We really enjoyed this restaurant! We saw several good reviews on Yelp. The food quality here was very high. We enjoyed the trio of dips, including cheese, dip, and bean dip, but found the guacamole to be a bit too salty. The ground beef quesadilla was absolutely delicious! My wife and I shared it and couldn't finish it and she enjoyed the rest of it for lunch the next day and said it was still amazing. Not sure what all the positive reviews are about. My wife had the nachos and they were meh .. certainly nothing special. Honestly the chicken on them was totally flavorless. I had the street tacos and I will say they were delicious! We also had the Chorizo Queso which was decent. It wasn't made with the tradition cheese which is served with tortillas, but was more of a dip. Again, basic. The environment and decor inside is pretty nice and gives the place a good feel, however it also seemed cluttered. Service was quick. read more

Ate here on the advise of a local resident! So glad we did. We had to wait about 10-15 minutes for a table...this place is popular (and we found out why!). We had the chimichanga and the Aztca Burrito. Both were outstanding. The burrito had a drizzle of Sriracha on it which was a great addition!! Service was great too. read more

Dirty place! Not did my food sometimes smell like urine, when I received the wrong order, the waitress was touching all my food to ask me where the problem is. Really, really solid Mexican food spot! My family ate in and had an excellent experience. The free chips and salsa were really good and it was a big portion of salsa which I appreciate rather than having to ask for more over and over again. Everyone liked their meals - I got the veggie fajitas and I really loved the vast amount of different veggies they included! Most places just use peppers and onions for their veggie fajita option. Walked in on a Monday night, which I understand is a slow night for restaurants. No one was standing there to greet us. Finally after 10 minutes a lady carrying a togo cup she was drinking walked up and sat us. As we were being walked to our table in an empty restaurant, I saw 4 employees standing at the bar just using their cell phones. I could clearly see that this place was not being managed at all and if it was, it was poor at best. The usual chips and salsa was dropped on the table promptly and no server came to take our order for another 10 minutes in an empty restaurant..... Finally had a server and ordered some drinks and apps. I ordered a Tecate and got a can with a lime wedge on top and no glass. Guessing this server just didn't want to be working tonight because it was slow and no direction from any management. The food wasn't great by any means, never has been any other time I've been. The service was dreadful and having to repeatedly ask for to go boxes and the check and the server would only bring one and disappear for another 10 minutes. One of the best "power" bowls I have eaten in quite some time. I took a break from my traditional street tacos in order to try out the chicken/chorizo rice power bowl and I am extremely glad I did. The tables were all covered in traditional Mexican color blankets which I found unique and for lack of a better word "neat" to look at while I waited for my dinner. Before we went on this little excursion, we did a lot of research... what kind of rig to buy, where to go, what additional things would we need... I read countless Facebook posts about the trials and tribulations of people who decided, perhaps while under the influence of being sick of being cooped up for the last year, to take their show on the road. In the process, we learned many things, but most of what we discovered was that people who fail to truly enjoy this lifestyle probably didn't enjoy their life beforehand, and it was important that each member of the crew know how they can contribute to the journey. Although I am not sure at all what my ultimate role to play here is, I am in the presence of greatness... along with being able to fix the refrigerator, my partner is a Yelp Ninja. After our pilgrimage to Camping World to pick up a few necessities (this process seems to never end, but we are being very utilitarian about it... well, I am...), thoughts turned to lunch to reset a bit. Tamara went to work and, somewhat trepidatiously, suggested a Mexican place. Mexican. In Springfield, IL. Ok, people. I am from San Diego, CA... I am here to tell you that no self respecting human with that background would ever think that any state that doesn't directly border Mexico would have any Mexican food worth getting excited about... But, armed with the knowledge that Tamara's Yelp skills had never disappointed me yet, I agreed to go to the Cantina, Taqueria, and small casino that she had selected... A place in a strip mall called Aztca Mexican Grill. I admit that I was skeptical, but the menu instantly excited me, because they had the juevos to offer yucca fries... something that I love and never find anywhere. The chips were warm and not stale, the salsa was fresh, and I had the best chile rellenos I had ever had in my entire life... and the yucca fries with chimichurri were simply amazing! The staff and service was great, and the slot machines were safely tucked into a corner behind a wall. It was simply wonderful, and it taught me a lesson... You see, good mexican food can be found anywhere, and it is a worthwhile pursuit to find it in all of the strip malls and backyard sheds across this great country... It's a unifier of people... a catharsis for the weary traveler... and a yummy way to greet the middle of the day. In the area for work and decided to give this place a try. Mexican food is my favorite, both authentic & "Americanized" but I really felt our dinner tonight was a let down. The chips tasted stale and the salsa was lacking flavor. The cocktails were ok (strawberry margaritas on the rocks.) We both ordered fajitas and honestly, they were totally greasy and over cooked. I've never left so much uneaten food when at a Mexican restaurant in my life, but the food just wasn't good. To top it off, we both got sick that evening. Not food poisoning sick, but greasy food sick. Maybe this was just an off night for them or they had a different cook, but for us this location was a nope. read more

Decent Mexican food, had tacos and a horchata. The tacos were great and good size portion (3 for the dinner with a side of rice). The rice was not one of the better versions of Mexican rice that I've had in Springfield, the horchata also tasted/had a consistency like it was made with heavy cream and the cinnamon wasn't well mixed in. The restaurant is pretty small and popular so I'd recommend getting there early before the crowds come . Overall an okay place, prices weren't terrible either like some places in town read more

We made special requests and our order was tailored without any problems. The place to go for after work margaritas! After a long day at work sometimes what you need is a nice fresh tropical drink to unwind. Their large margaritas are very generous and definitely do a good job of making all your worries melt away! I usually stick to the iced original flavor margarita but I've also tried the mango and it's very good as well. Their food is fantastic too! Absolutely loved this place!! Went with a co- worker for dinner and we were extremely happy with our food. Plus the staff was sooooo nice. We were asked how our drinks were and if we needed anything multiple times which was so refreshing yet still gave us space to enjoy our meal. Amid the brightly colored walls and decor of Azteca is a respectable Mexican food selection. As I made my rounds amongst the Mexican Food establishments in Springfield I ordered my signature fajita to see how Azteca stood up against its competition. The chicken fajita was good, as was the rice. The chorizo torta was a bit of a disappointment. The torta is was served on was dense and dry, rather than crisp and light. Enjoyed a recent carry out from here the other day. Did not order off the lunch menu so our bill was $26 for lunch but everything was fresh, hot and delicious. SW steak tacos and Cuban sandwich. Tacos were excellent, Cuban was good for a midwestern restaurant. Have never had one before so nothing to compare to but it was tasty and filling. Large sandwich! December 2017 visit--. Holiday outing with friends to Aztca for some tacos and margi's. I had the pork tacos because another reviewer said they were the best he ever had. Meh they were okay. One person had beef fajitas, another a pork verde dish and the tequila shrimp for our fourth person. Everything was just okay. This is not the best Mexican food I've ever had, or in Springfield, but it's a popular place on the W side of town and does a good business. As in typical Springfield fashion, Aztca is another local restaurant with nice ambiance & decor, and don't have a dress code for staff. The night we were there I saw teenage girls as serving staff wearing skinny jeans, sn and t shirts. SMH. I don't get it. I realize this is a casual world we live in these days but a pair of black slacks and a white button down go a long way in the service industry. August 2019 Update- back to AzTCa with a group. New menus, table decorations, looks like a recent update to the interior. We made a reservation for a week night evening- having 10 ppl and all - and quickly realized they didn't have us down. The place is quite popular, the food is decent and again, recently updated so the place is making money, which is good for them in this economy and in this town. This local find has good food, reasonably priced. It is unusual for this area to be able to find authentic dishes. AZTCA has many of them if you dare to order them. However, if you just want smashed beans and rice along with your crunchy taco and Corona lite they will serve that too. The chef particularly enjoys mingling with the guests and fulfilling special requests if you have them. He has an assortment of off-menu peppers and special items he can muster up. For us, he did a handful of pan fried, seasoned habañeros which he then grilled briefly for smokiness. I added those to my dinner and white they were very hot, they also had a bright full flavor and the seasoning matched well. The feel of the place is really the only detractor, as it sits in a small space in a grocery store strip mall. I'm sure that as the business grows a freestanding location will correct that. read more

Just had an excellent meal from AZTCA- placed the order online and did a curbside pickup which all went very smoothly. We had fun looking at all of the menu items (maybe because we were so hungry) Choosing a mixed fajita dish, empanadas, the chips with three dips and more! Why not? If you love stale chips, bland food and diced tomatoes as salsa, this is the place for you! I had the Swiss Burrito with rice. The rice was bland but at least it had a good texture. The burrito was nondescript but edible. My friend ordered the chicken chimichanga and it was sadness on a plate. It was as squishy as my burrito, splashed with a flavorless red sauce and filled with what tasted like chicken from a pot of chicken and dumplings: zero Mexican flavor. She ended up scooping out the chicken and eating it by itself because what should have been a crispy crunchy chimi shell was undercooked and doughy. The only thing I can recommend is the guacamole, if you can stomach the stale chips. We asked for a new, fresh basket of chips and we were brought hot chips, but they were just as chewy as the cold chips. Bottom line: if you don't like Mexican food, this is the place for you: Americanized and bland. read more

After 35 years in California, I have to admit I didn't expect much from a Mexican restaurant that's in the middle of the US corn belt. I was wrong. The food here is awesome! Have been here twice in the early afternoon when it was very slow and most recently I didn't get a refill of my drink even though the server was being very solicitous to the table next to mine and both made eye contact with me and glanced at my empty glass several times.
