    Pesto and garlic bread
    Rosanna F.

One word: DELICIOUS! Lots of clean seating and yummy food - I had to visit a couple of times bc it's so good. They make their own pasta and you order from the chef at the counter. We had the pesto, garlic bread and "zoodles" and all the dishes were tasty!

bolognese with penne pasta(half eaten)- couldn't wait to take a picture to try

Today when the Red route took us to old town and I saw The White Hart Inn I said to Jan let's do an early dinner there and she agreed. We continued the route and stayed on back to the stop in old town. We love Alfresco dining but it was too cold and windy today. We went inside and the restrauant was packed. It's open seating. No hostess, no sign in. We were lucky and just happened to be standing next to a table that opened. We had been there about 5 minutes. The restaurant/ pub is rich in history, established in 1516. It's small with limited bar seating and prehaps 8 to 10 tables. It is noisy from conversation, tosting and music, but we didn't have a hard time communicating. It has a great vibe. It's a fun venue and popular with the locals. The menu is not large and has several Scottish offerings. To start, Jan was cold and wanted an Irish coffee. I ordered an Innis and Gunn larger. Innis & Gunn is an acclaimed Scottish brewery founded in 2003 in Edinburgh. It had a slightly citrus flavor. Jan ordered muscles and I ordered the steak and ale pie, served with a charred Hispi cabbage wedge, buttered mash and Merlot beef dripping gravy. It was very tasty, very robust flavor. I loved the cabbage; great flavor. I had to look up hispi cabbage and it is a variety of green cabbage. The muscles were good and the broth very nice. We had a lovely time and a good meal. Our good luck at freelancing dining venues while we explore Ireland and Scotland continues.

The setting still looked ancient and the overall ambiance was befitting. Small place though. The food and drinks however disappointed. They could have put more efforts to turn the place into something much more than it is. Service was efficient without being really excellent.

It looks medieval on the outside, and no linoleum or florescent lights on the inside. It's basically a few bars and multi-purpose rooms, so if you need to meet up or have an event on campus, its a great place. Library Bar is probably the favorite, it's definitely the default one we go to. The sports one is great for matches and something like the Superbowl. Gets busy, so service can take some time, but it's not too bad. Looks great, cheap booze, cheap but decent food. It's just what students want.

We had trumpet, sax, organ, guitar bass and drums as well as a vocalist. We did a lot of Chicago songs as well as Blood, Sweat & Tears, Blodwin Pig, The Faces, Neil Young and the Ides of march. Fond memories and so happy to see this place rise once again from the ashes. I've visted several times for a coffee and often have one of their large Pain au raisins........much larger than any others in Edinburgh ! The staff are all very pleasant and I really love the laid back atmospphere in this new and much improved building. The builders did a really splendid job of the renovation. Every single bite is delicious, and I'm impressed that even the beans taste homemade, perfectly cooked and not at all mushy. Easily the best meal I've had in town so far! My omnivorous dining companions were just as pleased with their selections as well. The pancakes looked super fluffy and beautifully presented, stacked high with all sorts of fresh and candied fruits. Even the scones are something special, glossy on the top and packed full of plump sultanas. We made reservations but it doesn't seem necessary if you go for breakfast. It was pretty quiet and easy to get a prime table right away.

Adjoined to the catering facility, the John McIntyre Centre bar was a convenient place to grab a meal if we felt too lazy to venture into town, or go grab a pint and hang out with your friends. One of the bar's greatest attributes is its cheap alcohol.. a pint of beer was just a £1 and I hope it stays that way for the new batch of students! The entire JMC building underwent an £8 million refurbishment in 2009, so the bar is fully decked out with nice furniture and a HUGE flat screen tv; I've got memories of watching the British craze the X-Factor in there! While most of the food served here (paninis, bagels and salads) is passable, I'd recommend the University Library Bar instead, as the menu is pretty much identical and the meals are of better quality. During the semester time, great for students, but unless you're taking a day trip to Arthur's Seat, anyone else would seem out of place!

Like most bars, burgers make up a significant part of the menu. The portions are quite large, and the prices are good too. For food, I have little negative to say. Unfortunately, the bar lacks any atmosphere at all. I don't know if they are trying hard to attract in the huge student population in Pollock Halls, but as far as I can see, they are not succeeding. There is a pool table, and a television for sports matches, but it's unfortunate that there is never a crowd in here. Overall, food good, drinks prices okay, atmosphere lacking.
