Cozy little cafe and Italian restaurant in the new town section of Edinburgh. Came in for a take away seeing as it was the only place open for coffee and I seriously needed a caffeine fix. Had a macchiato which was rocket fuel strong just how I like it. Bought a couple pastries to take home but they were rather stale and unappealing. Good coffee but not so good baked items. Counter service was kind of cold and aloof for this typically friendly city but prices are reasonable. Good for coffee and I would like to come back to try the Italian fare an update my review.

After my less than stella pancake experience yesterday I was losing hope for the Edinburgh pancake scene. Then a friend suggested Caffe Centro as her go-to pancake emporium of choice. So, girding my loins, I set off and was rewarded with the best pancakes yet. I only wish they had more variety of batter and toppings. But this is an Italian cafe and not IHoP so that can be forgiven. They also do a mutha*quack*ing Breakfast Calzone. I WILL BE BACK FOR YOU BREAKFAST CALZONE!

Caffe Centro is a very nice Italian cafe on George Street. It is often packed on lunch time, which is no surprise since their food is pretty good. You can get anything from soups, sandwiches and salads to pastas and pizzas. Or if you are an early bird you can get a good breafast as well. However, I had my eyes set on some dessert as I had just had lunch elsewhere. I wanted to cry from delight as I scanned their dessert menu when I saw that banana split was on the menu. I love it, it's simple but delicious IF done correctly. N.B. there are some establishments in Edinburgh that include canned fruit in banana split which is just wrong, wrong, wrong... I am glad to confirm that Caffe Centro knows how to do a banana split properly. My bowl consisted of banana, vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and a drizzle of chocolate sauce (see picture). That's all that is needed. And it was amazing :) Next time I might try one of their other desserts as there was plenty of choice.

    The food I didn't eat

This was perhaps the worst meal I've had in a very long time. You know when I don't eat everything on my plate something is wrong. And I left a great deal on my plate. The Caesar salad was a regular mixed salad with what tasted like Asda creamy italian dressing. No anchovies. The pasta dish - tagliatelle centro was a mess. An overpowering burnt taste. A really strange consistency to the sauce, and over cooked pasta. It was just bad. And the decor (or lack thereof) - boxes on the floor, refrigerators and other appliances sitting out in the open. The patio out back which actually looked nice was closed. There was only one other table during our dinner and now I know why. I don't like to give bad reviews but this was such a horrible experience. If you're looking for italian food - keep on walking.

I had lasagna and my friend had a chicken dish. Both were full of flavor. Then we decided to treat ourselves to dessert since they are famous fir their gelato. Wow! Dessert was even better than the meal. Not sure when I will be back to Edinburgh but I will definitely return here if so.

I ordered the Haggis Ravioli as it was on my list of delicacies to eat in Edinburgh but the rest of our orders were the sweet stuff. We got the Affogato served with espresso in a moka pot which was a first time for us. The crepe and the chocolate caked served with gelato were even better. The main restaurant has Italian caricatures and murals which was a nice touch. The secondary dining area (The Hispaniola) had feels of a Spanish pirate ship which was odd for an Italian themed restaurant. The latter was the site of the Rutherford's Bar (1834-2007) frequented by famous clientele and then was transformed into a Treasure Island themed restaurant. Food was really good. I'll even come back when in Edinburgh. Service could use a little work though.

We tried on our first week in Edinburgh and failed, but were able to make reservations 3 weeks out for our last night in Scotland, and we are glad we did. Pork cracklins were a bit hard and crunchy, but everything else was perfect. We had fresh bread and langostinis for starters, along with a smokey whiskey cocktail, the Smoked Indiscretion! For mains we enjoyed the poached Cod, and the Pork with Barley. Service was very good, and wine selection was extensive. Atmosphere was loud with music and locals' chatter in the bar below, but dark tables and heavy wood panels made it a perfect place for a couple celebrating 3 weeks of travel. Highly recommend a visit to the Devil's Advocate, if you can book a table in advance.

But they call these lessons, "character building," apparently. No matter, the Devil's Advocate is worth the search. Located in an old Victorian pump house halfway up (or down) Advocate's Close, the Devil's Advocate is known for a killer whisky shelf of more than 300 different bottles from various distilleries across the Highlands, Lowlands, Speyside, Campbelltown, the Islands, and Islay. I finally sipped on a 15-year Tamdu that has convinced me to keep a bottle at home. Then there's the Clydeside 2024 Limited Edition Cask Strength that was wicked impressive. The bartenders are class at making and serving seasonal and regular cocktails that have their spin and character. My wife enjoyed gin-based cocktails such as the Clean Slate (with St-Germain, citrus, and sugar), Rose Garden (with Yellow Chartreuse, Cocchi Rosa, apple, lemon, and mint), and Bee's Knees (honey and lemon). I went full speed ahead with the scotch cocktails, which are essentially classics with a scotch-substituted twist. The Double Shot is an Espresso Martini with Dalmore 12 in addition to Kahlua, espresso, and demerara -- quite smooth without being too sweet. The Scotzia is a Negroni with Fettercairn 12, while the Boxcar is a Sidecar only with Aberfeldy 12. We enjoyed the bar for a few hours, watching the bartenders make magic while sipping on cocktails, while listening to 80s pop tunes. A great evening indeed.
