Overall, very satisfied. The selection of plants and the appearance and quality of them was good. Prices seemed comparable to other non-corporate/big brand plant stores. Everyone working here was super friendly and helpful. They left me along but when I had a question they were more than happy to help. Personally I like this approach but if you're into the whole "being offered help by someone different every 30 seconds" thing you will probably think they are all rude. But they're not - just approach someone and ask for help :) I will say... this place is very... boring? sterile? minimalist? basic? looking. Some nurseries really try to make it beautiful and fun looking at they didn't do that here. That's not bad... the plants are what matter, but it's just more fun to browse and shop when things are arranged beautifully and creatively. I absolutely love this place. The staff members are friendly but also very knowledgeable and passionate about plants. They have a great selection of flowers, veggies, trees, shrubs etc. it's peaceful here and I love strolling all the aisles to see what they have. Some things are a bit pricey but for the overall experience I think it's worth it especially since the staff is very knowledgeable and willing to answer any questions you may have. Wow! First time I have been here but I just wanted to say that the staff here is really helpful and kind. The first employee helped me find tomato cages and check out. He explained their reward card to me and was so nice. The second employee said "have a great day," as I left and a third employee gave a small waved and smiled as I was leaving. Honestly, if I lived near by, I'd be here all the time, just for the amazing interactions. Great value on plants and huge selection. They have a better variety and selection of plants and trees in the area. And the workers are very knowledgeable and helpful. I love that there's a great nursery close by that is not a box store. My dad used to go here almost every week to add to his garden. He was always digging up his plants and adding something different. At 90 i think that is what kept him alive. Once he bought 75 rose plants here. All different colors but they looked beautiful. Another time he bought 50 bottlebrush plants. He was always adfing small plants here and there. And he bought his cypress trees here. After 40 years they looked great. They always gave him good advice on how to plant his new plants. Staff were always so patient with him , which is the reason he kept going back here. I think it was more the friendliness of the staff is why he kept goung back. I've mistakenly avoided this nursery in the past and regret it! This year I popped in looking for an unusual plant; not only found it at a reasonable price, but picked up my garden veggies at the same time. Pricing was surprisingly good, some items less than at Home Depot, and the quality was amazing. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. Very underwhelming visit. Drove 2 hours from Sacramento and customer service was horrible. No greeting, no one asked if I needed help and not to mention rude customers who bump into you and don't even apologize. Huge collection of plants. We only really wanted to find the indoor plant section and it was hard to find so we had to ask - the worker enthusiastically led us to the way. Plant prices are decent. Pretty disappointed! I bought a fig tree. Not a cheap plant at all. Two stems died within a matter of one month, the nursery refused to replace the plant. As a last resort I decided to replant it and realized that the roots were VERY cramped in there and the water had no chance of getting to the roots and very likely that's why it's died. From what I can tell they sold me a tree that had to be replanted immediately to survive. Very sad. read more

As far as nurseries go, Van Winden's Garden Center - with its highway adjacent location - didn't knock my socks off but today, less than 6 weeks after purchase, the dwarf fig tree that looks not much different than a stick is suddenly bearing two tiny figs. My excitement over that fact has likely brought an enthusiasm to this review that previously would not have existed. Wandering the outdoor spaces at Van Winden's, the only thing that caught my fancy were fig trees, all of which looked like a similar variety of stick. I'd selected one before a worker here pointed me in a different direction given what she knew about fig trees, their size, and their growing patterns. In hand I'd held a fig tree that actually looked like it might produce something sometime in my lifetime but after speaking with her I swapped that one out for the Violette De Bordeaux Fig which looked like it might not produce anything ever. I had hope but not belief and now I'm joyous. Van Winden's staff were helpful but perhaps not the garden-wonks present in some other nurseries; It was on me to look up my planting zone. The indoor spaces (including the area where one pays) at Van Winden's appeared to have some unique gift items but it's covid times, so I endeavored not to linger in those spaces. This nursery is a good-enough distraction if you're in the area and itching to purchase something for your garden. I'd not go out of my way for Van Winden's and I've definitely enjoyed more inviting, colorful nurseries, but if I wanted a second dwarf fig tree you can bet I'd make a b-line back. read more

I came here looking for roses and a certain nectarine tree, but ended up buying an 6 foot kaffir like tree, which I have been looking for almost 10 years. I posted my tree on FB and now my friends from San Jose wants to make a trip to Napa to buy one of their own. This place has quality selection and the price is worth it. I will certainly come back for a magnolia tree, nectarine tree, and kumquat tree. If you are reading this, please ignore the Karens and complainers who gave this place a 1 star. During this pandemic we should be grateful that this nursery is even opened and keeping us safe. I live in Vallejo and the nursery near my home is closed and has been closed. How do you expect people with 9-5 jobs to be able to shop at your facility? Seems to me you could increase your business if you were open either an hour earlier or stayed open an hour later, especially in the summertime. Ah I love this nursery. I mostly shop for houseplants rather than outdoor plants. Their houseplants are in good shape and very reasonably priced for an independent nursery. From what I can tell, they don't tend to carry anything too unusual, but they do get a good flow of basic stuff. I pop in frequently and do often find something I'm eager to add to my collection. The staff have always been very courteous, literally never had an issue. I like that they are not very pushy and I can just walk around without a bunch of people asking me if I need help. But they always seem to have quite a bit of staff onsite, so it is easy to find someone when you do have a question or need help. read more

I left my heart in a garden center... is that weird to admit? I have a very little to no green thumb but when I bought my first house I needed to do some landscaping. My dad brought me here a few years ago to help pick out some plants for the backyard. He loved gardening, plants, and flowers... I wish I acquired his sense of gardening. Most (if not all) of my plants are from Van Winden's and their service has always been up to par. I have visited this place multiple times in the past year or so. We have bought a ficus Audrey indoor tree, a lemon tree, a lime tree, a ginkgo tree that was so stunning we had to return to get it's sister the ginkgo bush for our backyard, 2 olive bushes, a rubber tree, etc. The outdoor selection is incredible and the indoor selection (while smaller) is just as great at much more reasonable prices for their health and size than the areas near my home. My only issue is the ladies that work the cash register. Every time we are there, they are always incredibly irritable. They always make you feel like you are bothering their incredibly important work. I called in once asking to see if they have something specific and the lady that spoke to me was flustered because she didn't know. I asked if there was anyone that may know and after letting me know how put off she is by helping me, she handed me over to someone that worked the "field". The "field workers" are AMAZING. At any given moment, I can point to something and ask anything and they know the answer. We tell them where we want to put something and they will tell us the best shape and/or if a better varietal is better. They are incredibly friendly and just literal plant people. So much love for the plants. Such kind souls. So yeah, knowledge and advice from the field people are amazing. Customer service inside is trash. Mind you, this poor experience were all pre-COVID. read more

Staff seems highly stressed which has translated into rudeness on more than one occasion. Everything is overpriced. The "spend $100 and get $2.50 off our already massively inflated margins" is the most condescending attempt at a customer loyalty program. Saving grace is that I had a gift card. Today one of the employees coughed on me while I was on my way out. I don't think it was intentional, but seriously? Be aware. It's a pandemic. Why are you even at work with a cough like that? Nice plants, however. I can't say the same with the people working there. I've been there too many times as I live down the street. Every visit that I had, they were never nice. I can sense that they only have to help me cuz they don't want me to just take the items and not pay for it. I've tried to give them chances to be nice and this last time, I spend $150 and the older lady was just so snotty that I can bring my business elsewhere. Mid-city nursery is bigger and nicer. Van Winden's Garden Center is a hidden treasure, tho it is in plain sight off Highway 29. The parking lot is small, but there is ample parking on side streets. They have an amazing array of statuary, as well as fruits and vegetables. They regularly have gardening classes. Their rose selection is stunning. The owners and employees are especially helpful. They have reasonable prices. Van Winden's can help your garden grow. There are tons of books, tools, a wonderful local, family-owned business. Plus they do landscaping.
