I love libraries! This is a large library and is the most convenient Irving Public Library location for me. I really appreciate their drive-through book drop for when they are closed and the huge free parking lot. I also voted here once. The staff are super friendly and helpful! They have helped me locate items and put stuff on hold for me. Jennifer recommended a book to me that I ended up loving. I like that the holds are right inside the front door and that you can do self-checkout. I haven't had the time to do any of the many activities or book clubs but I enjoyed participating in the 2024 adult reading challenge. They had interesting and diverse reading recommendation lists for the prompts and I got to read some wonderful books that I would not have otherwise read. read more

In San Francisco, I live 1.5 blocks from my closest library, here in Irving, it is maybe 4 blocks. And this is a lovely walk along the canal. This branch is about to go through some renovations (as of 3/19/2024) there is a lot of tarping around the entrance, not really sure what is planned. The have the holds right up front, and the check out machines are a bit more modern than in SF. They have several small meeting rooms that are first come first serve. On some nights they are open until 9pm. The hold shelf is only valid for 1 week, not 10 days like SF, and I believe there will be late fees, but I haven't experienced them yet. The website is a little wonky, why can't libraries figure this out? - ahh... non-profits, gotta love 'em! read more

I'm here all the time. I'm a library dweller. This library is very quaint and comfortable to do all things needed to enhance that noggin of yours. There's booths, tables, couches, quiet rooms (2, now), study rooms (2-hr limit, I was told that if I was the only user of the room I could get kicked out automatically if a group of more than 1 wanted the rooms, boo). Above all else, there's a kickass view of the Canal. How relaxing, when you are staring at a PC screen for hours, taking a gander at the scenic man-made water-body can be quite therapeutic. Next to the VRL is Java Me Up, which is a small local coffee shop that I like going to during some study breaks or just to chill. Support small cafes, for the win! I do recommend coming by if you're in the area. I'm glad I still live very close to this lovely resource. Now if they had a great boba place right by here I'd die happy... :P read more

I am obsessed with this waterfront library! It's an easy walk along the riverwalk in Valley Ranch but theres also plenty of parking nearby. They have outside book drops if you need to come by and drop off books when they're closed! The library is also connected to a cute coffee shop that seems to always have people meeting there for coffee dates or hangouts. I love getting work done here and grabbing a seat by the giant windows. They have a great WiFi and lots of seating. They also have quite a few do-it-yourself kiosks in addition to librarians so I've never had to wait in line to check out books. Everyone is very cheerful and happy to help you! read more

This is a library with a good variety of materials and books. Out of the three Irving libraries, this is my favorite. It has nice natural lighting and a welcoming open space. I love being able to place books on hold and go pick them up. What I am most thankful for about this library is the kind customer service. Stephanie has assisted me twice and she was so courteous and welcoming both times. I am new to the library so she connected me with available classes and programs for my little one and helped me with a book replacement. Other librarians are quite friendly too, but Stephanie is the best. read more

I haven't set foot in a public library in years. Let's just say that Amazon and bookstores love me and I should own stock in both, because my home library is expansive.. Regular price, $1 bargains, you name it. I googled the closest public library, and, lo and behold, one only a few miles from me! The Valley Ranch Library is set off MacArthur, behind the vet on Cimarron. Luckily, there were several signs, otherwise it is hidden from the road. Beautiful brick building with a coffee shop attached and ample parking spaces. When I walked in, I was hit with the wonderful smell of books. I was greeted warmly and the employee helped sign me up for a card. Easy-peesy. For the first 3 months, I can check out 5 books at a time; after that, 20 books at a time. I just started laughing when she said that--I mean, I am an avid reader, but 20 books in 2 weeks? I wish I had enough time to read all of those! The library is large enough, with seating throughout. There is also a "Quiet Room" enclosed in glass. I must admit I was a little worried when I walked in and witnessed two men, sleeping on the comfy chairs. Ummm, kinda weird. The library is in a nice area, so where did these homeless men come from?? Seeing that, I would urge parents to keep an eye on their kids while there--it definitely creeped me out a little. Anyway, I found some interesting books and headed to the check-out area. Just like at a grocery, there are self-serve computers to check-out books yourself. Here I am, a grown woman, staring at this contraption as I continually attempted to scan the books. Nope...nope...what the hell am I doing wrong?! I small child, maybe 8 years old, walked up to the kiosk next to me, and quickly checks out his books and leaves. Talk about feeling like an idiot! Finally, I figured it out and went on my way. Very nice, clean library and the kiddos section is also well-stocked. Highly recommend. read more

Really nice neighborhood library. They have a decent collection of books, and the staff is quite helpful. I used their study room once, and really liked it. You need a library card to reserve it, and you can reserve it for two hours, but they let you stay longer if no one is waiting to use it. I wish the chairs in the room were a little more comfortable, but that's just a minor issue. The best thing is that this library allows patrons to eat and drink inside. A coffee shop is conveniently attached to the library for people who want to grab a quick snack. Other notes: if you lose your card, you can get a replacement for $2. They have a cool summer reading program going on where you get a prize for reading four books. read more

This library has awesome story times for kiddos!!! They really get quality programs to come in nearly every day of the week where kids of different ages can participate in engaging, energetic and educational activities. The aesthetics of the place are nice as well. The children's section is build to look like it's on giant pirate ship structure which kids love of course, and there are lots of windows to enjoy the incredibly relaxing view of the canals outside. The kids love to watch for wildlife through the windows and take a stroll outside if weather permits! I also love the fact that they offer free WiFi to all guests and have a wonderful family-owned cafe connected to the library called Java Me Up. Very good coffee and they do offer almond milk which is important to those with allergies! My only wishes are that they would offer private rooms to take calls in, as I often work remotely here, and that they would offer children's toys and activities to use when story time is not in session. Those would be amazing added bonuses that we've enjoyed at some other local libraries. Still we come here about once a week and are so, so thankful for the great programs they put on!! read more

All of the Irving libraries are great. What makes this one stand out is Java Me Up, the cafe. It's pretty great that I can come grab a coffee and a snack while studying. This library is small, but there is plenty of space to sit/ study/ get work done. It does get busy and crowded, so come early if you want a good spot. Also, if you have a library card you can reserve a private study room. They're not soundproof but they are nice! There is also a nice selection of books; my mom especially loves that there is an area of Korean books. My one biggest complaint is that one of the librarians is really really loud - shocking, considering her occupation. But seriously, I could hear every word she said quite clearly and I was about 30 feet away from her. I have no idea who she is, but I do know how well her voice carries. read more

This library has recently been renovated-- with more space, more tables, more books, more chairs, etc. There are two spacious quiet study rooms in this library, which are convenient if you need to get some work done. The library also hosts reading time for kids and has ESL conversation classes every Thursday nights that are open to the public for free. There is also a coffee shop that's adjoint to the library (Java Me Up) that sells coffee, tea, soda, juice, sandwiches, and desserts for a relatively reasonable price. However, the only down side about this library is its horrible internet connection and speed. I can't express how SLOW and frustrating it is! The time it gets to even get to 'google.com' takes about 2 minutes, and for most job applications or school applications that use java script or some old school program, you can't even load.. If you're looking to study or read a good book, this is your go to library. However, if you're looking to spend your day doing online job applications or school applications, avoid this place like the plague. read more

This is a lovely little local library branch. Unfortunately, it is staffed by the most unpleasant personnel I have ever encountered at a library. Each time I visit, I watch with shock the rude treatment that is delivered to each person who dares to walk to the front of the line for assistance. You will find that it is not just one staff member treating their customers in a rude manner, it is each and every staff member at this library branch. Do yourself a favor and go to a different library branch in Irving, or just purchase books at half price books or on Amazon. read more

-Got a card in my mail to come make a library card. So, I decided to check out the spot and resources they provided. Exterior/interior: Clean with tables, booths surrounding the exterior of the library, 2 quiet rooms, and study rooms you can reserve for a 2 hr limit (I think). The coffee shop Java Me Up is connected to the library, which is great for a much needed pick me up espresso or bite to eat. The quiet rooms have about 3 tables and some single chairs with that attached extendable table on the side. Not a bad alternative, when there isn't other tables/booths available. The ceiling to floor windows in these rooms have a view of the canal and nature. Nice, caking feature. Other than making my library card, which was a simple process, and using a quiet room, I didn't explore other resources. so until next time! just wished it didn't close early on Fridays at 6:00pm. read more

I am giving four stars as people who come here are noisy and loud. Children keep running and jumping as if they are in park. The staff tries their best but can't manage. Also, they need to improve a bit in their variety of programs. I stay nearby but I prefer to go south library as their programs appeals to me more. read more

I'm at this library again and the teenagers are running through here playing hide and seek and per usual the Librarians ignore them. Although there are at least 6 or more of Librarians here today. Additionally, if an adult is on a professional call (and whispering I might add) back in the corner of library where there aren't any people or very few people (usually adults out of respect) will ask if it's ok if the take or make call and will get approval from those around them...But all of sudden Librarian(s) appear to pop up from nowhere just to tell them they can't talk on the phone. However, they allow this place to become a freakin zoo once the kids get out of school! Oh forget about complaining as they do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. They just say the area of the library you're in is the teen area, so it's going to be loud. Hide and seek and running is permissible because it's the teen area!!‍As if that should matter. Too bad for me this is the closest library to my house. I wish there was away to give zero stars because the Librarians here deserve a very poor performance ratings. read more

The staff is very unpleasant. They suspended my library card for no reason. The book which i borrowed has crayon marks on last white page.When i retruned the same book, the lady is saying the marks are new and i am resposible for that. I asked them if they have any previous notes on this book about the crayon marks.She said they dont maintain that. I wonder what happens if someone checkout the same book. I was new to library and not sure i need to check each page before i borrow anything. I am single lady and have no kids..how can i draw crayons on suspense thriller novel.This is absurd. read more

I have never used this library without a hassle. They didn't accept a state-issued ID with my address on it as proof of residence. They won't link my account to my daughter's so that I can pick up holds for her or monitor what she checks out. I have never received a smile or a helpful suggestion. If you're looking for friendly folks, or people who want to help you discover the joys of reading, look elsewhere. If you're looking for endless red tape and frustrations, this is your place. read more

A great library with a large parking lot, great kids area, and a stellar cafe right next door. Only downside is it can get crowded and it can be difficult to find a seat sometimes. Though... is that really a downside??? People reading more is never going to be a bad thing. Plan ahead people! Get there early! read more

Unpleasant lady at front desk. I've just moved here, waiting on my house. so living in an Extended Stay with my 4 children whom I homeschool. Library is a big part of our lives. I have a friend at the same hotel who took on a statement stating how long they have been staying at the hotel and was promptly given a card. Not me. She wouldn't even listen to me. I had my statement showing my husband has been in Irving since March. No deal. At least have the decency to hear a person out. read more

I think this is one of the worst libraries I have set foot in.Having lived in many parts of the country I can write a long long list of what is wrong with this library.Where do I begin? Staff..like some others have said they are rude,tired disinterested and plain clueless. Never go to them for help. The computer systems in the library itself are not user friendly. The renovation was a huge joke,it had nothing to do with increasing the number of books ,shelf space is bad most of the tall books lie on their side ..so if you are tall you really have to bend down or sit on the floor to look for the books. I went in looking for a book on Artisan bread baking..I did not find 1 on the shelf because this library had none!NONE ..look at the selection* itself they have very few books on any subject. I do realize not every book is available at every library but at Valley Ranch they have a terrible terrible selection! You know the other thing that is weird about these guys you have to go in to renew* the library card every year?Really Why ?Asked the staff ..who had no answer.Even if you are a home owner living in Irving they make you go in person EVERY year to renew.In this day and age they don't need to do this.Address verification is easy so is home ownership verification.Find out what other libraries are doing and figure it out! The library needs to start charging for overdue materials and make some money,take that money and put it into buying new material. They seem to have 1 or 2 copies of books ,popular young adult and kid books are never available here without a long wait list. Noise-Oh my god this place gets noisy esp right after school and after 7 pm. I have on numerous occasions complained to the staff and spoken to the lady in charge of buying new material about a lot of my complaints,so far no action has been taken.The staff either pass the buck or just agree with me and leave it at that . Overall they need a serious overhaul. The only decent thing here are the private rooms and the seating near the young adult area.
