As a citizen of Boone for the past 25 years, it has been and will continue to be my honor and privilege to pay taxes for this treasure. I come here to meditate, pray, commune with nature, God, and my loved ones who have passed on. While it's an easy drive, I choose to leave my doorstep, 3.7 miles away and make the journey on foot. That is quite a challenge, but well worth every inch.
A side note: Before your journey to the top, make sure you check the park hours and dates of operations first. As a longtime citizen, I must say I've taken for granted, my access to the knob. Even when it was closed for the winter, I journeyed to top and let myself in through the loosely chained fence. In fact, every time that I've done that, I found at least eight to ten who had already reached the summit before me. Yesterday was one of those occasions. It was an amazing journey; the views were crystal clear; I could feel God's presence. As I left, I encountered a gentleman wearing a baseball cap and denim shirt. He was not God. He was an angry resident from nearby and he yelled at me for trespassing. Before I could even greet him he put his camera in my face. I assume this was because he wanted to turn me in to the FBI. So the next time you're at the post office, if you see a most wanted picture of a bald, chubby man in tight runners clothing, extending the classic, two fingered hippie's peace sign: That's me. If there is a reward and you feel you need to turn me in, please consider donating the money to the Howard's Knob County Park and perhaps a portion of it to a therapist who could help manage that poor man's anger. read more
