Here's the skinny - it's an indoor Bouldering gym (no harnesses) opened by two Climbers who wanted a better spot to cultivate their passion for climbing. It's built in an old warehouse, with a pretty swanky coffee shop as the front, and the gym out back. There's nice seating inside, and a little bit outside, and plenty of parking.
The gym itself has a variety of wall faces and inclines, a fitness/weight training area, a grip/climbing training area, uses the V-system for ratings, and has routes marked my hold colors. They also update routes often (I'm told), and are always open for feedback. The only thing on the Climber's wish-list I *didn't* see was top-outs, and the space just isn't built for that.
As for the climbing - well, I've been traveling quite a bit for a few years now, and gone to every gym I've passed by, and after a while it starts to be pretty easy to tell between meh, just good, pretty solid, and terrific.
To sum up, I felt welcome coming in, got my shoes on, and climbed one route. Before my feet touched the ground after flashing it, I was grinning like an idiot. Why? Because it was a V0, an intro route, and it was super, super fun.
A lot of folks think a V0 has to be a ladder with no personality, others don't know how to set anything easier than a V6 and get confused when people say it's "Not a V0." The setters at Center 45 though know their stuff, and while the lower routes will be challenging for beginners, they'll also be fun and interesting while you're at it. And their mid-range (V1-V2) game is the best I've seen in years.
At some gyms, you can Boulder all week and never do anything more complex than a hand/foot match. Here though, I did all the routes from V0 right through V2, and I did knee-bars, bicycles, hand-foot matches, mantles, heel-hooks, one small dyno, and all sorts of goofy tricks that most setters don't put in enough routes. The setters at 45 are the best I've ever seen at putting complex techniques into relatively easy routes, which is inspiring and darn near magical. After not using any of these climbing moves for far too long, it was blissful to swing up and down those walls until I couldn't grip a door handle anymore!
An oddball note, the bathrooms are huge :P it used to be... a bread warehouse I believe? So some of the amenities are built for a much larger staff. That said, roomy bathrooms for you climbers :)
They also have club teams, competitive teams, regular events, and climbing classes. Plus shoe rentals, of course.
A friend of mine is from Boone and told me about this place, and introduced me to one of the owners. If you go to the front desk of the gym, chances are you'll meet Aaron, but if you talk to that nice quiet guy encouraging you to go for that next hold or try one more route, you may just find that he's the other owner, Chris! read more
