She is so friendly and accommodating and I trust her judgement on what type of haircut would suit me. I will sometimes come in with some inspiration, but other than that, I let her take the reins and do whatever, so long as I am consulted about the length! Sometimes I like keeping my hair long, sometimes I'm just ready to chop it all off. I also really like how this studio is set up where she only works on one person - it's intimate but also comfortable. Joy is such a pleasure to go to when I need to get a fresh cut. I am trying to be better and get my hair cut more often, but she is such a treat that it almost feels wrong to come too often...but so long as I am in the area, I will ALWAYS go to Joy and will recommend her to anyone.

I know I can trust Helen to give me perfection even when I don't even know what I want. Today, I came to Helen wanting to blend my roots a little bit. She had done this absolutely gorgeous ash bronde balayage, but it had been a few months and I wanted to blend my very very dark roots. I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted, so I told Helen to do what she thinks would be best and wow, she delivered. She somehow created me the perfect tone for my skin that makes me look so tan and glowy. Even though I was in a bit of a time crunch, she still gave me such a beautiful blowout and soft curls. I've gotten more compliments today on my hair than probably my whole life! All the girls at the salon were so sweet and welcoming and even their clientele were so kind. Heather has really created something special! Can't wait to get my hair done again soon!!!

I went home and just convinced myself it was good but after a week I finally did my hair and discovered I had many chunks of uneven un-blended pieces. They charged me $340. I even tipped my hairstylist over 20% so a $400 haircut essentially. I messaged my hairdresser about this issue and he just told me to come in so he can take a look... I don't have time to drive 45 mins for someone to look at my hair. I would like someone to tell me they will fix it and it was their mistake. My intuition tells me it's not worth coming back. I just can't trust his work ethic or the salon. Transparency and honesty is so essential.

When you find a hair and makeup artist you love, you've hit the jackpot. Kris, owner of Grit Studio…read morein Alexandria, is a stylist I can count on any time I book. I've seen Kris for about the past year for blowouts and makeup applications for a variety of events, photo shoots and theater performances. Kris listens carefully to the service you want. Whenever I've shown reference photos, she re-creates them flawlessly. With makeup, I love the lash application she includes and the long-staying wear of the makeup products she applies. She's also extremely efficient, and after the first visit, she perfected my look and made each subsequent appointment easy, quick and simple. I recently visited for a headshot package she offered, where a professional photographer took new photos in her studio after I received hair and makeup treatment. I really appreciated Kris during the shoot, as she offered tips for posing and even touched up my hair and clothing to help me get the perfect shots. Her vast experience as an editorial stylist and big event artist (weddings, glam, etc.) has really provided her with an expert eye that made the photo shoot even more successful. If you're looking for hair and makeup you can trust to look great, I'd highly recommend Kris in Alexandria.

She is a master colorist, stays up-to-date on industry trends & techniques and is an all around lovely person. My tip: Make your appointments well in advance. I schedule mine up to a year out. She's highly in demand (that's what I want in a stylist!) and weekends fill up fast. Original review (2016): Sue Scott is amazing with hair, both color and styling. She gave me a balayage of caramel and mocha colors and I've never been so happy with getting color. Then I showed her images of 40s style curls that I'd been trying to accomplish at home. She gave me a great tutorial as she styled my hair, and I though this really went the extra mile. I've been able to replicate it at home, which is what I think we all want to be able to do after we leave the salon. I also felt like Sue really listened to what I wanted. I like to have flexibility to air dry (natural waves), straighten or curl and wanted a cut that would be versatile. I've tried all three since I got my cut last week and I'm very pleased with the results. In the salon, she's really easy to talk to and has a really positive attitude. I think the best way to get an idea of someone's work is to see it. Sue posts almost daily to her Instagram (@wispsalonalexandria), so if you are trying to make a decision on if her style would work for you, this is a good place to start. She also uses online appointment booking, which I prefer. Highly recommend!
