Whenever my dad's up in Edinbugh for work he always jokes about how we 'mysteriously' end up in here having a coffee or a glass of wine... I just seem to gravitate towards it it's that good. It's named after the family that run this Edinburgh empire; they have a handful of other food & drink places dotted around the city, but this is definitely their best if you ask me. I've never eaten in the formal sit-down restaurant upstairs, I've just peeked in whilst on my way up to the loos - which, by the way are immaculate and always have lovely Molton Brown moisturiser for you to use after you've washed your hands. My mum always says you should judge a place by their loos and house wine, and this place definitely ticks the loo box. On my first trip here, i couldn't control my inner child and ordered one of their ice cream floats. I don't care what anyone says, I'll be ordering these in here until I'm so old I can no longer feed myself, it was that good. Think luxury italian chocolate and vanilla ice cream blended with oreos and topped up with Coke. Not great if you're a dentist, but so worth the sugar content!!! On my next visit I was feeling slightly less like a five year old, and so I ordered a glass of white wine. The second box in my mum's theory can now be ticked off as well - it was ice cold for starters, and for once it actually tasted like the flowery descriptions that everywhere insists on writing under the name of it on the wine list. Obviously, you have to eat something in here, otherwise it defeats half the prpose of coming somewhere so nice. The cakes are always changing around, but if they have caramel shortbread on display in the chill counter then you could do a lot worse than order that.

Nice enough place to come for a coffee or tea, plenty cakes, pastry's & biscuits on offer and filled rolls ect. Breakfast rolls available and a limited lunch menu that will satisfy the hunger for a while. The restaurant area is a little rough in some areas and just need a good bleaching or deck scrubbing. Even though staff where polite and chatty and that goes a long way.

We decided to pull up a pew outside Valvona and Crolla on a particularly pleasant sunny afternoon in Edinburgh. My Yelp-esque nature got the better of me and I popped inside to get the drinks, making my other half feel very ungentlemanly indeed. But needs must. The food itself is mainly Italian, and all sounded delicious, although somewhat hard to pronounce for those of us who aren't fluent in the lingo! We were only having coffee and a cake, and there was plenty to choose from. I chose a latte and my boyfriend had a classic cappuccino, but the cakes were the hardest part to choose, for sure. Since I was the one choosing, I opted for the lemon tart to share, which was absolutely gorgeous! One of the best desserts I have ever had, my only regret is I wish I had got one all to myself! The bill racked up almost £10, which wasn't incredibly cheap, but not overly expensive either, and the coffees were first class, made the way real authentic Italian coffee should be. Divine.

I had lasagna and my friend had a chicken dish. Both were full of flavor. Then we decided to treat ourselves to dessert since they are famous fir their gelato. Wow! Dessert was even better than the meal. Not sure when I will be back to Edinburgh but I will definitely return here if so.

The guy behind the…read moredessert counter was nice but the rest of the crew seemed rushed and not to happy to have us eat in with just desserts. I ordered the Haggis Ravioli as it was on my list of delicacies to eat in Edinburgh but the rest of our orders were the sweet stuff. We got the Affogato served with espresso in a moka pot which was a first time for us. The crepe and the chocolate caked served with gelato were even better. The main restaurant has Italian caricatures and murals which was a nice touch. The secondary dining area (The Hispaniola) had feels of a Spanish pirate ship which was odd for an Italian themed restaurant. The latter was the site of the Rutherford's Bar (1834-2007) frequented by famous clientele and then was transformed into a Treasure Island themed restaurant. Food was really good. I'll even come back when in Edinburgh. Service could use a little work though.

We tried on our first week in Edinburgh and failed, but were able to make reservations 3 weeks out for our last night in Scotland, and we are glad we did. Pork cracklins were a bit hard and crunchy, but everything else was perfect. We had fresh bread and langostinis for starters, along with a smokey whiskey cocktail, the Smoked Indiscretion! For mains we enjoyed the poached Cod, and the Pork with Barley. Service was very good, and wine selection was extensive. Atmosphere was loud with music and locals' chatter in the bar below, but dark tables and heavy wood panels made it a perfect place for a couple celebrating 3 weeks of travel. Highly recommend a visit to the Devil's Advocate, if you can book a table in advance.

But they call these lessons, "character building," apparently. No matter, the Devil's Advocate is worth the search. Located in an old Victorian pump house halfway up (or down) Advocate's Close, the Devil's Advocate is known for a killer whisky shelf of more than 300 different bottles from various distilleries across the Highlands, Lowlands, Speyside, Campbelltown, the Islands, and Islay. I finally sipped on a 15-year Tamdu that has convinced me to keep a bottle at home. Then there's the Clydeside 2024 Limited Edition Cask Strength that was wicked impressive. The bartenders are class at making and serving seasonal and regular cocktails that have their spin and character. My wife enjoyed gin-based cocktails such as the Clean Slate (with St-Germain, citrus, and sugar), Rose Garden (with Yellow Chartreuse, Cocchi Rosa, apple, lemon, and mint), and Bee's Knees (honey and lemon). I went full speed ahead with the scotch cocktails, which are essentially classics with a scotch-substituted twist. The Double Shot is an Espresso Martini with Dalmore 12 in addition to Kahlua, espresso, and demerara -- quite smooth without being too sweet. The Scotzia is a Negroni with Fettercairn 12, while the Boxcar is a Sidecar only with Aberfeldy 12. We enjoyed the bar for a few hours, watching the bartenders make magic while sipping on cocktails, while listening to 80s pop tunes. A great evening indeed.
