Update (12/2019): I'm still a faithful patron of WispSalon and cannot recommend Sue Scott enough. She is a master colorist, stays up-to-date on industry trends & techniques and is an all around lovely person. My tip: Make your appointments well in advance. I schedule mine up to a year out. She's highly in demand (that's what I want in a stylist!) and weekends fill up fast. Original review (2016): Sue Scott is amazing with hair, both color and styling. She gave me a balayage of caramel and mocha colors and I've never been so happy with getting color. Then I showed her images of 40s style curls that I'd been trying to accomplish at home. She gave me a great tutorial as she styled my hair, and I though this really went the extra mile. I've been able to replicate it at home, which is what I think we all want to be able to do after we leave the salon. I also felt like Sue really listened to what I wanted. I like to have flexibility to air dry (natural waves), straighten or curl and wanted a cut that would be versatile. I've tried all three since I got my cut last week and I'm very pleased with the results. In the salon, she's really easy to talk to and has a really positive attitude. I think the best way to get an idea of someone's work is to see it. Sue posts almost daily to her Instagram (@wispsalonalexandria), so if you are trying to make a decision on if her style would work for you, this is a good place to start. .After doing a ton of research , I made an appointment with Sue for blonde highlights and a haircut . I booked my appointment online which was really convenient. Her salon is super cute and inviting and is located inside of Sola Salons with plenty of free parking . She made me feel comfortable and did a thorough consultation to make ensure that we were on the same page . I showed her a picture of what I was looking to have done and she nailed it ! I finally found my go to gal ! She is very sweet and personable, she is truly a master colorist and professional ! read more

Sue is a sweetheart and I looooove the cut she gave me - I chopped almost 8 inches off but she made the whole thing quick and painless. Unfortunately due to our overlapping vacation schedules, I did have to go see someone else to have my color corrected as my roots turned out a bit warmer than I like, given they weren't toned after the highlights. That said, I left in much better shape than I showed up in and I enjoyed our time together! read more

I am writing this for my service on May 3rd for a shag cut and dimension highlight color. Well sadly, I am even more disappointed on how it is growing out. The color was great. But the cut was not what I asked for and it wasn't a shag cut with curtain bangs. I sent Only 4 reference pictures that I'm sure she didn't look at. I had them labeled. I had to come back to have it fixed but it still wasn't a shag cut. It was good enough but I don't think the care was there for the price I paid. read more

Sue is AH-Mazing.... Worth the wait, worth every penny. She is beyond talented with a wonderful personality. I have been going to her for a full balayage and cut for my long hair for almost a year. I came to Wisp after reading several reviews and recommendations for a haircut and color. To say Sue met my expectations would be a understatement. After multiple "okay" experiences with balayage at other salons, I was amazed at how Sue went above and beyond to make sure I got the color I asked for. I emailed Sue in full desperation mode. I had not had a professional haircut in over a year and was rocking the kind of shabby chic look that isn't okay over for anyone over the age of 20. Within a day, Sue had responded with a link to her calendar and I booked the next available appointment! Wisp is inside the Sola Salon Studio suite, which if you are unfamiliar is a giant suite with individual shops, a genius idea. You cam get your hair, nails and eyebrows down from different stylists conveniently located in one place! Sue was so incredibly helpful. I sat and took my hair down and she immediately went to work figuring out what I wanted to do, what frustrated me about my hair, etc. (aka all the questions you want anyone cutting your hair to ask). The entire time she was wonderful and hilarious, alternating complaints about traffic to teaching me who to use a curling iron (yeah I know, it seems like I thing I should already know, but I don't). If you are new to the area and don't know where to go, or have lived here forever but aren't loving where you currently go - come to Sue! After 4+ years with my previous stylist/salon, I was looking for a change and was understandably nervous about it. Turns out that I had no reason to be nervous because Kelsey is amazing! I went to Kelsey for a balayage, cut, and extensions reinstall and was 110% impressed. My hair has not looked this good and felt this healthy in a long time. Kelsey is incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, passionate, and talented. Not even 24 hours later and I had received multiple compliments on my hair from strangers. While at the salon, I was treated to extras such as a hand massage and hot towel. The salon itself is small and intimate and everyone is so friendly and welcoming. Sue has 20+ years of experience cutting hair and it shows. I have wavy/curly hair and when I've gone to see other hairstylists it's been a bit anxiety inducing. I've wondered about the outcome and with Sue it's never in doubt. She is a HAIR MAGICIAN. It's like she sees the best that your hair can be then nimbly and easily cuts your hair to reflect that. Let me preface by saying, I have been looking for a hairstylist in the Northern Virginia area for a LONG time...3 years to be exact. I moved down to the area to finish my schooling, and was still driving back home to northern MD to get my hair done, because I couldn't find someone. Not anymore though!!! After searching for a good stylist and finding Sue through Yelp and Style Seat, her reviews and pictures were too good to pass up. I had an appt for full balayage and cut this past Friday. I have been burned before with getting highlights and am extremely highlight shy because of it even though I really love the subtle natural look. Sue was a pro though and put my fears at ease with a great consult before she got down to business. She knew exactly what I wanted from what I showed and told her, and when I wasn't sure which way to go she gave me some great professional opinions that helped me make informed decisions. The balayage was amazing, just the sort of natural, sun kissed look I was going for as a brunette. My hair, when it was all said and done, looked like one of the Pins on Pinterest everyone and their mother wants to save and have their hairstylist achieve. And the cut! Wow! I opted for a long bob as I've seen them everywhere and fell in love with the breezy, cool girl look. Sue knew exactly how to tame my thick hair to look so light and effortless. I must have ended the day with 20 compliments. Not only did she color and cut my hair though, she also gave me a mini lesson on how to style the cut with the waves everyone raves about. Before I've had places style my hair super quick then push me out the door without ever asking me what I wanted or ask if I knew how to achieve the look. Sue took her time to show me exactly what I needed to do and types of products that work best. All in all, it was a fabulous experience. I feel amazing and I am a new life long Wisp salon customer. I found Sue when I moved to the DC area by simply Googling salons near my house in Arlington at the time. She had so many positive reviews I decided to give her a shot. That was about 4 years ago and I've been going to her ever since. She is AMAZING! When I first went to her I had a very short, intricate cut and I was really nervous to have someone new cut it. But the minute Sue touched my hair I knew she was going to be awesome. I now have long hair but I get it colored every few months and she always does an impeccable job. When she branched out to her own salon this year I knew I would follow her no matter where the location but lucky me, it's still close to where I live. It's easy to find and there's plenty of free parking. If you are looking for a new stylist or you need a fresh new style do yourself a favor and go see Sue. I would absolutely consider her an expert in her field and she clearly loves what she does and it shows in her work. read more

GREAT WEDDING HAIR! Sue did my hair and my bridesmaids/mom's hair for my wedding in Oct 2014. I would hire her again in a heartbeat. Not only did she take her time to make sure everyone looked top-notch, but she also took guidance from the girls and made sure that everyone felt comfortable and really liked what she did. I've been going to Sue for my haircuts and color for years! She is the only hairstylist I go to. She's an expert with curly hair women like myself and she knows how to cut my thick and curly hair into stylish cuts that fit my face. Whenever I go to her, I just pretty much let her take reign over my hair style... I trust her that much. I recently went to visit her this past weekend at her new hair studio and she gave me a beautiful cut and color. The color turned out fantastic...I've gotten so many compliments on my hair in just the last few days. Her new studio is in a great location... so that means I'll come by to see her more often :) It is right up the street from the Hoffman movie theatre in Alexandria and there is PLENTY of free parking. Not to mention, her new studio is private so essentially, it'll only be you and Sue in the studio. No more listening to random conversations with other stylists and clients. Last thing I have to mention is that while I was there, another client came by to pick up some samples and I noticed that this client's cut and color was great too. I wish I could give an actual review on the services at Wisp Salon but unfortunately all I can say is Sue is unprofessional. I tried to schedule an appointment through her online site and never received a response back so I called a few days later and left a voicemail. I still did not receive a response after 3 days so I called again and left a voicemail but still no response. She could have just emailed me or had a recording saying that she was no longer accepting new clients if that was the case but simply not responding is unprofessional in my book. read more

Omg I wish I could give Sue more stars! I am not from this area and I was hesitant about finding a new stylist. I saw her ratings on yelp and I gave it a try. I am so happy I went to her. I have very long and thick hair and I am hesitant about who I go to. Her salon is very cute and nicely decorated she had her own area. Not only did she wash, cut, dry, and style my hair beautifully but she did it in 40 min top!I was so astonished and no wonder she is amazing. She told me she has been styling hair for 18 years. This is a long overdue review! I had my hair cut by Sue about a month ago and I am so in love with it. I get compliments on it so frequently that my sister is planning to go to her too! When I walked in Sue made me feel comfortable right away and began washing my hair with some delicious smelling shampoo and conditioner. When we got to the cutting part I told her I only wanted max 2 inch cut off and some kind of bangs and whatever else she thought I needed. A lot of times when I get my hair cut anywhere I would end up with at least 5 inch chopped off and my haircut would always leave me unsatisfied. Believe the reviews! Sue is that amazing! Once she was finished with my haircut I was amazed! Also, she knew how to handle my thick, unruly Asian hair! A huge plus for me since anywhere I go people seemed to be more alarm with it.
