Van Van is a hidden gem tucked away in Naples, FL, and it's truly a charming and intimate Cuban cafe that deserves recognition. While the dark ambiance and lighting might not be everyone's cup of tea, the excellent service and delicious food more than make up for it. We started our experience with two cafe cubanos, and they were a delightful way to kick off our Cuban culinary adventure. Rich and robust, they set the stage for what was to come. The star of the show was the chicken churrasco with moros and boiled yuca. The chicken was tender and perfectly seasoned, and the combination with moros (black beans and rice) and boiled yuca was a match made in heaven. The only downside was the yuca being a tad sour, but it didn't overshadow the overall fantastic taste. Speaking of sides, we decided to sample a variety, including yellow rice, black beans, sweet plantains, boiled yuca, and jalapeno bites for our vegan companion. Each side was a burst of flavor in its own right, and it added a lot of variety to our meal. The sweet plantains, in particular, were a delightful sweet contrast to the savory dishes. Last but not least, we tried the shrimp al ajillo with moros and tostones. The flavors were bold, and the combination of the shrimp, moros, and tostones created a memorable dish. The slight sourness and saltiness I mentioned added a unique depth to the flavors, and we found it to be a pleasant surprise. Overall, Van Van delivers a genuine Cuban culinary experience with a cozy atmosphere and top-notch service. The minor issues with sourness and saltiness were overshadowed by the overall deliciousness of the food. My Husband and I thoroughly enjoyed this restaurant last evening. The ropa vieja I had was exactly the way the friendly waiter described, with perfectly roasted beef in savory brown sauce. The fried sweet plantains were terrific. My Husband lechon asado was the star of the evening however. The marinated pork was incredibly tender and savory and yet had been finished on a grill to give it a terrific crispy crust. Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside all flavored wonderfully with the tang of the mojo marinade. The sides of black bean and yellow rice were also plentiful and delicious. Best cuban food we have ever had! My wife and i order a couple of mojitos to start off which were very refreshing. Afterwards, we received our fancy appetizer tostones rellenos following the recommendation of our server Myriel, and wow that ground beef was just out of this world. Complimentary basket of toasted bread with a very nice pico de gallo for dipping. Usually the ingredients are raw. Here, all were lightly cooked in quality olive oil. Our Mango Nojito mocktails were loaded with extremely fresh and juicy mint. A slice of dried lime added a hint of smokey lime flavor. The mango flavor of the drink itself was not too sweet. Not overpowering. Just simply mango. A thin strip of raw sugarcane was in the glass. Two main courses. The Pollo de Valle - chicken breast stuffed with garlic-sauteed mushrooms and Manchego cheese. The mushrooms could have been a dish unto themselves. The really were sauteed in garlic. One large chicken breast, rolled, cut on a diagonal and placed one piece vertical and the second piece on its side in a sea of creamy spinach sauce. The sauce was just the right combination of spinach taste and cream. The sauce was flecked with tiny micro greens and little purple flower pieces. Masa de Cerdo was a dish of large, generous portions of juicy seared pork on a bed of slightly sauteed onions. Sides were black beans and platanos maduro. The plantains were done perfectly, juicy with some crispy edges, just like my abuela used to make. The beans were not adorned with extra onions or other ingredients but they had the depth of flavor that you know some other stuff went into a likely long simmer to create this final dish. For dessert, we shared the guava infused mousse cake with mascarpone guava ice cream. I can see the Cuban roots of this dessert in the guavas (cascos or paste with a strip of jelly in it) with side cream cheese that I'm used to having at home. Very nice transformation to the mousse cake and ice cream. The attention to unexpected details and creativity... sugarcane, extremely fresh mint, diagonal cut and placement of the chicken, flecks of micro greens and flower pieces in the creamy spinach sauce, the full-length thin slice of a plantain split in two to make a single plantain chip for the Masa de Cerdo dish, guava mousse cake, mascarpone ice cream, transcended this entire experience to a higher level. The décor is amazing. Large wall size vibrant color and black and white images evoking Cuba and Havana. Unique Cuban music play list in the back ground. Nice sized welcoming bar. A perfectly made fresh and strong colada and Café Americano closed things out with a great finish. When I saw the word fusion in the name of the restaurant, I wondered what other cuisine that they were fusing with. I don't think it's referencing a fusion with another cuisine. I think we might be talking about fusion of Cuban cuisine with an extraordinarily creative and brilliant chef.
