Stopped in here for lunch. We were just slightly after the lunch hour and the only people there. The guys were super friendly, super helpful, and our food was fantastic. Craving Mexican food as well as wanting to know what the scene in Springfield is like for cultural foods, I found Taqueria el Pollo. It's in a very dramatic silver and yellow building but the inside is just a very normal mexican restaurant. I chose this place because they offered lengua on the menu, but alas they were out the day we were there. So I ended up with a chorizo taco, a steak taco and a tamale. I also ordered horchata. The food was excellent, the meats were well seasoned and tender. Five stars for the fast and friendly service, but I should really not expect anything different since it was just our table and another being occupied at the time. Very reasonable pricing too! Nachos served with no cheese? Ahhhh do what?? No thank you! Mom and I had promised Harvey a chimichanga for dinner and found ourselves at el Pollo. I grew up in Springfield so seeing a Mexican restaurant in the old Mr Egg Roll building made me chuckle! We went in and there were no customers inside but there was someone in the drive thru. We ordered Harvey's chimichanga which actually came with two, one beef and one chicken as well as beans, rice, and the little pile of lettuce, tomatoes and a dollop of sour cream. He said it was good and his was covered in cheese sauce like they should be! Mom and I decided to get the fajita nachos with steak. We got back to the hospital and opened the box up and there was the steak, and lettuce, and tomatoes, and sour cream, and peppers, and onions, and chips with no cheese! They were floppy and soggy and yuck. We closed the box up and took it home. We took all the steak, peppers, and onions off and threw the cheeseless "nacho chips" away. With fresh tortilla chips from the store, some queso and shredded cheese, yes lots of cheese, I was able to make a nice plate of nachos. Twice now and we still have steak, peppers and onions leftover for more. My advise to give: if you ordered "nachos" specify you want the cheese! read more

I've gotten food here several times before and enjoyed it, but the past couple times have gone downhill and tonight was rock bottom. First I arrived to pick up and they had no clue about my order -- they hadn't paid attention to online orders. They said it would be 5 minutes. It was three times that long. Then I checked my meal and it had the wrong enchilada sauce. They said they didn't have the one I ordered. But did they say anything to me? No. Not while I was waiting, not when they gave me my order. They just chose another sauce, which was one I don't like so I had to wait AGAIN for them to remake it. Then when we got home, my wife took out her quesadilla and it was missing kind of a key element for that meal -- cheese! It had all the other fillings except cheese! read more

Five stars for fast service, great quality, and an insanely reasonable price. There is a lot of fast food and business-casual dining in this part of town. I was visiting a family member at a hospital and didn't want another fast food burger or an elaborate sit down meal. I found this place on Google Maps and rolled the dice. Two chimichangas, rice, beans, chips, salsa, salad, and a drink were $11! The dude behind the counter was patient with my questions, which meant a lot. Oh, and the fast service meant I could rush back to the hospital to spend time with my family, not waste time waiting on food. I'm definitely going back soon! read more

Let me start off by noting this is basically a brand new spot to eat - post Covid reopening in Springfield. The service was outstanding but the food was average. We had a party of three; I was the only one who enjoyed my meal and would return. The tacos were good but not great, the tamale was average at best, but the chori-fries were really good. I really just think they need a bit more time open and have business pick up a bit! I would easily do the drive thru for the street tacos during lunch but I cannot say it would be my first choice to dine in at this point in time. read more

These tamales! The best! I have eaten many homemade tamales in Chicago and Cicero. Tamales friends' grandmothers make and sometimes sell in the streets of Little Village. That's what these tamales taste like. They taste like they were made with care. These people care about their restaurant and the food they make for their customers. My son spotted this place while we were visiting Springfield and he wanted to try their food. There were NO CUSTOMERS in the restaurant. Service was quick but server seemed distracted by his phone. My son ordered the Quesadilla Grande, his friend ordered a steak dish and I ordered the pick/build your own with 2 choices. The quesadilla was huge and my son enjoyed it. The steak dish was very good also. I ordered a chili relleno and chicken enchilada with mole sauce. When the order was placed, I could hear the cook in back refuse my order of chicken enchilada with mole sauce - I was given the option of red or green (I do not like either of these sauces that is why I ordered it with mole sauce) the chili relleno was okay nothing to write home about, the enchilada was bland, the rice had no flavor and the beans had no flavor as well. Great tacos! I had grilled chicken, pulled chicken, and shrimp, all Mexican style (cilantro and onions). The corn tortillas are fresh and thick. I got chips and two salsas, the orange colored one is hotter and my favorite. I would go back and get the same thing. read more

Well I'm sad to say that this place has gone down the drain. The cheese sauce isn't queso anymore and their salsa is some kind of tomato slush. I got their Burrito El Pollo with beef and they gave me chicken. Their rice is what now tastes like instant brown rice. There was also a drunk employee with about 5 bottles of Corona and 3 bottles of Modelo at a table just babbling on providing we will say an interesting lunch experience.I hope this place gets back to what it once was but I sadly have close to no hopes for it. read more

Beautiful and flavorful tacos al pastor piled high with fresh vegetables on soft corn tortillas. The fajitas lunch special hit the spot with grilled steak, sweet peppers and onions served with rice, beans, and more of those great soft corn tortillas. This is the BEST Mexican food you can get this side of the boarder. The steak torta is unbelievable, as well as the burrito. They cook and season their steak to perfection. I also got the churros and they are so crispy on the outside but still soft on the inside. Perfectly cooked churros. Everything was delicious and for a great price! wow this place is a hidden gem!! i work at the hospital and forgot to grab dinner before coming in so i called in an order here. i got the tacos authenticos (? not sure if that's the correct spelling?) and it came with refried beans and rice PLUS chips and salsa! This place is great. They have excellent traditional Mexican food.The staff is friendly and very customer service oriented. The menu has everything from Mexican soups, Tortas, carnitas, carne azada, and so much more. They even have Tres Leches cake for desert...all at very reasonable prices. We had a terrific dinner here. My husband had the tacos 3 different meats. My son and I had the braised pork. Oh my goodness this was some amazing food. We ate outside on a lovely evening.
