River & Earth Adventures - Float A Rama 2017!!

Our trip was an afternoon float down the Watauga River, which was a very tame stretch of water,…read moreclean and cold. We had two adults and a couple of young boys (8 and 11), and the guides were good sports with the splashy-splashy and the water gun distractions during the slow parts. There's a rock outcrop just after the put-in, and we stopped and jumped off. This is a no-frills rafting operation, and I really appreciated that. The focus is on getting you to the launch point, helping you enjoy your trip down the river, and then getting you back to your car. (I think they also offer a morning trip that includes lunch, and maybe an all-day rafting option.) They're not trying to make money with add-ons like gear and accessories you don't need (although they do sell water and those sunglasses strap thingies). The raft and the oars were of good quality and in great shape, so no worries there. The vests did have a bit of a funk to them, but nothing that got in the way of enjoying the trip. They even took some photos with their waterproof camera as we floated down the river and then shared them with us online for free. I can't guarantee that you'll also get this treatment, but it was refreshing to get a few nice shots of our day for no extra charge. You can tell that these guys enjoy what they are doing. Just the kind of small business I'm happy to spend my dollars with. Safe and fun, without any surprise fees.

Robbins Pool At Broyhill Park

Robbins Pool At Broyhill Park

I want to start off by saying that this review was originally intended for Broyhill Park only, not…read morethe pool. That said, I've been to the pool a few times, so I will touch on that, as well. I first learned of Broyhill Park through the Town of Blowing Rock's recent Instagram post highlighting the place. It looked beautiful on pictures, and it prompted me to want to want to take my dog on a walk there this beautiful, sunny, summer Monday morning. We have lived in Boone for 3 years and have found that we are still continuously finding new places to venture to and take walks. I Googled the address for Broyhill Park, I think it was 1504 Laurel Ln., and my GPS took me to the Blowing Rock equestrian center. I drove in circles looking for the park and even stopped off to ask several folks on the side of the road. No one happened to be from the area and therefore couldn't direct me to the location. Finally, just as I was about to leave, stumbled upon the park. It is right next to the Robbins Pool and across the street from the Glenn Burney trail access. Phew! This little park was cute and sweet and provided a calming, inviting atmosphere this morning for me to walk my dog and rest on the park bench. I would certainly recommend others consider take a stroll here. Regarding the pool: I think I went a total of 3 times last summer. Once for a child's birthday party and the other times with my own nieces and nephews. Anyone can use this pool, provided they pay the small fee required before entering. This fee varies for Blowing Rock residents vs. those who are not. Regardless, it isn't expensive. To me, too, it's certainly worth it given it is the only outdoor pool I am aware of in this area. I grew up in a town where outdoor pools are rampant and available in many neighborhoods, so this was my first experience attending a true community pool that required payment. That said, I really liked it. The kids love it, too! I believe the pool is heated, since the outdoor weather in the mountains is really scorching hot. 10/10 would recommend visiting the pool, the park, the nearby trail, and the town!

This is a beautiful park that is perfect for enjoying a picnic or a good book. I took my dog there…read morefor walks and it was perfect for that as well. (I was kind of confused by the signs that indicated that no pets were allowed that were posted right beside the doggie bags for waste disposal?) There is a relatively short path around the small lake, more of a pond really. That makes it a perfect destination for people who want to enjoy the outdoors, but aren't sure of the weather or may have physical limitations to the more challenging hikes. There is also a community pool located across the street from the park and it looked fantastic. Not only did they have full lanes for swimming, but they had water slides and other splash park water features.

Honey Bear Campground - Our campsite

Honey Bear was our home again this past weekend. It was a nice weekend of glamping tucked away…read morenearby Boone. This was our second stay and we really enjoyed it from the nice wooded winding road up the mountain to the fresh air all around the camp site. This time, sadly our stay had some issues because the line from the well to most of the water was out. That meant no showers, faucets, or toilet flushing without a bucket in the tank. We were okay with it, for the most part, since we brought hand sanitizer, extra bottles of water (brushing teeth, rinsing things off, etc.), and it is camping after all. The second night was even better when the sinks and toilets were working like normal. The staff communicated about this issue the evening before we were supposed to arrive and did give us a discount on firewood, as a result of the inconvenience. Our checkin was great though. Abby was AWESOME! She greeted us with enthusiasm, humor, and was very welcoming. She even gave us local recommendations for things to do. We had arrived just in time for free root beer floats and vanilla lattes in the campground coffee cafe. We put in our order for firewood and were off to our "Group Camp Site" tent area in the more private area away from the rest of the sites. Each night, we wandered around the campgrounds. Plenty of RV hookups. It seems like it's about half tent sites and half RV sites. We even wandered off the trails and found the area where they host haunted trails during the Halloween season. What a surprise! Beautiful starry nights and funny to see ducks and geese wandering around the grounds. Saturday night, they showed a movie, but we didn't get back in time to watch "A Bug's Life" on the lawn. Nice little community. We had our own space to have good fun and a late cookout, but also were conveniently located to cars, the coffee cafe, not too far from the bathhouse, and a nice little walk up the street to a petting zoo.

Everything was great here! The staff were very friendly and accommodating. They went above and…read morebeyond. As well as the camp site its self it was well kept together and very nice.
