Brought my BMW F800ST here. It had a stalling issue I described to them where the bike would sometimes die at highway speed. They couldn't figure it out but decided I had some vacuum tube recall and fixed it for a couple hundred dollars. Yet my bike's behavior continued. I brought it back in because they had not fixed the issue. Without asking, they just unhooked something inside of the bike, hoping that would fix the problem, and charged me another $150. I was too naive back then to ask them why I should pay them for something they didn't fix, twice, and randomly disconnected. ---- Later I discovered that all the issue was, was a failed fuel pump, which was properly diagnosed by a bike mechanic who doesn't even work on BMWs. I'm sure they're fine with older BMWs with carbs but I wouldn't bring them anything newer. read more

I'm a little tardy on this review because it comes from my experience with Dana and Mark about this time last year. Better late than ever...Picked up a 1985 K100 LT that had been cut up into a pretty cool Cafe Racer of OfferUp. The first thing I wanted to do was to get the bike into Vallantine to have it given the once over to ensure it the custom build was done properly and safely. Drove the k100 in and picked it up a few days later and as it turned out the front forks had been reinstalled backward and everyone had a good laugh about that. The bike was corrected and tightened up and I was good to go. Rode the bike for a year while I waited for another k100 custom build to be done by a professional and now I'll be taking that into Dana and Mark to have them give that the a once over as well. Great guys. Educated me on my previous bike when I picked it up. Gave me good, safe suggestions on other adjustments that I could make myself. The cost of the first bike was more than reasonable based on the fixes and changes that needed to be made to help keep me safe on the road. - See you guys soon! Thomas H read more

Mark and Dana always do a great job of fully diagnosing any issues, contacting you promptly to run through the details and costs. I've never been able to stump these guys, even when bringing in ancient bikes with serious gremlins. I commute / travel on one of my BMWs (year-round), putting thousands of rainy miles on it, and these guys keep it in perfect working order. They aren't cheap, but nothing BMW-related ever is. I had my first bike towed here to lower the suspension. The day I picked it up was the first time ever I rode a bike outside my motorcycle class (which was 4 months ago...). It's probably not hard to imagine how a short tiny newbie would handle a CBR for the first time... yeah as ugly as it could possible get to. Although the shop was closed, Dana kept me accompanied for another 20 mins. In the end he had to go. So he offered to exchange cell numbers and asked me to check in with him when I make it home. The 3 mile way home is a blank spot in my memory, but I appeared to be at my home safe by the end of the day. I was completely exhausted and forgot to call. The next morning I got a call from Dana: "You're still alive?" Great! These guys go out of their way to help you. They give the honest recommendations and provide explanations without you having to ask. Btw the suspension job was done in the most proper way. (It's been four months now. Last August VMW installed a helicoil for a head stud in the engine case of my classic airhead BMW. When I left the bike with them I inquired about whether they would somehow capture the swarf when drilling the case to prevent it from getting into the engine. They assured me that yes of course, they would not let the swarf get into the case. They completed the job and all was well (I thought). Fast forward to this past weekend when I decided that I should drop the oil pan to ensure that no metal bits fell into the case. I'm very glad that I did this because there were several large bits of metal in the oil pan. These were the bits that were too large to get past the coarse screen of the oil pickup. When I removed and cut open the oil filter it was full of tiny bits of metal swarf (see photo). All those bits of metal in the oil filter passed through the oil pump. BMW makes robust motorcycles and my engine is probably not damaged. But I don't know for sure... My point is that this never should have happened, the mechanic should have either 1) captured the swarf as the case was drilled or 2) drained the oil and dropped the oil pan before drilling and then flushed any metal bits out before reassembling and adding fresh oil. They knew this, I can't imagine why they took a shortcut and didn't do this job properly. read more

I purchased my 99 R1100RT from Ride Worst BMW a little over 3 years ago. It was not a good experience. The salesman was deceptive about the condition of the bike. The battery was shot, the brakes were worn, and I discovered 3 bare wires that could shorted out, or caused a fire. My riding friends who own BMW's all told me, "If your bike ever needs service or to have something fixed. You take it to Mic Vallantine and not to the Stealerships in Seattle and Fife. "and they were right. On Thursday, April 26, 2012, while I was riding to work at 6:00am on 405. My bike lost all power. The engine just quit running. I was barely able to merge from the HOV to the outside shoulder without getting killed with the traffic here. Lucky for me this happened just a couple of miles from my house. So I was able to get home. Hook my bike trailer up to my Jeep and recurred my bike from the side of the freeway pretty quickly. I shamefully drove my bike to work on the trailer like it was a carnival ride. Later that morning I made some calls to a few shops including Mic Vallantine. I could not believe the response I got. The "Stealerships" pounced on me like a pride of lions on a wildebeest. They wanted to change me for a diagnostic tests, Tune it up, changes the fluids, adjusting the valves, checking the compression, leak down test, etc..... The onlything missing was the prostate exam and MRI. Estimated cost was almost $1000 Then I remembered what my friends told me, so I called Mic. What a great guy. He told me to bring my bike down around 1:00pm or so and he would be able to have a look at it. I am thinking, "What, you don't have to do a prostrate exam and MRI like the guys at Ride Worst? Mic's experience with BMW motorcycles is like nothing I have ever seen. I described my problem and he knew right where to look. No hassles, no quasi experts telling what I need, and no BS. At 3:45 that same day Mic calls to tell me not only is my bike fixed, but he also sync'd my throttle bodies, adjusted the cables, and the bike runs better than ever. All in 1-1/2. I could not believe it. Plus it only cost $136 for everything. While Ride Worst wanted around $300 to tear everything apart and give you a best guess of what they think the problem might be. $300 - 400 in parts and another $250 in labor to put it all back together. $136 vs around $1000. You do the math. Bottom line is if you want your BMW Motorcycle fixed right and fixed right the first time. Take it to Vallantine Motor Works. Mic is a great guy and has earned my business and respect for life. It is rare that you meet a honest mechanic that looks at his customers best interest and not trying to fatten their wallet at your expense. I can't thank you enough Mic. You rock. read more

They could have taken me for some money, but they told me straight up that they didn't have the machine necessary for measuring if your air fuel mixture is correct, and recommended I go to ridewest. These guys are honest. They are friendly and easy to work with. They do excellent work, and are experts on BMW motorcycles. All that said, I want to correct what some people are saying about pricing. These guys are not cheap. I have been using them for a few years now, and have observed the prices increase over that time, no-doubt due to increased demand for their excellent service. In my experience, the prices are comparable to what one would pay at the dealership. That said, they will tell you when you don't need something done, when there is a cheaper alternative, or even occasionally when it makes more sense to get a repair done at the dealer (for example, on a part that fails frequently where the dealer warranty would cover both parts and labor). I'll continue to use these guys as long as Mick Vallantine still runs the shop. I've noticed over the years that I see less and less of him. Most of the work is done by the two mechanics he has working for him. But he's still in control and the honesty and integrity that made his business a success are still there. read more

I recently had the great experience to meet bmw mechanic Dana,at valentine motors in seattle,wa.I towed my bike for five hours to get to this shop. not only did I feel that i could trust Dana's abilities,which I later found out were correct,my 1980 bmw r100rt is running better than anytime i can remember.The bike had been in storage for approx.8 years because of a move from state to state and medical reasons. gas tank was full for all those years along with numerous adjustments needed.After two and a half days of vigilance on his part,handled with an expert's experience,I am once again reunited with my best friend,my beemer! I recommend any one who has a beemer to check these guys out,you won't be disappointed. Lastly,I have been to the best bmw shops in the bay area for years and Valentine is on the top of my list. Like finding a good barber or dentist, finding an honest and competent mechanic is a tricky business. That said, I think I've found an exceptional one at Valentine's BMW service. I brought a bike in for an oil change and good "once over" (I purchased it via Ebay, so wanted it cleared for take off), and it was carefully and meticulously scrutinized and evaluated. I even brought in an extra plastic piece that needed to be mounted, and that was done for free! I took an old '75 R90 in that had gone from running rough for a few years to not running at all into Vallantine's, and asked him to do whatever it would take to make the thing run right again. Up to even a complete overhaul. He didn't seem particularly motivated to touch the bike in the first place, and acted like it was a favor to let it in the shop. And for $700, I got a new battery, an oil change, air in the tires, and a bike that ran . . . as long as you didn't expect it to run well. The idle had been screwed way up to keep it running, and as long as it was accelerating it ran well - - but it died if you stopped too quickly, and jerked and hesitated otherwise. I moved to Hawaii very shortly thereafter, quit riding for a couple of years again because it ran so crappy, and then finally located a mechanic here that immediately diagnosed the issue as worn and dirty carbs. $250 later (plus another $100 for a rebuild kit), and I've got rebuilt carbs and a bike that hums like a sewing machine. Don't know what Vallantine did that got it running, but it was only just good enough to get me out the door and down the road. Not exactly what I was hoping for, and a lot of money for what little I got. Maybe I caught him on a bad day. Maybe he prefers to work on newer bikes rather than an antique like mine. And in fairness to him, I wasn't able to bring it back to him to have him make it right since the bike was on a boat a week after it was in the shop. But overall, it wasn't a feel-good experience. read more

My husband loves his 2003 BMW R1150 GS Adventure and rides it year round (except for when there is ice or snow) and we have been going to Vallantine Motor Works since we moved to Seattle in 2008 (different BMW then). These guys are great!! They have always been affordable and even told us what to do so we could do it ourselves for small things when we had very little money (grad school). Dana is very cool to work with and we always know that my husbands bike is in good hands. He is incredibly knowledgable!! They will let you know if you can wait on stuff or if you can't and if there are different repair options they will always tell you what they are and let you choose. They also have a network of business connections that is very handy from shock repair, reupholstery, motorcycle towing, etc. Then you know that company is trustworthy too!
