A great go-to spot for a nice and relaxing summer or fall afternoon. Play some of the games they have lying around, drink in the view and the wines. You'll have a good time for sure. A group of friends and I visited Valhalla Vineyards during a weekend trip to Roanoke in October 2020. This place was a nice but short trip outside the city, allowing us an opportunity to see the beautiful countryside nearby. After a winding drive uphill, you'll reach Valhalla Vineyards, beautifully situated at a height that offers beautiful views of Roanoke and the areas around. The fields look lovely, and they've done a really nice job building up areas to sit and relax both inside their tasting room as well as on the many nice picnic areas outside - again all with stunning views. Due to COVID restrictions there were no tastings or flights on offer when we went, and we could only purchase wine by the glass. We tried a number of wines and I enjoyed a couple reds, specifically the Valkyrie ones. I found their white wines to be more drinkable -- please note we weren't having these with food, so maybe the reds come across better with some appropriate, accompanying meal. At the same time, people all around us were not complaining about the wine but having a great time and I saw plenty of folks go up for seconds, or order entire bottles to open on-site. Glasses were only $8 and the pours were very generous, so it was a solid value for a good time, a great view, and nice wine. As they continue to grow, their vines will mature further and their wines will be even better! read more

Weekend views of Roanoke on a fall evening make Valhalla Vineyards the go-to spot, especially on a gorgeous fall afternoon. With tons of outside tables or spaces to BYOChair/blanket, the fire pit will be pumping out sweet nostalgia and the charcuterie spreads will be drool-inducing. The vineyard has about a dozen wines by-the-glass with mostly red and some white options. I preferred the whites with the viognier shinning through with a medium body, deep straw yellow color, hints of ripe peaches and at $8/heavy pour, the staff is as generous as the shatter-proof glasses. It was pretty crowded when we arrived at 3pm with a mix of birthdays and weekend revelers looking for leaf changing. I was not a huge fan of the cigar smoke (they sell cigars on site) and wish they'd make a smoking and non-smoking section of the outside space. The beautiful winding road up mixed with ample parking and picnic space will keep the crowds flowing to Valhalla on balmy days to come! read more

Out of a 4 day trip with multiple winery visits, this was hands-down my favorite of the trip. Great view, a focus on bold, well-aged reds, references to Wagner, AND prices didn't bust your wallet. It's like I died and went to heaven (Viking heaven, that is). 20 acres of vines, although I forgot to ask how many cases/year. Most wineries in Virginia serve red wines that are maybe 2 or 3 years old. Anything beyond that is usually considered a 'library' wine, safely tucked away for special events (and the price doubled). NOT HERE. Valhalla has a special extended tasting option which includes a number of older vintages, ranging from 2003 to 2008 for $10. Shhhhush.....don't tell them that they could have tripled this price and I'd have still done it. I did both the regular and 'reserve' tasting. Choosing wines from here was drafting a fantasy football roster with an unlimited number of picks. I tasted additional wines beyond these, but at some point I just stopped taking notes as my taste buds became overwhelmed with liquid goodness. 2008 Gotterdammerung: Red blend that was still fruity and a bit spicy. And it was only $22 (!!!). 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon: Extremely smooth. Sangiovese (didn't get there year): Light color but enough bite to keep me happy. 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon: Nice, although it was pretty obvious this was getting past its prime. 2008 Cornucopia (red blend): It was bold for my palate, although maybe not to the same standards as others on this list. Non-vintage (NV) Valkyrie: Red blend made with grapes from different years. Actually one of my favorites of the bunch. 2007 Valkyrie: Cab Sauv/Shiraz blend: My favorite; still bold after all these years. Only $28. Alicante Bouschet: A French hybrid still planted worldwide (including southern France). Not bad, but not quite as good as the rest of the lineup. I will definitely be back here; preferably as my first option of the day, with food pairings to go with everything. The only downside is I might not make it to any follow on activities. read more

Valhalla Vineyards is perfectly situated at the top of the mountain and offers absolutely gorgeous views of Roanoke. The vineyard looks like it is very well maintained and the ambiance inside and outside of the tasting room is upscale. Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions, they are not doing tastings right now and you can only purchase wine by the glass. They allow you to bring your own snacks/food to enjoy with your wine, and have both indoor and outdoor seating overlooking the City. The reason I am giving Valhalla only 4 stars is because the wine they offer is limited primarily to dry reds. I personally love dry reds and the one I tried was great, but my significant other is not a wine lover like I am and prefers sweeter wines. They only had one dry white wine and one semi-sweet red and neither really struck his fancy. Definitely worth stopping by for the view of you like dry reds! read more

Cute winery that offers beautiful views!! Our party had the option to do a $6 or $10 wine tasting (both include a Valahalla logo wine glass) so we opted to choose our own 5 for $6 since the $10 one was a preselected flight. Once our tasting was complete we decided to share a pitcher of sangria for $25, this was their Syrah with punch and frozen fruit, and sit out on the patio to enjoy. This place is really beautiful! Quite the drive up the mountain. Be careful! The views are spectacular. They have an indoor and outdoor fireplace, tables outside and inside. No tastings during covid, unfortunately. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful, as I just moved from out of state and received some helpful tips! I first visited Valhalla about 11 years ago and was so impressed with the hospitality and quality of wines that I have brought friends and family to experience it themselves. I will add that we live a little over 2 hours away, so this was a real destination for us, and we bought a lot of wine at each visit. My husband gave me a trip to Roanoke on Mother's Day to have lunch and revisit this special winery. Our lunch was delicious (I'll do a separate review for that) and we eagerly looked forward to Valhalla. As others have said, it is a winding road up the mountain with a narrow, somewhat awkward turning entrance. Nevertheless, we were excited to be there. The first thing we noticed was the sad look of the vines near the road. Just an observation and could mean any number of things. When we got out of our car, we were a little surprised to see the number of young children running around on the grass AND in the parking area. Okay, it's Mother's Day. These are families picnicking. We get inside and every single table is taken with many folks playing card/board games or working/playing on their computer. No place to sit to enjoy a glass. Outside, there was absolutely no shade nor a free chair should you want to sit. It's obviously popular. I totally get that. We loved it too. The tasting. Oh, the tasting. The staff person who poured wine for us (I wouldn't call it a tasting) was unfriendly and completely uninterested in us and everyone else who approached the tasting bar. She obviously did not want to be there. I remember fondly the great reds and I wanted to revisit them. "No. You can taste from this side or that side. You can't taste both." She may as well have said "so there!", because that was her attitude. My husband was not tasting because he was driving, the road is tricky, and we had a couple of hours drive home. I chose a tasting and she poured the scantiest amount I have ever seen. I've seen more wine poured with those little pour spouts you see at festivals. She did say what each wine was, but either ignored or didn't hear me ask additional questions. I really wanted to taste the Gotterdammerung because I love Cab Franc. The pour was so scant that I could hardly get a good mouth feel, so I bought one to take home to try. The other wines were okay, I suppose, but again, I couldn't get a good nose or taste due to the stingy pours. We paid for my tasting and the bottle and left. As we were walking to the car, dodging children playing frisbee, my husband asked if I didn't want to have a glass on site. I said no. The atmosphere, the hospitality of the tasting room staff, and the wines were a big disappointment. A day or so later, I opened the Gotterdammerung. It was undrinkable. I know this is long and I know I'm being harsh. There are so many lovely wineries and tasting rooms in Virginia and North Carolina and I love the wine industry being in our back yard. Perhaps I had built Valhalla up in my mind, but the reality - to me - put "done" to my love and recommendations to others for Valhalla wines. read more

Today, November 7th, around 1:30 myself, four others and my service dog arrived at Valhalla. We were planning to enjoy some wine outdoors. We were going to sit at a table when an older woman with dark hair and red lipstick stuck her head out of the door and said dogs are not allowed. I explained that my dog is a service animal. The woman asked for documentation that the dog is a service animal. I attempted to educate the woman on the laws regarding service animals, that you can ask (1) Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability? and (2) What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?. She said she was the owner of the vineyard and has always required documentation for service animals. I explained that service animals do not have extra documentation, as per the laws from the Americans with Disabilities Act, and that whereas an emotional support animal may require a doctor's note a service animal does not. The woman was concerned that if other people saw a dog on the property they would assume they could bring dogs as well. I am well aware of the fact that no dogs are allowed on the property, as it says right on the home page of their website. However, this statement legally cannot apply to a service animal. At this point the woman said it's fine you can stay, she will call the owner and see what they say. This statement was very strange to me as she had previously said that she was the owner. Also, she was very rude and acted very put out by the situation, as if my disability was an annoyance to her. Furthermore, this entire conversation was had in front of the entire patio of other customers. Obviously we did not feel welcome here and left. This was a very unfortunate experience, especially as I have previously been to Valhalla (without my service dog) and had a great time. However, it is clear to me that people with disabilities are not welcome at Valhalla. What I just experienced is something I hope others with disabilities will not have to experience at Valhalla, simply by not going. I do believe that I can hopefully prevent this by alerting the Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division of the discrimination occurring at Valhalla. This vineyard is a long trek straight up Bent Mountain but the views alone make the trip worth it!! All of the grapes are harvested for their wines from their own vines. There are a couple different tasting options: you can try 6 young wines for $6 or try 7 mature wines for $10. Naturally, my wife and I did each one and shared with the other. Our favorites were the 2005 Valkyrie and the Alicante Bouschet. They let you keep your stemless tasting glass with their logo on it, which was the largest tasting glass I've seen (real wine glass size). read more

Had the wines not been fairly good, we would have walked out. Probably the worst staff we have ever seen at a winery. First, the other person who poured, while she did describe the wine a little, actually was checking her phone in front of her customers. Ours seemed to be very aggravated that we interrupted her day. When we told her we hadn't been in awhile which wines should we choose- silence. So we then said maybe we should try different wines to taste more. Her response, " circle them". Not a suggestion, nothing. She would pour the wine, tell us which one it was, and stand there waiting for us to finish so she could pour the next. When their were fewer wineries, we might have overlooked this. Probably won't be back until we see under new management. read more

Do not buy any wine from these people. Enjoyed the view and our time at the winery. The "tasting" was fine but cursory. There were two people behind the counter. One was nice and helpful but didn't know much. The other seemed to know a lot but also seemed mad that she had to be there. That said, we liked the wine and ordered several bottles that were shipped. When the arrived the wine was bad. Seemed to be something with the cork which crumbled when removed. Called the winery with no response. Sent them a video of the cork crumbling and poured the wine which was clearly bad. No response to that either. Net result is no response to multiple emails and calls. Disappointing. read more

I'm especially fond of their Cornucopia, which is a blend of several red varietals depending upon the years' harvest. We were visiting family in the local area and enjoyed the scenic drive to the winery. The vines next to the drive leading to the wine tasting were laden with grapes. My husband and I both did the tasting. I did the $6 and he did the $10. I found the lady assisting us to be very friendly and she shared information about the wines and made recommendations. We purchased a few bottles to take with us and shared an open bottle outside while we enjoyed the beautiful view of the mountains and Roanoke. My guess is they cater more to the locals who are familiar with the fact there's no food offered but you can bring your own and enjoy the picnic tables outside. There were only two white wines--Voignier and Chardonnay. The reds weren't my favorite but we did buy a bottle of the semi-sweet red. One should be able to find a bottle to enjoy with the view. The view pushed this to a four-star review. read more

The first thing that struck me was how aptly named this place is. It's a Norse looking hall on top of a mountain overlooking the city of Roanoke and the nearby area. A hall in the sky indeed! I came with my family and we participated in the wine tasting, which was reasonably priced. The wines were great, and we bought a couple of bottles to drink and enjoy the view. They let us keep the engraved tasting glasses which was nice too. It looks like they hold events there too, there are advertisements and pictures of events that have been held there, and it definitely looks like a great place to host a social event. Nice spot, high up on a mountain with a view of the city of Roanoke and the surrounding 'burbs. The road leading up to this place is not very well marked, so have your map ready. The wines are all good, and quite unusual. Some red blends I've never had before, like Gotterdammerung, blend of Cab Franc and Merlot. A good dry rose as well. A cool chimney that serves an indoor fireplace and an outdoor one, and plenty of tables outside. A thunderstorm ripped through while we were here and it made for an interesting, and somewhat unnerving, experience. read more

Great red wines, spectacular views, and friendly atmosphere........ We stopped in for a tasting. The ride up the mountain was harrowing towards the end, with a narrowing road, and huge drop off and no guardrail. But at the top you are rewarded with 30+ mile views. They only had red wines available to taste when we were there, but that is ok since we prefer reds. we elected for the reserve tasting at $10 pp. Their tasting list included several aged reds, including from 2000, 2001, and 2002. Many were very nicely done. We especially loved the 2006 Cab Sav, the 2002 Syrah, and the Alicante Bouschet, a Portugese red. We ended our very enjoyable experience by purchasing 15 bottles for our future enjoyment. Although I thought after purchasing more than a case of wine, the tasting fees should have been waved, I still consider this worth the visit. read more
