Deliciousness - 4/5 Happiness - 3.5/5 At the end of the main street of Riomaggiore lies an overlooked gem. It's well worth visiting at the top of the hill for flavorful classic Italian food in Cinque Terre (for those in need of a break from the fish dishes offered by most restaurants). Their pizza list is quite extensive and ranges from Italian specialties to American favorites like chicken and peppers. I got the tuna pizza (never knew that was a thing) and it was really good. The cheese was the perfect consistency and very flavorful (ditto with the buffalo mozzerella appetizer we ordered). The tuna added a unique flavor to the pizza, though I wish there had been more of it added to the pizza. My wife got fresh made pasta and pesto that was also mixed with roasted potatoes (carbo load!). Although the pesto was delicious, the dish was too one-note. Without tomatoes or some other acidic side, the singular pesto flavor simply overwhelmed the pallet. Again, it was a good flavor, but it just needed something to break through the basil. I know this sounds crazy, but make sure you order the seltzer (or in Italy, fizzy) water. They make it in-house and it is hands down the best sparkling water I've ever had. It never lost its effervescence throughout the meal and really energized me. The service was just OK. They never served us the bread that went to other tables (not that we needed more bread, but it was still a somewhat strange oversight) and they rarely came by to see how we were doing. There are lots of selections in Riomaggiore to choose from. Of course, most of the venues are on the main street and are very tourist focused. The one that we found for both excellent service and consistent food quality was Veciu Muin. We were so impressed by the friendly service that we returned to the restaurant the following night for another dinner. The outdoor space was fully occupied both evenings, so we dined indoors. The staff was incredibly responsive throughout both of our meals. The food was well prepared and enjoyable. On the first evening we enjoyed a pizza and a pasta dish. On the second evening we enjoyed a lemon veal dish with potatoes. Prices were very reasonable for both food and wine. Excellent value. Arrive early if you want a seat outdoors. read more

Rio Maggiore is basically closed inn February. That's a fact I wish I had known before we planned a couple of nights stay. Veciu Muin was one of the few restaurants open. Admittedly, we had been nervous about sit-down restaurants in Italy. Most charge a fee to even sit down, and Italy is pretty expensive to begin with, and we feared crummy service due to being American (like other reviews of similar nearby places had stated). Veciu Muin eased our anxieties! Staff was friendly, and we did our best to speak Italian, and they attempted a little English. The prices were fair: -€2.50 Cappuccino -€1.50 Sparkling Water -€10 Pizza (and sizable portions!) -€10 Fish and Chips The cappuccinos were fair, but acceptably priced. The fish and chips were FRESH (no joke, very fishy, with a great breading) -- good, but I wouldn't order them again nor would I recommend. We also ordered a sausage and onion pizza. My husband said it was the best pizza he had ever eaten. Considering I've seen him eels several hundred pizza's in our years, that's pretty impressive. A neighboring table ordered spaghetti with mussels and I was very jealous and wished I had ordered it too. I contemplated ordering it to go but thought better of it, because the portions are quite sizable (another bonus). So, my tip to you would be: don't come to this area in February, and order the spaghetti with muscles from Veciu Muin! read more

Table for 2 - no reservation required! Once in the magical destination of Riomaggiore, you'll find yourself and loved ones hangry. I suggest visiting this restaurant because there was no wait for a small table for 2 (without reservation), the line was small for other larger parties, and the food/service were excellent. It was my sister's and my last evening in Cinque Terre--we were pretty pooped--so we settled for an outdoor spot at Veciu Muin for an early(ish) Sunday dinner. For drinks I went with a couple glasses of Prosecco... when in Italy right? They have a deal if you order two, so I couldn't say no to that. My sister and I split a refreshing Greek salad, which I would recommend. It was the sans lettuce variety. Tomato, bell pepper, cucumber, red onion, and olives. We omitted the feta to make it vegan. You pour your own balsamic and olive oil on top. For our main dish we decided to split the vegetarian pizza, without cheese again. We added basil for another flavor component. A per usual in Italy the toppings were very sparse. Hot take, Seattle pizza is way better ha. Any who, it wasn't bad at all, just a little lacking, not due to the absence of cheese so don't go there lol. I drizzled a little olive oil on top of mine which helped a bit. The menu seems to cater to picky people and children, so I suppose if your kid wants french fries and cheese pizza this place would be a good option. They also serve more American style, trying to turn over tables quicker instead of being more hands-off. I would have preferred to sit a bit longer and enjoy the early evening. Overall, I'd say stop by if you're traveling with kids and need something simple and quick for dinner. Otherwise, perhaps try elsewhere. read more

We came here after a grueling day of hiking and it totally hit the spot! I was a bit worried it would be expensive and touristy, but it turned out to be delicious and fairly priced! We ordered the swordfish dish, anchovie appetizer, and pesto pasta, and everything was very tasty, especially the anchovies. This place is low key a tourist trap but there aren't too many choices in Cinque Terre this time of year that are open especially on a weekday. They even put tap water into refillable bottles and then just shove a plastic cap on and call it still naturale to charge €2.50 (that's probably the worst part of coming here). Service: Lacking but the male server was much better than then female waitress who really didn't care what-so-ever and basically dropped our pizza on the table . Eeep. Sorry? I guess. Eats: Tuna Salad 3/5 Decently fresh lettuce, canned corn, canned tuna, fresh tomatoes, olives with seeds, strips of carrot. Riomaggiore Pizza 4/5 Crisp crust, good flavor! Decent toppings and cane out piping hot. Pretty spicy as well. Spaghetti with local mussels 5/5 This was delicious! I was really surprised and the ratio of mussels to pasta was amazing. Small touristy restaurant with outside eating. I had the set fish lunch menu, and wasn't all that impressed. Food tasted bland, and the olive oil that was on the table was expired. I love eating outside enjoying the weather, and people watching, but the flies we're a little too much and annoying trying to keep them from landing on our food, but that is a chance you take eating outside. I had a glass of their house wine which was just ok. I'd skip it and buy something you know you like. read more

Meandering through town looking for lunch, we liked the covered seating right on the Main Street. We ordered the mussels for an appetizer. It was tasty but a bit salty, which was easily fixed by using the bread (very good) to offset it. We had the swordfish (excellent) and the seafood spaghetti (excellent as well) for lunch. The portions were kind of small for us, but we eat a lot. :) the flavors of both these dishes left us wanting about 3 times more, but I guess that left room for gelato later on. Overall this was a nice find. The service was very good and the meal was 39.50 for two. Note - no credit cards here so bring cash. read more

This was one of the few places in Riomaggiore that had a full Italian style menu - Antipasti to Dolci. I had the gnocchi in Gorgonzola and it was amazing. The gnocchi were like little little pillows and delicious. My husband had the swordfish and it was also very, very good. To finish, we had the profiteroles with chocolate and it was the best desert we have had in Italy. The bread was the best bread we had in Italy. Soft and salted - it was delicious. We had a lovely chat with the server and it turns out his wife is from Chicago! He was very friendly and even ended our meal with Limoncello on the house! We loved this place. We were really hungry and wanted to grab something asap that was nearby before our adventure for the day, so we randomly came across this restaurant. We got seated downstairs because upstairs was full. The place was FILTHY. There was dust and dirt next to the stairs and right by our tables with dead flies all over it... We had the 3 pasta trio platter which none was good but disgustingly salty especially the pesto one. The pizza was like the crappy $1 pizza that you can get at a run down pizzeria in NYC. Every single dish we had tasted and even looked so awful that I didn't even bother taking a single picture of any of them... Even though I always snap all of my food pics... This place is terrible. Americans can equate it to hamburger helper or stauffers. The ambiance and service are ok but the food is store bought or frozen. Nothing is homemade or fresh. Avoid the gnocchi and the lasagne. The pizza and calzone looked like they might be decent. read more

Went here on our last night in the Cinque Terra. We had blown our wad on Miky's the night before in Monterossa so needed to find something a bit more reasonably priced. Veciu Muin caught our eye at the top of the main street. We sat outside and the food was quite good, but the wait staff was really great. Very chatty and eager to talk and give advice around the area. And my husband thought the pesto was the best he had on the coast! read more
