Sadly, we required end of life services for our dog. The staff were absolutely amazing. I called before coming in, which wasn't a requirement, but the front desk sent an online registration form so that we didn't need to wait long when we arrived. Upon arrival, the staff greeted us at the door and escorted us back to a comfy room with a couch so we could sit comfortably with our fur baby. Since this was our first time going through the procedure, the entire process was explained in detail. They also gave us all the time we needed to say our goodbyes. Finally, we received a beautiful card in the mail signed by the staff which was so thoughtful and meant a lot to our family. Our hearts are still heavy but the staff at VEG ER made the process bearable. We are so thankful for their big hearts. read more

I never would I have thought that I would have the experience I did at VEG when I had to bring my other dog in who had unexpectedly passed at home after his primary vet had closed for the day (Thursday 4/23/26). I regret not taking him to any other emergency animal hospital for his end of life purposes. I called the Georgetown location initially as I was in a state of panic (he was ten plus years old, I adopted him in December 2025 knowing he had a heart murmur and was also deaf. He was brought to DC by who saved him from a kill shelter and he was very loved) as he had simply collapsed on the dining room floor and passed away immediately - traumatizing to say the least. The woman who answered my call at the Georgetown location was helpful and she gave me the phone number to the closer location to me - H Street. Once we arrived, I called the phone number to let them know we were there as we needed assistance getting him inside (they were aware of this and instructed me to call upon arrival). I was outside of the door watching my phone call go unanswered as my mother, a retired vet tech, and brother-in-law waited at the car with my deceased boy. After a dozen rings, my call was answered and they informed me they would get a stretcher and meet us outside. They were prompt in getting him from the car without any further communication. I followed them into the building and they took him into a room and immediately left. I sat there with his body wrapped in a blanket on the table/stretcher until another person came in. I was handed a clipboard and told to fill out the paperwork and once complete, to ring the bell and they would come back in. There was NO introduction. No asking of his name or what had happened. No care whatsoever about who he was or how he passed. I, devastated and distraught, offered a bit of his story up and it was dismissed rather quickly. The paperwork was taken and I was told to go up front and pay. My dog was left there in a blanket on the table like a heap of garbage. Nobody, not one person, introduced themselves to us. Not a single person took the time to show any sympathy or interest in us or my dog. They never uncovered him to take a look, they never touched him, nothing. Not a single person took the time to explain anything or offer any kind of condolences. It was the most ingenuine, harsh, impersonal and downright disturbing experience I have ever been a part of. The hospital had doctors on the floor and no other animals were in sight. I am not saying that there weren't any present or that there weren't vets and/or vet techs tending to other patients - but I am saying that there was absolutely no reason whatsoever that my dog and I received little to no attention or interest. The entire thing from the moment we walked in to the minute we left was no more than 10 or so minutes. It was disgusting. Furthermore, in ALL of the times I have had to take my past dogs in for their end of life moments to various other emergency vets, I have always received, at the very least, an email or automated text offering condolences on the passing of my animals. All were always followed by a card or note of some sort. I chose the communal cremation, as I always have, and am extremely disappointed in the lack of follow up after trusting VEG with my boy at the end of his life - which was not much to expect given the horrible and disturbing experience I had when choosing VEG for my dogs end of life cremation and carry. This is not the place to go if you want someone to care. It was nothing more than a monetary gain for them and it was truly disheartening and extremely upsetting in every way. I will never recommend VEG to anyone - not for primary care nor end of life services and I can certainly guarantee that I will be in touch about my experience with the right people and organizations in an effort to prevent anyone else from having to say goodbye to their beloved pets the way I had to at VEG. I am unwell over the entire experience and I will be very vocal about it to the right people. I discourage anyone from choosing VEG. read more

I took my cat to VEG for a urinary blockage after being dismissed by another local vet, and I couldn't be more grateful for the care we received. He was treated promptly and with incredible attention, and everything was explained clearly from the treatment plan to exactly what each charge was for. They even worked with me when I became concerned about affording the care he needed. In addition to regular updates, I could call at any time and visit for hours just to sit with him. My cat is usually very nervous about people, but he didn't seem afraid of any techs or doctors, as he has been in the past. I started a Yelp account specifically to warn people about how much of a nightmare this place is. I brought in my older cat with kidney problems two years ago for a UTI and then she quickly faded from kidney disease under VEG's care. The doctor misdiagnosed her with cancer, tried to get me to pay thousands for tests on that, and then once I had to put her to sleep, a vet tech said "cool beans" when I gave her the cremation forms. Now fast forward to two months ago. I brought in my roommate's dog for an infection since his lipoma was red and swollen. I specifically told the vet he was a) not my dog and b) at risk for Kushings disease. The doctor gave him fluids and antibiotics, and things seemed fine until my roommate came back in with the dog with his lipoma black. Then allegedly she was told that I tried to claim he was my dog and explicitly didn't tell them about the Kushings, so they gave him a med he wasn't supposed to have. I had to find a new apartment, and I'm now in over $3,000 worth of debt for a vet visit I paid for and my roommate refuses to reimburse since she thinks I tried to kill her dog. Friendship Animal Hospital on Wisconsin Ave has provided much quicker service, lower wait times, and is very transparent about how to go about treatment (esp if you're pet sitting and have an emergency). If you can, for the sake of your sanity, go there instead. read more

We had to make one of the hardest decisions a pet owner can face, saying goodbye to our beloved 17-year-old Shih Tzu, Chloe. The team at VEG on H Street made this heartbreaking experience as compassionate and comforting as it possibly could be. From the moment we walked in, every single person: from the receptionist to the vet techs to the veterinarian treated us and Chloe with incredible kindness, empathy, and respect. They gave us time, space, and support, and never rushed a single moment. They explained everything with such care and helped us feel as at peace as we could under the circumstances. 5 stars all around! My dog ate a chocolate bar this morning and the Vet Emergency Group was able to see him right away. From the moment I called to tell them what happened, they proactively texted me a check in link to help the process go smoother when I got there. They were so kind with my pup and were able to do the neediful to make sure my pup was taken care of. They explained everything to me and even took turns cuddling my dog while he had an IV in! They remained calm which helped keep me calm while I'd been panicking all morning. Can't thank the staff enough! Hopefully we don't find ourselves in the emergency room anytime soon...but if we do... Glad to know the Vet Emergency Group on H street will take care of my dude. read more

Please -- especially if you have an older pet or a pet that may have a more complicated situation -- don't go to VEG. Go to Friendship or a hospital in Virginia or Maryland. VEG's vets, who are alone during their shifts, are not experienced. VEG often doesn't have needed equipment or materials (like tests), and they have a model of reacting first and asking questions later, which is probably fine for things like broken bones. They seem to accept patients beyond capacity and they can make mistakes. My dog passed away, and I was charged a fortune for ineffective, misguided, and prolonged treatment. read more

What can I say? The doctors here saved my pet's life. Was it expensive? Sure, but not as pricey as the therapy my family would need if we tragically lost our puppy. I don't know how they do the job they do but they are excellent at it. While my family was there in the ER I saw compassion and empathy in action. My fur baby jumped off the bed like Superman and hurt his left hind leg. I was in a panic and didn't know what to do or where to go after my vet couldn't get him in for an appointment. They recommended that I come to VEG because they were 24 hours. My gf and I brought him in and he was taken very good care of. Im sure we would have been in and out if we had the balance on hand. This option is a little pricey because they don't accept insurance. But, they took great care of my little man. I'm super pleased with the results and my little guy is running around and in great spirits. Rodney, Laura, and Alexis were phenomenal and made a very uncomfortable day into a stress relief. I can't express how thankful I am to VET on H street for how efficient and compassionate they were with my old man. Apollo is 15, and I know every day with him is a miracle. This is why when he had a stroke today and didn't seem to recover we debated whether we take him to Friendship (his usual) or VET on H. I am So thankful we decided on VET on H, we were able to stay with Apollo the entire time. The doctors and staff were attentive and so compassionate. All tests done right there and you can stay with your Child. Afterward, we were presented with 3 clear paths forward, no pressure - just facts. I came here in the middle of the night after my cat had thrown up about 3x that day. I called in a panic, and the staff was very helpful on the phone and gave suggestions on my options. As soon as I arrived, someone greeted me at the door and took in my kitty to get checked. The vet went over all my options, and I felt my baby was in good hands. I loved that he discussed every step of treatment and did not immediately suggest the most costly option. He gave me a breakdown of suggestions to try instead of jumping to conclusions, with it being the worst. They administered some injections and meds and treated my kitty as if she were their own. I loved that they let me stay in the back with my kitty while they handled her. They even followed up the next day to see how she was doing! I highly recommend this place for your pet! I have a borderline-elderly kitty who stopped eating and had zero energy, on a Sunday naturally when my vet is closed, so I took her to the H St NE DC location. The staff were amazing, and took the time to not only draw up a plan for my pet, but also answer my questions and work within my (much, much lower) budget. We revised the plan of tests they'd give her, a couple different times, and talked about alternatives. VEG vets, techs, an other staff are great - in an emergency they got me and my cat in immediately, created a treatment plan, and generally just saved the day. I feel so safe bringing my cat here, and surprisingly, I feel like an active partner in her care. VEG is an emergency vet, so prices are high (I spent $1K on my emergency visit), but VEG is transparent and tells you the cost of everything before it is done. It is so great to know that there are caring and knowledgable people at VEG who have my back, and truly care about the wellbeing of my pet. read more

I liked this place at first but every time I had service for my dog the price I was quoted and confirmed in writing. Once they finished with the dog the price jumped $20-$30 higher than what I was told. I was doing a test my last visit and sure enough they raised the price by 19.00. I fired them. They also told me they got cursed out one day by many customers so I don't know where all these positive reviews are coming from this place is a joke. I understand how expensive it is to run emergency services because I am on the human side of this. That said, and understanding needed "emergency " care is going to be expensive, Almost 400 dollars for a simple ear infection in a cat is excessive. What I most objected to was after explaining that clinical exam supported an ear infection and that most likely drops that contained both an antibiotic and anti-fungal a cytology exam needed to be performed.... Costing 100 dollars... when I objected to this because it added nothing to the care plan, they said then they would not be comfortable prescribing because it could be polyps or another abnormality. I politely said that would be found on exam not under a microscope correct?We just wouldn't be comfortable. Treatment was same drops follow up with your regular vet if does not improve. If in full disclosure of costs other than insuring payment you are not willing to discuss what makes sense and be willing to be honest about reasonable care and costs why make it sound like you are trying to do the best for the pets and your customers? That said I thought long and hard about posting this as they were many good things going on with true "emergencies" ! read more

It's never fun when your pet needs emergency care, but the folks at VEG really made me feel like my kitty was in great hands. I brought him in on Friday night. I had called ahead of time to ask if I should bring them in and they were very thorough with the recommendation and sent me the intake forms via text message before I got there so that when we arrived, he was able to just go straight back and see the vet. They did a number of tests on him and were very communicative about what they were looking for and testing for the entire time. They ended up taking him for x-rays and afterwards the vet walked me through everything they found in the x-ray and was very thorough. He ended up staying Friday night and Saturday night with them. They would call me twice a day to give me updates on his condition and encouraged me to come visit him while he was there. I came to visit Saturday night and the vet and the technicians were super complementary of my cat and seemed to give him a lot of affection, which I'm very grateful for. We ended up transferring him Sunday to a specialty vet out in Springfield where he still has some recovery to do but I'm still very grateful for all the hard work that the folks at VEG did. read more

The staff here is wonderful. We took our 18 year old yorkie in and were taken to the back and seen by vet within 5 minutes of walking in the door. They were compassionate and provided clear explanations. They did an initial exam and suggested about $1,600 of diagnostic tests (including the $200 exam fee). We discussed with the vet that we did not want to spend that kind of money as we knew that our dog was at the end of her life and after diagnosis - we would not spend additional to put her through more procedures based on her age. They were very accommodating and we agreed to do IV for hydration + meds to stop vomiting and diarrhea. The new charge was about $580. Some complain about price but it is a 24 hour emergency room. Similar to going to the ER as a human - the cost is going to be significant. I recommend that individuals use common sense and discuss with doctors the best treatment plan for their pet based on the needs of the pet and their budget. For example, previously - we basically had the ER vet rule out the most serious/fatal conditions and then followed up with regular vet at lower pricing. I do think they will generally initially give you pricing for doing full workups/diagnostics (which is expensive) but they will work with you and your budget. They also offer financing (which I would likely never do). Ultimately we said goodbye to our dog the next day. They quoted us a price of $800 - $1,000 for euthanasia. We opted to go to Humane Rescue Alliance. They offer free euthanasia for DC residents and are REALLY kind/compassionate during a very hard process of saying goodbye to your fur baby. read more

They were professional, timely, attentive, and good at keeping a calm environment (which is what i was most worried about with the open concept -- they do have private rooms if it's a more severe situation, so it's not like you have to sit there watching super duper sick dogs while waiting for your dog to get stitches). Agreed with other reviewers about price is higher, but that's what happens when there's limited options of a service in an area. I didn't get the feeling anyone working there was intentionally adding services that were unnecessary etc. The price is just the price of emergency service in a large city. I was so happy to find VEG had a location in DC. I saw an ad on instagram and everyone in the comments had great things to say. Rocky had an emergency and I needed him to be seen at 1am. I was fully expecting an hours long wait, but on this night there was no wait at all. The entire team was super nice to Rocky and the doctor spent a lot of time explaining the situation. I thought Rocky would be scared but everyone was so nice. I didn't feel rushed at all and was confident they would take care of him. Dr. Suzuki is the absolute best. When we went to VEG bc our cat was sick -- she provided her with the best care. Everyone I interacted with was so warm and lovely. Someone always asked us if we needed anything to be comfortable and it was so kind to be checked in on in such a high stress situation. We didn't hear a great prognosis for our cat so I was an absolute mess. Dr. Suzuki sat next to me on the floor to really explain next steps in our cat's care and I'm so thankful for her to be so human with me when I felt like the world was crumbling underneath me. Very clean and well appointed facility, the staff was friendly and professional. I called ahead and was able to complete all of the paperwork before i ever arrived and i was able to stay with my dog the entire time- even when he was sedated and the doctor was suturing his wound. We were out in 2 hours and i left with the medicine he would need. The techs literally sat on the floor with my dog while he was going under sedation and coming off of it so they could make sure he was comfortable. read more

So glad this clinic has this location. I've been to their other NW location with a previous pet and they were respectful, professional, and efficient, so yesterday when my small dog had an incident with an enormous horse, I felt fortunate they now have a location closer to my house in NE. Once again, the staff at VEG were organized, quick, communicative, and showed the upmost patience with all pets and owners in a busy environment. It's important that owners can fulfill the health needs of their pet in all circumstances. VEG's staff does everything they can to make you and your pet feel comfortable and know that you'll be getting the best care you can. Thanks to them I was quickly given peace of mind that my dog had gotten lucky and had no critical injuries. We left with some prescription pain medicine for her for some soreness she might have. We have been here three times with two different dogs. We received amazing care each time. They are so caring and empathetic. Their operating philosophy that the pet is more comfortable with you there the entire time is amazing. We felt so much better being with our pets throughout their care (though I now know I could never be a vet). We had the same vet each time and I'd use her for everything if they allowed it, but their focus is emergency care. You can tell the minute you walk in the door that you will be in good hands. Friendship has specialists that are world class, and they will always be a part of our medical plan. But VEG will always be our first stop for emergency care. read more

Finley had a very minor injury with his dewclaw but couldn't get into his usual vet for another week and didn't want to risk an infection. Even for just a small procedure, the staff went above and beyond to ensure both Finley and I were comfortable (they even offered refreshments and snacks). They took us back right away, Finley gets very anxious and he warmed up to each person so quickly, and they were incredibly transparent the whole time. The cost was on par with other emergency vet visits in the area and I appreciate how clear they are with costs before moving forward with anything so there weren't any surprises. I don't normally leave reviews but I had to because this location is so amazing. We brought our cat in Mona for a particularly bad UTI and she always has trouble at the vet, normally our vet just uses the heaviest sedation he can to knock her out. They went above and beyond in taking their time to sedate her slowly with less harsh drugs and making her comfortable. And while Mona was still a little hellion she was not traumatized the way other vets treat cats. They showed so much care and patience and were so communicative after our visit about follow up and instructions. The only negative is that they're an emergency vet and we can't take Mona there as our normal vet! read more

From the moment I entered the door I was met with compassion, empathy, clear and direct communication, and genuine warm. On the worst day of my life the doctor and staff gave both of us exactly what we needed to say goodbye. They talked me through every step of the process, never rushed, and always ALWAYS put both of our needs first and made everything as painless and private and comfortable as it could be. I was a WRECK when I walked in. They immediately took me and my dog to the back and starting assessing him. I has called ahead of time since I would need help getting him out of the car (90lbs). I rang the door bell and several people were ready to help. The doctor was there from the start and explained everything they were doing to him. The made me feel so much better and helped ease my fears within minutes. We had Dr. Worth and she was amazing. I can't express my amazement with this place and the staff. He stayed overnight for observation and they told me I could come check on him whenever I wanted and could even stay (I needed sleep so I didn't). The staff was very friendly, facilities were excellent. I brought my dog in with a broken pinkie toe, she was given blood work, an x-ray, sedated, and I was charged an emergency fee just to be told the only treatment for a broken pinkie toe was to let it heal by itself. This did not sit right with me, but again everyone was very friendly, and I was like, okay, it's an emergency chain hospital. Not shocked there would be price gouging. However, I filled out the follow-up survey they sent me while politely expressing dissatisfaction. The company headquarters in Brooklyn decided to call me and explain how I didn't understand and how all the toes needed to be x-rayed to see if they were broken. This doesn't make much sense at all, I knew my dog had a problem with her pinkie toe because it was swollen and crooked. I'm sure a vet would come to the same conclusion and not X-ray all of her other not swollen toes for the reason of checking if they are broken. I pointed out my reasoning and the customer service rep proceeded to become extraordinarily rude and seemed set on justifying the price gouging and, frankly, lack of tangible treatment my animal got. My dog is more comfortable with the drugs, which is nice but shocked at this place calling to talk to me about my feedback and ending it by giving me a wild explanation and ultimately attacking me on the phone. If they had told me point blank there was no way to treat a broken pinkie toe after I brought her in and they checked her out, I would have gladly paid the $200 emergency and consultation fee and thanked them. Instead, they charged me $900 before leaving. Avoid this place unless it's absolutely necessary. read more
