Honey Bear has beautiful sites with Mountain Laurel on both sides of each site which gives you a nice wooded feeling and seclusion from neighbors. The creek that runs through the campground is beautiful with foot bridges that go across. They are in process of renovating right now. The bathrooms were spacious, but needed some TLC. It's definitely not a parking lot like some campgrounds that we've been in so we thoroughly enjoyed it.

The first thing thing I would say about this place is the location is great and super close to downtown which is nice. If you are looking for a place with a tons of amenities this is not it. There is only one bathhouse and it is pretty run down and not very close to a lot of the sites. I wish they at least had a few ports potties or outhouse around the grounds. I will say for a mountain campground the sites are easy to get into. C1 and C2 look to be the perfect spots to be but I am sure they get snagged up quickly. Any of the low numbered C sites would be nice. They sell wood, ice and have a coffee shop. They deliver the wood right to your site which is nice if you are getting a full load. I would suggest this place for people with with RVs so the lack of bathrooms and amenities wouldn't be a big deal.

One of these days, Yelp will figure out that a 0 stars rating is critical to the overall scoring process. Honey Bear should be thankful for the scoring process because the single star at least gives some advantage to the overall score. Let me begin by saying that the pictures do not match the grounds. Well, one of them may match hit the rest are seriously filtered. Turning into the grounds from the main road, there is a series of make-shift goat pens made from old wooden pallets. Each standing on its end and side-by-side attached however but not well enough for the one escape artist who is actually one of the better sites you will enjoy during your stay! To the right, an empty (seemingly also abandoned) commercial building that houses empty office locations. The old sign team still stands with no signage but one fluorescent bulb still burns at night. Further ahead, on the left are two open roll off dumpsters for trash. If that is not cause for rodents and other vermin, nothing is. Beyond those are travel trailers that others are being stored. The office is nothing near as clean as you are going to expect. The coffee house is closed but the only way you will know that is if you follow them on Facebook. Hope you have Facebook. The bathhouse and laundry facilities are also closed. We reserved a double site. One hour prior to arrival, we received a call regarding being transferred to a different site. When we arrived to the site, it was a small site and not what we paid for. I spoke to Marsha and indicated that we wanted a different location. We were supposed to be in B section however due to below freezing temperatures, we were moved to A section where they have a few frost free water connections. We paid and we are here! Let's make the best of it. Once set up and stabilized, we plugged i to the power connection which shorted out our power cord and our unit receptacle. Because she has no maintenance personnel, I had to test the power supply myself which determined that all three legs were hot. Serious problem especially when the temperature was 29°. I called to let her know what was going on and she did not have a solution. Our options were dependent on whether or not the grounds keeper was still on site. It is now after 8:00 pm. On Sunday. We had enough battery power for basic functions and enough gas for heat so we did it old school. Monday, we headed straight to a dealer to purchase a new cord as well as the receptacle. I called at 12:02 pm to verify if the supply had been repaired but was told that she was not at the office yet because she does not come in until noon and was unsure of the grounds keeper was there. I said it is after noon but no response given. It was after 1:00 pm before the supply connection was replaced and once we had our work completed, we were back in business. I hope you know some handyman basics because you are going to need them. Not once did she follow up to make sure our stay was going better. Not once did she offer to make good on anything. I spent my first two days of vacation working because Marsha does not work at all when it comes to maintaining the grounds, water, power and such. I will be furthering this with appropriate sites, social media outlets and local bureaus/chambers. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS LOCATION!

My family and I flew here from Oregon and decided to stay at Honey Bear for a portion of our trip in North Carolina. This place is amazing, the family that owns this camp ground cares so much about the land here and always gives back to the people in the community. This is truly a magical place!

One word that comes to mind when camping here is: hospitality. The lovely lady at the front desk was very accommodating to us and ensured we had enough firewood, and knew exactly where to find the things we needed. We loved our campsite (b-2). It had a fun dimension to it so our daughter could feel like she was exploring the mountain without leaving the campsite.

Great staff and coffee house on site. The road up is tight but doable. Very shaded sites. Was disappointed in C3, we were right next to C4, the photos and map indicated trees I between but we were right on top of them. Thank goodness we enjoyed our neighbors. Close in to Boone but you'd never no it when you are there.

This campground is old (circa 1970) but I rather call it nostalgic, it's an old school campground which means it's a little cramped and filled with a little bit of every kind of campers and full timers but I was able to navigate the steep entrance, small driveways and our tight site in my 41' Class A Diesel Rig without disconnecting my toad yes I have skills and a navigator in the seat next to me. The good far outweighs any negative comments I've read, this campground is nestled in a serene setting next to a mountain stream, there are lots of trees that filters the sun light most of the day. We stayed in site 77 a very level asphalt site that was long enough and wide enough to accommodate our Motorhome and our toad. Everyone here was extremely friendly and when the sun sets the sound of cracklin camp fires and the smell of burning hardwood fills the air. As far as ambient goes you'd be hard pressed to find a better setting it's only a few miles from town but a million miles from the distractions of the outside world. The not so good, yes every place has a few of them - the water pressure was horrible but fortunately my onboard water pump supplemented this so it wasn't that painful. The electrical supply was a shared distribution box and it was on the opposite side of the utility panel on my bus so you may want to bring an extension cord I had to route the cord under my RV fortunately my onboard 50 amp cord was just long enough. The sewer and water bibs may be located in closer proximity to your neighbor than to you and there were a few muddy spots around the site that we had to avoid and finally the most stressful part of our stay - exiting the campground back onto Hwy 105 it's like merging on to a super speedway with blind curves it can be a little intimidating. This is definitely a campground I'd book again, we loved the atmosphere and all our friendly neighbors and the staff was amazing too...

The men's bathroom had 3 showers, 3 stalls, 1 urinal and 4 sinks. There's a pavilion where I got to hear live music Saturday evening. Quite a unique experience !…read more I arrived and found my site to have a nice view of the adjacent cow pasture and the pastoral valley below. In addition, this site gave me a great opportunity to practice my leveling skills - usually I am limited to leveling 2-3 inches side to side and about the same front to back. But this site let me cut my teeth on a real all- American challenge - up to 11 inches side to side and 17" front to back! This is what Travel Trailering is all about! If the site wouldn't give a billy goat vertigo - you ain't camping! After I was all set with leveling the trailer, and my trailer tongue was ankle high and my rear kitchen chest high, I feared the fun was over. But then the rains came! Yes! No boring relaxing to worry about - all the runoff from the entire campground was funneled into a single site- and I was sitting in it! Gullies running diagonally under my camper appeared as I watched the downpour progress, giving me the pleasure of using my LevelMate Pro app to gently adjust the stabilizers as the gravel under each washed away with the rain. Luckily the only place I could park my Tow vehicle was downstream from the camper- effectively creating an effective obstacle to prevent the trailer totally washing away and into the New River, should it keep raining. The rain got less and less and for the rest of my stay the camper was pretty stable. B O R I N G, you say?? Wrong Grasshopper! Truly the Sh!tShow had yet to begin! As I was breaking camp, I noticed a guy with huge rubber gloves looking at my site and dragging a 200 foot sewer snake up the hill behind my truck. Concerned that he was going to scrape my pickup with the snake, I assured him I'd be out of his way shortly as I was leaving. He told me I was not impeding his progress and continued his work. So I quickly packed my griddle, chairs, hoses, electrical cords, etc and hitched up. Now I only had to remove my chocks and mountainous levelers and I'd be off toward other adventures. As I was raising the jack to settle my camper on the truck ball, my neighbor up the hill yelled that the flood waters were heading my way - the worker had gone ahead and done his work to let a sewage flood of biblical proportions head my way - the only path any liquid, water, or human waste, could possibly take. I tried to finish but was soon overwhelmed as the former rain gullies turned to fecal canals before my eyes. I had lost the "Beat the Turd" challenge as my levelers, chocks and shoes were flooded by the worker's brilliant timing! He watched as I battled to complete my exit while minimizing the damage. I asked if he knew where all that filth would flow and he said yes- that tried to fix it but it always ran through this site, so I guess he had to hurry to make sure I didn't miss the poop experience by leaving too soon. Props to him! If he had waited only 5 minutes to open the feces flood Gates I would have made it away cleanly, and I would not have the opportunity to spend my Sunday afternoon soaking my chocks, shoes, jeans, and levelers in a nice Clorox solution! So if you want a challenge and are tired of boring camping- you know where to head!!

They have a put putt course, and a very small outdoor in-ground pool, game room & a set of corn hole to play. They had a few events happening on the event board inside the check-in area. Small store inside to get the essentials. My biggest complaint as was others, is the WiFi. We didn't have any signal at our site and it got slightly better as we went towards the entrance. We had to go in town to research anything. I don't except amazing signal but enough to look up a few things here and there. It served the purpose for the weekend. It was clean and free of debris on the campsite it self. The sites are very close together so be conscious of that. We didn't spend much time at the site so it didn't bother us.

The result is 0 parking spots and no space for anyone to comfortably enjoy themselves. The fire pits all blow smoke at each other and the tents fill up with other tent sites fire pit smoke. Noise issues: Want to go to sleep at a reasonable time? Too bad. Two nights in a row a bunch of drunkards were blasting music and having a great time from 9pm until 3am. Don't plan on getting much sleep if it's a busy weekend. Barking dogs, screaming kids, loud music, and noisy people well into the night. Safety concerns: the main small beach near the domes where everyone plays is littered with boulders and sharp rocks in the water. Maybe nothing can be done about that. However open inspecting the rotting wood steps leading to the water I found an actual sharp-to-a-point metal spike sticking straight up out of the wood. Luckily I was able to hammer down with a large rock, however that was an impaled foot or worse waiting to happen. There's lots of exposed rebar and it's generally unsafe. Considering how many kids and drunk adults loiter in that area, it's only a matter of time until someone needs stitches. No wonder they have you sign a liability waiver to be here. Lack of facility maintenance: The door locks on most of the bathrooms don't work. The hot water in the showers is barely functional if at all. The wood ramp to the shipping container showers becomes very slippery when wet and poses a safety hazard. There's a wasp sanctuary under the deck as well. Several adults and children were stung this weekend simply walking up the ramp to the bathrooms. With all the money this place is making is there no time to fix and maintain these things? Last but not least, THE CAMP DOGS: a gentleman came to our group and asked that we put all our dogs on leashes (despite them already being on leashes at the time...) and then allows the "camp dog" which is a large black and white husky to roam freely. This dog is an A**HOLE. It constantly bothers people's camp sites and tries to pick fights with other dogs. Our dogs were personally harassed by this dog when he came to our campsite and started eating our dogs food. Then tried to start a fight with our dogs. Then tried to BITE MY WIFE. I had to chase him off every couple hours both days. This dog should not be allowed off leash however the campground owners don't have enough self awareness to do so. All in all, it's been fun over the last few years, but this place has grown too big for the owners and staff to properly manage. Won't likely be coming here again, and we'll be sure to let everyone know what it's become.
