It wasn't until we met Clarence, that we found "the one". We had originally gone to the dealership to see a different car, but weren't a fan of the previously owned by a smoker. I used to be a die-hard Honda driver and would bring my Honda to Vanderstyne because they were recommended. Obviously, there were certain services that could only be done with Honda so it did limit my services with Vanderstyne sometimes which then I would have to go to the Honda dealership, etc. After a few years of experience with Vanderstyne, I literally bought/switched from Honda to a Toyota (Prius) because of the exceptionally trustworthy and reliable experience Ive had with them. Good salesperson. Terrible customer service. Purchased a brand new car; wheel cover discovered missing when I got home. They insisted it was there and that it must have "popped off." Asked if it would have "popped off" if it had been installed correctly, as car had less than 200 miles on it...they refused to make it right. I've had 4 cars from them. I love their service department but they really disappointed me yesterday when discussing moving into a different vehicle. First time I ever felt "worked" and disrespected. It's actually zero stars. My mom, 84 years old and a long time customer, goes in for an inspection and leaves $900 lighter in the wallet. She has 32000 miles on a nine year old car, and this outfit does maintenance specified for 90000 miles. Of course they hide behind the "5 years" or 90000 miles and "well, she approved it". My mom drives maybe 500 miles a year and they know this since she goes there for her maintenance. Vanderstyne is an old time car dealership name in Rochester, so many old people, like my mom, who isn't exactly fully on her game like many 84 year olds, go to a name they trust. Took my Prius into Vanderstyne Toyota to have the hood cable replaced. The repair was estimated at $500. Almost all of it was labor due to the fact that Toyota designed the Prius hood like a Rubik's cube. I left the car on a Friday and was supposed to pick it up the following Monday. On Tuesday, they took the car out for a test drive for some unknown reason and got into accident that totaled my car. That's right, the vehicle was totaled while in their possession. That isn't the best part though. After telling me that they destroyed my car, they tried shaking me down for the $500 in repairs. Repairs i have no idea whether or not they made because they car was destroyed. Insurance told me that they would cover the damages if the car was released from the Vanderstyne.Vanderstyne then took this as an opportunity to hold the car HOSTAGE until they got paid. After that, they then had the nerve to ask if I was in the market to buy a new vehicle and if i wanted to talk to sales. This has to be borderline illegal. And if it isn't it should be. Name one other business where someone can fail to deliver an end product service or good to a customer but still can charge them. At minimum, these guys are slimy. I have done business with all 3 Rochester Toyota dealers. I keep coming back to Vanderstyne even though they are furthest from my residence because I trust them. About 10 years ago, another Toyota dealer ("A") where I bought a used car practically locked me in a room with the sales manager and withheld my keys to get me to sign a maintenance contract I didn't want and couldn't afford. Never darkened their door again. That car was always serviced at Vanderstyne. When I moved to Rochester in 1990 with a brand new Camry, the closest and therefore 1st dealer ("B") I used for service in Rochester couldn't properly diagnose a problem with my car for 2 years!! It was a computer programming fault that kept the car from charging in stop-and-go traffic. Vanderstyne found it right away. Twenty-plus years later I was again living very close to dealer "B", who sold me my current car because they had the exact configuration I wanted and they don't swap stock with other dealers. Since the 1st 2 years of maintenance are included I used them for service. They never remembered me from appointment to appointment. As soon as the included maintenance period was up, they didn't have time to sell me tires when I got a screw in a tire the day before a planned road trip. Had to go elsewhere for tires, and vowed I would never give them another nickel. I have gone back to driving 45 minutes out of my way to use Vanderstyne. They are always up-front with me, never try to hard sell me anything I don't really need, always find the problem the first time, and fix it right the first time. My mother purchased a Camry from Vanderstyne. she had all service and maintenance done there. I was reading through the receipts and saw that they changed the engine coolant 6 times in 60000 mi. I took the car in and asked how often should the engine coolant be changed? The service writer said 30000 mi. I pulled out the receipts and asked why they changed it 6 times at $80 each time. He didn't know because he was only working there a year. they offered a 15% discount on the next service. I said but this car will never be coming back here again. I love this Toyota dealership, and I've never been able to say that about a single Toyota dealership! I brought my car here to get the scheduled oil change, and while I was there they mentioned that they would see if there were any open recalls on my vehicle. I thought that was great considering that my horn had suddenly stopped working a while before. They scheduled a follow up appointment at my convenience; when I returned, not only did they complete all of the recalls, but they fixed my horn as well as my cruise control, free of charge (which may or may not have been related to the recall). They also took me by shuttle to the nearest mall, so that I didn't have to wait, while the repairs were made. I really appreciate their friendly and professional customer service! I recommend this dealership to everyone!! Also, as an added bonus, they have plenty of hot coffee, a vending machine, and even free chocolate biscottis (in the waiting room)!-- You will not regret coming here!!! read more

While things started out great buying a new Toyota from Vanderstyne, it quickly turned into a fiasco! Delivery of the vehicle was promised 4 times over 10 days, and 4 times they called to say "Oops, sorry, you can't have it today either." Finally, they promised to deliver it to our house but my father would have had to then drive the salesman to Syracuse, which is an hour away. He ended up meeting them 1/2 way, but still had to drive to Syracuse and then home. The last delay was because they needed an extra day for detailing. How much detailing does a brand new vehicle need? One thing it did need was to have the plastic protectant removed from the top, which we noticed was still there after we got it home. Other problems with them are too involved to go into here, but pretty much everything they say is a lie. Excuse me, they call them "misunderstandings". Suffice it to say that they don't care about anything after they cash the check! Zero follow up or customer service! Well, they did send a congratulations balloon... These people really know what they are doing! I am on my fourth lease from Vanderstyne. There is no pressure, the facility is extremely comfy with a relaxed atmosphere. Never any pushy sales people suffocating you with unneeded or unwanted package options. They listen to your needs and get you exactly what YOU want. This dealership has the worst customer service in the area. I have had numerous issues with the service department and it's always the same respone, it's not their fault. They destroyed my side steps with the lift, apparently the tech wasn't aware that you lift a truck by the frame, their response, not our fault. They lost the lug key to remove the tires, same response, not our fault. I leave the dealership after they "test drove" my vehicle after a repair, the brakes go to the floor with no resistance, almost rolling into 4 lanes of 5 o'clock traffic, again it's not our fault. My steering wheel shakes so bad at 30 mph you can't hold onto it, no shake at all when I came into the shop, guess what, not our fault. If you're looking for a place to get overpriced service, provided by under qualified techs under the direction of someone who is very defensive and great at pointing fingers at everyone and anything else rather than taking responsibility, this is your place. read more

I spoke with Carrie and she was great. I took my car in because of a door lock issue. I had already spoken with Toyota Corp about it. Vanderstyne did a diagnostic on my car and found the problem. My boyfriend & I met w/ a rep & then financing on Sun. She asked if I owed $ on my current van & if amount was quoted by bank rep & I said online account stated this was balance. She asked for bank contact info & I would hear from finance in the a.m. I contacted my own bank & secured a loan at a lower rate. I left message re: approval & seeking what to share w/ bank. He said I was set & to take purchase order to bank as it had all info. I went to Vanderstyne in p.m. w/ my kids & a check, but without my boyfriend. No privacy rooms available & we sat in middle of display room. He looked at 2 purchase orders & said there was a different amount listed on Sun's purchase than Mon's for amount owed on loan. They wrote what I reported as my closeout amount & bank said it was a different amount. I explained how finance led me to believe they were handling this & when I spoke with both the dealer & finance on Mon I was told I was set & to submit the pink sheet to bank. He said there was nothing they could do & I needed to pay the difference. I said this wasn't my error. I asked to speak to a manager. He went to backroom & said there was nothing he could do. I asked to speak to manager. It took awhile & he said they went by my report of the closeout. I said it was a balance not a close out & was lead to believe the dealership would be taking care of final #s. He stated I was wrong & shouldn't be upset w/ them but w/ bank.They sell cars everyday & know what to expect & I don't so I didn't know it was my responsibility to get closeout when I was lead to believe it was already taken care of & every car I purchased the dealership handled the closeout loan. I said to print off new order form so I could leave. I said I will be writing about my experience on social media. I was approached by Jay Vanderstyne who raised his voice that I will not threaten his employees. I asked if he was joking bc I did no such thing. He con't to berate me stating I was threatening. I tried to explain the situation so he had my version instead of what rep shared w/ him in backroom. He said I was dishonest bc I lied about loan. I tried to explain I gave my balance & not closeout amount & he aggressively yelled at me for not letting him speak. I told him I didn't need to hear him explain bc no one was listening to my main concern. He con't to be rude, aggressive & disrespectful. I said I felt deceived & he replied no one was deceitful & I was dishonest. I said he was entitled to his opinion & I wanted to complete the transaction so we could leave. My 11 yr old was upset & said she didn't understand why he was yelling. My 7 yr old cried & asked if we could leave. I was in shock & cried out of anger. Due to my ignorance, I completed the sale. I didn't know I could bow out of secured loan since I had a check. The rep apologized as he knew Mr. Vanderstyne was out of line. 2 employees stood there & watched him berate, accuse & embarrass me & did nothing. They watched my daughter & I cry & never even offered a tissue. The rep showed me how to work the electronics & stated I had 3 months free Sirius radio & to call & give them purchase info & I would be set. Sirius rep said the dealership has to contact them. I paid the bill. Mr. Vanderstyne if you're reading this, I hope your wife or daughters aren't treated by another the way you treated me. I hope your children never have to witness you be treated in that manner. At any point you could have asked to speak to me in private, apologized for the error or simply listened to what my concerns were instead of calling me dishonest & make accusations.You could have come out when I asked for a manager to hear my concern instead of having your salesman be the middleman. If you had handled things differently, I wouldn't be warning others of you. You're in the business of selling cars & when a customer asks if there's anything else they need, then share what to you may be obvious, but may not be to them. When you're asked if you're all set to share info w/ bank to secure a loan, your staff should ensure they have the RIGHT purchase order form.This wasn't my error, but I paid the unexpected $556 & for Sirius bc of my ignorance of not walking away from the deal. I contacted corporate in hopes you & your staff can receive training in people skills. Congratulations on taking what we hoped to be a positive experience & making it a terrible one. read more
