I took my cat to Apex after noticing she was extremely lethargic, not eating and appeared to be in pain. It was pretty busy when I walked in was told it would be a 2-3 hour wait. I decided to stay given that I was really concerned for my cats well being. When I got there, I was checked in and my cat was triaged pretty quickly. After having my cat in the back for almost 2 hours and no update, the doctor- Dr. Victoria Moncur came out to talk to us. Her diagnosis was 'pregnancy'. I explained to her that there was no way my cat could be pregnant, as she had not left my house and my male cat was neutered. She explained that it could also be pseudo pregnancy, cancer or pyometra- uterine infection, but seemed like she was pretty certain it was a pregnancy?!?!?...... I kept asking if she felt like my cat was in pain and she kept insisting that on her exam, there was no signs of pain or abnormalities. She only decided to give me gabapentin to take home after I kept insisting that I felt my cat was in pain. She also did not seem too concerned about the fact that my cat had not eaten in DAYS! She neglected to do a simple CBC or Chem Profile to try to rule out pyometra and just said I should get my cat spayed. When I followed up with our primary vet the next day, they found that she indeed did have a pyometra and it was SEVERE!... They operated same day as an emergency in order to save her life. If I had followed Dr. Moncur's insistent diagnosis of pregnancy my cat may not be alive right now. This could have also definitely been easily avoided and caught even sooner if simple blood work was done to rule out infection after I kept telling her there was no way of pregnancy. This was definitely very negligent on the doctors part and I do not plan on returning here again. Please be careful with trusting this hospital and especially Dr. Moncur!! read more

I came today to say goodbye to my friend's 24ish year old dog. (The rescue place may have been off 14 years ago when she was adopted.) I wish this place was around a year and a half ago when I had to help my fur baby cross over to rainbow bridge. Everyone we interacted with was very compassionate and they do not rush you at all. You can take as long as you need in one of their patient private rooms. They have a jar of Hershey kisses in the room because they say no pet should leave without tasting chocolate. :) For any emergencies I have with my fur baby, or if I can't get an appointment with my vet, Apex will be my first choice. Note: unlike other vets and emergency places, they do not prepay the cremation charges for you. You will be billed by the crematory and pick up the ashes here in about a week. read more

A speedy urgent care with great staff! I brought our dog here one evening after she at something she really, really shouldn't have. They took her back right away, imaged her, and did everything they could to help. When it turned out she needed a more involved procedure, they referred me out and called ahead so they'd be expecting my dog. I was very pleased with the friendliness of the staff and quality of care. As for price, it seems comparable to other ER vets. Parking is very easy and the waiting room is ample and comfortable. Do not take your pet if he needs immediate assistance without expecting a 1 1/2 hour just to be triage. Not to mention the lab labs and the x-rays expect to spend 3 to 4 hours for a tummy ache. When my cat started passing blood, my regular vet specifically recommended that I immediately go to Apex Vets and I was glad for their advice. This is by far the worst veterinary hospital I have ever dealt with. My dog was treated at Apex for a nail injury that she had already managed to lick despite wearing a cone. The staff cleaned the area and sold me a new cone, repeatedly assuring me that this specific cone would prevent her from reaching the wound. Unfortunately, the exact same issue happened again, she was still able to access and further injure the area while wearing the cone they sold and recommended. I specifically asked multiple times whether this cone would work, and each time I was assured it would. When I called the hospital to explain what happened and seek a resolution, I was met with an extremely rude and unprofessional individual who identified themselves as a manager. There was no accountability, empathy, or attempt to address the situation in a constructive manner. Between the ineffective guidance, the failed equipment recommendation, and the unprofessional response afterward, this experience was incredibly frustrating and disappointing. I would not recommend this facility based on the lack of care, communication, and professionalism shown. read more

My male cat was having urinary issues, so I brought him to Apex Vets. The vet who saw him was adamant there was no blockage, repeatedly insisting he must be urinating elsewhere despite my insistence that was not happening. He then concluded my cat was experiencing urine retention as a side effect of Prozac, and dismissed my further questions even when his explanations were contradictory. He gave my cat a muscle relaxant and sent us home. Within 20 minutes, my cat had lost complete mobility in his hind legs. When I called Apex, I was told to "wait it out." Thankfully, I contacted another ER, where I was told to bring him in immediately. At the second ER, my cat was properly diagnosed with a urinary blockage, hospitalized, and catheterized. Because of the delay, he required additional (and expensive) tests to ensure his hind legs weren't permanently damaged. He didn't regain use of them until the following afternoon. When Apex later followed up, I explained the misdiagnosis, only to be asked, "How did they determine that?" even though I had already explained that catheterization confirmed the blockage. I did receive a full refund which I appreciate, but had I trusted Apex Vets, my cat may not have survived the night. The six hours I spent at Apex Vets was time that my pet could have been receiving the care he urgently needed, and instead we were dismissed and disregarded. We will not be returning. read more

This vet appears to prioritize making huge profits over the welfare of animals and their human companions. My daughter brought her cat in distress to the vet. They told her repeatedly that the cat was "very, Very sick and could die". They suspected heart failure. Then they printed out a list of things they would need to do to confirm the diagnosis. The only actual therapeutic thing they would do would be to give the cat a diuretic and put him in an oxygen tent to help his breathing. He would stay overnight and be assessed by a cat cardiologist who would do an ultrasound of the heart. The bill for all of this was a low estimate of $3500 and a high estimate of $5500. This is for one overnight and a diagnosis. When my daughter made clear that she could not afford those costs and she would find another vet they insisted that this was normal cost for these services in our area. They told her that it would be a huge risk for her to leave with the cat. But of course she had no choice -- she couldn't begin to cover those costs. Basically Apex did everything they could to shame her into paying for something that she could not afford. When the senior tech handed back the cat to my daughter she said "this is a huge mistake. Your cat will die tonight". My daughter was traumatized and overwrought by that statement. She took the cat home. He survived the night, and the next day she went to VEG in downtown DC. They were much more sensitive with her. For around $500 they did the diagnostic work including the ultrasound. They confirmed that the cat has heart failure but have him on an affordable treatment plan (medication and some different approaches at home). They told her the cat could probably live for quite awhile if taken care of properly. This was a few weeks ago now and all seems well. Regardless of how long the cat lives, the way Apex handled the whole situation was appalling. And such a huge contrast with how compassionately and responsibly VEG handled it. I would advise anyone to stay away from Apex. Also the price difference is unbelievable given that Apex is in Wheaton and VEG is in downtown DC read more

We had just moved across the country a week before having to take Ducky in. The staff were extremely informative and understanding. We received care very quick. The staff made sure we left with information about how to follow up if needed. The front desk concierge made sure our check in was quick and easy. The vet tech or vet assistant that initially saw Ducky came out to us and checked Ducky right then and there, she was super careful with her and very sweet and friendly when introducing herself to Ducky and making sure we were comfortable with her holding/carrying her. The doctor that saw Ducky kept us extremely informed and was also extremely sweet with Ducky. She gave us options for what she suggested was the best route of care and made sure we were informed on any red flags that may come up. On Dec 23rd around 8pm our little Pepper was attacked by another animal, resulting in serious injury - fractured skull, fractured vertebrae, fractured and dislocated rib, deep abrasions. Thanks to the amazing work of Apex Veterinary Hospital who diagnosed and stabilized her for transport to the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, we were able to bring her home. I want to give Apex an excellent rating but can't. I used them when my cat, Ollie, had a urinary tract blockage last year and they saved his life. But, 2 weeks ago, my cat, Mookie, was rushed there with labored breathing. He had fluid in his chest that they drained. After 2 nights there, they sent him home. A day later, they called me and said they needed to do another test that would help identify the cause of the fluid. It was supposed to take a week to get the results. Mookie was having trouble breathing again two days ago so back we went. I asked for the test results. They finally admitted they had never sent the test to the lab. Mookie was in a bad way and with no way to quickly determine the exact problem, we ended up losing him. I'm heartbroken. They really acted irresponsibly. I hope they'll be more professional in the future so the animals they care for don't get overlooked like Mookie did. read more

Very good experience at this vet, where I went for emergency services for my Pekingese. She had been coughing and hacking all evening and it got worse so we took her to Apex, I knew it was open till midnight and was very grateful to have it fairly nearby, in Wheaton. All of the staff were very competent and caring, the building and waiting areas were very clean and comfortable. The medical staff was very attentive and answered all our questions as best they could, gave us some options, and some ways to keep the dog comfortable over the weekend. We have a regular vet and they sent an emailed report over to them as well, and printed a version for me. They close for intake at midnight but a staff member assured me they have people there overnight as sometimes pets need to be kept over. That was reassuring. Good place. read more

We've had two experiences with Apex Vets, and both were very good. Our aging dog became unable to walk, resulting in an emergency visit to Apex. The team was very kind and caring, concluding that while serious it was a treatable problem. They prescribed meds, suggested therapies, and referred us back to our primary vet. Happily our dog regained her ability to walk. A few months later our dog reached the point of requiring the proverbial last trip to the vet. On this visit the Apex staff was very compassionate and caring, helping us deal with putting the dog to sleep. While a very sad life moment, the care, love, and compassion showed by the staff was very meaningful. They cared for both our dog and us. They ensured that our dog encountered no discomfort, administered the sedatives in a pleasant room with us in attendance, and coached us through the options when dealing with our deceased dog. At no time did they try to upsell our extract profits from us. The hospital facility is very high quality, the staff is very kind and caring, the medical treatments are expertly administered, and the prices seem very reasonable. Apex Vets opened in November of 2023 offering emergency veterinary care and consultations.They are located right outside of Wheaton Mall in a building across from Dicks and Costco's parking garage. A Sears Outlet was the former occupant of the building. We have two dogs and were happy when we heard an emergency vet was coming to the area. A couple of weeks ago our sweet little dog stopped eating on a Friday evening. She took a little food on Saturday evening but vomited it back up. By Sunday morning she totally rejected any food, even her treats. I called Apex and was told they only took walk-ins and that was fine with us. The hospital is new and is very clean and airy with two comfortable waiting rooms. One has a sign for emergency and the other for consult. But with the emergency area more crowded no one complained when we sat in consult. The waiting areas had comfortable bench seating, lots of windows, a Keurig coffee maker and refrigerated water bottles. Despite being fairly busy, after just a brief wait a technician took our sweet dog back to check her vitals and see the doctor. After the examination the doctor spoke with us and said she didn't see anything alarming. She gave us some options including starting with medication for nausea, an appetite stimulant, and an additional compounded medicine. The other option was to schedule an ultrasound and we decided to try medication first. By Monday afternoon she was still not eating so we called and arranged for the ultrasound. Apparently the radiologist works part-time but we were fortunate that she was available and we could get an immediate appointment. The results were good with nothing serious, no masses or tumors. So we continued on medication and with a follow-up appointment with our regular veterinarian. I'm happy to say that as of now our dog is back to normal, eating with enthusiasm, and begging for treats. The staff at Apex were extremely kind and helpful. The waiting area and consult rooms clean and comfortable. And the location is convenient with plenty of free parking. The prices were in-line with other local emergency vets and even more reasonable than some. One of the staff at our regular vet said they have been getting positive feedback from their clients about Apex Vets. The only negative is there is currently no overnight care. As of now emergency is open 7 days a week, 7:00 a.m. to midnight; consult is open Monday through Thursday 9:00 - 5:00. read more

Very easy parking. Spacious and clean environment - easy to keep pets/people separate. Efficient and friendly front desk staff, had coffee and water available. Vet tech came out quickly to do the initial exam and she was very patient and clear. They took the dog back and came quickly to tell me the results. Although they said it might take 1 - 2 hours since my dog's case was not life threatening, I was back home in less than an hour. Minor: waiting room bench not that comfortable if you have to wait a long time, which fortunately, I did not. They were superb and I would not hesitate to take my pet back if needed. Prior to the actual visit, they also were very helpful on the phone. Each person was great, sorry, do not remember names. I have a 10yr old Great Dane named Camden (for Camden Yards iykyk) with a myriad of health concerns and a lengthy patient record (car accident, pancreatitis, toe amputation including consults w/ a board certified oncologist, etc) and the team at Apex has stunningly outperformed all other medical experiences at various facilities. Camden is a geriatric and heavy (170lbs) Great Dane who I brought to Apex Vets for a serious acute injury. The Apex team under Camden's surgeon Dr. Sarowitz have made a stressful, complicated medical situation for me feel manageable and resolvable in a solution oriented approach. I am an anxious helicopter dog Mom, and I've called Apex so many times that I am shocked Verizon hasn't notified me that I have used up my Unlimited Plan :) I cannot say enough in regard to how much I appreciate the team's care, support and attentiveness; their interactions regarding Camden's well-being are on par with that of my own family. Apex stands out because of their amazing service holistically; from my many calls and emails and the patience and care shown throughout, to the prompt and thorough responses by the Vet team, and above all the outstanding expertise, support and warmth by Dr. Sarowitz. Apex Vets was so kind when we recently had to make the difficult decision to say goodbye to our sweet dog. We had never been there, but they were so generous with us-- the front desk staff, nurses and doctor. We are very grateful. read more

Failed to perform basic stabilization and misinformed us about our options. We brought our sweet kitty here because her primary care provider said she needed fluid removal from her chest in order to have a fighting chance. When we got there, we paid up front for both the initial exam fee and for emergency stabilization. When the doctor saw us, we were pressured to choose between aggressive unaffordable care (we were told the bill could be $10,000 or more, and even then, the prognosis was poor to guarded) and euthanasia. I am strongly against euthanasia because I feel it is against God, and besides, our sweet kitty was still able to purr and eat and walk. I asked about palliative care. I was told that it wouldn't be fair to our sweet kitty because she was suffering, and that if I chose to take her home rather than agreeing to expensive, aggressive care that I couldn't afford, or euthanasia, that I would be leaving against medical advice (AMA). I think they told us it would be pointless to just remove the fluid from her chest without doing all the other treatments that they wanted to do because it would just prolong her suffering. They did offer to run more tests. The list of tests they gave us would have cost a little over a thousand dollars. (This was after her PCP already ran about $1400 in tests.) I asked the nurse if anything on the list would help our sweet kitty feel any better or reduce her suffering, and they said no, it wouldn't, it was just tests. I later found out I was misinformed. One of the tests on the list was Thoracentesis (sometimes spelled thoracocentesis), which is the fancy scientific term for the fluid removal we wanted. Apparently, it's both a life-saving stabilization treatment and a test, because the fluid can be tested for diagnostic purposes after being removed. According to the Vetgirl blog, "A thoracocentesis is often life-saving, and should be performed immediately in any dyspneic patient that is suspected of having pleural effusion." So in other words, once we paid up front for her exam and emergency stabilization, they should have done this as soon as her ultrasound showed the pleural effusion (fluid in her chest), rather than talking to us first about how they thought we should choose between aggressive treatment and euthanasia. For that matter, her primary care provider probably should have done it, but I guess he wasn't confident enough to perform the procedure, perhaps because he didn't have an ultrasound, though if I understand Vetgirl correctly, the procedure can still be done in an emergency even without an ultrasound, it's just a little riskier, but still potentially life-saving. https://vetgirlontherun.com/veterinary-continuing-education-how-to-perform-thoracocentesis-vetgirl-blog/ If I had known that the Thoracentesis was the fluid removal we wanted, and not just a diagnostic test, I would have paid for it, but since the nurse incorrectly said it was just a diagnostic that would not do anything to relieve our sweet kitty's suffering, I did not pay for it. Now I have to live with that regret for the rest of my life. If I'd known, and we'd done it, maybe it would have bought us enough time to do a crowdfunding campaign for our sweet kitty so we could afford more extensive treatment for her. If nothing else, it probably would have helped make her happier and more comfortable during her final days. They did give us three medications for her, including a painkiller. Also, they were wrong about the euthanasia, even from a secular perspective. Even without the Thoracentesis, our sweet kitty was still able to enjoy our affections enough to purr. Although she spent her life as an indoor kitty, on her final day alive with us, I took her outside for several hours and lay next to her on a blanket. She looked so happy to hear all the forest sounds. During her final days, we gave her her last cuddles and pets and massages and purrs and her time outside, and she died at home, surrounded by love and family. She was also able to continue eating tuna and ocean fish pates up until her last day of life. Although her death was not painless, I still think it was less painful than euthanasia, which is done using sodium pentobarbital, which is the same drug used to execute Michael Lee Wilson, who said "I feel my whole body burning" as he was executed. At least I protected our sweet kitty from that. I would likely never bring another kitty to Apex Vets unless it was an emergency and there was literally no place else that was open and nearby. I wish we'd taken our sweet kitty literally anywhere that would have an honest conversation about what Thoracentesis is and how it's a potentially life-saving, pain-relieving procedure and not just a diagnostic test. Given their concern about "prolonging her suffering", I'm still worried that, even if I had signed off on it and paid for it, they would have taken just enough fluid to run their tests, instead of draining it properly. read more
