We prefer the river sites personally for the views & fishing. The campground owners are fantastic people who've become friends. They live on site and take great pride in the property. The property is always impeccable. They are always working. Such a gorgeous place!! The pond is in the center of the property - yes you can fish (catch & release). Areas setup with hammocks, corn hole, seating, etc. The new playground has been a big hit! Oh, and there's also a dog park area. The bathhouses are super clean and have air conditioning. The laundry room is brand new with great units and also A/C. They incorporated additional activities this year over at the pavilion which our family has loved! Bingo, tie-dye t-shirts, food trucks, live music, and more! Our grandson loves to join us. Lots of kids and a great area for them to all play. Tubing the river is always a fun treat! You can bring your own tubes or rent from the campground. The camp store has expanded and features a great mix of items - t-shirts, hats, hoodies, koozies, and more. As well as local jams, rubs, and other treats. They're in the process of building a new office/camp store so we're excited to see this complete. We have a 40' fifth wheel. No problems every getting in. They accommodate all size rigs. All sites have a concrete pad, fire pit and very nice large picnic table. Sites are spacious and do not feel cramped like we've experienced at other campgrounds. Wi-Fi is generally pretty good. We've been able to work remote on some of our trips. We even had phone service our last trip (AT&T)! Lots to do in the area! Hiking, Linville Winery (yum!), Linville Caverns, Grandfather Mtn and so many other great places. The office staff can certainly provide plenty of recommendations, too. There are 2 grocery stores in town about 15min away. There's also a local dollar store about 5min away. We cannot say enough good things about MRFC. We've met some great campers there who we now call friends. We truly love this place and already have bookings for next year!

I was greeted by a couple sitting in the rocking chairs on the porch. I think the winding road up the mountain and the driveway helped me realize how secluded this place is. There are only nine sites that are spaced far enough apart that you think you're the only person here! Each site is different than the others. The fire pits are amazing. You have to check them out for yourself! There are creeks everywhere. You can hear the water from every site (that's if you're not in a site next to one. Then you can see them also). There was thought put in to making each site spectacular. There are picnic tables, pads for tents, trees and posts for hammocks and awesome fire pits. There are hiking trails that lead up the mountain and into the Cherokee National Forest and around the property. You need to walk them to experience the beauty and the spectacular views! The bath house is like a large bathroom that feels like home! They even have blow dryers here to use! There are two sinks for dishes along with scrubbies and dish soap! The bath house or the camp store both have electrical outlets if you need to recharge batteries for your lights. Don't charge your phone! There's no need for that as a distraction! I will be back!

But THIS one, this one is different from most. There are only a handful of campsites, but the experience is what I imagine would be how campgrounds "should" be before commercial ones started popping up, and laying campsites on top on one another to maximize profit. Yes the commercial ones also brought along nice amenities such as clean bathhouses and electrical connections to keep up with what folks in general expect these days... and that's when locally owned campgrounds had to follow suit or risk going out of business. Here... it goes back to how it was. No electrical connections. Privacy. Views. Isolation. A connection with true nature without having to hike miles and miles with 40+ lbs of gear. The camp store is based on a honor system, you get what you need 24/7. If nobody is there just jot down what you grabbed and it will be billed to you. It is packed with lots of custom made locally goodies, along with standard necessities (first aid, bug repellent, hygiene stuff, snacks, etc) and are priced too low!!! The bathhouse. The bathhouse. Oh man, talk about putting thought into it. Feels just like my own mountain getaway... in my imagination of course because I don't really have a mountain getaway. Well I do now, except I don't really own it. That doesn't stop me from wishing I had own it though. Anyway, this review is already way too long. I guess that's what a great camping trip can do to you. It brings out the peacefulness in you, and make you so content that you want to write a novel about it. I'm not recommending this place to all. I'm just recommending it to those that truly enjoy camping... and nature with only the things we need and absolutely nothing that we don't. Peace!

We wanted to spend time hiking in Grayson Highlands & were late to the game on Labor Day weekend & all the camping was booked. After some digging we found this place & it was about 25 mins from the park & an easy drive. If you have ATT there is no service. We lost it about 30 mins before arrival. Our GPS still worked & it was nice to unplug but just a heads up. The important highlights: -Bathrooms are clean & well maintained. -Showers are hot & we never had to wait. -Must pay in cash -Dog friendly. My dog could be offleash & run around. No major roads around & very laidback. -The sights are right by the water so you can hear the creek & the views are nice -each site has a picnic table & firepit. The campsites are pretty close which was hard when 3 carloads with about 15 people showed up & made camp at the site next door. They weren't particularly cognizant of their noise levels & we couldn't sleep until around 11 when I finally went out to ask them to please keep it down. They only stayed one night & that's just par for the course sometimes with camping. The next night was much quieter & we slept great. All in all a great campground. An hourish from Boone & Blowing Rock. Bring supplies in as there aren't any major grocery stores around. Would stay there again if we were in the area.

The owner is great and the host (Mike) is beyond amazing! We've been camping there for 8 years and love it more each time we go. The camper spots are very spacious and C1-C3 are completely shaded. C3 is the best by far! But you have to book early because C3 is very popular! Some things to know before you go! They do not have water hookups at the sites - you fill your camper tank with water at the office area. They have spots with electric hookups. They have a dump station where you can empty your tanks on your way out. This is a simple & beautiful campground. There are trails to walk/hike, mountain view to see, bathhouse with 3 bathroom/showers, and one with just a bathroom. This is by far the cleanest bathhouse I have ever seen. They show great attention to this campground and make sure all their campers are happy. You can also purchase wood at the office. There are a few t-shirts for sale at the office, as well. Campers were recommending the scones, but they were already sold out by 9 am. Easy access to the trail, so no need to put your bikes on the rack to get to the White Top station. You just cross the street, turn left and hop on the path to the Virginia Creeper Trail. For those who do not want to cycle back up, there are several bike shuttle services to choose from. We stopped at Main Street Sweets and Eats in Damascus mid way through our ride. The showers are the best I have ever seen in a campground: hot water, lovely shower heads, beautiful and accurate amenities. We got breakfast both Saturday and Sunday. Homemade biscuits or bread, with sausage, or bacon, egg and cheese. They have artisan coffee! The sites have water and electricity. THERE is wifi at the office and relaxed indoor and outdoor seating there. The owners are delightful and knowledgeable about everything from gardening to music to outdoor adventure. This area needs the business with so much damage the Creeper Trail. These roads are great for biking. We saw very little traffic. We drove to Damascus, about 30 minutes, and took shuttle to Abingdon for a great ride back to Damascus. THERE is no food on that TRAIL and ingredients for fresh food was hard to find overall. Some light snacks at the Alvarez station which is about half way to Damascus. The Wicked Chicken in Damascus is great.

It was the high capacity (50 ppl and 10 cars), with flush toilets, shelters, and no outright policy against alcohol that sold me on the cradle of forestry campground, Briar Bottom located in the Black Mountain Campground. We camped one night at Red Oak. We had booked for two but, sometimes when you camp at the tail if the season (end of October) in the shadows of Mount Mitchell you aren't guaranteed the prettiest of weather. Getting here on those mountain roads was quite the adventure. Bring printed directions as you're going to loose cell service the closer you get. If you're headed to the group camp just turn into the camp ground, and proceed left. You'll go for quite a way but once you've reached the ford you're pretty much there. Yep, you've got to cross a creek running down the mountain side. It's tile bottomed so there's not too much to worry about. There were 8 of us that camped and it was pretty much a cold downpour (36 degrees) from when we arrived so it was a huge bonus that all the sites have shelters with space to put together tents, and put on those rainflys before staking them down. Having two picnic tables were great because they were under the shelters too. All in all I'll totally come back when I'm visiting my home state and I need a beautiful place to camp at a reasonable cost.
