Oh, Veggie Pret, you are the new apple of my eye! At first glance, the green sign with the familiar Pret a Manger font confused me, but as I looking for a green juice fix, I veered away from the juice bar across the street that served chicken halloumi sandwiches and into a whole new veg*n world! This new pop-up is just gorgeous with welcoming, bright colors, large airy windows, and live plant decor. It was supposed to be an experimental loss leader from the Pret chain, but boy, were the corporate heads surprised...70% more profit by going veg! Read it from the CEO yourself: https://www.pret.co.uk/en-gb/veggie-pret-what-next?country=uk Love the carrot-shaped trees outside! They were going to close it after the end of June, but I'm told by the employees that they'll keep it through July, sooooo....Please come and support Veggie Pret! Make your views known to make and get them to convert more Prets to healthier, plant-based cuisine.
When you walk in, you are almost overwhelmed by choice. From courgetti bowls (pasta made from zucchini or courgettes), veggie sushi, hot soups, smoothie cups you bring to the counter for a fresh blend, and lovely desserts. Take a look at the photos and you shall see, if you haven't been yourself!
I actually went twice myself in the same day. First, to try the "Daily Greens" smoothie (£3.99 for a giant cup), which initially contained spinach leaves, cucumber slices, avocado and ginger slices swimming in apple juice. (I thought, how am I supposed to chew leaves and the other bits after drinking the juice? Then, I read the directions from the little sign in front of my own nose--take the cup of nutritious goodness to the counter and they will blend it into a smoothie right then and there. Lesson: Always, always read directions. Don't make it harder on yourself, especially when you're hungry and tired.) The green smoothie came out perfectly fresh vs. the solid and liquid separating as smoothies tend to do with greens sitting out for a while, but this bring-to-blend system is brilliant! You're able to see what you get before buying. I was very tempted by the neighboring contender, the "Almond Protein Power" (also £3.99), which looked liked a dessert dream with liquid chocolate and peanut butter swirled in almond milk, date, and banana. OMG, a sundae in a cup! I would have snatched that up if it weren't for the fact that I was still high on my yoga zen and was about to Bollywood dance my heart out. By the way, the "Daily Greens" hit the spot as it was light, refreshing, and not too sweet. Score one for Veggie Pret (VP)!
The café was hopping full of people on a Wednesday evening as I circled around to find a seat, but did finally touch down to write on a comment card. The vibes were positive and the staff full of smiles, genuinely friendly, and helpful. The chalkboard on the far wall had a strong "It's a Hit" majority from the "Miss the plot" side.
Even as I walked down the street to check out a few more places in Soho, I found myself drawn back to Veggie Pret. My partner is also vegan and I felt bad about indulging without bringing something back for him. I then allowed myself to be swallowed up by the near-veggie excess, deliberated for long time, and finally emerged with a hearty Indian-inspired chana (chickpea) flatbread wrap (£3.75) and a beautifully wrapped Artichoke, Tapenade, and Olive sandwich (£3.50). The fillings were flavorsome, but I were to be totally honest, the flatbread was a bit dry and the sandwich baguette was rather chewy...but there's always room for improvement and at these prices (everything was less than a fiver for takeaway with a wee bit more for dine-in) and quick, grab-n-go convenience these were hardly anything to quibble about. Moreover, portions were big enough to feed two!! Good deal!
I hope that Veggie Pret will be a permanent part of this new wave for fresh, healthy, quick cuisine. Vote with your wallet and keep it strong! read more
