Our cats have been patients here for approximately 10 years. I am very happy with the care and attention that we get, particularly, when we have needed it the most. There have been times when the practice is very busy and it has been hard to get an appointment, but I still recommend them for anyone close by. We have gone through routine visits, tooth extraction surgery, sick visits and even euthanasia. The prices are reasonable for the area and I don't ever feel pushed to do more than I am comfortable with. read more

For 10 yrs we have been taking our fur family members to Dr. Wehrli. We were happy with the care they received for yearly appointments and small issues we had faced. Recently we lost our Flemish Gaint Rabbit after weeks of care and failed attempts to cure a case of the sniffles that worsened to include a bladder infection. After a call to Dr. Wehrli, he was willing to allow me to stop by the office (day after his 2nd office visit) to pick up several critical care items since Tater Tot had not been eating and his overall health was noticeably worsened. Less that an hour later, I spoke with the front desk to inform them TaterTots Meds were ready to be picked up from the pharmacy and I no longer needed the antibiotic Dr. Wehrli had offered to prepare for me but I was currently on my way to pick up the other 2 items. The man I spoke with reminded me that they closed at 1pm that day and I said I will be there, driving there now. I arrived to the door at 1:02pm... doors locked, no lights and no movement. I even went around back and knocked on that door searching for some one to answer. I called several time and was put straight through to answering machine. This was 22 minutes after I had called and spoken to him (front desk). I was able to start Tater Tot on his 2nd round on antibiotics that afternoon after picking up from the compounding pharmacy. However he didnt get his critical care food suppliment until a day later because of having to order on Amazon. Tater Tot pasted away on 6/1/25... to date, no response to my email or signs of comdolances to our loss have been received by Family Pet Veterinarain. .... I will never return to this Veterinarain Office. read more

Dr Nate Wherli and his staff members were friendly, efficient, and trustworthy. Would highly recommend to friends to take their fuzzy loved ones here. We had a full new patient exam, 5 vaccinations, blood test done in under 30 min. Explained each parameter of the exam and commented as he went along. Explained which tests and vaccinations were necessary and which were voluntary, and which were unnecessary. Got preventative medications. Answered all my questions about the preventatives and any follow up that needed to be done. All I felt were very reasonably priced. Most of all, I felt comfortable knowing Dr. Nate and his staff were taking good care of my little guy. They were very flexible with scheduling which I appreciated since my schedule can change radically day of due to work. They do have Saturday hours. Phones can be busy but if you leave a vmail or email for them, they respond within a day. The clinic itself was very clean and organized. Had coffee!! They had treats for dogs, cats, humans, coffee, and a giant tail-less bearded dragon - entertaining for everyone in the animal kingdom. This veterinarian practice has spayed both my cats and has given them their feline distemper and rabies vaccinations without issues. My cats have remained healthy and in good care in their hands and when I needed medical history paperwork for our cats health insurance, they very responsively provided detailed reports. When my husband inquired about the need for an annual rabies vaccination the veterinarian was able to provide a very well articulated and researched response for why a yearly versus three year rabies vaccination would provide less health risks to our cats. We felt confident after his explanation that we were in capable hands. We've been happy with their services, scheduling availability, and pricing and would recommend them to others. We also love seeing the lizard in the front entrance waiting area who seems well cared for. read more

Wouldn't recommend it for euthanizaia, I'm haunted by my poor little dogs treatment there. I didn't get to hold her, they took her in back to place the catheter then brought her in facing a wall. Seemed like she was murdered right in front of me. He's kind of young for a solo practice. The gal came in and presented the bill right in the middle of it. He indicated that was because he preferred ppl. not cry in the waiting area. I'm not a crier and it just made me angry. Never forgive myself for taking her there. Seemed painful for her in the end and it was shocking. Not my friends' experience with their dogs demise. They seemed in a rush. Maybe it's not surprising since he's the only vet there. read more

I'm new to the area and have taken my two senior dogs here a handful of times. The vet is friendly and answered all of my questions during exams, but in my limited experience with the clinic as a whole, the receptionists do not (ever) return voicemails, and most recently, it took them nearly a week + 2 voicemails + an e-mail to fax over a prescription to my pharmacy for my pet. Pricing is fair, but if you're looking for a "family feel" from your vet, e.g. staff who love their jobs and whole-heartedly invest in the care of their patients/clients, this isn't the place for you and your pets. It's more of a basic service provider than a warm, friendly family vet. read more

Dr. Nate was our vet for years. He and his staff were wonderful, providing thorough, kind and affordable care; great patient education; and excellent record keeping and follow up. We appreciated his attention to preventive care and his generally conservative approach, meaning he didn't suggest invasive procedures as a first response, opting instead to try other kinds of treatment first (which in our situations were the best approaches). He was great with an elder cat we had who was miserable with car rides and always showed up covered in vomit and poop; he helped diagnose another cat's heart condition while preparing for a dental cleaning; and he helped us care for a young rescue cat and integrate him into our household. We moved away, otherwise, we would still be going to the Family Pet Veterinary Practice. read more

Update: Deducted 1.5 stars because there prices are a bit steep $700+ for two dogs and very basic immunizations. walk- in nail trimming is a lie. Front desk turned me away in the pouring rain for a nail clip without even consulting with the vet because they were "waiting on three clients, then he has lunch." Nail trim takes five minutes and the vet isn't the one who does it most of the time anyway. Was pretty pissed off about it and will probably make me look for another vet in the meantime. Don't tell me about services that aren't true. I didn't need to talk with the vet and I didn't need to do anything special. Went to PetSmart instead. The parking lot is crazy busy. Additional parking in back (although it fills up too). I don't know if I found the perfect vet yet. Will keep looking. So far so good. Nice clean facility. welcoming staff and veterinarian. My dogs needed a new vet since our old one retired in December. My old 15 year old doggie had an infected dew claw. Was able to get an appointment for the next day. The visit was not rushed very informative. They filled prescription for antibiotics on the spot and they are reasonably priced. 14 pills for about $10. And 14 pain relievers for about $5. Still more than if I bought it for humans but about a fourth the cost of another vet we tried years ago. My other dog was also able to get a nail trim while we were there. Overall, A+ service. His office is super clean and scheduling each time has been a breeze; appointments are easy to schedule and times have been very convenient for me. We had another great visit for some urgent intestinal problems my kitty developed upon our recent move. Dr. Wehrli was thorough & kind, taking his time to consider all the factors that might be contributing to kitty's upset. After much-needed anal gland maintenance, some prescription diet and pro-biotic remedies and a lab sample, we're home and her yowling has already subsided. No sedation necessary, no skittish nervous reaction like she has had at past vets, and a very reasonable fee. We're so happy to finally have a great family vet! read more

It took me a long time to write this review, but I took my chinchilla here when he was sick. Unfortunately, he did pass, but it was one of those horrible situations where nothing could be done. Family Pet Veterinary Practice got me in quickly, the staff and Dr. Nate were all very kind and patient, and the prices were very reasonable. The office was quaint and clean. It's exactly the kind of environment you want when you're a frazzled, emotional wreck--as weird as that sounds. Having been through this process before at another vet practice, I cannot say how much the thoughtful attention to detail - talking us through what would happen, providing a comfy, warm blanket for our boy, getting the paperwork handled up front, and checking in with us regularly throughout- made this painful experience easier. We even received a beautiful condolence card with personal, meaningful messages from Dr. Kimberly and many other office staff in the mail this week. My cat Miguel was a patient with this practice from 2018-2020, up until when we moved to DC. I have had good experiences with Dr. Wherli and Dr. Kimberley for my cat's annual exams, vaccines, dental cleanings and occasional issues around urination. The office is small and unpretentious. The front desk staff are kind, though sometimes the service can be scattered and there is a lack of follow through and follow up especially with emails. In my experience, unfortunately it was not possible to communicate with the vets after hours, even for quick issues or concerns. Pricing seemed fair for the area. Overall, this is a solid, reliable choice for vet care in the Silver Spring area though there is some room for improvement in terms of level of service. read more

Let me begin to explain my bad experience with this practice. We selected this particular vet because of the wonderful reviews on YELP and proximity to our home. From the moment we dropped off our 6 month old puppy at 8:30 am on 6/18/19 for a spay surgery, we had a bad feeling. The technician told us that the doctor would call us at around 12 noon to give me us an update on the surgery. The doctor ended up calling us at around 3pm. In the meantime, we were worried sick that something had happened to our puppy. We picked up the puppy at around 5pm that day. She had some blood on the incision, and in my opinion, she should have been cleaned up much better. Dr. Wehrli explained the post operative care and was somewhat dismissive and told me that everything I needed to do was written in the paper that he was giving to me. I still had some follow-up questions but he seemed impatient and didn't want to answer any more questions. Our puppy came home. We knew that the first two days or so would be the hardest. She was in pain, didn't want to eat or drink and was lethargic. By the way, we never received a follow up call after the surgery. On day 3, I decided to call the vet because she was getting worse and we were worried. It was after business hours, 6:05 pm, and I left a lengthy message explaining how concerned we were about our puppy's health. I was expecting a call early the next day but that didn't happen. When I started calling at 9am the next morning, I was getting a busy signal or the beep of a fax machine. I called more than 10 times. I asked a friend who lives very close by to stop and inform the health technicians that I was very worried and wanted to get in touch to tell them about my concerns. When my friend went inside the clinic, one of the technicians told her that she had 11 other people she had to call and that I had to wait. She even showed her the list of the 11 people who were more important than us. My friend called me from there and put me on speaker phone. This technician was very rude and told me that she had not said this. I told her that my puppy had surgery with Dr. Wehrli at that practice and that I couldn't understand how they don't follow-up to calls that should be considered emergencies. This was urgent for us!! At that point, her response was "you can come in but you are going to have to wait a long time." After hanging up, I said to myself, do I want to have my dog be seen by people who clearly have no interest in the well being of your animal. You are just a number there. So sad! I would never recommend this practice to anyone! There is a lack of professionalism! We called another vet who told us to immediately bring our dog because the symptoms she had were not normal. The moment we arrived there, the level of care and compassion was admirable. They immediately took our puppy to the back, gave her chicken and made her comfortable before examining her. It turned out the incision was a bit infected and they had to clean the area really well. She was running a low grade fever, the stitches were attached to some of her fur (they had to cut some hair) and this was causing her pain. The fur was pulling on her stitches. They put a dressing to cover the area. She now doesn't need to wear the cone and is protected. The anti-inflammatory medication that had been prescribed at Family Pet Veterinary Practice was the wrong dosage. They had to adjust it and ended up giving me antibiotics as well. Our Olive left the examining room being a happy, cheerful puppy! We are so lucky that Benson Animal Hospital took excellent care of her. We still need to go back this weekend so that they can change her dressing and monitor the incision since the original sutures performed by Dr. Wehrli might not be binding very well. We will have to keep a close look at this. I wouldn't recommend bringing your pet to Family Pet Veterinary Practice. These past few days have been so draining to our family. I think that we would have appreciated a call from the doctor to ease our concerns. We never received a follow-up call to see how our puppy was. That was all! Just showing us that you care! My kitten was originally scheduled for a standard new pet exam but was scheduled sooner - the same day I started to signs of an upper respiratory infection. I appreciated the flexibility of the staff, as this may not have been an emergency but its good to be proactive about conditions that can quickly worsen. We loved the vet we were taking our 3 year old Havanese to but wanted to support a local business blocks from our home so decided to check out the Family Pet Veterinary Practice. Shortly after they opened, we took Toby in to meet Dr. Nate Wehrli and get a tour of the facilities. While there, Dr. Nate gave Toby a quick clip of his long nails. Toby, although like most dogs, never loving his vet visits, trots into the Family Pet vet Practice with no fear or apprehension. Nate and his staff seem to genuinely care for our little guy and we make a habit of stopping in on a regular basis to pick up a treat or just do a weigh in. After trying out a couple of vets since moving to Silver Spring, I couldn't find one comparable to our vet in DC...FINALLY, we found one! I was able to schedule my first appointment online and the entire process was seamless. The staff were so friendly and Santino felt really comfortable here even though he gets nervous at the vet! The doctor explained everything as he was checking out my little guy and I left feeling like we hit the jackpot! The staff was friendly, they were flexible with appointment times, and I like that they send emailed copies of the appointment notes and invoices. However, Dr. Wehrli claims to treat exotic pets and had zero clue as to what was wrong with my lizard, after two separate appointments. After the second appointment, I took my lizard to SEAVS in Fairfax VA; they diagnosed him with a very common (and serious) illness within minutes of seeing him and began treatment the same day. Additionally, Dr. Wehrli made a joke that my sick, weakened lizard looked dead. Not funny. I do not recommend this clinic for exotic pet treatment. read more

While the staff was very nice, I did not like the approach they had with my cat. I warned the tech as we got into examination room that my cat has high levels of anxiety when we go to the vet. She was a stray before I rescued her, and she does not like when strangers touch her. She gets scared. The doctor and the vet tech did not seem to listen to me at all and both were surprised when my cat responded negatively (becoming vocal and trying to run away) when they tried to touch her for the examination. The doctors basically wound up not doing the exam at all. They backed off pretty much as soon as she became vocal, said they couldn't move forward, and prescribed me sedation pills "for next time", so that she would be easier to handle. We came in because something is actually wrong with her, so it was disappointing that we didn't get any answers. The doctor did not examine her long enough to confirm a diagnosis, but still prescribed us medication for what my partner and I suspected might be the issue before we came into the doctor's office. I understand that my cat can be difficult (as many previously stray and abused animals rightly should be), but I did not expect for the tech and the doctor to give up so quickly when they are supposed to be professional. They maybe tried to examine her for a minute before giving up. It also deterred me that they pushed sedating and medicating my cat rather than trying more natural remedies (or even the use of Feliway, which replicates a natural cat pheromone and is designed to make cats feel more comfortable and safe). My old vet, knowing that my cat did not like the "doctor", would give me these pheromone pads to take home. I would put one in her carrier on the way to the doctor and it would make her a little groggy. It helped us tremendously during visits. Family Pet Veterinary Practice was not prepared at all for an animal that might actually be scared and act defensively. Their initial reaction will be to sedate the animal, which will, of course, cost you a pretty penny just for their own convenience. read more

I found this vet and felt great about the reviews. The staff was all prompt, courteous and professional. Dr Nate is very personable and was great with my VERY vet anxious dog. Prices were reasonable. My dog has zero anxiety about going to see her vet, and literally bounds toward the entrance of the clinic when we get out of the car.
