. Our cocktails were beautiful and did the trick of erasing the anxiety inducing traffic stress that is 80 west. For dinner we had empanadas, an arepa, and the papas a la Huancaina. The chicken empanada was definitely one of the tastiest and juiciest empanadas I have ever had the pleasure of eating. The papas reminded me of a warm potato salad my grandma would make it she were Peruvian and didn't love mayo so much. Hard to stop eating. Roots is worth the drive from... well wherever you may be going that takes you through Springfield. read more

I live 3 1/2 hours away in Indiana, and I'd drive here again just for the food. I had the arepas sampler (guava and queso, beef, chicken) and my wife had the sandwich de chola with fries. We shared. I'm happy living where I do, but if I thought about moving to Springfield being able to frequent Roots Latin more often would be a primary motivation. Great menu and just the type of place you don't tend to see outside bigger cities. I've been here 4 times and have tried something different each time - all excellent. Hands down my new favorite place in Springfield! Can I go back tomorrow? I have been missing empanadas so much since moving to Springfield and Roots has answered my prayers! Please don't walk into this establishment and ask for tacos and salsa. I have no doubt the staff would handle it with aplomb, but honestly. Go in and tell the server what you like (in general terms) and what to avoid. Our ensemble consisted of one of the pickiest eaters I've ever met (my brother), and a grown man who avoids healthy green foods my ex-husband). Our server suggested 4 tapas and we all agreed it was one of the best meals we have ever had. The drinks were exceptional, wine selection very nice. The atmosphere is relaxed, which is so much more appealing than stuffy. I enjoy relaxed fine dining. At Roots, you can have it all. read more

We went here for dinner with family. We started with the tostones sampler (pork, mango, and cheese). I thought the pork was the best thing I ate all night. For the main course, I had the Brazilian steak, which was extremely tender, well seasoned, and cooked perfectly. My mother in law had fish tacos, which she really liked. For dessert, we ordered the tres leches cupcake, the flan, and the passion fruit mousse. All were quite good. Only suggestion: make a reservation. Their space is limited. But it is absolutely worth it. Also, the kids menu is hysterical. My son got "I'm not hungry" which is mini corn dogs. Well definitely be back. read more

So I had a mixed experience here, the food for one part was super good! Tostones, so good! (Beef is the best one for sure). Lomo Saltado, super good. Caipirinha and Mojito, good and good. Tres leches, a bit dry to my taste. But in general it was a really good food. Hence the 5 stars. Now the not so great was, we got there around 6:10pm, Friday but we did not have a reservation (did not know we could have done it) and the host told us they couldn't seat us on a table but we could seat at the bar but if we could be done in 1 hour so we were like sure that sounds fine but we did think "Can you make a reservation for the bar?" But anyway we sat and there were 2 bartender a female and a male bartender (who I think is named Colton, sorry if it is not). He was the most friendly and fun bartender, very enjoyable, talking to us and being nice. The other bartender was nice but in a couple opportunities we heart talking of basically how we needed to be done quick and fast, to a point Colton (I believe) basically told her "it is going to be fine" and she did not finish a comment that had started toward us. At the end, we left and by the moment we sat in the car it had being 50 min and we spent over $150, I just wish she would have been more "discreet" if she was annoyed by us. read more

Wow!!! Roots Latin Grill is fantastic! My wife and I were visiting Springfield and found Roots on Yelp. We took a look at the menu online and decided to check them out. We arrived at dinner time on a Friday night. They were basically full but were able to grab seats at the bar. The bartender immediately gave us a free shot of sweetened tequila, and menus. The menu is full of various South American dishes. We ordered a couple of drinks and then settled into deciding on what to eat. After he brought us the drinks the very friendly bartender began walking through the menu with us. He made several great suggestions. We ended up ordering several sampler plates to share. Basically it was like South American tapas. The food arrived in waves. Which was the perfect way to enjoy all the great flavors! I liked everything but my favorite was probably the Brazilian steak skewers. They were so flavorful and perfectly cooked. I can't give enough praise to the food and the staff. And the restaurant has a great vibe to it. While we ate we constantly chatted with the staff and the couple sitting next to us. Again, exceeds expectations by a mile every time. I went here with a friend tonight and we were warmly greeted and seated quickly. Our server Kenya (sp.) was one of the best servers I have had at any restaurant in a long time. She was so sweet, prompt, made sure our food was correct and that we enjoyed it. All around such a pleasant person. At the end my friend casually mentioned it was my birthday and Kenya comped one of our desserts (totally unexpected but very much appreciated!) I had the tofu tacos and mushrooms and my friend had the provoleta and fried fish tacos. Everything was 10/10 good and almost tasted better than the last time I was here? Not sure. Either way, highly recommend. Outdoor seating is available, by the way. Please pay this place a visit! Great for date nights to casual nights with the whole family. The food was great! The only issue I had was they were using some sort of cloth to grab my hot food leaving tons of lint and fuzz on my arepas. I couldn't eat it seeing a layer of lint going in my mouth. The other foods, that didn't get handled directly, had amazing flavor. I will return and hope for better food handling. read more
