I came here from a recommendation from a friend. Whenever you move to somewhere new, it's always a bit of a struggle to find a new hair salon spot. Especially in New York, so many spots are super pricey. I was so happy with my experience at V One Salon located in Chinatown. I got a woman's haircut for some layers, long bangs, and chopping off my split ends. This all cost me $55 before tip, which is more affordable than any other spot I've seen. First, you get your hair washed which was relaxing. Then I was moved over to the salon chair for my haircut. My hairdresser May followed exactly as I requested and my hair turned out great. There wasn't a noticeable difference but that was what I was going for --just to freshen up my hair. Great spot for a simple haircut. While everyone mostly speaks Chinese here, they can also communicate in English well enough. Note that this spot is cash only though! read more

I did my hair again at V One Salon. This time I bleached it 3x and dyed it grey with blue undertone. Manny and Wah Jeh were my hairstylists. They spent 4hrs on my hair and worked as fast as they can because I was in a rush to leave for my sister's wedding. My hair came out a little lighter than the picture I showed them but it turned out very nice. It looked good in pictures and in real life. EVERYONE was complimenting it. Crazy! The color looked a little golden brown even though there was no brown in it at all and I liked the brown. Manny and Wah Jeh worked diligently to make sure that my hair will come out looking good. First and last time coming here. Sam is such a rough person. I've never had a hair stylist wash by hair by rubbing the shower head back and forth ON my forehead. That hurts, by the way. Water kept falling into my eyes. I gave him the benefit of the doubt since he was a stylist, probably doesn't wash a lot of hair. However, there was more pain to come during the cutting process. The scissors kept snagging on my hair every cut he made. Sam also proceeded to trim the first couple of hair on my forehead with a buzzer, now every time I brush my hair there's an annoying fuzz there. Waiting for it to grow out is gonna be a drag. Not to mention I got poked in the eye a couple of times by his fingers. The buzzer kept banging onto my skull as he's buzzing around my head. He dropped the comb and pretended it didn't happen and kept buzzing along, eyeing each cut instead. I feared for my eyebrows every time he came close to them. More of a 4.5 stars. Came in on a Friday afternoon for a walk-in appointment. Didn't care who worked on my hair, so I am excited to introduce to everyone Ray and Maggie. Maggie was the one who dyed and washed my hair. The color turned out fantastic, but the service was a bit rough. The place was packed when I arrived and I could tell she was under a lot of pressure. We barely spoke at first. I told her my Chinese wasn't good. I could feel my hair get tugged as she tried to rush. My head felt like it was on an assembly line, and her patience was thinning by the minute. I hear her comment in Cantonese that I had too much hair. It was a battle she couldn't win. I finally asked her about the salon and herself in English. She cheerfully opened up and we chatted away as her grip on my hair finally eased. Overall, I would say Maggie did a wonderful job. The color was even all around and after a couple of washes, the red is slightly less vibrant, but that's expected. Plus, I am just rocking the red hair. (For those looking for an awesome and affordable shampoo and conditioner for colored hair, I recommend the SheaMoisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil line.) After Maggie washed my hair, Ray immediately began working on my hair. I requested to have my bangs trimmed and my hair cut 3 inches with layers and he did just that. He was also very rough on my hair, not giving special attention to a couple of tangles in my hair from the wash. He kind of just plowed through the knots, probably pulling out a couple of strands of hair each time (sigh). Overall, I was satisfied with my cut. To be fair, I'm not very picky about my hairstyle. As long as I have bangs that look cute, I'm happy. Cut + color was $110 before tax and tip. Would I recommend V One? Definitely. Has V One won me their undying loyalty? Not really. I kept telling him the length I want and how I part my hair (because he didn't part it correctly) and he insisted that I trust him; literally saying "trust me".... She was phenomenal and the best part is that washing, cutting and styling my hair was only $35, before tipping. Jun took the time to listen to what I wanted and I showed her a picture. I wanted sideswept bangs, layers for my long hair and needed at least 1.5 inches off my long hair. While cutting my bangs, she'd always ask first before cutting it a little more or even suggesting maybe we should go a little more shorter. She's incredibly detailed and didn't rush. Getting your hair washed and head massaged was another nice thing here. It's something I'm not used to but it got me relaxed and warmed up from an incredibly cold day outside. He also cleaned up all my lines along the temple area, and my forehead as well which was new for me but it actually makes such a big difference! My boyfriend comes here more than twice and every time it seems like there were different stylists doing his haircut. But the quality of the haircut is not the style he wants most of the time. He wanted to trim a bit on the top and cut a little bit more on the side. The problem: 1. One time they cut the hair way too short on the side and the top even though my boyfriend showed them the picture of what kind of haircut he wants. 2. Yesterday he went here and showed the exact same photo, and he ended up having both side shaved almost like bald, and did nothing on the top! They also failed to properly layer my hair. A price was agreed upon before they started to cut and dye my hair. At checkout I was shown a different price. I asked about this and the lady at the counter had no clue why. At this time I was already pissed off at their customer service and them ruining my hair. She asks her colleagues that helped me, comes back to tell me the $30 difference was for the hair wash. If you compare that to my $32 haircut, that makes completely no sense. I used to come here for Kenny (who is amazing), but they told me to try someone else while he's on an "extended vacation" They gave me SAM. I showed him my Pinterest inspiration photo of an Ash brown balayage with grayish tones. As he was drying my hair, I was horrified and saw how bad it really was. It was a brassy orange on top, green and gray in the middle, and blonde at the tips. It was splotchy, uneven and not blended well. I wanted to cry. I asked if I can come back another day to fix it since it's uneven and not the desired look. (Not even close) He proceeded to tell me "that's how your hair took color, that's just how it is". I told him it's not just about the color, it's uneven and I should not see bleach streaks at the top of my head. He was dismissive, and brushed off my complaints and said things like "I've been doing this for years", "we gave you a very good price", "it's your hair that takes color this way"... THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE and I've had plenty of beautiful balayage colorings done. I was so upset I didn't know what to do so I left because he was not willing to do anything to correct this. On my way out, one of the hair washing ladies said to me "maybe you can try purple shampoo..." So I have to fix your mistake??? It was so rude and unprofessional... I don't wish this grief on anyone. Salons make mistakes, and what they're supposed to do is fix it. What horrible customer service!!!! This will be my last time coming here as a frequent customer. I went to another salon the next day to fix it and all they had to do was toner. This was not offered by Sam, a seemingly simple fix. I was only given a huffy, defensive attitude. This place has gone DOWNHILL. I think they're lying about Kenny being away on vacation after reading other older reviews. Do not make the mistake of coming here for a color job. I look like I have a sad rainbow on my head with a flame at the top. Thank god for the wizard at New Light in Brooklyn who was able to fix this at only $65 for toner. I've gone here twice. First time to touch up my colored hair... their touch up was horrible.... when the process was done I can still see my previously old colored out, faded bleach hair. I'm no hair prof but I know a 30 min dye isnt Shit. When the process was done they dare to charge me $130 + 20 tip = $150... for a trim and a touched up to my hair. I got Sam. The day after edit: I am horrified after I washed my hair at home that my hair looks like one of a cheap whore. I have flyaways all over my head. My hair looks thin and weak. He didn't ask me for my opinion and just started cutting. He did long layers which is something I didn't ask for. I just expected it all to be the same length as a basic, but I normally get short layers if any at all and only in the front. The only thing he said to me was "how long do you want it?" Now my hair looks disgusting. I don't fucking have time to flat iron my hair every day or to style it. Pissed does not describe how I feel about my hair. Given that there were tons of hair cut places in the Manhattan area, I decided to give this place a try. They have staff there who can speak Mandarin and English. For those who cannot speak mandarin, you can still come here. As for pricing, a normal haircut for males starts at $25. This includes cut and wash. I had Suzie cut my hair. She was very nice and enthusiastic. Funny at times. She made the experience very good. Her workstation is near towards the front of the building. Also, if you come here with a stylistic in mind, be sure to know that they charge $10 MORE if you have a stylist preference. I think this is a bit strange, but then again they want all their stylists to have work rather than having favorites in some. As noted earlier, this is a CASH only establishment. You are expected to tip your stylist and the staff who washes your hair. Definitely give this place a try. I'm sure you can find another barbershop nearby that is a bit cheaper. First off, Kenny is the absolute best! He's such a little cinnamon roll. So I've come in here twice, once for a haircut and another to dye my hair. The first time I just did a walk in and it wasn't too busy and got seated right away...coincidentally with Kenny! I showed him pictures of what I wanted my hair to look like and he gave his own critiques as well (which is what I love because who doesn't like an honest hairdresser?). The cut was great and people complimented the chic-ness of the cut! Yesterday, I came in to get my hair dyed the first time. I had an appt at 1 PM Friday and the place was PACKED. Kenny had me seated right away and started bleaching my hair and everything for the balayage(?) + ombré. He had another helped Jackie as well! Kenny was there most of the time and also supervised to make sure everything was going well. He had to leave several times to cut and deal with other people's hair (because everyone wants Kenny!) but I felt totally safe in Kenny and Jackies hands. Kenny made sure to go over every step of the process with me so I understood what was going on, which I really appreciated and helped calm my nerves! After 4-5 hours...I was more than pleased with the result! As usual, Kenny did an amazing job! I had compliments from everyone (including my mom, which is an accomplishment by itself!) He's also the KINDEST hairdresser I've ever had. Always honest with what it'll turn out as and always so courteous. He somehow recognized me after the first time and hugged me when I saw him again! Truly such a precious person and a talented hairdresser. I think I've found my hair salon and I have Kenny to thank! Also NOTE on the language barrier: he prefers to speak in Chinese to get his points through a lot quicker but he has no problem talking in English! I tried to accommodate by squeezing out all the Chinese I could retain. But you won't have a problem with him or any of the hairdressers here with language barriers! :) read more

At the recommendation of my roommate I found my way to V One Salon when it was at its older location back in 2014. The first cut I ever got was from Suzie. She was friendly and I trusted her opinion. I showed her what I wanted, and she pretty much made it happen and then some. Went again in 2015 and did not have Suzie, but a man. I asked for a cut and color again and this time I got the cut I wanted, but the color was lighter than I had anticipated. Went back this Sunday and requested Suzie again. I wanted to get rid of my ombre and stick with a medium ash brown color and a trim. David did the coloring and treatment/washing and Suzie cut and styled. At first it looked a little lighter than what I wanted, but I realized I was just under strong lighting in the salon. The after photos that Suzie took on my phone (now posted) look AMAZING. She totally did what I wanted and made it look healthy, light, and fabulous. I am definitely going to continue to request her in the future. Docking one star because color/treatment/cut/style gets you around $100-135 for the package, but then again I'm sure the pricing would be much more if it were at a high end salon.
