Peak croquet culture. Less touristy, traditional cuisine. Entertaining staff. 10/10 recommend.

When in Amsterdam don't forget to eat this iconic dish at this iconic place. This is the place to have a kroket, period! It is a small bar/restaurant perfect for a quick bite! Excellent fresh orange juice as well as the ham sandwich. I was here for a quick bite and ended up eating a bit more than that. They surprisingly accepted American Express!

The best croquetten in Amsterdam and the Dutch ladies are hilarious to watch and listen to! As they interact with customers and each other. The croquette is delicious when dipped in mustard 5/5. Limited. Seating and expect a line if coming during lunch or the weekends. Do not be discouraged by a line, your taste buds will thank you once you bite into the croquette! Always a must stop when visiting Amsterdam. Authentic and HEEL LEKKER! DANK U WEL VAN DOBBEN!

Hard to give 2/5 especially with the raving reviews but my experience was totally underwhelming. Van Dobben is a classic Dutch sandwich bar in Rembrandt Square, especially lively in the nighttime. Sat in around 10 PM as the only guests. There is only 1 English page in the entire menu. All the favorites are condensed onto the 1 page. Ordered the croquette without bread, roast beef, roast pork with gravy, and the peanut sauce. All were kind of plunked on the counter in front of us when served. Unless you order your meat dipped in gravy, expect cool temperature sandwiches. Croquette (€ 3,15) - better than the sandwiches. Potato-paste in the inside. Tasted OK, not better than the same thing at FEBO. Roast beef (€ 3,45) - worst of all. Really excited for the flavor and texture as its pink in the middle. Tasted stale, unappetizing texture. Bread tasted like average grocery store grade. Really disappointed with this one. Roast pork (€ 3,30) - dipped in gravy so at least the bread was soaked and it had better temperature. Did not get great taste from the pork or the gravy. I want to give Van Dobben a second chance but I really regretted eating here. But hey, at least peanut sauce gets 4/5.

If you're going to get anything in Amsterdam come here for the croquette or Kroket as the Dutch call it. Pretty much everyone here spoke Dutch which lead me to believe this was a good local secret. It's like a Dutch diner. Cheap and delicious. The croquette sandwich is definitely Interesting. Cover it in mustard and just go for it. I would say it's a once a trip kind of treat because it's so heavy. It's basically a fried ball of Ragu with meat on white bread. I also had the American sandwich. Which is raw beef creamed with herbs. Not exactly my type or something I would ever eat again. But when in Amsterdam! Be loud and just sit down and order with the ladies behind the counter as they are busy as hell. Bring cash and they don't take credit cards.

    The spread.

It's like a tiny New York City diner was in Amsterdam. Little meat sandwiches. Croquettes. White or brown bread. Pretty classic dutchy.

I'd give this place a solid 4 stars if I ate meat, but since I am jealous of meat-eaters and lamenting over the limited, yet surprisingly plentiful vegetarian options, I am going to go with 3. That does not mean, however, that I would avoid this place. Quite the contrary, in fact. Van Dobben has this authentic feel to it. I saw grown ups reading the morning newspaper while drinking milk and enjoying their croquet sandwiches. The menu was available in multiple languages, including Japanese. The staff all spoke Dutch and there was this low-tech feeling with paper guest-checks. I throughly enjoyed my vegetable croquet. As recommended by others, I dabbed on a generous helping of house mustard to make it taste even more awesome, and it delivered. Best part - it didn't break the bank. I am glad to have discovered a new lunch spot.

One of my favorite places in Adam. Food is great and service incredibly friendly. Just perfect after a few rounds of beers or quick snack in the afternoon. Tartar Sandwiches are the best as well the Roast Beef and Kroketen of course. It's an alcohol free place. Soft drinks available as well as several coffee options.

My wife located this place and we met up with our daughter there after she dropped off her rented bike nearby. If you walk to the far end of the park from the Rijksmuseum and turn left at the street that borders the park there, the restaurant is about 2 blocks along there. You enter into a small waiting area and proceed between 2 counters. The best way I can describe the process is that it was like an ice cream shop in the U.S. They had glass displays showing what was available for meals - varieties of pasta, etc. You could select from those, or I think they had salads also. You place your order and then grab a table. A server will bring the food out when it is ready. Seating was a bit limited, so there could be a wait for a table. We arrived just before they got busy, though. They have about 5 or 6 small tables on the ground floor. If those are full, a fallback option is to ascend the spiral stairs up to a low-ceilinged loft. This is where we ate. The chairs here were fine but the tables were quite small - almost like a high coffee table. It wasn't hard to eat off these, just a bit different than usual. Also, if you are much over 6 feet tall, the ceilings will require caution. They can probably accommodate another 3 - 4 small parties up there. Everyone liked their food, which definitely had that 'prepared fresh' vibe. I got the pasta and had no trouble finishing it. I'd definitely consider eating here again were I back in the area.

Mostly semi Italian deli items. I had ravioli, stuffed mushroom, roasted veggies, rocket and generous parmigiana sprinkling. They have tables so we could eat there. Since we already had made plans to eat elsewhere, we made sure to come back before we left the city. It's only five minutes from my hotel anyways! Come to find out, the line wasn't as huge as it would seem. They were holding people outside because the inside was actually ridiculously warm. So they were holding people outside to minimize the amount of people inside. The wait was actually less than 10 minutes. The first thing I noted was...wow, everything is so cheap here! I'm sure that's a partially a function of them basically being cash only (no Visa, MasterCard, American Express accepted, so I don't know what would be accepted), but also because it's Amsterdam and everything is way cheaper here in general. Ordered the Cortona (€4.90), Calzone Margherita (€2.80), Pizza with Grilled Vegetables (€2.80), Ricotta Cannoli (€2.80), and a Large Classic Tiramisu (€2.80). Goes without saying that everything was fire. That Cortona sandwich was so well-made and tasty! If I was ordering something like this back in the U.S., it would easily be 3x the price. Staff here are super friendly! They keep the line churning real quickly despite the high demand. And despite how many orders they take in, they move very quickly. I have honestly no clue how I have never come here before considering the amount of times I have been to Amsterdam. It's definitely going to be one of those spots that I will keep coming back to, that's for sure.
