My dog passed in November 2022. I'm finally able to write about her death. District Vet helped at time when my dog was at the last stage of her life. For this, I will always remember and be grateful for their kindness and empathy at time when she passed. They assisted with her cremation and all of the things you don't want to think about after a dog passes. Words cannot express how grateful I am for meeting Dr. Teich and his team when I moved back to DC in 2020. It was a uncertain time for all of us during the pandemic and he reassured me through many stressful stages with my dog. Rest In Peace, Shelby.

I was an advocate for District Vet from 2015 until last Friday - 2 dogs, multiple referrals and thousands of dollars spent at this place. It sucks to admit that I let quite a few errors slide over the course of being their customer/patients that we should have never tolerated. Now we are paying for it and my dog is going through the worst pain in his life due to their disorganized operations (they gave a 7lb senior Chihuahua 3 shots in one sitting, including one that he wasn't due for and one that is dangerous given his history of seizures and heart surgery). As with other reviews, when you do decide to call them out for negligence and provide feedback, the owner Dr. Teich may (instead of taking accountability and making corrections to safeguard future patients) tell you you are being "disrespectful" towards his staff. This practice must review their entire operations to make sure they go back to the level of attention and care they had when they first opened. Full stop.

I love it here and so does my dog. We have been going there since he was a puppy and everyone there is always so friendly and happy to see him. When I schedule an appointment online, they almost always call within an hour, ask for symptoms, talk with me about what's going on and three out of four times will tell me just to monitor him and what signs watch for that would indicate he should to come in. As a semi-hypochondriac dog parent, I can't tell you how much I appreciate this. They could easily charge me 500 bones to tell me my dog has seasonal allergies, but they have never done that.

My experience is a bit different as I am a first time foster and had vaccinations for my foster dog that were due. City Dogs and City Kitties DC partners with District Vet. I just want to clarify that due to this relationship, I did not pay anything out of pocket and cannot speak to pricing or veterinary services offered. The vet tech came out and took her back and took care of the vaccinations that were due. She also trimmed her nails. I had noticed her long nails but as it was only our 3rd day together, had not yet found a moment to brave the task. They also took the time to address and answer a few other general concerns that I had. I just think if I got this kind of treatment as a rescue partner, how amazing an experience it must be for all their customers and your family fur babies. I highly recommend District Vets. Here is a picture of adoptable Isra (left) and adoptable Rahini (right) hiding out together in the waiting room.

I met Dr. Teich in 2008 (pre-District Vet) when I adopted a rescue dachshund and needed a new vet. He has now been my vet for 1 cat and 4 dachshunds (2 current). One of the locations, Brookland, is a few minutes from my house making it convenient. I will go to Eastern Market when I want my little one's to see Dr Teich specifically. He's great with my dogs (all of which have been rescues and can come with interesting personalities...aside from the dachshund thing!). I have also seen other vet's and the experience was just as great. When my first dachshund was diagnosed with congestive heart failure - they could not have done more to get me up to speed quickly. I had to take him to urgent care immediately and the vet at District made the arrangements calling ahead and getting them updated. He was under the care of District Vet and a cardiologist and did very well for several years - he was 11 when he was diagnosed. The front desk staff are terrific, I'm never rushed, and never sold the priciest option - just the best option. This is a very busy veterinary business and they are always polite, ready to help, and professional. I always get a check in email the next day to make sure the littles are doing well. Finally, the staff really go out of their way to make the animals feel comfortable. Auntie Devin has pet sat for me and knows my boys when they come in. Everyone seems to love what they do and THAT makes all the difference in customer service.

I am touched when I find a professional like Dr. Berdahl who is competent and also tender. Because she doesn't need to be kind to do her job, but she was very kind. It makes me want to Yelp. I am amazed when I find a clinic staffed with lovely people like Patrice, who was warm and accessible when we needed her. I am so grateful that we came to The District Veterinary Hospital when we did, with a very sick but dear friend, who was dying on a Friday. We were in acute need and we were very vulnerable. They could have taken advantage of us financially. The could have turned us away. We were strangers to them but they did everything just right - personal but not intrusive, efficient but patient, clinical but not cold. May Yelp forgive me for being sentimental in Washington D.C. in 2109, but if we could care for each other as well as The District Veterinary Hospital cares for our pets, it would be a better world.

So sleek & perfectly groomed! Thanks Auntie Devin!

My large Siamese cat became very matted from last year due to my becoming ill and unable to keep up with his grooming. When I tried to catch up, his coat was too far gone and he refused to let me cut out the mats, and I knew he would have to be anesthetized for this. No regular groomer will touch a cat that hisses and might scratch and bite when groomed and bathed. I called a lot of vet hospitals and finally found one at Eastern Market in SE DC that does sedation/ anesthetizing to do a complete shave down, bath and nail trim. "Auntie Devin" is their groomer, and she did a WONDERFUL job. He looks and smells great and feels so nice to pet again.

Interested to know how their fees compare to other vets for wellness exams. Are the vets open to more conservative treatment plans as opposed to pushing every diagnostic test and referrals to specialists, etc.?

But now that I've had a few months to reflect, establish a great relationship with another hospital nearby and consult with my sister (also a vet) I was left feeling so uncomfortable and upset about my experience here this summer. I originally came here because my former vet had begun working here. My dog was diagnosed with nasal cancer earlier in the year and while I was away on a short trip, it appeared as though the tumor looked to have doubled in size just in a matter of days. When I got home, I set up an appointment immediately and was hoping to reconnect with my old vet (who is wonderful.) Unfortunately, although it seemed like he was on the schedule for booking that day, I received a call the morning of the appointment indicating that he was actually out and that I would be seen by another vet. Because the priority for me was that my dog be examined by a medical professional ASAP, I kept the appointment. The tech was very nice and so was the vet, however after a brief exam and being given an antibiotic and steroid (per my sister's suggestion) the vet pretty much told me I needed to make an end of life decision for my dog over the weekend. When I asked if she thought I had enough time to take my dog up to NYC by Wednesday for my sister to also examine him, I was told she couldn't confidently say he'd make it until then. I left with my heart shattered, so confused and conflicted because he was still eating, playing, sleeping well and otherwise behaving "okay" aside from the slow growing mass on his face. As a family, we decided this was not the direction we wanted to go in and I set up an appointment at District Vet at Eastern Market. My dog lived for an additional 5 MONTHS after that appointment. If I were to have just blindly taken her suggestion, I would have missed out on almost half a year of our time together. Additionally, two days later the swelling over his head that appeared rather abruptly ruptured. Turns out it was just an abscess! I'm so confused why this wasn't identified as a possibility considering the rest of the tumor was firm, while the newest inflammation was soft and appeared rapidly within a few days. Thankfully, I was able to have the abcess drained and cared for and my dog was able to enjoy life in the months ahead with palliative care and monthly steroid treatments at District Vet- Eastern Market. I'm so glad I took my dog elsewhere for a follow-up and trusted my gut that it wasn't his time. Now that my dog has passed away, I thought it would be helpful to share my experience in case it could be helpful to anyone else in the future.

This review has been a long time coming (yes, that's a Taylor reference)…read more.. TL;DR: They, literally, watched my dog decline (and die the next day) in front of their eyes DURING our appointment and said "you'll have to make another appointment." So let's go back... We're new to the 'hood. We come in with our two fur babies for getting their shots updated. They actually muzzle Ozzie. Dear reader, he is 12 lbs and had 2 teeth. Even our cat just stands her ground and is all "yeah, ok." Big bark and, literally, no bite. He was terribly abused when we got him. And he's absolutely the sweetest thing. The one tech, literally, jumped up on the table to get away from him. And he didn't even approach her, he just barked. He's a traveler and we're movers. He's been to over 10 vets in different cities. This was the first time anyone had the audacity to muzzle him. There was no need. Huge red flag. (And has we tell this story to our neighbors, we hear "OMG, same thing here!" These are vets and techs who straight up do NOT like animals and do NOT know how to work with them.) So despite that first drama and red flag, we go back. Eddie is 14.5 yrs old and suddenly can't really walk well. We make an appointment and take him in. DURING the appointment he goes from walking in the door to his back legs, literally, no longer working. He couldn't stand, move, or anything. We're in tears. The vet says "Well, that's not the reason you made the appointment, so you'll need to make a new appointment." Uh, no, this was the reason. There's something happening. Welp, dear reader, he passed that weekend. We left this place and went immediately to VEG (the ER vet), who then sent us for an MRI in the middle of the night at a vet ER in Annapolis. The next morning, we got the call that a tumor was, very literally, breaking his back. The vet here gave him gabapentin and kicked us out. WHILE SHE, LITERALLY, WATCHED HIM GO FROM WALKING TO NOT BEING ABLE TO MOVE HIS BACK LEGS. What. The. Actual. Fuck. The people here do NOT care about your pets. Not in the slightest. They are rude. They are scared of the animals they claim to "treat." They are the worst. I cannot comprehend how they have good reviews. And yet, everyone we talk to in the neighborhood relays stories like ours. If you love your pet, do NOT take them here. Stay far far away. They are worthless and uncaring. Never in my life of 10+ different vets in different states have we ever encountered such "treatment."

# Do Not Recommend - Poor Communication and Rushed Care…read more **1/5 stars** I do not recommend this place at all if you are seeking best-in-class advisement regarding health care for your pet. My experience here was deeply disappointing and concerning. I took my pet to Good Vet Wharf DC on February 2025 for a consultation. When I explained my pet's symptoms to Dr. Nafisi, he seemed to be in a rush to get to other pet patients. While he did recommend that I follow up with additional testing for my pet, he did NOT take the time to explain the urgency of the test in relation to my pet's symptoms. Since my pet had a positive physical exam, I did not understand that this was an essential test that needed immediate attention. This lack of communication stands in stark contrast to my previous veterinarian, who I only stopped seeing due to relocating to a new area. My former vet would always take the time to explain and stress the significance of any recommended tests and their timing to ensure optimal pet health, which I always acted on immediately, especially if I was made aware that the symptoms could be relevant to any major health issue(s). This thorough communication helped me make informed decisions about my pet's care. When I brought these concerns about the poor communication to Dr. Nafisi's attention by phone, his response was shocking. He claimed that explaining test urgency and significance was the responsibility of the intake staff, which is ridiculous since at the time of the appointment, the intake staff was not in the room during my pet's physical examination. The intake staff only bears the responsibility of providing a report on what exams and vaccinations are due. Dr. Nafisi did not share any veterinary expertise to inform proper care for my pet, essentially deflecting his professional responsibility to educate pet owners. While my pet was ultimately seen at another veterinary practice for her care and eventually passed away, I am taking the time to forewarn other pet owners about this practice. They appear to be too focused on opening new locations versus their duty of care to animals and their pet owners. Proper education of pet parents should be a fundamental part of veterinary care, not an afterthought delegated to non-medical staff. Pet owners deserve veterinarians who will take the time to thoroughly explain their pet's condition, recommended treatments, and the urgency of follow-up care. Unfortunately, Good Vet Wharf DC failed to meet this basic standard of veterinary practice.
