    A happy salad.
    Matthew U.

I had to come back and re-review this place. It had been a few years since I had last visited this location. I had been frequenting one in another area and thought it was about time to come back here. After a day out with the family we needed to refuel ourselves and weren't in the mood for fast food. Sit down options are limited and to find one that is not crowded these days is hard to come by. This Valley Dairy location is in a small strip mall off of Scalp Ave in the Richland area. Kind of a hidden gem as this strip mall sits downhill and you kind of just roll by it. Add to that the fact that most people attempt to equate this place as an establishment that older people frequent and you get a mostly empty restaurant to yourself. We showed up and had a minimal wait to be seated and once we were seated we had our menus in hand. Menus right now are basically disposable and condensed. But you still get a good sense as to what there is to offer. Before I get into the food I want to go into the service. I loved our server. She made it that much more of an experience for us. She was wonderful, she took care of us on the spot and made sure we had everything we needed. She joked around with us a lot, it made for a great experience and I have to say added a little lightness to the day. I am sure I will touch on this subject again as I go into our meal. For my meal I went with the Pot Roast Hot Open-Faced Sandwich. Basically it is their shredded pot roast on top of some sourdough bread served with a side of either mashed potatoes or fries. Then top it with a nice serving of gravy. I went with the mashed potatoes and of course I told them to top everything with gravy. I also ordered a side salad to start the meal with. This is where the server comes back into the picture. From our conversation we had earlier she did a little ribbing. She made a smiley face out of the salad. I laughed when she put it down and she joked a bit more. Of course I snapped a picture and when she saw that I was cutting up the bigger pieces of the salad she did a bit more ribbing. Of course we all laughed about it, but I always do this with a salad, then I dug into it. As for the sandwich, amazing. I am a sucker for some shredded pot roast, even more so when someone else is making it. I enjoyed every single bite of that that thing, to the point where there was nearly nothing left on the plate. I am glad that I gave this location another chance because how else would I have been able to have such a great experience. Our server made this all possible.

This is supposed to be a breakfast sandwich

If this item is on your menu, what would you call it? A breakfast sandwich is what was ordered. November 29th at about 10am in case you care. Not really worth ordering here again.

While visiting the JOHNSTOWN area visiting family, we always have at least one trip to Valley Dairy! This restaurant has been in business over 50 years. As a child, I was told stories about "Ice Cream Joe" who started making Valley Dairy ice cream a long long time ago. To date, this is still the only place that I've found "Rainbow" flavored Ice Cream ! I believe it's just vanilla ice cream with some coloring added, but it's fabulous! Very creamy and tasty! I live in the south now, they have something called "Superman" ice cream but that is some type of sherbet. Nice try, but when I want the real thing, I head to JOHNSTOWN! ;) The restaurant is extremely clean, has tables and booths for seating. There's a separate counter for the ice cream treats. Tons of flavors of ice cream, there's a flavor for everybody! Scoops, sundaes, banana splits, they have it all! They have a large freezer for gallons of ice cream to go - they even make ice cream cakes! How good does that sound!!!??? The menu is typical American Fare - chicken, chopped steak, salads, sandwiches, burgers, Fries, etc. A local favorite (which I truly miss living in the south) - is French Fries with gravy!! So, no trip to JOHNSTOWN is complete until we have French Fries with gravy! They also have turkey and roast beef sandwiches with gravy. Again, pretty unique - you aren't going to find that just anywhere. Hummm...are you starting to see a gravy pattern here??? Oh, and yes they do have sweet tea here!! So excited to see some fresh brewed sweet tea here!!! :) My family enjoyed our valley dairy dinner and treat! We were seated right away, quickly greeted by our waitress, our order was taken and the food was delivered in just a few minutes. Great service! If you are looking for a retro (no frills) restaurant with the option for some ice cream - definitely give this place a try! My family will continue to visit Valley Dairy for many many years!!

You might as well smear it right on your hips! Ah the memories that I have for this place, it's been around longer than I have and we did not go out to eat often when we were young, but this was one of my Mom's favorite places to take her five children for a meal or an ice cream treat. As I got older my friends and I loved nothing more than to stop in for fries with gravy or ice cream. Valley Dairy is a glorified Friendly's, at least to me it is, they serve a full breakfast, lunch and dinner with homemade soups, chili, sandwiches, entrees and some of the best hot meat loaf or turkey with gravy meals or sandwiches, but what I really love about them is their homemade ice cream. They make the very best maple walnut ice cream loaded with big pieces of walnuts and they will even serve it in a dish covered with their famous and exclusive warm walnut syrup, hello yum! So many flavors of ice cream and sherbets and to not miss a trick they have a full and flavorful line of frozen yogurts. If you want a banana split made the way it should be or one of the best root beer floats, grab a seat or take it to go and their orange blossom is so good with orange sherbet and vanilla ice cream blended together, although do beware as sucking on this puppy does induce brain freeze if you enjoy it too fast! On my most recent trip to Johnstown, I just had to stop in and relive a few memories, they have not changed too much and they still use paper place mats with advertising for the local businesses. I've been thinking of pumpkin a lot lately as I love anything pumpkin so much, it makes my favorite pie, cookies and Valley Dairy has always been number one when it comes to pumpkin ice cream. Each of us were planning on only having ice cream and ended up finding other things on the menu that we just had to have first. I, of course, had to have my fries with the rich brown gravy and I shared my hot meat loaf sandwich which would not taste any better if you made it at home. I also ordered the firecracker shrimp with a Thai chili sauce, which killed me to share since they were as good as any I have had. For my dessert I had one scoop of pumpkin ice cream and another scoop of maple walnut with the warm walnut sauce and it is still the very best there is! Noticing they had pumpkin pancakes on the menu and mentioning that I had never had them and how much I so do love pumpkin to a yelp friend ( brian S. RI.) I stopped by in the morning for breakfast and they were some of the best pancakes I have ever had with so much pumpkin flavor, cinnamon and spice, do ask for the warm maple walnut sauce to cover the tops! They do sell their ice cream in tubs to go. They now have coffee buddies which are small cakes filled with mousse and topped with heaven, like the key lime cake with key lime mousse and coconut, the red velvet with a cream cheese mousse and the chocolate peanut butter cup with a rich chocolate cake for the top and bottom filled with a peanut butter mousse and topped with broken peanut butter cups. Hello, which one do I want to take home? All of them! Talk about decadent! Two of my favorite stories of Valley Dairy, Mom and her girlfriend's used to belong to Weight Watchers and after we all got on the bus for school they would walk for miles and miles and end up at Valley Dairy as their reward! Second, my youngest brother once ordered the "kitchen sink", I forget how many scoops of ice cream it had and a zillion toppings, but it was enough to feed an army and he ate it! Ah the memories... Oh BTW, I did notice kids meals are a buck!

Delish!!!! Really good all the way down to the bacon!

Upon arrival, we were confused because its in the bottom of a large building that looks like a hotel/apt building. The building is a 55+ over alt building but the restaurant is open to the public. The food was really good and affordable! Most of our group ordered breakfast but a few ordered the open faced hot roast beef sandwich which looked amazing and they said it was good. I ordered an omelette which came with home fries or hash browns and toast-the portion was pretty large for $8.99. Unfortunately we were all starving and didn't take any pictures. But, I would recommend this little hidden gem if in the area and you want a good homestyle meal.

You take to the food delivery apps in hopes of something that might be able to feel that hunger void. I wanted something that would fill my void and I wouldn't think about food for the rest of the evening. I kept going through the apps, pizza, wings, fast food, fast casual, then I saw this place. Graystone doesn't have a huge menu, but what they do have on the menu covers just about every niche you would want. Appetizers, dinners, sandwiches, the usual normal stuff to find. I made sure that I went over the whole menu before I was happy with my decision. I got both an appetizer and dinner, just so I could taste the two sides of the menu. For the appetizer I went with the fries with cheddar and bacon. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. You can tell that the fries are frozen and you can tell that there wasn't really much thought put into this than to add it to the menu as a quick appetizer. It says cheddar, and when you think of that you think cheddar sauce, it's not. Simply a handful of cheddar thrown on top with some fresh cooked bacon. Wouldn't be bad with the cheddar, but it basically hardened over the fries. Making you to really have to get in there with your hands and get messy with it. When it came to my dinner, I was not disappointed in the least. As soon as I saw meatloaf on the menu I did not have a second thought about it. I will always go with the meatloaf, especially if it is my first time trying the place. When you order a dinner you get your choice of two sides and a dinner roll. To keep the meal "homestyle" I went with mashed potatoes and stuffing for my side. Of course they made sure there was gravy. The meatloaf itself was a huge piece, one that easily takes up half of the plate. This also isn't one of those skinny pieces, on top of it taking over half the plate, it is like a double slice or triple slice when compared to other places. I added the gravy on top and I was off. The gravy definitely added to it and combatted the dryness that you encounter sometimes. I really enjoyed the edges, it had that hardened crunch to it that, when combined with the crumbliness, gave you different textures. It was a decent blend of spices, peppers, and onions giving this meatloaf top marks. The sides, let's talk about them. The stuffing, probably not homemade. A bit salty, kind of having some of those same flavors as the meatloaf. The potatoes, I want to think they were homemade. I did come across some lumps, which made me think that. With the gravy, of course it made it a connected meal. The bun, frozen, store bought, but it was a nice way to clean the plate from gravy. Overall, it was a great meal and was definitely feeling. A note as to where this is located in the Johnstown area. It is street level on the senior high rise near Walmart and Richland High School. Most people wouldn't know there is a restaurant there, but you should try it.

I know what you are thinking, why am I giving this place, a small chain, such a high rating. Well, give me a minute and I will tell you. As it continued to rain and tired of having to figure out something new and exciting to make at home we ended up here. The parking lot wasn't full in the least and we were able to walk in and be seated right away. I do have to say that the inside felt extremely small, maybe that was because of the restrictions in place for the time being. Our server, I'm not sure if I got this right or not, Danny was pretty amazing at what he did. He greeted us warmly, took our drink orders and gave us a minute to browse over the menu. When he returned with our drinks he was more than ready to take our order. How do I know that he was good? He took our orders without writing it down, and when the order showed up every single thing was correct. Absolutely everything that was ordered by us was right in front of us. He was the happiest and most patient person I have come across in a very long time. You deserve a raise my man. I had ordered the Fish and Chips meal which came with a side salad. The side salad was more like a mixed green salad with a lot of the toppings I didn't expect from a chain. It was a good portion to serve as a side. As for the Fish and Chips, spot on. Three modest sized strips of fish that were battered to perfection. The battering really made it hold up against the tartar sauce. The fries, basic, but a nice compliment to the fish. I did walk out of here satisfied. And with such a nice server it made the experience so much better than expected.

In all the time that I have lived in and around Johnstown, I had never been able to make it here…read more On a recent trip back home I met my sister and her family for a dinner. I'm glad I finally did to check this place of my to try list. From the outside, it looks like a typical hole-in-the-wall bar in the Johnstown area. I had no idea where parking was because every time I drove past here I would be doing it at a pace I couldn't see. I was happy to see that there was ample parking behind the street facing building. Entry from the parking lot takes you up stairs or a zig-zagging ramp that looks fairly new. This area is also connected to an outdoor seating area, can't really call it a patio. Or, you can enter from outside and take the stairs up into dining room. This is a seat yourself establishment. Once you are seated, you are greeted and given menus. What an extensive menu it is. The amount of items on the menu, if you haven't been here before, can be daunting. It took me a few minutes to just give it a once over. When the server came back around to take our drink order she asked if we needed a few more minutes, yes, we did. When she returned I was ready to go. I ordered the Pickle Chips as my appetizer and the Howler as my main. The Pickle Chips were served with a side of ranch for dipping and they were amazing. Perfectly coated, not too much and not too little. Dipping in the ranch cooled them down just enough to be enjoyable. Now, the Howler, is kind of an experience. The Howler is one of their signature burgers. Half-pound patty cooked to your liking. The set toppings on this burger is bacon, choice of cheese (American Cheddar, Swiss, Provolone, or Pepper Jack), meat sauce, and a fried egg. You also can choose to add lettuce tomato onion and pickle. For mine, I went American for the cheese, lettuce, onion and pickle. There really wasn't any need for condiments as there was already so much on the burger to give it flavor. It almost comes off as either a breakfast burger or a chili cheese burger. Although I did as for medium, they overcooked it a bit. What was a nice addition here was the side. You can go with the traditional fries or go for one of many that don't seem to have an upcharge to it. Tater tots, slaw, applesauce, or nachos and one item for an upcharge, onion rings. I went with tater tots. Overall, this was an enjoyable meal. Our service was impeccable. Atmosphere was lively.
