I love visiting the everyday stores here. They are all multi-tasking and it's great. This is the town grocer but don't think there is only food and drink in here! I spent way too much at the greeting cards section. They also have shoes, sunglasses, Vashon Island baseball caps and totes...Food-wise, a decent gluten-free/vegan section, and of course, many other offerings. Do yourself a favor and get the gelato from the Vashon Thriftway's gelato counter!! The texture is perfection and flavors are INCREDIBLE. We got a small split scoop of crème brûlée & pumpkin and a small split scoop of chocolate chip and pumpkin all the flavors were 10/10 but RUN DON'T WALK to get the pumpkin gelato from Vashon Thriftway while they still have it, it tastes like the best parts of a pumpkin pie! We were having a craving for ice cream on island and went to a few ice cream shops and were not impressed with what the island had to offer (2 businesses selling heavily freezer burned overpriced ice cream). Also the customer service we received from other establishments was very shocking. A lot of unfriendly teens. We had given up on the idea of an ice cream type treat and went to Thriftway to get groceries for our stay and were excited to see they had a gelato counter. The young person named Cass (hope I am spelling their name correctly) was INCREDIBLY sweet just a lovely person and great employee. Cass is the one who encouraged us to try the pumpkin flavor and we are so glad that they did. Thank you Cass and Thriftway for adding sweetness to an already perfect day! read more

Been shopping here because there is such a dearth of grocery stores on Vashon. No more, for what I pay for a ferry ride I can shop at PCC where the produce isn't second or third rate and moldy. The prices aren't two dollars more for bread (if they even have it!), fish isn't old and cut by some misogynistic guy, and the last rolls of toilet paper aren't supplied by the Kochs. read more

Stopped in here for a mid-afternoon snack. The place was hopping and the deli (huge) working like a finely tuned Italian sports car. It reminds of what While Foods probably started as, before they grew so big & commercialized. Enough oF that, all to say a great deli with nicely proved made to order sandwiches, burritos & more. a good selection of French & Italian cheeses - not the highlight commercialized packages found in chains. Wonderful food store for our small island. Well run and focused on customer needs. Shopped there for 40 years. A recent change in the software is pushing me to the IGA. Their new software requires scanning my drivers license to purchase wine. IGA and the liquor store do not, and state they will not, scan purchaser's Drivers license. There is no legal requirement to scan. Their issue is stated as liability if they mistakenly sell to a minor. Just raise the age appearance to 30. I am 77 and need to prove I am a minor?! read more

The workers at thriftway are not only unkept, but are rude and three of the four people that were asked where a certain product was, just said "I don't know " it wasn't until the fourth person overheard and told the kid to "look on the sheet " I understand that customer service and friendliness has gone severely down hill because of Covid, but they should remember that with out happy customers, there is no store. read more

For a grocery store on Vashon Island, Vashon Thriftway is quite comprehensive. Like many other businesses on the island, they seem to offer more than just one thing. Here you will groceries, but also a deli, coffee stand and products like rain boots. Though the island is only accessible by water, the prices are comparable with what you would find in Seattle. The store is similar to the Town & Country Market on Bainbridge Island in what is offered. Stepped into the store to pick a cold drink as I was attending the Vashon Strawberry Festival this weekend which is full of overpriced fair food. It was quite busy with shoppers as it seems to be the preferred grocery store on the island over the IGA down the street. Vashon Thriftway is a good supermarket that suits the needs of island residents and visitors alike. read more

This is an upscale grocery store on Vashon Island. The store is pretty large and has a very nice variety of products. They have delicious looking artisan products in the bakery as well as gluten free options. They have a station where you can have a burrito custom made or get cooked meat. There is an olive bar and lots of goodies in bulk. You can buy soaps and detergents in bulk too. Higher end brands and ingredients, at the price you would expect. Friendly staff and the employees were EVERYWHERE. If you need help finding something, there's always someone handy to ask. My cashier was enthusiastic and upbeat. I enjoyed shopping here. read more

The definitive market on Vashon Island, although IGA market nearby offers all the basics and a few unique items (like these things I call "super-muffins" for $1 each in their bakery section - pure temptation that I enjoy frequently). I have certainly seen larger and more extravagant markets in this modern era of Trader Joes, Whole Foods, etc., but you have to remember that this is a small island community. So, here are a few of the many things that I think sets Thriftway apart out here: * A huge and superb selection of regular and organic produce in the middle of the store. From bananas to berries, most things I have purchased there are excellent. * An impressive variety of products, including several for folks with special diets like vegans, vegetarians, no dairy, and such. I was really impressed to find lots of choices for rice-based cheese and ice cream, vegan sour cream/cream cheese, almond milk, and many other things among the staples. * A wall that extended through half the store devoted purely to bulk items like nuts, trail mix, dried fruit, candy, etc. * An aisle behind the deli devoted just to fresh meats, including a large station for seafood. It is refreshing to walk into a market and see about 10 kinds of fish, all in large portions and packaged that same day. We just had some sockeye salmon last night, which was rich and tender. * A robust deli with all the basics and daily specials. I am particularly fond of the rotisserie chickens (regular and free-range) available daily and, on occasion, a fantastic turkey pot roast. * A healthy bakery section with lots of fresh, high-end bread loaves separate from the regular stuff. Among these are a half-dozen from the Macrina Bakery in Seattle, which I am fond of. My personal favorite is the "Pan Giuseppe" (biga/unbleached flour), which makes for an exquisite sandwich when toasted. * A special counter for those rare, but important services like getting passport photos, money orders, lottery tickets, etc. I have used them all and always been satisfied. * A large number of friendly employees throughout the store, who will stop and help you with anything you need whether it is finding products, picking out a fresh melon, ringing you up or carrying your stuff out to the car. True, most markets do some version of this and you may not always get what you're looking for, but the folks at Thriftway are always eager to offer and never look perturbed at the customer's request. * I rarely drink, but I admit that their wine selection, located in the middle of the store next to the produce, is on par in size and variety with what you would find at Trader Joe's. * A variety of extras at the front entrance like a large flower display, a Cafe Umbria that includes a gelato case, and a Redbox rental machine. * A relaxed and agreeable attitude about customer service. Case-in-point: Last month, the family called in to report that a bag of roma tomatoes was missing from our massive grocery haul and we had lost the receipt. After unsuccessfully checking the register for the lost item, there was no argument and we were invited to stop by at our convenience, get a new bag of tomatoes, and ask for a specific person by name at the special station mentioned above, who waved us through and wished us a nice day. The florist at Thriftway did the flowers for my wedding, and I couldn't be happier with how they turned out. The manager was wonderful to work with, helping me select flowers that were in season, worked with my chosen color palette, and stayed within my budget. I don't usually review grocery stores, but I had to make an exception for this one, because their customer service was wonderful (especially in the Deli section)! I went inside for a sandwich and got a sample of their freshly baked cordon bleu nuggets with bacon inside. It was delicious!!! I would come back just for that! Anyhow, the sandwich was delicious - tomato, avocado, two type of mayos (spicy and avocado), turkey, and lettuce. It was so fresh and satisfying. They were not skimpy on the meat! :) The store, itself, was very nice and upscale. However, the reason for my return next will to try out all the other goodies at that gourmet Deli of theirs. read more

Somehow they always manage to have what I'm looking for. Staff is great and clearly devoted to making sure you get everything you need. People complain that it's pricey, but it's not more expensive than similar stores. The worst part are the other customers that you have to navigate around. Vashon people are not known for their consideration of others and that manifests there when they block the aisles, cut in line at the deli, create problems at the register, generally behave badly. They consider it a social scene and will prevent you from being able to move around the store by blocking the aisles with their chat groups and ignoring the fact that other customers are piling up in line behind them at the checkout while they chatter with the checkout person. My only complaint about the store itself is that the owner makes the effort to drive out surrounding small businesses by offering the same things they do at a discounted price. read more

I can speak first hand about how Thriftway bends over backwards to take care of the customers even when the customers can be rude and pretentious (trust me, I've seen plenty of it here). Department managers will order special items that they make no margin on to please a single customer. The organic and health food selection is incredible and mixed right in with your every day items. Also, having a courtesy clerk bag your groceries and walk you to your car is standard instead of making you feel like you are bothering them. Granted, much of this is because it's a small community. While Thriftway probably isn't the cheapest grocery store on the planet, it is still affordable. And you don't really live on Vashon Island and expect a cheap local store. To live on Vashon requires a large chunk of income before food. Department wise, the perishable foods departments are all amazing and I can tell you they are competitively priced with comparable stores on the mainland. There are tons of options for milk, eggs, salsa, cheese, frozen foods, etc. And the manager of these departments is a great guy who will do whatever he can to get you what you need. The meat and fish department is also great. They always have the freshest, highest quality stuff. And the guys that run the department are awesome too. Basically, you can't go wrong at this store. I remember when it was a small, old looking operation and since then there have been several expansions and remodels and now it is a first class store that could rival just about anybody. I honest to God wish I had this store in my neighborhood in San Francisco. Our Safeways suck. read more

When you think of a grocery store you don't often think of a business that also supports it's local community. Sure they allow posters to be put up in their windows and girl scouts to peddle their cookies outside their doors but do you really see any true hints of community involvement? Here you do. When Washington State privatized the liquor industry Thriftway made the community oriented decision to not sell Liquor and left the sales to the already operating Liquor store on island allowing that business to stay open with no competition. They also sell many local and on island made products from all natural goat milk soaps to tofu. I applaud such actions. I would also like to point out their huge bulk food section, their produce section which is painstakingly labeled with where the produce has been shipped in from, an AMAZING DELI with daily lunch and dinner specials and friendly cashiers who remember their customers by name. read more

This Thriftway is probably one of the greatest grocery stores I've ever been to. Every time I walk in, I silently ooh and ahh to myself over how amazingly fantastic it is. And it's just a grocery store, for goodness sakes. The employees are super friendly and will always let you know what produce tastes best, what the current sales are, and offer up advise on any product. The produce is fresh, their organic section is huge, their bakery is filled with all kinds of delicious goodies, and their aisle of bulk foods is the greatest thing I have ever seen in my life. There are two groceries on Vashon - one upscale, one not. This is the one with imported cheeses and wines, an extensive meat and seafood selection, organic this and that, and hemp cereal. Hemp...cereal. You can get Mexican Coke. You can get get a burrito punch card at the deli. You can get produce grown on the Island - some of it is edible (there was an awful lot of clover in the Island-grown salad mix). Surprisingly, for most items the price difference between Thriftway and IGA is not substantial. read more

Love this place. I can't rightly say how much. Now the hordes of people during the after school/work and week end hours could work on their manners. Also our car has gotten most of it's dings from this parking lot. Because of...those people. But is there any other place on Vashon I can get Israeli couscous? I don't think so. Is there any other place I can get a sandwich platter ( if I call a day ahead) and a swarm of balloons? No,there is not. People complain that prices are high, but they gotta get it all on the island, and that costs money. I don't think the prices are all that high. I got the hardest, driest, most pucklike burger I have ever had the misfortune of eating here. I had to ask them to take it off the grill after it had been cooking there for 20 minutes. The gentrification of the island is reflected in the expansion and evolution of Thriftway. This grocery store is very representational of contemporary island culture: 8 billion kinds of cheese, rubber boots, and Audis parked next to old Volvos in the parking lot. Ok, when I was a kid, this was just a plain old grocery store. Now, the only thing not on steroids in the place is the meat. This is the ultimate gourmet grocery store, with a HUGE selection of organic produce (lots of it local), free range meats, a gourmet deli, big and varied wine selection, fresh takeout Chinese and even an olive bar for crying out loud. They've even gone hi-tech too, with self checkout lanes for those in a hurry. I may have to move back to the rock just to get my groceries here. read more

Real nice upscale store, the IGA is at the other end of the spectrum. On our trips to the island we stop here to pick up our lunch at the deli. The deli is first class with hot and cold sandwiches. My favorite thing is to get the cioppino from the soup counter. It's made in-house and has an unbelievable amount of fish and shrimp in a delicious tomatoe base. This and a sour dough baguette and a picnic table at the Dockton community park on a sunny day (heck, even an overcast day), and you're in heaven. read more

no salad bar. deli tabbouleh is made with couscous. pre-packaged salads are manipulatively mostly greens. i have bought bad seafood twice. soups are very predictable with no rotation. things get packed up at 8 and store closes at 9. great assortment of bulk foods which have an above-average turnover on the island. things can be bought in bulk with a discount. everyone is really friendly. very alluring lunch/dinner specials. a lot of local/regional products, included bread and cheeses. yankee candle section. read more

I usually like this place when I come to Vashon, but sorry to say I had THE worst veggie burger I've ever had there today. Soggy and uncooked and bun too small for the burger. Just awful, fell apart all over my car. And at 5.99, it was a might overpriced,didn't even come with chips or fries, etc. The person behind the counter literally spoke so softly that I had to ask him to repeat himself every time he said something. It's so annoying when people do that! Speak up for God's sake, you are in the service industry! Anyway disappointing experience! read more

Brought 8 piece fried chicken in their deli at 6pm for dinner. Was totally inedible!! So disgustingly dry and old inside! I tried 2 other pieces and it was the same. Needless to say I threw the whole box out. I wish I was able to return it but I'm not going back out on a rainy night and live on the other side of the island.
