Went here for a quick lunch a couple days ago and had the most flavorless chicken souvlaki pita I've experienced in all of Buffalo. It was like they didn't even TRY to season the meat. The fries were off as well - they tasted like they'd been fried in old grease. I picked out the meat and ate the pita and lettuce by itself. I ordered 'for here' and it was called out as 'to go' (and put into a plastic baggy). It only irritated me because when I was ordering it seemed like they weren't listening to me and had better things to do - so I knew as they were calling it out that they had, indeed, not payed attention to the fact that I told them we were eating inside. C'mon. Three stars because my other half had a gyro special with greek potatoes and said it was delicious. I thought the greek potatoes were ungodly sour, but he said he didn't mind it. I was excited to find a Greek place nearby when I moved to the Elmwood area. I was even more excited to find out that this place was opened until so late as I am guilty of being a night scavenger eater. I would say this is a good place to go to if you have an undying craving for gyros or any other Greek-inspired foods that they offer. It does a decent job at satisfying that craving at least for a little. I usually get the lamb gyro, it isn't terribly good food, but for the price, I would say it's not bad as an option. We go here quite a bit for take out. Good option for food to take over to Bidwell and listen to the music in the summer. It has a decent variety and relatively good variety. They are also quite fast. I have an assortment of gripes though. It seems like they often get something wrong with my order or leave something out. It is rare that they seem to remember the tzatziki with my gyro for example and often my salad "without onions" is pretty darn oniony. Also wish they were a little less stingy with olives and cucumbers in the salads. Each salad comes with one olive and two cucumbers (never any deviation from that standard). I guess only sad because my daughters love olives so much. But is easy and close and these small things are not enough to keep us from returning frequently. read more

yup, its another greek joint on/near the elmwood village...but you know what? its definitely acceptable fare for a quick bite or a late night snack. AND, i'll patronize this place over their eeee-vil greek compatriots across the street at the preservation-hating Pano's anytime... stopped in for a light night snack with the man, and we were both pleasantly pleased to find both our wraps to be fresh, aptly prepared, and delicious. man had the chicken souvlaki wrap, and i enjoyed the chicken finger mega wrap (well, half of it...while not what i consider to be 'MEGA', this wrap is definitely generously sized). the pita was warm and yummy, as if they had been freshly made; the greens were actually mixed greens (yay!) rather than just romaine hearts; and the chicken in both items was cooked with some skill -- not flavorless or greasy, and there was a ton of it to boot. we also grabbed some baklava and found it to be scrumptious -- flaky, sweet, and full of that delicious nutty filling. it tasted as though it had been freshly made, and for a baklava aficionado such as myself, i was happy to enjoy the fruits of someone's labor. vasilis express doesn't try to be something its not. it is what it is, and it recognizes it. on each of the times i have patronized vasilis express, i have been met with fresh, well prepared food at a decent price point. its not five star dining by any means, but the patio is definitely quaint and charming when its not brimming with drunken college kids, and the interior isn't bad either (meaning, its clean and there are a few reasonably comfortable tables to consume your fare). oh, and on one last note, i found the young staff working last night to be courteous and on top of their game. the kid on the grill cooked up some good chicken, and the girls at the counter were attentive -- and this was the wee hours of sunday morning. so color me just a bit impressed... read more

We were really craving Greek food and needed to grab something quick. My boyfriend and I ordered--I ordered the chicken wrap, and he pointed at a poster with a picture of a chicken wrap with fries that advertised "gyro" in words below the picture. They delivered a shoe-leather lamb gyro to him. When he took the wrap up to the counter to explain that it was wrong, the guy at the counter said "you pointed at gyro so that's what was delivered." I really have always loved the food although tonight they were out of Baklava which was fine... the young woman behind the counter (bull ring type nose piercing, midriff showing) made me feel like the biggest piece of shit for even coming in and ordering. It was early like 9pm I wasnt drunk or rude. Incredibly condescending and forgot part of my order and when I came back for it no apology was offered or anything ... I got take out homemade rice pudding and baklava. I have never tried baklava before and I don't care to ever again, not for me. The rice pudding I ate lying in bed on NYE at 9pm cuz old. The rice pudding was perfect! I think I'll hold the cinnamon on top next time but the texture was right on target. I'm all about the textures! This is an 'it is what it is' kind of place, best if you want something greasy and easy, you're drunk, it's super late at night, or some combination of those things. It's really close to where I live, so I come here more often than I'd like to. They've got a really big menu, so whatever you're into, you can probably find something you'll like here. It's supposedly a Greek joint (they have gyro and falafel), but it's more like these items are just available rather than a specialty. They've got a pretty standard breakfast menu, a variety of poutine, burgers, sandwiches, etc. Everything I've ever ordered here has been exactly what it advertised, filling and hot. I feel guilty for my previous post as my first experience was less than impressive. Turns out, a Greek salad is not the way to go but that there are other delicious options on the menu such as the chicken souvlaki wrap. Over the last two months this has become my go to place to grab a bite when I get out of work late and no other place is open for a decent, debatably healthy meal. They are open until 5 am on the weekends which is straight absurdity. I usually go with the chicken souvlaki wrap which comes with lettuce, onion, tomato, yogurt sauce and chicken on a wrap. The hummus is still pretty standard, but at 1 am when you are getting off a 9 hour serving shift, this hummus is the best thing in the world. Still no whole wheat pita though. Their yogurt sauce is tasty too but they charge extra for it and it's a very small quantity. Lately, due to the fact that they do not offer whole wheat wraps or pita, I have been going with a side of souvlaki chicken and a side of hummus. This only totals $7 and the chicken is insanely flavorful. It's the perfect late night, satisfying meal that doesn't leave you wishing you hadn't indulged when you wake up in the morning. From my experience, the workers behind the counter have always been kind and my order is always waiting for me when I get there. Although this place is open late, it isn't swarming with drunk kids at night which is also a plus. read more

It's OK to change the food...just change the menu accordingly, so loyal customers that have become accustomed to the way things were are aware of the change. I have driven by this place dozens of times and never noticed it. My friend suggested it and, being down to try anything, I said what the hell. Omg! Best effing Falafel wrap in Buffalo. Today I came into Vasilis Express for french fries, and came out being screamed at by the man who seems to be the owner (his name was Vasilis). Because I happen to be a young woman treating the cashier with decency and respect, he apparently mistook me for somebody else involved in a conflict with another cashier (? I honestly have no idea) and began to lobby abuses at me, telling me to "get the f**** out", and to "never step foot in [his] restaurant again"... Not a problem. I'm obviously never coming back. I left the restaurant utterly bewildered, shocked, and appalled. Who do you file a complaint with when the owner of the establishment is to blame? The Better Business Bureau? Given their three locations, this place is quite convenient for on-the-go Greek. Calling ahead makes the pick up a little easier but if you have 10 min to spare, authentic Greek food awaits you. Vasilis is pretty average as far as greek takeout goes, there are some definite winners like the spicy feta chicken wrap and the greek poutine fries but lately their food as been hit or miss - they seem to be changing up their suppliers and your food might be good or it might be a soggy mess. They also commit one of the great sins of customer service: not updating their prices on their website. If you call in an order based on their official website you will be charged a lot more than you are expecting. read more

Always have loved the food here but the customer service is out of hand. I call two hours before they say they close and the most unpleasant women I've ever talked to is giving me attitude for ordering a souvlaki dinner saying we only do fryer food at this time.. it's 2 hours before they close! So I say aren't you guys open til 2:30am and she say "yeah it says that but not tonight, fryer only". So I said you can't just make a souvlaki dinner it's literally mostly salad and chicken and fries... she rudely says "No! Fryer only". I then proceed to hang up for getting verbally assaulted and pissed for asking for something I should have no problem ordering when they advertise they are open. This place has gotten worse and worse over the years. Horrible customer service including the owners daughter who loves to announce "my parents own this good luck complaining ". It's a shame because they have great food. Just a matter of time that the god awful service catches up with all they're loyal customers and they lose their base. Unfortunately this time and the time prior to this when we ordered the fries were soggy and both meals lacked flavor. I do not know if the owner changed but the food is not nearly as good as it use to be and the prices have gone up as well. The fact that the quality of the foods decreased drastically and the price of it went up is completely outrageous. I don't know why they no longer carry pork products, but because of this they took the little piggy poutine and a few other very delicious items off the menu. I've probably come here maybe a couple times in a couple years, clearly never wowed to the point of returning regularly but it's good once in a while for me. The falafel 's seem like they were prefrozen and de thawed-so in that sense it really is like fast food when they say "express". Will give props to their fish fry, it is huge, delicious, and comes with generous portions of cole slaw, macaroni salad and some yummy fries-I like their fries ;). I got the veggie burger there for the first time and I just figured by ordering it with "everything" on it would mean the usual at least of I.e. ketchup, etc. but this was not true. It came with no condiments-just a dry burger with lettuce and tomato. I've had the gyro dinner which is a good value for the price - enough food for 2 meals! I've been there four times now, for takeout, and it still seems redundant (yet more Greek on Elmwood?) as well as disorganized. The cashier/order takers and the cooks dont seem to be too in-synch. And the fries............not too good in my fry loving opinion. Coated with some unidentifiable rough textured coating and kind of greasy. Three out of the four times, I found something missing from my order after I got home. When I mentioned it a following time, the young cashier looked at me for a second like I'd just asked to borrow money, and returned to her conversation with a family having dinner. I didn't pursue it further. I was hoping for an nearer alternative to Towne takeout, (also notorious for leaving stuff out of your order, but nice about it when you go back) but this isn't it. read more
