The vault is beautiful! Great decor! There is a large vault due to the fact that the building use to house a bank. I love the old brick and comfortable feeling inside the restaurant. I went there for brunch with my family on a Sunday afternoon and it wasn't packed. The lemonade I had had way to much lime in it. The curly fries were great! The waffle was a little to crunchy for my taste and the strawberries that were on top wasn't that fresh but the bananas were nice. The chicken apple sausage was to sweet for me so I didn't eat it. But great portions of everything. I think you need to have a specific taste for that place. No my favorite brunch but it got the job done that day. read more

The food photos on Yelp look way more appealing than in person. I came here because that's what popped up on the Yelp map as a decent breakfast place so I decided to try it out. I ordered 2 eggs any style with turkey sausage and fruit and left pretty disappointed. I ate some of my egg and 1 of 3 turkey patties because it was just too spicy. The fruit was not fresh and I only ate the orange and whatever else looked like it was still fresh. So basically I paid $8.20 for a half eaten breakfast and this experience has made up my mind to not come again. A go-to place that is convenient, group- and kid-friendly, and provides solid meal options at a reasonable price, and service with a smile. It's basically a huge plate of sautéed tofu (not scrambled) with veggies, onion, and garlic, a combo that never fails. It comes with bread and your choice of a side. I got the homefries. Today is the second time I've experenced the Vault and my opinion hasn't changed much. It's ok, but there's better. The service was ok and the food was plenty but well.. simply "ok". I've had much better "cinnamon french toast" before, that for example tastes like cinnamon. my boyfriend had "eggs benedict" which were great. The fruit plate was a mix of big chunks of a cantaloupe-melon, strawberries and an orange. For simply "eating food" it's ok, but I think the guys in the kitchen need more motivation. I've been here twice and both times it was almost empty; I think it's a hidden breakfast/brunch gem. The food isn't *amazing*, but it's decent and the portions are very large compared to most places in the Bay. You will save $5 or more for the average meal, which is nice. We were approached right away by our waitress who took our drink order; two coffees. Ordered: Two eggs, hashbrowns and bacon Eggs Benedict Presentation: Presented on clean plates, and garnished with fresh fruit, food was not sloppy. I was so excited to eat! Taste: Eggs Benedict- at first I was a little disappointed to see so much of the eggs drenched with hollandaise sauce. But I dove in ... First bite I spite out all over the table I was so embarrassed our waitress had seen the whole thing and came over right away. Right away all I could think about was "what is that TASTE ! Horrible ! Disgusting ! I had my date take a taste for a second opinion, he agreed something was not right. We came to a conclusion of what resulted in the bitter, greasy, metal taste. The cook HAD NOT cleaned off the grill properly before cooking my dish. The lemon was over powering, TIP: start off with 1-2 tablespoons of lemon juice or warn your customers of the lemon I took a second bite just to make sure my taste buds were not messing with me. It took a lot for me to force myself to swallow. In the end I had to tell her to take it back. While I waited patiently for my oder of French toast to arrive a man appeared at our table, he did not introduce himself ( assuming he is the owner/manager ) he stood far off from us and basically told us nothing is wrong with his sauce that it was made fresh this morning! I bluntly told him that I didn't like it, that something did not taste right. He was so offended he began to speak even louder as to bring all eyes to our table for disgracing his hollandaise sauce. I was speechless, just stared at him blankly. He continued to go on to say that the eggs Benedict is his number one seller and will be sold out by the end of the day. Blah blah After all was said and done, I appreciate our waitress for doing her job well and keeping it professional. A couple of hours later lets just say I had some serious tummy problems. Had to downgrade to 1 star. I'm pretty sure I got food poisoning here (probably from the eggs or egg batter in the french toast) because later that evening I had all the signs: stomach cramps, nausea, pressure on my bowels, headache, fever, chills, and body aches. It was a mild case (no explosive vomiting) but I still felt like crap. I know it wasn' t a cold because I didn't have any nasal congestion; and plus I've had food poisoning before and know what it feels like. Everything disappeared after 48 hours. This was my first meal of the day here, and the only other thing I had eaten that day later that evening was sushi. But the thing was that me and my honey split our sushi entrees together and I was the only one who got sick, so I know it wasn't the sushi. I dont know if they got a batch of bad eggs from their supplier or if it was improperly handled at the restaurant. Still though, after this incident not sure if I want to come back now. read more

This is my favorite weekend brunch spot. The menu is full of delicious breakfast and lunch items. The croissant french toast is a favorite of mine, and the omelette and pancake breakfasts will hook you up for a lot of food for not that much cash. Watch out for the cinnamon french toast, though - it's huge. Several different varieties of coffee-related drinks are available, too, including a delicious mocha. The service is usually pretty friendly. It's easy to come here with a group of people (think 6+) and get seated relatively easily. The only downside to the Vault is that they aren't open past 3 - so don't come expecting dinner! read more

You have the breakfast menu on the left and sandwiches, burgers, salads, and pastas on the right. I wasn't sure what to get so I asked my server. She recommended either the chicken breast sandwich or turkey. I decided to go with turkey and added a house salad. The house salad was a romaine lettuce with fresh julienne carrot sticks, olives, sliced red onion, red tomato with Italian dressing. I wasn't sure if the dressing was homemade or not.. My next course was turkey sandwich with potato salad. The turkey sandwich was sizable, had melted white cheese, grilled onions, sliced turkey, with lettuce, tomato, and red onion on the side. One thing I really enjoyed was the bun. The bun was buttered, grilled, charred and had a nice crunch. It complimented with all the other ingredients and tasted great!. The Vault has been a neighborhood go to place for years. The owners opened when no other restaurants were willing. They gave the neighborhood a place to sit and eat, study, have meetings, enjoy family & friends with really good variety and tasty, nutritious food and good service. However, it recently changed ownership. There was an immediate and noticeable change in the quality and presentation of the food. It is still open to the neighborhood walk ins, but the atmosphere, service and food has clearly changed. I hope we can see the new ownership team step up and raise their performance and food standards. After more than seven attempts to eat in and do take out orders, currently a 1.5 star rating. This was a favorite of my ladyfriend, and conveniently located in her neighborhood, so I have eaten here on many occasions. She was a regular and recognized by the staff, and I felt like everyone was extra nice and friendly because of it and I generally found the service to be good. During busy times, like brunch, I personally would not venture in. I got a late invitation to join a brunch and they'd already ordered by the time I got there. They were slammin' busy and the servers were flying around like crazy. I don't expect super attentive service under those conditions, but, like, we did not see our server for ages. It took forever for the server to arrive to take my drink order and I decided not to order food because I saw how long I would have to wait for it. The waitress was very nice and I totally sympathized, no biggie. Just.. I won't go back during a busy brunch. :) My ladyfriend and I would often go on weekdays, when it was quieter. Breakfast Review Only! This place can bang out the waffles, I tell you. Today was my second venture to The Vault and I left feeling full of the warm and fuzzies yet again. I had the eggs with onions, tomatoes, and mushrooms. Served with homefries and sourdough toast. YUM. Girlfriend had the waffle special with whipped cream and strawberries. BOMB. Only suggestion would be that the homefries were cut a bit smaller so the potatoes could cook throughout. Maybe served with more? :) Still really yummy, though. Waitstaff is really nice, although sometimes it seems a little slow when you first get there. I think this is because it's a seat-yourself kind of place and occasionally they don't see you sit down right away. Chairs are super comfy, but sit kind of low (which isn't always good for the vertically challenged...like myself) but still comfy, non-the-less. We have our regular table. The worst ham and eggs I've ever seen, the ham was so thin it looked like the ham you use to put on sandwiches and just popped it in a pan and cooked it for a couple of seconds. She brought me the garlic cream which I didn't want and she then decided to argue with me saying I ordered that and it wasn't her fault. It then took a couple of minutes of arguing for her to take back the plate and offer me a solution. At this point I'm annoyed so I told her not to put another order in I asked her to take my boyfriends food as well and if she can just charge us for the drinks ( we didn't even touch). When my boyfriend and I were walking out the restaurant she ran after us because we didn't give her enough money (30!! For drinks?!) I then looked on the receipt and saw she still was trying to charge us for the food we didn't eat! I gave her money for the two drinks and she started to yell at me. This morning I ordered a fruit smoothie, stack of pancakes and egg florentine. The Hollandaise sauce is very delicious indeed, a bit on the sour side, I like the deep of flavors. The fruit smoothie is a good deal. Fresh fruits blended together for only $2.95. It beats the coffee latte option. The space is bright and airy. There is a bank vault where you can open and take your kids into and put them in there safely while you can have a quiet meal :) Space is easily can host a big party. I went in on Christians Eve, enjoyed breakfast with my friend (service was slow). My major concern was the fact that a customer came in to order breakfast the waiter took their order and asked the customer to wait outside. It was cold and I asked the customer if he wanted to wait outside he let me know he was asked to wait for his food and not sit on the outside tables. The customer was homeless but was a paying customer. I inquired with the waiter when I paid the bill and he said that no customers complained but customer in question smelled and he wanted him gone. I understand that restaurant are entitled to refuse service, but if you take someone's money they are a paying customer and I can not patron a restaurant that disrespect a customer. read more

While out and about in Berkeley my friend suggested that we eat a late breakfast at The Vault. As another reviewer wrote the place was empty so we had a choice of seating. The food arrived rather quickly. However, I was underwhelmed by it. Although the portions were hardy, it was not seasoned and lacked taste. I don't typically add salt to my food but I needed to this time. But what caused me to write this review was two unpleasant experiences. As we sat talking and finished with our meal, an older woman appeared at our table and asked if she could have what was left. It was obvious she was desperate for food by her bold move. Before we could respond to her request, She was shooed out by the employees like she was some kind of insect. How about letting her sit at one of the many empty tables and eat a meal? My friend and I already decided we would package our leftovers and give them to her outside. The second disturbing incident was from the rudeness I experienced by management. Toward the end of our meal an older gentleman walked over to give us our ticket. I asked him to bring us boxes. He ignored me and continued examining something on our table. I repeated myself and gestured I needed a box. He then snapped I know what a box is. I was shocked by his response and replied You didn't acknowledge my comment so I didn't know if you heard me. He then snarked I acknowledge you. The lack of compassion they demonstrated towards the woman and the rudeness of the owner is egregious. I ordered a breakfast meal for a coworker's birthday. Two scrambled eggs n bacon w home fries which they said was good. I ordered the pastrami sandwich for myself to go. It was a big disappointment and for the $12.00 it cost, I felt completely ripped off. My sandwich consisted of two slices of pastrami w cheese in between, covered with two slices of greasy rye bread. I can't stand this place. I've tried, I've really tried. I want to support my local businesses but I just can't get behind this one AT ALL. Every time I have gone, there has been a problem. Here's a few: Waited forever for my breakfast to have it arrive with a hair in it that was suspiciously pube-like (is that a word?). I look over to the kitchen and there's the chef with his chest in all its hirsute glory popping out of his shirt which seemed to be unbuttoned far enough to be considered a code violation. ICK! I told my waitress (the aloof and condescending owner lady) that she was welcome to eat it for free if she wanted and left. Two years later, I figured it was long enough to give them another try. The waitress that time took off for a break at the end of our meal before closing us out. I could see her outside on her cell phone smoking a cigarette while we were waiting for our bill and drinks (still). Uh, excuse me? WTF? I had to hunt down another waitress to get my drinks and my bill. The food that time wasn't very good, either. I used to work on Adeline just a block away from the Vault. A co-worker went to lunch there one time and didn't tip as he was new to this country and from one where tipping is considered rude...he was still learning our cultural idiosyncrasies . WELL, his waitress had the nerve to COME TO OUR OFFICE and confront him for not tipping her. He was totally confused and didn't know what he did wrong. I just about dragged that tacky thing out by her hair and told her never to step foot in our business again. I was shocked that she had the nerve to do that. Geez...there are so many other horrible experiences I have had with that place. I've lived on the same block as this restaurant since 1995. I REALLY wish it were great and I could be a regular, but it isn't, But hey, if you like crappy service, hairy so-so food, very few options (especially if your veg/an), and being chased down if you forget to tip, this is your place! LOL he said bc the tables we put together were in between 2 sections and they had to identify which server was going to cover. UM OK CHILL. Obviously, your servers already figured it out bc one of them came by and took our drink orders already. You didn't have to be so rude about it. Some people just do not know how to communicate properly and professionally. If you have an issue with where your COSTUMERS sit, EXPLAIN it like an adult, don't cry about it.. WHATEVER, so we got up AGAIN to sit at the tables he wanted us to sit at. NO BIG DEAL, we shook it off. Food is mediocre, nothing special about their brunch, its just like any other brunch spot. Its good though forsure, not the best. I had their french toast with strawberries and banana. The bread wasn't all that great. They probably put too much egg bc it was on the wetter side.
