I came to VW because my normal salon was full and I'm so glad I did! They did an excellent job on my gel manicure and my nails have lasted for a entire month without chipping (unheard of for me). Are they grown out? Of course, but they are chip free and haven't discolored. The last time I cam here was about 10 years ago, when I lived in SF. I think the might have changed owners 8 years ago. The women who worked on my mani-pedi were super nice. One was named Lily. Amazing! I don't remember the other's name unfortunately. The nail salon has a lot of OPI and Essie nail polishes, definitely a plus. Owner is nice, but I'm not down with her trying to upsell me on the "like" gel polish (regular polish, it doesn't need UV light). "Like" gel is regular polish. I don't often write Yelp reviews but I have to say this: I've been to this nail place a couple of times and have a had a good experience, but I had such a bad one yesterday that I will NEVER go back here: I was getting a manicure/pedicure and the women who was giving me a manicure cut me BADLY when she was clipping my cuticles. I was bleeding profusely and in a lot of pain, and also worried that I was going to get an infection. I've never been cut like this getting a manicure before (having been getting them regularly for 20 years) but I know that there's a reasonable risk of infection in situations like this. I asked a couple of times if she had any antiseptic and she kept saying yes but not giving me any - who knows what the miscommunication was there. At any rate, I had her not put polish on my nails because I didn't want her polishing the cut finger (I really was bleeding pretty badly), and didn't want to have 9 out of 10 fingers with polish on them, so I just put a stop to the whole show - and left there with no polish on my fingers (the pedicure was fine) with a huge gash on my finger, that now looks green, infected, and disgusting. The biggest problem, to me, is that they still CHARGED me for the manicure! I didn't want to make a scene - the place was super busy on New Year's Eve - but I suggested nicely that maybe they could not charge me, and they acted like they didn't even know what I was talking about. It's like, look, you can give me a f%&*ing discount and try to keep my business, or you can charge me the $10 and NEVER SEE ME AGAIN - but that's what they chose. Pathetic. I'm probably going to have to see a doctor for my finger too. It's literally green. Ps: They also charged me for an extra foot massage even though I did not ask for one (which was awesome). read more

For some reason I had the worlds longest and not luxurious mani pedi known to man. The staff wasn't even attempting to be friendly except for when you come in. I walked in on Friday afternoon and they were able to take me right away, but I get the feeling I was really lucky because they had to turn away several people while I was there because they were so busy. My nail tech was super friendly--not super talkative, or pushy. She took extra care with my pedicure and the massage was amazing. When another guest walked in towards the end of my service I don't feel like she rushed the polish or was pushy about making me free up the chair before my polish was dry. A tiny little slip of a nail salon that does great work, is reasonably priced and, most importantly, stays open until 7pm 7 days/week! I knew I liked them when I went in to get a gel manicure removed (which requires soaking, buffing, etc--a long process) and a regular manicure and was charged the standard manicure price of $10 even though it had taken my manicurist a lot longer because of the gel removal. The owner said she doesn't do gel at all because she thinks it's too hard on nails, and I'm inclined to agree with her. read more

I had an eyebrow threading appointment last Friday at my favorite place across the street. When I arrived, there was a "We Closed Early" sign on the door. I would normally have panicked, but for some reason I wandered across the street and landed upon V.W. Nail Care, with brow waxing advertised in the window. I feel like I should have been turned off by the sketchy pull blind waxing section a bit too close to the pedicure stations, but I am so happy I just went for it. This place is GREAT! Super tiny so its easy to pass by, which i think makes it so good, many people don't notice it and therefore it isn't overrun! My mani/pedi combo with foot scrub and massage was only 41 dollars and was very good quality at that. That price is basically unbeatable for san francisco. Only use OPI products and they sterilize their own tools, so less waste from cheap packaged products. Warning: Boss lady knowwws her nail care (as my sister put it with some attitude) so yes if you ask for a paraffin hand mask you WILL get bitched out for a few minutes ha ha. Love this place. Been going for 8 years and have always had amazing manis and pedis. Their regular polish looks like gel and lasts well over a week. Prices have gone up over the years but it's still cheaper than most other places that offer lesser quality. Van, the owner, is stubborn and hilarious and she knows her customers like her own children. Def recommend this spot. Also, Van has been doing my brows for nearly a decade. She's better than anyone. This place I will NEVER go back here! The service was HORRIBLE! The lady who did my manicure was very rude! She was speaking in Vietnamese the whole time to her co-worker and laughing about me. She also cut my nails way too short and filed my nails so rough that it was not even smooth! I told her to just trim my nails not cut it down to bare bones! She also rushed thru out the whole manicure. There was another lady who did my pedicure who I admit took her time and was very nice but the lady who did my mani gotta go! The owner of the nail salon was also very very RUDE! I wanted to simply wait 5 minutes to dry my pedicure since I didn't have flip flops with me. She gave me those in house slippers and told me to leave! I simply asked for a plastic bag to put my shoes in and she said to me in a very sassy tone "we don't have that here!". Basically they booted me out of their salon with me holding my shoes in a plastic bag and me wearing those goofy slippers walking on the street! WTF?! The owner of this business, Van, has a serious attitude problem. Last Friday, I made my third visit to her nail salon in two weeks. She didn't acknowledge me in any way. From the start, she told me she had only little time to take care of me, barely responded to my attempts at conversation while she was doing my nails and kept acting irritated, saying she hadn't had lunch yet etc., as if she had a personal beef with me. If so, I'm not clear what that could be, since I left her a tip on my first two visits. Like the other times I was in, she kept bantering and babbling in Vietnamese to her employees while they all dealt with customers who clearly cannot understand a word of it. Unbelievably rude. I could not help thinking of the famous Seinfeld episode when Elaine is being slighted at her regular nail salon and she finally enlists the help of Mr. Costanza to decipher what the heck they're saying about her in Vietnamese. They do a good job with your nails (hence the 2 stars) but I refuse to patronize a business where I'm so obviously not welcome. There are tons of other nail salons steps away so, unless Van has elected you as one of her favorites, I'd advise you to steer clear of her path. read more

I love this woman, Van. I have been going to her for nail care and waxing for about a year now, and I have literally never been disappointed. My regular manicures are often mistaken for gel nails (which she does not administer, for it weakens your nails), and I constantly get compliments. My average manicure lasts 7-9 days, and I wait tables. Van is sure to foster an environment of camaraderie, not servitude. She is accommodating and intuitive, and has charmed many.
