Blue Bear is by far my favorite campground. Not only is the weather so much cooler in the summer…read morethere (70-80 in July!), it's just a wonderful, down to earth place to be. The owner is great and the host (Mike) is beyond amazing! We've been camping there for 8 years and love it more each time we go. The camper spots are very spacious and C1-C3 are completely shaded. C3 is the best by far! But you have to book early because C3 is very popular! Some things to know before you go! They do not have water hookups at the sites - you fill your camper tank with water at the office area. They have spots with electric hookups. They have a dump station where you can empty your tanks on your way out. This is a simple & beautiful campground. There are trails to walk/hike, mountain view to see, bathhouse with 3 bathroom/showers, and one with just a bathroom. This is by far the cleanest bathhouse I have ever seen. They show great attention to this campground and make sure all their campers are happy. You can also purchase wood at the office. There are a few t-shirts for sale at the office, as well. If you haven't checked it out, you are truly missing out! This is a great place with great people!

When planning to travel to Boone in the RV I spent a considerable amount of time researching the…read morearea, although we have friends in nearby Blowing Rock we never traveled up here in the RV. This campground is old (circa 1970) but I rather call it nostalgic, it's an old school campground which means it's a little cramped and filled with a little bit of every kind of campers and full timers but I was able to navigate the steep entrance, small driveways and our tight site in my 41' Class A Diesel Rig without disconnecting my toad yes I have skills and a navigator in the seat next to me. The good far outweighs any negative comments I've read, this campground is nestled in a serene setting next to a mountain stream, there are lots of trees that filters the sun light most of the day. We stayed in site 77 a very level asphalt site that was long enough and wide enough to accommodate our Motorhome and our toad. Everyone here was extremely friendly and when the sun sets the sound of cracklin camp fires and the smell of burning hardwood fills the air. As far as ambient goes you'd be hard pressed to find a better setting it's only a few miles from town but a million miles from the distractions of the outside world. The not so good, yes every place has a few of them - the water pressure was horrible but fortunately my onboard water pump supplemented this so it wasn't that painful. The electrical supply was a shared distribution box and it was on the opposite side of the utility panel on my bus so you may want to bring an extension cord I had to route the cord under my RV fortunately my onboard 50 amp cord was just long enough. The sewer and water bibs may be located in closer proximity to your neighbor than to you and there were a few muddy spots around the site that we had to avoid and finally the most stressful part of our stay - exiting the campground back onto Hwy 105 it's like merging on to a super speedway with blind curves it can be a little intimidating. This is definitely a campground I'd book again, we loved the atmosphere and all our friendly neighbors and the staff was amazing too...

Had a wonderful weekend camping here. I was in site #5 next to the creek (Friday through Monday…read moremorning). The staff are all so welcoming and friendly! The grounds are well kept. The men's bathroom had 3 showers, 3 stalls, 1 urinal and 4 sinks. There's a pavilion where I got to hear live music Saturday evening. The creek is amazing and I enjoyed seeing the wildlife at my site (chipmunk and salamander). I'm looking forward to returning in a few months!!

Quite a unique experience !…read more I arrived and found my site to have a nice view of the adjacent cow pasture and the pastoral valley below. In addition, this site gave me a great opportunity to practice my leveling skills - usually I am limited to leveling 2-3 inches side to side and about the same front to back. But this site let me cut my teeth on a real all- American challenge - up to 11 inches side to side and 17" front to back! This is what Travel Trailering is all about! If the site wouldn't give a billy goat vertigo - you ain't camping! After I was all set with leveling the trailer, and my trailer tongue was ankle high and my rear kitchen chest high, I feared the fun was over. But then the rains came! Yes! No boring relaxing to worry about - all the runoff from the entire campground was funneled into a single site- and I was sitting in it! Gullies running diagonally under my camper appeared as I watched the downpour progress, giving me the pleasure of using my LevelMate Pro app to gently adjust the stabilizers as the gravel under each washed away with the rain. Luckily the only place I could park my Tow vehicle was downstream from the camper- effectively creating an effective obstacle to prevent the trailer totally washing away and into the New River, should it keep raining. The rain got less and less and for the rest of my stay the camper was pretty stable. B O R I N G, you say?? Wrong Grasshopper! Truly the Sh!tShow had yet to begin! As I was breaking camp, I noticed a guy with huge rubber gloves looking at my site and dragging a 200 foot sewer snake up the hill behind my truck. Concerned that he was going to scrape my pickup with the snake, I assured him I'd be out of his way shortly as I was leaving. He told me I was not impeding his progress and continued his work. So I quickly packed my griddle, chairs, hoses, electrical cords, etc and hitched up. Now I only had to remove my chocks and mountainous levelers and I'd be off toward other adventures. As I was raising the jack to settle my camper on the truck ball, my neighbor up the hill yelled that the flood waters were heading my way - the worker had gone ahead and done his work to let a sewage flood of biblical proportions head my way - the only path any liquid, water, or human waste, could possibly take. I tried to finish but was soon overwhelmed as the former rain gullies turned to fecal canals before my eyes. I had lost the "Beat the Turd" challenge as my levelers, chocks and shoes were flooded by the worker's brilliant timing! He watched as I battled to complete my exit while minimizing the damage. I asked if he knew where all that filth would flow and he said yes- that tried to fix it but it always ran through this site, so I guess he had to hurry to make sure I didn't miss the poop experience by leaving too soon. Props to him! If he had waited only 5 minutes to open the feces flood Gates I would have made it away cleanly, and I would not have the opportunity to spend my Sunday afternoon soaking my chocks, shoes, jeans, and levelers in a nice Clorox solution! So if you want a challenge and are tired of boring camping- you know where to head!!

They have a put putt course, and a very small outdoor in-ground pool, game room & a set of corn hole to play. They had a few events happening on the event board inside the check-in area. Small store inside to get the essentials. My biggest complaint as was others, is the WiFi. We didn't have any signal at our site and it got slightly better as we went towards the entrance. We had to go in town to research anything. I don't except amazing signal but enough to look up a few things here and there. It served the purpose for the weekend. It was clean and free of debris on the campsite it self. The sites are very close together so be conscious of that. We didn't spend much time at the site so it didn't bother us.

Honey Bear was our home again this past weekend. It was a nice weekend of glamping tucked away…read morenearby Boone. This was our second stay and we really enjoyed it from the nice wooded winding road up the mountain to the fresh air all around the camp site. This time, sadly our stay had some issues because the line from the well to most of the water was out. That meant no showers, faucets, or toilet flushing without a bucket in the tank. We were okay with it, for the most part, since we brought hand sanitizer, extra bottles of water (brushing teeth, rinsing things off, etc.), and it is camping after all. The second night was even better when the sinks and toilets were working like normal. The staff communicated about this issue the evening before we were supposed to arrive and did give us a discount on firewood, as a result of the inconvenience. Our checkin was great though. Abby was AWESOME! She greeted us with enthusiasm, humor, and was very welcoming. She even gave us local recommendations for things to do. We had arrived just in time for free root beer floats and vanilla lattes in the campground coffee cafe. We put in our order for firewood and were off to our "Group Camp Site" tent area in the more private area away from the rest of the sites. Each night, we wandered around the campgrounds. Plenty of RV hookups. It seems like it's about half tent sites and half RV sites. We even wandered off the trails and found the area where they host haunted trails during the Halloween season. What a surprise! Beautiful starry nights and funny to see ducks and geese wandering around the grounds. Saturday night, they showed a movie, but we didn't get back in time to watch "A Bug's Life" on the lawn. Nice little community. We had our own space to have good fun and a late cookout, but also were conveniently located to cars, the coffee cafe, not too far from the bathhouse, and a nice little walk up the street to a petting zoo.

Way atop the mountain out of Boone is this wonderful KOA campground. At 4,000 feet it's a climb…read morebut my little buggy chugged up the windy road like the little engine that could. Easy peasy. Complete with amenities most will enjoy they also have private cabins, tent sites, and various RV sites based on size and need. Cool. Ours was a pull through and our camper set up easily. Larger units (aren't they all larger these days) had to jockey them to fit into the narrow lots. It makes for a fun drinking game; however, the older style sites work better for units under 30 foot IMO. Everyone fit, eventually. The 5th star goes to the grounds crew. We got caught in the remnants of Tropical Storm Fred. 50 mph winds and torrential rain gutted many of the roads in the campground. Tractors with box scrapers appeared at sunrise and by noon the roads were nearly perfect. Impressive! Looking to breath some mountain air, view clear, star-filled skies at night, and kick back into a leisurely routine? Running the flag way up my "Give 'em a whirl" meter. Camp here.

The sides are gravel but full hookup, wifi worked great, water pressure was lower than other places. Our sewer connection cover was messed up so I sent an email to the office late the night we came, the next morning it was fixed. Our site wasn't very long enough for our truck and 20ft but there was enough room beside the trailer for the truck. Leaving on Sunday was a challenge because lots of people trying to get out at the same time. We blocked the road for a few minutes while getting hooked up to the truck. 7

What a little gem! This is a great day trip if you live in Charlotte and want to experience some…read morecooler temperatures. There is ample parking, and the main trail (Summit Trail) is very do-able. We saw plenty of seniors, small dogs, and children making this hike. There is an overlook only a mile in, and it's pretty impressive. You could stop and turn around there, and not be disappointed. The top overlook is gorgeous too and is only 1.9 miles to the top. The majority of the path is gravel, but there are some larger step stone rocks. The trail is not wheelchair friendly. There are picnic tables and restrooms in the park, and they even have a visitor center with gift shop. This was a popular trail with lots of App State students, and it was clean. They have other, shorter trails but the Summit trail was the main attraction.

DO NOT VISIT THIS PARK IN A RV or LARGE VEHICLE! We came from Boone which from our Google map said…read more23 minutes or 5 miles. The road to park is very steep in sections and has two (2) hairpin turns not designed for large heavy vehicles. When we got to the state park, at what felt like the top of the mountain, the only thing we saw were a dozen or so new picnic tables surrounded by a field of leafless trees ~ mid April. Very disappointed to say the least. IMPORTANT: On the way back down to Boone our brakes started to fail at about an .08 of the way down and we had the pull over and let them cool down for 45 minutes to let them stop smoking. This was a very scary experience and a poor decision to visit. Absolutely would not recommend this experience in any car or in an RV!!! Hope this helps someone.

We stayed in a campground outside of Boone so we had time to explore the town a little. We were…read morehere during the The Appalachian State Mountaineers football home opener against Lindenwood (never heard of them) but the Mountaineer won so our friends here were happy as was most of the town. I was warned that on game day the traffic would be horrific but honestly it seems to be horrible the entire time we stayed in the area but we were able to manage it okay. Being this is a college town there's a little bit of everything close by and there are lots of pedestrians and bicycle travel that don't always obey the rules of the road so I recommend you pay attention it seems the posted speed limits are just guidelines here. We didn't really spend a lot of time in town but did do a number of drive throughs just to get a sense of what was available and it turns out it's not unlike a lot of towns fast food and shopping on ever corner. Boone wasn't really the destination we were here more out of convenience to access the surrounding areas nothing bad here that I found but the real jewels here are outside the city limits...

A college town with many shops, restaurants and a Mast General Store. Because there is not of on…read morecampus housing, the student apartments being built on every available piece of land surrounding Boone. Downtown is still quaint for now, but the traffic and parking is starting to get a little unbearable. When there is a game or a special event going on, I suggest to re-schedule your trip here for another time. But I still love this town and will not stop coming here after the youngin' graduates.
