Not reliable. 2 times consecutively, he pulled a no show/no call. I thought it was weird he said he would come on Saturday. Then, when he was 2 hrs late with no call, I called him and he said his kid had soccer. I thought I'd give him another chance thinking he just didn't want to say no when he said he would come on Saturday. He knew we really needed him bc my kiln was not firing and I needed service before the kiln tech could come. And so I thought he didn't want to say no. So we agreed to him coming Monday at 9 am. At 9:45, my husband called and he said (get this) he was late because he inhaled suds while in the shower. He said he was on his way. At 10:30, still no show, we texted him and told him to forget it. He never replied. During this, he wasn't answering his phone and his voicemail was full, too. And these were not even the first time something like this happened. Once before, a couple years ago, he came to give an estimate and during the estimate he fixed a small problem and said he would send us his estimate for the whole job. Then he couldnt come back to do the job bc he hurt his foot. Even though we now had to find someone else to do the entire job, we sent him a check anyway for the small repair he did during the estimate because we felt bad he had been in the hospital. He seemed like a good guy back then. But now I think maybe that was not true either. Anyway, I would not recommend. I don't like leaving bad reviews. But someone else one time posted a review about a company I was just about to sign a contract with. That person saved me from making a huge mistake. Fantastic service. Was quoted a fair price to have a dryer circuit redone in my home. John came in on the day work was supposed to be done, took a second look, and explained how they didn't actually need to run wires, etc, they would only need to change a few things on the breaker and the outlet itself, saving us about $700. The original electrician I had called had told me the wire was too small and we would need to replace it all (without actually taking anything apart to see the size of the wire under the cabling) They easily could have taken advantage of someone like me who knows little to nothing about electricity, but instead, they did the right thing and earned themselves a life long customer. read more

Wow. VanBortle Electric is amazing. We lost lights in our garage and reached out to see if they could come out. They walked us through what the problem might be rather than coming here and charging us money for something that they could help us with over the phone. They patiently talked us through and explained what the issue might be (a very simple three-way switch issue that I never knew about) and voilà our lights were working. Needed to upgrade from fuses to breakers. This company was referred to me by a family member. Called and made an appointment... Never showed up, never called. I called again (my mistake) and made a second appointment. Again, NO CALL, NO SHOW. If you can't do the job, SAY SO, if you're not interested in doing the job, SAY SO. Not showing up and not even calling is beyond rude. Ended up calling a different company who came the same day, gave an acceptable quote, scheduled and completed the job the next week. After having a problem at our house with the electricity and getting no response from our previous electrician, I set out to find another one. Upon speaking with John on the phone, we agreed on an appointment time. He called when he was running late but no problems there. Our problem was quickly corrected (luckily) and he fixed a few other minor issues too, under the service charge for the original problem. These guys are outstanding. John arrived with Alex and they proceeded to troubleshoot a problem we have had for years with lights flickering, switches not working, and power mysteriously going out in the attic. Many electricians have looked at it, but none ever were able to successfully diagnose it much less fix it. The guys were different. John called me over several times in the few hours they were here to show me what he was doing. He even was able to replace a night light working in an original 100 year old switch. It's been two days now and all the problems we were experiencing seem to be resolved. No more flickering lights, power drops, or strange switch problems. Couldn't be happier. He also started to diagnose an issue in my daughter's room with a bad power strip. Unfortunately, we ran out of time to fix that, but he plans to come back to address it in the near future. VanBortle Electric has my respect and definitely earned a five star rating from me for responding quickly to my call about only having power in the front half of my house. They quickly determined that one of the two feeds from the pole was dead, made a temporary repair to give me power in the whole house, and told me to call RGE. The lines from the pole had been rubbing against a tree for so long that the tree was growing around the lines to the point that the lines broke but didn't fall. RGE repaired and rerouted the line and VanBortle was back first thing the next morning to undo the temporary fix and finalize the repair. I consider the charge reasonable and the work professional. read more

Turns out the main switch needed replacing along with the outdoor mainline as water was getting into the box. I had an arcing issue with the main 200 amp breaker in my load panel. I requested a quote through Yelp from Van Bortle Electric and a second local electrician. John at VanBortle Electric emailed me back immediately and asked me to call him directly. I called and spoke John at VanBortle and he requested that I text photos of the breaker box and a close up photo of the main breaker. After John received the photos, he immediately called me back and said that the main breaker and panel were obsolete but he would try to find the required breaker. John called back within 10 minutes and said that he found a replacement breaker, gave me a price and said that he could send one of his employees out to replace the breaker. The employee came arrived within an hour and replaced the breaker. The employee was very knowledgeable and thorough . The problem main breaker was replaced and the problem was solved. Price charged was very fair and was LESS than the quoted price. I would highly recommend VanBortle for any residential electrical work! By the way, the second electrician that I contacted wrote an email back to me stating that he would have to send an employee out to look at the problem and then give me a quote. That could be scheduled 2 weeks from today at the earliest. If I wanted them to make the repair, that could happen 3 to 4 weeks LATER at the earliest. Total of six weeks to repair! VanBortle Electric quoted and repaired the electrical problem within 5 hours of my original contact!!! read more
