ALWAYS GET A 2ND OR 3RD OPINION before getting treatment at this location. I waited months to write this ro make sure my opinion isnt bases only on emotions but what happened. 1. I had my cat of almost 15 years euthanized based on the veterinarian opinion. Before hand they give you all the time you need alone with your pet. Needless to say I was in a room crying. After crying in the room. As I walked out of the room. A female doctor was imitating a fake ugly cry while the 2 other female doctors were laughing. I was literally just in the room crying. When the procedure is done they stop talking to you. I stood there for 15 minutes. They literally forgot to get rhe paw prints and fur. I had to remind them The lady at the front desk was very nice. They better not ever fire her cause her friendly demeanor is helping their business. The female doctors are catty like teen from mean girls. 2. They judged me based on my appearance. I felt bad about myself. Like I made them uncomfortable. I believe it was my hairstyle that was a distraction because the doctor couldnt hold eye contact without looking at my hair. 3. I felt judged because of my financial situation. I obviously dont expect and didnt ask anyone to work for free. I went there out of desperation for suggestions and to buy pain medicine and ointment to clean my cat eyes. 4. I did not like the way they made my cat scream. If she had done that before I wouldnt think anything of it. However she has NEVER screamed like that which is why I believe it was intentional. I regret taking her there in her last moments. I still remember that scream. I just pray she was fully transitioned and that I made the right decision for her. Please dont wait to get insurance. Get a 2nd opinion because ive met other pet owners who vets worked with them far as payment or showing them how to do certain things at home to care for their pet and cut cost. This clinic is amazing - if you have any kind of emergency with your pet, do not hesitate to bring them to VEG. The ENTIRE staff is incredible; they keep a surprisingly calm environment, they exude the deepest empathies, and they'll explain repeatedly without judgement. A Heartfelt Thank You to an Exceptional Team! On July 3rd, our beloved cat Poe passed away suddenly from a stroke. It was completely unexpected and devastating. As we rushed to the hospital, we called ahead and from the moment we arrived, the entire team dropped everything to try to save him. Their urgency, care, and compassion were immediate and deeply felt. When it became clear that there was nothing more that could be done, aside from prolonging his pain for a short while longer, they were honest with us. Not cold, not clinical, but clear and compassionate. They spoke with empathy, but didn't sugarcoat how much Poe was suffering, and helped us make the most humane and loving choice. They gave us all the time we needed to be with him. They made him comfortable and never rushed us. When the time came, they handled everything with such quiet grace. Even after Poe had passed, they gently walked us through what came next, providing aftercare options and instructions so that we didn't have to think during such an emotionally overwhelming time. A week later, we received a handwritten sympathy card from the team. Not just a signed card! Each and every team member had written a personal note. It was very touching. I've always gone to Friendship Hospital for medical emergencies because I had a primary vet there and it's one of the few 24 hour animal hospitals in DC. However, this past week when my dog began losing mobility and wouldn't eat or drink, Friendship was at capacity and they suggested I head over to VEG. Thank goodness for that referral because I think from here on out I will come here first, because the experience I had was wonderful and I'm so grateful for the team here. From the moment I walked in and was greeted, each and every person working there was absolutely calm, kind and professional. I was immediately taken to the back waiting area which was also in the same space where the exams took place. I've never been to an animal hospital that had that as an option but it was so nice because I was able to hold my dog and comfort him while we waiting for the exam, lab results etc. Dr. P was the primary vet that saw my dog and she was the absolute loveliest - genuine, caring, gentle, personable and professional. You truly can't ask for more than that. She was direct but kind and talked me through all of the possibilities and paths of how to best help my dog. He's doing much better now thankfully, but should if something arise again I would not hesitate to bring my dog back here as my #1 option. Dr. McKinley and all of the staff were wonderful when my kitty Freddie Prince recently had to have emergency surgery. What is different about VEG when compared to the other animal hospital (in Tenleytown) is that you can stay with your pet the entire time he is under care. I used to hate surrendering my pet at the other animal hospital and then being stuck in the waiting room for hours and hours and having no information about how things were going. Dr. McKinley successfully extracted a button (surprise!) that had lodged between my cat's stomach and small intestine. I am deeply grateful to Dr. Lopez for the compassion and care shown to 11 year old child and his beloved 16-year-old Yorkie, DoG, during his final moments. Words can't describe how grateful I am for VEG. I thought my 10 y/o Chihuahua was having a life-ending seizure (turns out she'd consumed THC). I ran into the ER completely inconsolable and panicked. The VEG team wasted no time. They immediately ran tests and walked me through possible diagnoses. They handled my baby with such compassion and care; the team's love for animals was very evident. I will forever recommend VEG to any fur baby owners in need of immediate care. From the second you walk in, you are in immaculate care. I have taken my fur baby Hugo here on multiple occasions (an off leash dog attacked mine while on we were on a walk, and an accidental ingestion) and each every time he recieved IMMEDIATE care and triage. VEG lets you be with your animal throughout the entire process of care and emergency services. You are provided with complete transparency on their services, the invoice up front, and they will do whatever it takes to save your precious soul mate. I have gone to this location (DC VEG), the Tyson's VEG and the Chantilly VEG. I cannot recommend them enough. I should have left this review earlier for other pet parents but I just went to the Chantilly location and recieved the same type of immaculate care and decided I needed to post this. Earlier this year my dog was having a tough go of it and seems to have gotten the dog flu that was going around. My vet is closed on Wednesday's for surgery, so I called Friendship (where we have been in the past) but when they heard he had a cough they said we couldn't come in. I called VEG and they told me to come right over. I really like how they send you a text to check-in so when you arrive you're all set. It is $195 just to walk in the door but when it's an emergency, it's an emergency. I appreciated the upfront pricing right off the bat. Upon arrival we were the only people in the waiting room but due to his cough my dog had to wear a "mask" which was a cotton hairnet. It was a little absurd because it really wasn't blocking anything and he was just sitting with me but I'm a rule follower and my dog is a good boy so we complied. The vet came out to the waiting room to quickly check him out and then we were then brought to a freshly cleaned room (the cough room that day). My dog was given an IV of fluid, probiotics, antibiotics and some canned food to get him started with a bland diet. After two nights of no sleep as he woke me up to go out, I was grateful for the help and within a few days he was feeling so much better. Is it pricey? Yes, but I used my pet insurance and the quick speed in which they took care of my dog on a Wednesday was exactly what I needed. Thank you VEG! read more

Our dog, Tofi, was attacked by another dog at a park about 2 weeks ago. We brought her to VEG in Georgetown and were immediately ushered into a private room. Tofi was given pain killers and assessed. During the wait, we were constantly updated and reassured. We did have to wait for the vets to operate on another dog, but once they were ready to operate on Tofi, they did a great job sewing her up and taking care of her open wound. We were met with a lot of care and compassion. We really appreciate all of the kindness and care she (and we) experienced. We had to return several times for wound care and the wait was not too bad. They all showered a lot of love on Tofi. We particularly liked how they encouraged dog parents to stay and be present to comfort their dog baby. Thank you to all of the wonderful vets and vet nurses! For two and a half hours no one from the medical staff came to take a look or prescribe a medication. The answer was that they had one dog ahead of us. They literally ignored helping my dog. Im so disappointed in writing this review because my first experience here was AMAZING!!! About 2/3 Mondays ago I lost my dog and she was found and ended up in the shelter for 2 days and she was lost on one of the coldest nights of the week. I picked her up Wednesday and Thursday night i see she is experiencing Kennel Cough. It was so severe i got alarmed so I decided to come back here for treatment because of my last experience that was great. i saw Dr Taylor Bryant and let's just say she is not the sharpest knife in the drawer and very money hungry. A simple kennel cough visit cost me $1,577 with a refunded $95 after questioning my visit. I dropped my dog off at the clinic and after giving Dr Bryant some history on my dog she gave her Butorphanol "a pain reliever" did some scans/xray and sat her in an oxygen tank before i left to grab food. Once i came back "30/45 mins later" im sitting for 20 minutes before Dr Taylor even says anything to me about my dog. Once we began talking she initially had no idea what was wrong with my dog until i press her "i just paid $1577 I NEED SOME RESULTS", then she told me my dog has Heart Murmurs, my dog is 10, so it seemed believable UNTIL she suggested i keep my dog in an oxygen tank till 8am "its 2am at this point" and all this was going to cost AN ADDITIONAL $1500. I may have been born at night but not last night. I took her to an independent doctor and he did 2 test, got my dogs history and determined my dog had kennel cough. Btw i only paid $126 and received a prescription that actually worked for my dog. The medication i was prescribed at Veg did not work. I only gave my dog half of pill of what the other doctor prescribed and my dog instantly stop breathing heavy and is starting to become her normal self. I told my issues to the Medical Director Jeanine and she was a rude bitch!!! If im coming to you describing an issue, why is your response to ask me if I'm have a question for you when initially i called to share my experience. I WILL NEVER COME BACK TO THIS HOSPITAL WITH THESE INCOMPETENT PEOPLE. I wasted $1500 for nothing. Btw my same dog came here about 2 years ago from an accident and her eye was out of the socket, like literally about to pop out and she was sedated, operated on and had after care for $1400. So for my same dog to have kennel cough and the charge was $1500 is baffling. Beware of Dr Bryant. read more

This place is about their coins. We brought our cat in on a Sunday morning because he was feeling out of it and had a slight fever. VEG had really good reviews, our regular vet was closed, so we headed over asap. We were put in a room and our cat was seen pretty quickly--took his temperature, etc. Pretty quickly, we received a text: here's what we want to do, here's the cost. $2,500. Let me jump ahead and say, we took him home an hour or so later, started him on antibiotics, and he improved immediately--was back to normal the next day. This is important because it turned out he had nothing more than a little cold--but the vet bill they sent us had them testing him for everything under the sun, including a $500+ fee for running a "Fever of Unknown Origin" test. I had some questions. I was unsure why they wouldn't run a couple tests to determine what was going on, rather than run--and charge--for all of the tests at once. Process of elimination. I mentioned to one of the techs in the small waiting room with us, "If I have a sore throat, my doctor is gonna test me for strep throat first, then bronchitis, then move into more severe things (rheumatic fever, etc). He's not gonna test me for all of them at once." Her response? "This is the Gold Standard--nobody's forcing you to get the Gold Standard." She said this so often, and without answering my questions, that I finally said "'Gold Standard' is just a phrase--it doesn't have any real meaning. Good care is good care." I asked about, for instance, the $80 charge for taking the cat's blood pressure--my regular vet includes this as part of a check-up and charges $20 when it's not part of a check-up--and I got a long discussion about how cats are hard to handle and they get nervous and hard to handle and I said "You just stuck a thermometer in his a** and he didn't even flinch, so I think he's good with a tiny armband." Yes, I was getting frustrated. They kept asking "Well, if you don't want the Gold Standard of care, how much do you want to pay?" Girl, what? I want some basic answers about what might be happening and the least invasive care the cat needs. If he has a slight fever and no other symptoms, treat for that. Don't treat for cancer if he's just got a cold. Eventually, I said OK, give us whatever $1200 will pay and they took some blood and sent us on our way with a round of antibiotics, and that's the end of any story I'll ever write again about this place. One young lady in particular was lovely with our cat, and told us to save our pennies by getting some of the tests done the next day with our regular vet if necessary (it wasn't)--but from the minute I sat down in the waiting room, I had the strong + unpleasant feeling that money was uppermost on their minds. Never had that feeling before at a vet, have had animals and vet bills all my life, so this was definitely unusual. read more

Around 1 AM, my pup woke me up, shaking and panting, and proceeded to have unprovoked bloody diarrhea that she could not control. I was a little delirious and a lot worried so I called VEG and then brought her in for an appointment. While they only had two nurses working that late into the night, I witnessed the most caring, compassionate, gentle staff. Even though I would wait 1 million hours to make sure my girl is OK, they continually apologized for the wait and made sure Winnie was taken care of. They made me feel very at ease and assured me that she would be ok. The treatment plan was seamless, and they were just so kind. I went to VEG M St on Oct 7 with my cat who had a large amount of fluid in his abdomen. Much like other reviewsbelow, we were seen immediately and then placed in a room to sit for 2+ hours with no further care. I made a complaint and the doctor rushed to look at the cytology under the microscope but at that point I was frustrated with their inabililty to walk and chew gum at the same time. I went to my vet the next day and had a full panel of labwork done and my cat had 600 mls of fluid removed from his belly. Something VEG never offered but had an estimate for me of $2500 for other work they were planning to do. My vet really wanted my cat to get an ultrasound done on his belly to rule out tumors but their schedule was too full and she didnt want to wait on this scan. So I called VEG and their vet on staff at the time said she would get their radiologist to come in and do the scan later that evening and that was really great. We arrived at 730 pm and the ultrasound was performed at 8 pm. Unfortunately we received news he had cancer. The staff vet talked to us about palliative care and we wanted to do that, but I requested that they send this full report to my vet. Two days later still no report was sent. This is really upsetting to me, but more importantly this oversite is really more a function of a breakdown in procesess at this site. I came to VEG with my sick kitty because it has SUCH great reviews compared to other emergency vets in the area. I didn't know until I arrived why - VEG has a whole different philosophy and approach from other ER vets. We were greeted at the door by a vet tech who immediately brought us and our kitty to an examination table. Yes, you can stay with your pet the entire time. And the entire main exam area is an open floor plan, so you're able to see what other emergencies the vet and the team are dealing with. During the time we were there, we saw a dog come in having a seizure, and I was so impressed with how quickly the staff team all came together to triage her immediately. It looked like an ER in a hospital. It turned out our kitty was at the end of her life. The vet was empathetic, compassionate, and realistic as she shared the test results, treatment options, and likely outcomes. They were also able to stabilize her so that we could take her home to say goodbye. We were (are) devastated, but so grateful for the care and compassion the team at VEG showed us. read more

Sparky had an injury at the groomer, his whole claw was gone and totally exposed. Sparky is my blue point Himalayan cat... they sat us in a room so he gets comfy and two nurses came and took his temperature and weight. Can't believe he is only 4.7 pounds after the shave, he was 7 pounds ! (Lol) anyway, he looks like a squirrel now. The staff at VEG included us in all aspects of her care - we never had to leave her side: not while we waited for the operating room to be prepped, watched her surgery thru the OR window, keep her calm post-op as the vet tech prepared her to EKG monitoring or sat with her at/in her kennel thru the next two days she was there. VEG is the only emergency pet hospital that didn't leave me in the waiting room not knowing how my pet was. I was PART of her care. I was made to feel welcome and could ask anyone anything. Do not go to Friendship. Do not go to South Paws. Go here, to VEG. They are better than both. I have had many pets, plus I also do rescue, so I know the vet scene in DC, and VEG wins. Here's why I like VEG better than the other two emergency places. Friendship once estimated $2,000 for a procedure, and then handed me a bill for exactly DOUBLE that amount when I picked up the dog. Yes, they have good veterinary services, but they simply **don't care** what they do to you financially. South Paws is better than Friendship, but they charged $1,600 for a cat that strained his back and was in pain. Really, $1,600? For an x-ray and some pain killers? VEG wasn't cheap at $1,000 for sedation and biopsy, but the doctor assured me that what she estimated was what I would pay, period. No surprise bills. I am pretty certain that they figured out what the other two were doing, and deliberately chose a price point that was still spendy, but way, way, WAY better, with a saner system for getting paid (upfront). If it was just about money, VEG would win, but they are also nicer. The front desk staff at Friendship are battle-hardened from years of being screamed at over bills (I swear I never did that), and they can be defensive and cold. Staff at South Paws are better, but they're firm and all business. Meanwhile, VEG let me stay with my pet, they were sweet to me, and they told me the price on the spot instead of doing all the treatment and then giving me a wicked surprise later. BTW, this is only an emergency place. If you want a regular vet I recommend District Veterinary. For annual checkups, shots, etc., they are my go-to and I particularly love Dan Teich for dogs (he was a hero and came to my house once when a dog could not be moved), and Brant Hassell for cats. But if your pets, like mine, have their troubles on Sunday mornings, Friday nights, etc., never on Tuesday morning when you can get an appointment, then VEG is a dream. This place provides OUTSTANDING care! I drove all the way from Charles County Md on a friend's recommendation to spend the last moments with my very sick senior dog. The staff was so compassionate and caring. Dr. D sealed the whole experience with her very caring understanding of how loved my dog was and provided the space for my dog's extraordinary passing. I would definitely recommend VEG for fur baby parents who truly want to experience CARE. read more
