I went there just for gel removal, which had been done by another nail salon. This was my first visit. The place itself was very modern, stylish, and clean. However, the receptionist was not friendly at all, and I didn't feel welcomed. She didn't even say hi to me when I walked in. While I was waiting for my esthetician, she was having a conversation with another customer (probably a regular) in a much nicer mood. It was not very pleasant to see that. My esthetician did her work, but that was it. I felt like I was just one of her tasks for the day. They do their job okay, but their customer service is lacking. I usually have fun and feel welcomed when I go to a nail salon, but I didn't get any of that here. I don't think I would come back to this place in the near future. read more

There's a a few things that I like about this nail studio. It's the only nail salon that I know that offers 'Bio sculpt' service. What is 'Bio sculpt' you ask? I'm still learning. What I do know is that it has a bit less chemicals than shellac or other products. I've tried them all; from acrylic tips to en-vogue. This was my second trip to Varnish and the finished product looks awesome! Here's my critique. I don't like the pricing structure, it is different than other salons. And as this is the second time I didn't get what I anticipated-miscommunication, I feel like it is very confusing. It's the responsibility of the staff to make it clear. If you want a "manicure", it's an extra fee, 15$ and very lame massage. I didn't get a massage on my hands or feet. But was charged for it. I know it's a small thing but it's what keeps me coming back to the same nail tech. The first time I asked for a manicure and paid for it (comes with the bio-sculpt service) but I didn't get one. When the receptionist told me I was supposed to get a manicure with the sculpt and I didn't get one she shrugged. No attempt to compensate or offer consolation. Then it happened again on my second visit. Both times I requested something and I didn't get what I requested. Frustrating! This is not a walk in studio, so when you request an appointment make sure you confirm with your nail tech on the day of your appointment that you are paying for what you want. I did speak with the Manager and she was willing to credit me back a portion of my bill but I felt bad for making a big deal about it since I'm a new customer. Also, when I was standing in the studio . I asked to use the washroom and while I stood in line waiting for the person who locked them self in the bathroom for a long time, I was approached repeatedly (3X) in a matter of 5 minutes which made me feel really uncomfortable. I was being overly scrutinized because they thought I might steal something. Ironically, I had intended on buying some make up but they were not doing a good job of selling to me. They just kept asking, "Can I help you"? The staff here are professional but awkward and not very personable. I felt rushed, uncomfortable and embarrassed when I went to pay. My bill came to 167.00$ + 10.00$ tip, for a mani-pedi combo bio sculpt or whatever because I still am confused about why it cost that amount when I was quoted 110.00$. The bio sculpt is more ethical then shellac, so If that's something you don't care about you can save yourself 100$. I'm still on the fence about becoming a regular here. read more

As per most of the other reviews I have read about this establishment, my friends and I's experience was just as bad if not worse. This was the most awful costumer service I have ever experienced in my life. My two friends and I had started by booking these mani and pedi appointments a month in advance. I wanted everything to be perfect as this would be for my wedding celebration. I called in to make these appointments but then was told to email them all our contact information and EXACTLY what we wanted with a time. Which I took the time to do. Excited for our girls day we went into Varnish at noon and started by getting our pedicures. The women upstairs that worked on our toes were very wonderful and did an amazing job. However, when it came time right after to do our nails my two friends were sat down and had begun to get their nails done. We all sat there chatting for some time and then I realized both of their manicures were finished before mine has even begun. I asked the esthetician why they have not yet started my nails yet. We had made a late lunch reservation at 2:30pm, obviously thinking that would have given us plenty of time. The esthetiician then told me she was bringing me downstairs to do my nails, I then followed her and she brought me right to the receptionist and it was all down hill for them from here... Immediately the receptionist said "you are the one that booked your appointments wrong" and I replied with pardon? She was on the deffence side which made me realize it was her I had talked to on the phone a month ago and communicated with through email. It seemed as if she was trying to protect herself as she made a big booking error and did not book in my nails until an 1.5 hours after my toes!! We made it extremely clear that we wanted the three of us to have mani and pedis at the same time. We even booked a Sunday instead of a Saturday because they said they would have more staff on Sunday. She basically told me tough luck and that I would have to sit there and wait. I got upset as we have had plans and now I have to make my two friends sit and wait around with me. What was the point of booking a month in advance? and accommodate them with a different date as we originally wanted? We then sat in the lobby while the nail tech and her client kept talking about us while looking over and glaring like we were doing something wrong. It made us feel extremely uncomfortable. Later I found out that client was a regular and it made me think that she just did her nails before mine because they were friends. The nail tech then stormed over to me asking what I wanted. I then showed her a picture that I wanted ( which was a faded french) and she just walked away saying " nope I cant do that".... After that I was extremely disappointed and upset. Now waiting and feeling anxious about missing our reservation she finally called me over to her chair. She did not look or communicate with us at all making us feel even more uncomfortable!! She was so aggressive like she had it out for me while filing my nails. Her being so rough and fast she ended up slicing my thumb which hurt. She said sorry with absolutely no meaning behind it and just kept dumping this powder on it which was not making it any better and I really would have preferred she didn't. My thumb was swollen and red for a week after I had to put a bandage over it( the picture is below) After this I had asked her to please let the other tech that did my toes to do my hands as she was lovely and this girl was clearly miserable and told me she did not know how to paint french. The other women was happy to do my nails and she had apologized to me for the awful behavior of the other tech and receptionist who were now behind the front desk talking about us yet again. It was now 330, we have been here for 3.5 hours. Our fun exciting day has turned into a long dragged out disaster. When we arrived at the front to pay I had asked her to speak to a manager as I felt we were treated extremely poorly. The receptionist just then gave me a pathetic apology. A little to late that was. She told me the manager was not able to talk. I then told her I do not mind paying but I would like to have a discussion with the manager first so she was aware of how they were treating clients. As they had my credit card on file and we were tired of how the receptionist was talking to us we left for the evening to try to carry on with our plans. Up to my neck in wedding planning and packing for the trip I finally had time a couple days later to call her back. I was furious to find out she had already charged my CC without my approval. She did not care what I had to say and said that we made her staff cry, which I did not see. and did not give me an apology. I'm not looking for a free treatment, I was looking for basic human respect. I will never be going back to this horrendous salon and would not recommend it to anyone. I don't have any experience getting my nails done, so this review comes to you from someone who had a first time bio sculpture set with extensions. It's nestled upstairs in beauty mark.. Something I didn't realize at first so I drove by it a couple of times. I was greeted warmly by everybody there and was promptly seated at a station where the receptionist put down the circle of nail color options. This was new to me so I just kind of sat there awkwardly not knowing what to do. I suppose I was meant to look at the options. I just said black. Anyways, my nail artist was called Faye (I'm pretty sure, she kind of introduced herself abruptly). The experience was kind of awkward. I had never gotten this done before and wasn't really sure what to do. I watched. I looked at the wall a lot. I tried to make small talk but she wasn't very social. I will say though, she was very talented. I have seen a lot of bad nails and it made me scared of them for many many years. They are beautiful. She was diligent and anal and all the things you would want out of a professional nail person. She just wasn't really talkative, and then randomly said "this might burn when we put it under the UV light" and didn't really explain why. I was left to wonder, 'how badly?', 'why?', 'will it harm me?'. It didn't burn, so that's good. I asked why and she basically told me to just be glad I wasn't getting gel nails. I am now afraid to try anything but bio sculpture. Also, I must mention when I asked for extensions there was an obvious air of judgement that I don't have naturally long nails. It was palpable. Overall, they are beautiful, I am hooked. It's effin' expensive, especially if you like to tip well, and it's awkward and smells bad, but she did a wonderful job. After visiting Varnish, I won't be going to any other nail salons again! I booked an appointment for acrylic fill with gel polish and Swarovski crystal design + gel polish pedicure. The girl at the front also gave me swatches of different polishes so I can choose my colours while I waited. I believe my nail tech's name was Linh, she did an amazing job! I showed her a pic of what I kind of wanted and she did a much better job than expected. She was fast, precise, friendly and very detail oriented. Even with my Swarovski crystal designs, it only took just over an hour. Then I was seated in a very comfortable spa chair for my pedicure. My pedicure tech was also very clean, friendly, efficient. My toes look better than ever. After all was done, I was charged $135 which I think is reasonable for the quality of work done. The atmosphere at Varnish is modern, clean, professional and inviting. Let me start by stating outright that I am detail oriented and a perfectionist, but I try to carefully explain what I want, all of which probably do not make me an ideal client. I phoned the salon and asked for their most experienced nail technician - I think I noted that I'm a perfectionist. I believe I was booked with the owner/manager, but now I forget the name of the woman... Pros: she patiently listened to me explain what I wanted, asked me questions, and waited/worked on filing my nails while I decided on sparkle color. Cons: seemed distracted by her phone and rushed the job towards the end. My ask: sparkle tips that were light-moderate density on end and faded up to about 1/3 of nail - she suggested 1/2 of nail and I agreed. End result: First nail looked great, so I let her do her thing and didn't pay much attention... Was really disappointed to end up with tips with fairly high density sparkles that appeared as though half my nail was painted with sparkles and random sparkles in middle of nail. That is, the fade did not fade as much as I wanted and looked haphazard. I actually thought of going back to ask them just to put a solid color over top, but decided it wasn't worth my time. Final thoughts: Might be willing to go back for solid color or maybe a jewel but would not risk sparkle tips unless I was able to give input on each nail as I have been asked to do at other salons. Honestly, the best nail salon I've ever been to. My fiance and I visited Vancouver in January. Little did I know he was planning to propose and ended up planning out a whole day of activities leading up to it- one of them being a gel mani pedi. He chose Varnish based off yelp reviews and the staff was so accommodating in helping him book appointments for me and even booked 2 different appointment times in case everything didn't go as planned. When I arrived I was ushered to the upstairs area since I was getting a pedicure and manicure (pedi area is upstairs, just mani downstairs). I loved that they had 2 different levels. It made it feel so exclusive. My nail tech was Li and she was so sweet and talented. I felt so relaxed sitting in the massage chair while soaking my feet and choosing my color. I actually was sick when I visited and Li always made sure I had water to drink. She helped me pick out the perfect red shade too (Malaga Wine)! The space itself is so cute with a modern vibe and has tons of nail color choices. One of my nails broke the day before and she put a tip on that one so I could keep my length. My fingers and toes looked flawless when I left- and of course perfect for my proposal! Fast forward to six, yes SIX, weeks later and my nails were still FLAWLESS. She even told me the tip would only last about 2 weeks but it never budged. I've never gone more than three weeks without having to get a new gel manicure. The grow out was definitely embarrassing but I just wanted to see how long they would last. When I got them redone at six weeks it's not because they were chipping but because my nails were growing so long and getting in the way- ha. I don't know what kind of magic Li did but I would recommend this nail salon a thousand times over. I honestly wish I could come here every month, but unfortunately I live on the opposite side of the US. 11/10 would recommend. read more

I have been regularly getting my nails done at Varnish for some time now. I found this place a few years ago, and for their prices, it is the best place around! It's clean and they use quality products, so nails always turn out great. I've had only a few minor issues, and they are happy to fix them when they arise. The only thing I was unhappy about was when they changed my appointment from a Thursday to a Friday, and nobody called to tell me (yes, they send email reminders two days in advance, but I delete those without opening because I know I already have the appointment in my calendar). With saying that, You need an appointment here... don't expect to just drop in! I used to find this annoying in the past (when my nails need to be redone, I want to go right then!) but I've gotten over that by booking my next appointment right then for 2 weeks later. My first time having my nails done at Varnish I was very disappointed that the crystals had fallen off within three days. However, the gel polish stayed on for weeks without a single chip so I decided to give them another go. I must say that this has been my go to nail salon in Vancouver ever since. I can keep the gel polish on for a month easily without it ever chipping. My most recent visit they did a nail art fish! The ladies suggested I go with a googly eye and I was in a YOLO mood and agreed thinking it would fall off in a couple days like the crystals. Must to my surprise I've had googly eyed fish nails for a month now!! If you are looking for long lasting nails with all the color options you could ever dream of, I would certainly recommend this place. Just be weary about your embellishments. The only reason I am not giving five stars is I do find the place to be a little chatty. The salon is located on the second floor of the BeautyMark store so it's like a little hidden getaway from the busy streets of Yaletown - even if it's just for an hour or so. As soon as you arrive, you're greeted with friendly staff and offered something to drink. Then you get to enjoy your pedicure in the comfy and relaxing massage chairs. The ladies at Varnish always do a great job on my nails. My nails tend to grow out before the polish even chips! Whenever I go on vacation, I always get the gel polish for extra long lasting nail colour. For special occasions or if I'm just feeling inspired I like to get some nail art done on some or all of my fingers. Every single time, I get lots of compliments from friends and even strangers! I had been looking for a salon that did Bio Sculpture nails and came across Varnish on Instagram. I looked on their website and they advertised that they do Bio Sculpture nails and that "Bio Sculpture Gel has a thicker consistency and can be used for overlays or sculpting." I called and inquired about the service saying that I only like sculpted nails with Acrylic or Gel and not tips. I also said that I prefer Acrylic because it can be soaked off unlike Gel. The whole reason I was looking for Bio Sculpture was to try out a healthier alternative, like the website says, to grow and strengthen my natural nails and add just enough length so the tips of my nails wouldn't peel or break. I specified that I was not looking for length, just strength. I was reassured that this can be done. At the appointment, the nail tech started to prep my nails and then brought out tips. She was friendly enough but when I questioned her, she said that Bio Sculpture is not for sculpting and the name can be misleading. She said my nails were so short, the only way to add the "length" and to make this work was to add tips and then when I come back, not the second time but the third, I could then get the tips taken off and Bio Sculpture could be added on top. When I asked about Acrylic, she said that the other nail techs only specialize in Gel and sculpting needs to be given notice and requested because not everyone was trained in it. I'm not great with confrontation at all but I swore the website says Gel, Acrylic and Bio Sculpture (which clearly says it can be used for Sculpting). I also know that I specified a sculpted service and asked when their availability was to have that happen, I didn't ask for them to fit my schedule. I am not sure whether this tech just wanted to do the easy route by giving me tips and not taking the time to sculpt or the salon's website provides extremely misguided information about their services. The salon felt like a great environment when I arrived and it absolutely has awesome reviews , that's half the reason I went there but my own experience with this nail tech did not provide the results that I wanted and I still paid almost $80. I would've been fine changing my service to just a basic manicure but that didn't feel like an option. I'm not the professional but I did my due diligence and the information given to me was clearly not the same as the actual service received in the salon. I have no problem setting aside time for an appointment, driving from Burnaby to Yaletown and paying $80 if I'm leaving there happy, but I probably won't go back and if I do, it would definitely not be to the same nail tech. I'm sure the other techs are great, they were busy and had clients who were clearly returning clients, this is NOT a review of them. I just don't need to be convinced to get something done that I never wanted in the first place. read more

Varnish is my go-to nail salon. It is excellent value for money. Sure, I may pay $10 - $15 more per visit than some of the other nail bar places I have frequented, but in the long run I'm much better off. All of the girls at Varnish are excellent - quick & detail-oriented and very friendly. They always make an effort to remember their clients. The salon is clean and I love their massage chairs. My manicures and pedicures last longer than anywhere else, so I need to come less frequently. They offer everything from classic looks to really fashionable & unique gel manicures with crystal applications. They offer a huge selection of polishes to choose from by various brands. I've been getting my nails done with hard gel and extensions for a very long time now and no one ever made them look as amazing as Nikki from Varnish Nail Lounge. I got a fill in (another salon did my gel nails before and they looked really shitty :D) She really took her time to make them look perfect.They look exactly like I wanted them and the whole experience in the salon was lovely. Clean and cute environment, welcoming and friendly staff and you get 10 % on any purchase from the store underneath the salon that is also to die for. WORST service from a sloppy entitled salon! Lazy, and super unprofessional. I have been a regular customer and INCREDIBLY accommodating to their needs from the start- yes, you have to think of their need before yours like their ridiculous, always booked up schedule (lol). But clearly they don't need my 20+% tips anymore - which is fine by me and I'm sure by their righteous attitude they won't feel that way either and will have have some entitled response, I look forward to laughing at it! That doesn't mean I won't review them. I go in Monday last week- I wanted a neon tip French manicure. I get told bluntly the girl doesn't have the time for that, even the other kind girl doing my pedicure offers to help as she can tell how disappointed I was, but then miraculously the girl doing my manicure does have time - wow, amazing, it's like I suddenly mattered after being a regular customer! I guess that very busy schedule isn't so busy after all! I notice once after my actual busy work week has gone by the girl has jacked up my nails, air bubbles everywhere-and my neon tips are not bright at all. I had various people tell me they look awful. That's embarrassing! Whatever, mistakes happen that I understand. I call to ask to get them fixed, heck I even feel bad and was super accommodating. I even suggest how maybe this was my fault somehow. No one answers my first two calls and voicemail, third times the charm until I got to speak to someone! I have to wait a WEEK later to get seen! Whoever organizes their schedule is way too precious and puts their availability over yours EVERYTIME! I go in, she blames me for her not painting white under my neon tips. How can a service provided by an expert ever be the customers mistake, please tell me what vortex I need to go through to live in this magical dimension. This isn't true in my job- I'm accountable for all my errors, how is this diva not? She barley takes off all the neon, her boyfriend comes in half way and interrupts us, twice, I even had to point out where she missed painting a 1/4 of my right ring nail so she can do a half decent job, I say I want just neutral nail polish now and she grabs the neon polish that was on my tips before, wtf.! We JUST talked about not doing that. I swear if you don't watch like a hawk you're gonna leave with a half ass job like me. No payment for fixing the mistake which is to be expected, I still after all of this tipped her $15. I can understand how I might seem like I was mad in the moment by the obvious anger in this review, but actually I felt bad for her sloppiness and overall laziness. I have had the manager do my nails before, she's great. So I'm thinking in this moment, I tip this lazy girl and leave, next time request someone else. I am a regular customer and like some of the other staff. Well that didn't happen.. I get through 3 back to back meetings right after my second visit with them, and notice that I have a CRACK in my right thumb nail and NEON YELLOW showing through 7 fingers! I call back, naturally pissed, and say I have to see them again tomorrow in the morning as I leave for Toronto on Friday. The conversation from here on is where their service really plummeted. She asks me if I need to get a whole new set or touch ups- aren't you the expert? How am I meant to asses/recommend what to do next? I don't know! I say I guess a full set, she says their precious schedule is all booked up and might not get to see me and she will call me back. An hour later she calls and of course, their super busy schedule is more important and trumps my actual busy schedule - they can't see me. I explain how I am very disappointed and how obviously they don't care about my business. All the excuses come out and she begins to talk over me and says how she was accommodating to me being late! Ya, I was late because I HAD TO COME IN TWICE because YOU made a mistake, and in order to do that I had to bump my meetings to see your sloppy ass again, and my clients ran behind. Also, our original time was 2:15, I was set for then. You guys wanted me to come in 15 minutes earlier after we made our appointment (again with their darling schedule) I tired and I couldn't HOWEVER I arrived at 2:10pm, so girl I was actually early, what are you talking about? Thanks for not bumping your appointments , or finding a creative solution tomorrow to fix the second round of mistakes YOU DID, like I had to do to see you today. Yes I'm pissed, and this review is biased I will give them that. I have huge meetings next week and get to rock a sloppy cracked manicure from an entitled salon. Had a fabulous experience here. I'm glad I found this nail salon and will come back again. It started with a very friendly and funny receptionist (Una) who booked my appointment. I was informed that my appointment would be with Tiffany. When I got to my appointment I told Tiffany that my nails are short and told her that unfortunately she doesn't have much to work with for shaping it. I told her I wanted a gel polish that looked natural and clean. She looked at my nails and told me that she can still shape them nicely and recommended a colour for me. My nails turned out fantastic! I loved the shape and colour. She did a great job and I'm so happy with them, that I will definitely come back again. The ladies who work here are all personable and they make sure your nails look perfect. This is going to be my go to salon in Vancouver. Great work ladies!!! read more

They only reason I not giving them 5 stars is because booking an appointment is challenging. I usually have to call 3 times before i get anyone on the line. Love the salon and the girls. Very nice, easy to talk to. Nikki did my nails today and I felt that she did a great job under the time constants. I've always gone to the same girl to do my gel nails and I usually just let her do what she wants since she knows what I like (deep French, so regrowth is not obvious and I can get away with a regular fill rather than a French fill). I forgot to book ahead of time so she was full, but Yelp recommended varnish so here I am. My left hand is perfect. I had broken two nails on my right though and had to get glued on tips for them. Would have much rather not, but the artist who can do sculpted extensions wasn't available until next week. Because of the tips, the two fingers that has them looks... Off. It's just much thicker and wider than I wouldve liked. Also one finger with the tip was filed too short compared to the others but I didn't notice until the end of my appointment. Not too big of a deal but I'm a little bit of a perfectionist. One last issue , for some reason their bio gel forms these tiny micro bubbles after curing, I only noticed after I left. Again, not a big deal just something I noticed. Now if you've read this far, you'll see that I had much to complain about for one particular finger. Nikki noticed it before I left and offered to fix it for me another day, or have the other girl (Christina I believe ?) to sculpt it next week without any prompt from me. Reception/ front desk is the only area that I think could do with improvement, the person there seems friendly enough, but generally distracted and not really knowledgeable about the business's offerings. Also a pity that they apparently create a profile for you to make your appointments but won't attribute your visits to their "loyalty program" unless you specifically request it each time - basically you don't accrue anything unless you ask each time. Otherwise the lady that does my nails does a pretty good job. Reasonably priced and the work has been consistent so far. read more
