While it's really in the middle of nowhere (unless you are going to Bethany/Rehoboth beach from DC/Baltimore, in which case it's about mid-way), this is so far one of the best, if not the best ice cream spots I have found so far. We stopped there with a friend of mine, visiting from SF. Both French and big snobs when it comes to food in general and ice-cream in particular, we were initially attracted to this spot by the cows grazing around. We were not disappointed. Despite a bit long of a line and a moment spent trying to figure out which ice-cream we wanted, we were absolutely delighted with the end result. Fresh, creamy and mind-bogglingly delicious ice-cream convinced us that the stop was worth it. Regretting our inability to stuff more of it into us, given how full we were, we are definitely planning on coming back here in the future, with more empty stomachs and frozen food bags to bring some back home. Bonus - as you are eating your ice-cream, you can (totally should) watch the cows who provided the milk for your ice-cream graze in the background. This place is amazing. Delicious handcrafted ice cream made on their dairy farm. You can even see the cows roaming around while you sit on the benches/chairs outside. They have a huge selection if flavors and even sell cheese, popcorn and jam in their stores. The ice cream was extremely creamy. Beware that the scoops are huge. A single is really two scoops so come ready to eat a lot of ice cream. Remember to ask for samples before committing to a flavor. A few of my co workers were talking about the ice cream here. So I decided to stop by on my way home and I'm glad I did. When I first pulled up I was hesitant to even get out of the car. The line was long but I didn't have to rush home so I got in line. The line moved swiftly and in 6 minutes I had my order. The portions are very generous and the price is reasonable. I got 2 scoops (1 butter pecan 1 maple walnut) in a waffle cone along with a pint of lemon chiffon to take home. Total of $8.50. The ice cream is exceptional, some of the best I have ever eaten in my life. My wife, son, and mom all got shakes which were to die for. It was a great and welcoming refreshment following the Apple Scrapple Festival we had just been at. Another young couple came in and got ice cream and a large thing of chocolate milk they made on site and he seemed to love it. My mom thought we might have left the cheese there and when I called that afternoon to ask if we had the woman on the phone was unhelpful and had a bit of an attitude as she said they were busy and basically said there was nothing at all she could do for me and not even give me a name of someone I could talk to. I'm big on hospitality and for that this place doesn't get a 5 but it does excel in product and ambiance though it's definitely farm fresh as the smell overwhelms you as you pull up, then again just coming from the town of Rapa Scrapple it wasn't that bad. Best ice cream ever! The better-half and I first found Vanderwende's on a stormy afternoon in 2014. We wanted to make sure that it wasn't just nostalgia for that awesome road trip that made the ice cream so amazing in our memory, so we had to wait several years to actually post this review. The ONLY complaint we can voice is that Vanderwende's is in Delaware, and we live in New Mexico. For the record, the ice cream is actually worth the six day road trip all by itself. In the middle of nowhere Delaware (pretty sure that most of Delaware is the middle of nowhere, but this is true nowhere) there lies a small dairy farm with a store out front. You'll see smattering of Holstein cows to the side. These are the producers of the milk that is used to make the ice cream inside. You can't get more fresh than that. Vanderwendes offers pretty standard flavors... you won't find any crazy flavors here. What you will find is gigantic scoops with very low price tags. I wanted to get a cute photo of the ice cream cone with the cows in the background so I originally asked for a 3 scoop waffle cone with 3 different flavors. The high school girl taking my order looked aghast. She said "one scoop fills the cone, the second scoop come to here (and gestured)...I'm not even sure how you would get a 3rd scoop on there". She did say that I could get 3 flavors in 2 scoops. That didn't make much sense to me, but I acquiesced. Once I saw the cone I got what she was saying. Basically every 1 Vanderwendes scoop equals 3 ice cream scoop scoops. We couldn't even finish the cone. Price was $4; a serious bargain. We went with lemon chiffon, cookies and cream, and peanut butter fudge crunch. My favorite flavor was the PBFC with cookies and cream coming in second. FYI my friend and I couldn't finish the whole 2 scoop cone. On the way home we stopped again and got a single scoop cone this time... berry cheesecake and apple pie. The apple pie was fantastic, the berry cheesecake a meh in my book. If you ever drive by Vanderwendes be sure to stop. If you go for a 3 scoop waffle cone I would love to see it. read more

This is such a cute place to get ice cream! The store is very cute too! You can order outside from the window or you can go inside. They have a lot of diverse flavors and toppings and the service is quick! When I went there was a long line but we got our ice cream really quickly. This is a roadside ice cream shop started by the same family that owns and runs Little Wagon Produce just a few miles away (also a great spot, esp for the delish bi-color corn). The milk/cream is from the cows that live on the same land as the shop. There are several excellent regular flavors available all year round, but the seasonal flavors are outstanding (pumpkin in the fall, eggnog in the winter, and so on). It's fresh, delicious ice cream that is made on-site, sells for a reasonable price, and served up with a smile! Be warned -- the scent of the home-made waffle cones is intoxicating when you walk in. They also sell locally-produced cheeses and milk in glass bottles. If you are on your way to or from the beach, do yourself a favor & stop at Vanderwende's. read more

The ice cream was ok. We got cappuccino crunch, coconut and cookie dough and nothing special. Similar to store brand ice cream. Not as creamy as I would have expected coming from a place that makes there own ice creams with cows in the back farm. We were also disappointed that they didn't offer dairy free ice cream even though it stated that online. When I asked about the dairy free options the male cashier just rolled his eyes and ignored my question. When I mentioned it stated dairy free options online he said they don't make dairy free ice cream anymore. If that's the case the website should be updated. They obviously get a lot of traffic due to the location but not worth it!!!! read more

So wish we had planned ahead and brought a cooler so that we could take ice cream home. Flavors are just interesting enough to appeal to everyone. Great heavy creamy mouthfeel, not too fatty, but a touch "sticky". Flavorings seemed to be from artificial, although the dairy is legit. Prices (enormous scoops, everyone asks "is that just one scoop"?) can't be beat. You can sit outside at the lounge tables with the very cows you are beholden to. read more

Expect to wait in line to order, sometimes as long as 15 - 20 minutes. It's worth it, though! Mmmmm delicious! A great stop on the way back from the Delaware beach. There were a ton of flavors to choose from, as well as ways to have your ice cream: milkshake, in a cup, sugar cone, homemade waffle cone. There are also a lot of toppings too- including "wet nuts," which apparently are walnuts in maple syrup, must be a local thing! The only downsides- long wait, only one bathroom (with a looooong line) and tacky signs on the glass to not touch the glass. I am so glad we stopped and I would definitely go again! read more
