Been coming every year since I was little to see Mabel and she never disappoints!! You can call in English or Chinese to schedule an appointment, the prices are very reasonable $49 for a trim and wash. They also offer scalp treatment packages, three sessions for $165, and the scalp massage is so worth it. She also colored my hair (see pic) back in March and this is how it's holding up in July! read more

One of the must-dos during Chinese New Year prep is getting a haircut! This time around I washed my hair the morning of and just got a cut at the salon. I booked an appointment for 10:30am and was assisted by Dennis. He was very helpful during the consultation after I explained what type of cut I wanted and offered helpful suggestions before starting the cut. I had expressed that I wanted to maintain the length, not too heavy curtain bangs, long layers and to keep the volume. He also taught me a simple way to style my hair with a flat iron to give it more movement and explained why he was texturizing my hair which I appreciated. He even noticed what went wrong with my previous haircut (which was a bad haircut I had been growing out). You'll be in good hands with Dennis as your stylist! In total, the cut cost $48 and took around 30-40 minutes during a weekday morning. read more

This salon is far from the long lineup on Pell St. It's actually very nice inside and the girl manning the front desk spoke English as did my hair wash lady so that was helpful. They took my sweater to hang up when I went to go get my hair washed first. And they had an itemized bill at the end of my haircut which is also convenient. It's not just scrawled handwriting. It's an actual billed checklist. My hair stylists name was Dennis and he also spoke English although not as fluently so I strained to understand him several times. He cut my long hair as requested but parted my hair wrong so the hair cut came out lopsided feeling. I should have spoken up and parted my hair the way I usually do but he was like "Your hair part is here because that's how it fell when your hair is still wet" Stylistically speaking he didn't really go for the picture I brought up for inspiration and he said it wouldn't suit my face. I didn't agree with him but I didn't push it. Not sure what would have happened if I pushed back but because I just agreed with him to go with his suggestion I left feeling pretty disappointed with how my hair turned out. Luckily its just hair and it will grow back. I would like to come back to this salon because I liked the atmosphere but I will be requesting a different stylist next time because I didn't feel like Dennis listened to me well and his styling methods don't feel compatible with me. read more

Knew my hair my was screaming for help. They take appointments as well as walk ins. My stylist happened to be Dennis. He was really nice when giving his thoughts on my poorly managed hair and how to correct the situation. Haircut, wash, dry and color totaled less than $140. This will vary upon your hair length and color option. So please keep that in mind. It took about two hours to complete and I was a walk in. I would recommend this salon and of course, Dennis. read more

I went to a more experienced, specialized stylist today who told me that my last haircut (3 months ago) wasn't thinned evenly all over my head; only the ends were and the top half of my head was still very heavy. I do corroborate this work personal experience, as within a month, my hair felt back to its usual thick ways. I'm not sure if this was the case for the first haircut here (I always ask for the same thing: thinned w/ layers), which looked better to me. Additionally, the male stylist with glasses who did my hair the last time blow dried my hair in an unflattering manner. It was alright when I left the salon, but after an hour, it looked poofy and weird. Maybe the skill level of the stylists isn't consistent, but after my second experience, I'm more wary about choosing Cutting Edge Z for my haircuts. read more

I've been coming here to do my hair for many years. I recently came in for a cut and full head of highlights. The quality of their services are always top- notch. I asked for natural highlights. The red-brown mixed in with my black hair looks so subtle but so there. The vibe of this place is very modern. All the staff are very professional and efficient. This place is always busy! read more

Great hair salon. You get your hair washed, cut, washed, blow dry, and then styled for ~$36 ($41 if you request a stylist). Ask for Jason he's a magician when it comes to cutting hair. read more

I called to make an appointment with Neal who was able to fit me in within the next couple of days. On the day of, I walked in and was immediately served. I got my hair washed and then specified layers, the amount I wanted cut off, and face framing layers to add volume to my hair. I am more than satisfied with the results. Neal took the time and attention to get everything right - cut, blow dry, final cuts, thinning to get the volume on the top of my head. Price was more than fair. I paid in cash. Be sure to individually tip your hair washer and hair stylist. I highly recommend and will be coming back in the future! read more

I was tired of growing out my black hair so I decided it was time for a change. I had a good experience the last time I came to this salon and I'm glad I came back! This time I had Neal work on my hair and he was very thorough in explaining all the steps and consulted me along the way. I ended up with more of a balayage and a few color tones for a more natural look and feel. The whole process took about 5 hours. I made an appointment ahead of time and was quoted $258 for the treatment and haircut. read more

Another perfect haircut by Mabel. I've been coming here infrequently for many years, however, every time a cut with Mabel never ceases to be just right: perfect. I highly recommend her! Their haircuts are around $45 and don't forget to tip the hair washer, they are all wonderful! read more

I've been getting haircuts at Cutting Edge Z with Jason for over a decade. Not only is he unbelievably talented, he also has a great personality and has been extremely helpful with my fluctuating hair journey. I've gone through 2 pregnancies over the past decade, so have undergone some hair transformations. He cut my hair so they can be layered and thick-appearing when I was undergoing postpartum hair loss and he's consistently styled my hair the way I've requested. It's not easy finding a hairdresser who understands your needs!! And I am so glad I found mine. Not to mention, prices are very reasonable here! read more

A great place to get your hair cut or dyed! They are extremely nice and did my touch ups for free at no charge. I dyed my hair blonde and realized that it was too light and blonde. The next day I went back into the salon and had it dyed dark blonde at no fee! The people here are very courteous and nice! Recommend it to anyone who wants a hair dye. Usually places in Chinatown are cheaper than salons in other neighborhoods!! read more

Every time I come here I receive one of the best cuts/colour of my life and this time surpassed my expectations tenfold. I made my appointment with Neal who is incredible and my go-to stylist in this salon. I recommend him to all my friends!! He's extremely attentive, kind, and really knows what he's doing. The entire time I felt like it was going exactly as planned- he would check in with me along the process, show me patch tests, and the assistant (I think her name was Kelly) was very kind as well. The cut part of the process is masterful and fast. The results were my dream hair. Im crying just looking at it. No idea how this was achieved but here it is reverse peekaboo in a rose gold/pink! read more

The staff was thorough. Upon arrival, They took the time to go over the process began with two thorough hair washes. However, when the second layer of gloss was applied, I experienced a slight stinging sensation. The staff was quick to notice promptly checked in on me. Overall, I left feeling satisfied with the color results and tipped. I would definitely recommend for customer service just be prepared for a scalp sensitivity. read more

Neal, as always, is amazing. Gentle, sensitive and listens to needs. He was able to keep the length of my hair but thin it out like a true magician. My one comment was when I was getting shampooed, I said to my shampoo lady that I had a sensitive scalp and I had allergies, but normal shampoo is fine. A stylist with short red hair chimed in very rudely and told me they didn't have anything for me, very loudly too. Neal came in and just instructed to shampoo gently and away from my scalp which was lovely. This stylist / colorist came back again and spoke in their language to the lady shampooing me and kept shaking her head disapprovingly right by my side! So obvious and so rude. Come for Neal and no one else. read more

I've been coming here for years to get my hair cut from Neal and he never disappoints. He's thoughtful about the styling and really considers what you say. I first was only getting hair cuts, but have now been getting a keratin treatment twice a year, after his recommendation. I have frizzy thick hair which is hard to maintain for me and rather than convince me to go for the most expensive treatment, he recommended something that would really work for me and my lifestyle. The other people who work at the location are also very nice and considerate. I like getting Jade to wash my hair because she's thorough with the washing and head massage. read more

We've came here on Yelp recommendations and had been coming here consistently for a few years now. We wanted a wolf cut but couldn't quite articulate it. Neal captured the concept immediately and the result was beautiful. This is not a fancy place where they have a coffee bar and serve you cappuccino, but they offer bottled water and the staff is super friendly and welcoming. The price is also reasonable but do recommend that you make an appointment. They do take walk in but on weekends it can get pretty busy. Highly recommend. read more

I really wanted to like this place because my friend recommended. She has been coming to this salon for years to get her awesome funky hair colored. She recommended her hair stylist to cut my hair. This guy that cut my hair may be good at coloring, he is such a sweet guy but his skill set in hair cutting is extremely bad. I didn't noticed how bad it was until I got home, because he quickly curled my hair when he finished. (Btw, he is not good at curling hair either) when I got home I realized it was VERY choppy and I had weird layers. I went back 2 days later (because I had a wedding to go and yes I went to the wedding with my ugly hair). I called the salon and they said they will charge me extra if another stylist re cut my hair. If it's the same stylist, it will be free. I didn't want to pay again. It's just not right to pay again and it was the stylist's mistake. So the same guy gave me a second hair cut. Guess what? Still very choppy and ugly. Ughh I gave two stars because he was a very nice guy. read more

Everyone has a different experience depending on what they want out of their visit at a hair salon. So set your expectations to: "preparedness". Be prepared w/ your research: I knew exactly what I wanted. I had an image for reference (thought it was just highlights). Be prepared to walk away: I also asked the stylist "if you can give my hair this outcome; then we'll do it. BUT if you think it's impossible; then I'll just do a full color". My stylist - Jason; my miracle colorist - turned my uneven $60 (cheap salon) KPOP orangey hazel blonde - into a Cali beachy warm Balayage. Jason took care of my hair and watched the assistant carefully to ensure my hair reaches the color I wanted. 4 hours + $250 (Balayage + tips). I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Balayage! I didn't even know what Balayage was... and now I'm hearing queen B... "I woke up like this - flawless". I came with 2 friends; I think one of them originally wanted a Balayage as well but somehow miscommunicated what she wanted and ended up with highlights instead. PSA: Balayage takes over 4 hours! Bring a friend, unless you love 4hrs of me time. They are also very friendly, will provide beverages at your request and also be sure to take bio-breaks between washes! This is a high-maintenance hair treatment; requires styling and work. I'll need to wake my A$$ up extra 20mins! OMG. Overall experience - perfectly committed! I will be returning - just for Jason. read more

To sum up: BEST cut & color I have had in New York City, every time! Ever since I found Jason at Cutting edge Z, my hair journey has been so much better, prettier and easier. I am so thankful I found him! Now anytime I want to change my hair up, I only go here and consult with Jason, truly all my visits so far have left me so happy with exactly the look and hair I wanted! I could go on and on about how wonderful each visit has been but to keep this review short lol I will stick to my most recent visit; Jason was truly a perfectionist and he got me the look I wanted without damaging my hair, in fact my hair is healthier and glossier now! I also really appreciated how he stayed late and did not rush it even though it was after closing, he made sure that I that I walked out feeling amazing about my hair. He also made sure to stick as close to my inspiration photo as possible without damaging my hair. He really took the extra time and attention needed to achieve the look and colors I wanted and explained the process to me every step of the way. He was super caring about my hair goals and the look I wanted. Overall, he's a TOTAL PRO. I have gotten so many compliments on my hair from colleagues, friends and even random people passing by. Its been a real treat having this color and look. Super thanks to you Jason and the welcoming staff at cutting edge Z. I've been totally in love with my hair since I got it done, it's been 4 months now and I still love them. The color and cut still looks so beautiful and I'm still getting compliments daily. At first, I went to the wrong cutting edge so make sure you're heading to the right one (this one has a z). Cutting Edge Z was just down the street so not too much of a hassle. I was a walk-in and requested Dennis based on prior reviews. All the staff was really nice! Dennis was very friendly and he gave me advice as to what style of bang would work best with my hair texture. I hadn't gotten a haircut in over a year so my hair was a bit of a mess but I asked for layers and bangs and loved how it turned out! Would definitely recommend! read more

I've hesitated putting out a review for this place for a very long time, simply because I don't want to give out my favorite stylish, Jason, away. I've been going to Jason to get my haircut for 3 years now and he has always been so consistent. I was miraculously sent to him on my first visit; I had about 3-4 inches cut during the first time, and I was so hesitant about having my hair (slightly) above my shoulders for the first time in almost 20 years since I've defied the boyish cuts my mom gave me as a kid. Surprisingly, it came out to complement my face shape pretty well and actually gave my hair a more voluminous look. That (and the reasonable price) was enough for me to come back again as a regular customer. I have yet to walk out disappointed in the many times that I've come back, and that is saying a lot. Jason is a master of his craft and he is very passionate about what he does. If you're looking for a stylist who understands Asian hair, I highly recommend going to Jason. I don't spend a lot of time doing my hair, and it shows a lot. I can't recall a time when Jason didn't politely offer his professional insight and advice to help me get healthier-looking and stylish hair. Not once has he tried to endorse a product from a sales point-of-view. I've taken most of his tips and tried the products that he's recommended because he knows his stuff and he truly means well for his clients. On top of that, he is also such a funny guy and a joy to talk to, and it makes a huge difference when you're just getting your hair cut in awkward head positions. The staff is always very pleasant and I've never felt rushed or felt any sort of pressure to buy into extra services. Their prices are a bit cheaper than what most of the other salons in the area are charging nowadays, and they treat their clients very well that I would come across some regulars. read more

I love my haircut from Jason at Cutting Edge Z! I haven't been this happy leaving a salon after a haircut. Thanks to a friend for recommending this salon, and thanks to Yelpers for pointing me to Jason as a stylist. Count me in as a new regular here. I have Chinese med/long hair and a Chinese wallet, to boot. So that means: 1. I'm deathly afraid of getting a FOB haircut with too much texturizing -- I.e., getting a mullet style that's popular in Shanghai and Taipei these days 2. I'm afraid of getting too blunt of a cut where you can see the chunky straight edge at the ends, which I fear I'll get with someone who isn't experienced or who doesn't understand stick straight Chinese hair line mine. And 3. It also means I like to spend within my budget of under $50. Here, the regular price for a haircut is $38. And the Yelp special right now offers 20% off if you go during the middle of the week when they're less busy. So, all in all this place was a gem. The lady who washed and massaged my hair gave me incredible service (I forgot to tip her at the end, and felt terrible about it once I remembered halfway home). I can't wait to recommend this to anyone looking for a great haircut from Jason and service. Jason has no problem speaking English. He communicated clearly what he was planning on doing with my hair. He also came across confident, so that gave me peace of mind as to him knowing what he's doing. On location -- Note that this "Cutting Edge Z" is not the same as another "Cutting Edge" also in Chinatown. This is the salon at Elizabeth and Hester Sts. Yes, the lady at the front desk is rather curt--I don't think she said a word to me, but I don't care because I'm here for an amazing haircut and as long as she gets my pricing right, I'm fine with her being whomever she wants to be. Also, for Chinatown establishments, I prefer to pay in cash. I believe it helps the business reduce their cost (since credit companies take a cut and charge businesses a fee). So, bring your cash as convenience! (Not sure but they probs take credit card if you need) I made an appointment for my haircut, which was super easy because they always pick up the phone during business hours. When I was there, it seemed calm enough that they could accommodate walkins. read more

Wonderful experience with Jason! He was really humble and a knowledgeable hairstylist. He was nice and honest with my hair condition: "your hair looks really flat and thin...no worries! I will make some nice layers to create some volume + the added waves (which he did!) I did a bayalage and he explained the process, as well as helped me choose the colors to best compliment my skin tone. Hair wash was alright wished the lady gave me an in depth massage. They also offered a bottle water which I appreciate it. Overall I enjoyed the process and Jason's attentiveness. Definitely coming back! read more

I had a haircut with Jason today and while the cut was pretty good, there was no styling or blowout at the end of the cut. He primarily used his fingers to blow dry my hair and barely used a brush to style/straighten it. That's how I blow dry my hair at night when I wash it at home! I have wavy hair so if it's not straighten, it will be get frizzy. Maybe I should have said something but I think I was left in shock when he signaled he was done. I've been coming here for 5+ years now. Won't go anywhere else in the city. Stylist Anthony was a recommendation from a friend after I had gotten an awful haircut else where. Anthony understood my vision and had great recommendations. Before each cut he sits down and we discuss what he's going to do. Dennis is fantastic! He listens to my concerns and gives me a hairstyle/haircolor that's even better than what I wanted! This is one of the better salons where I have my hair done. Came here and had a haircut with Dennis. I went to him 6 years ago at the other Cutting Edge and I remembered that he cut me a nice angled bob. I tend to jump around from salon to salon, so I haven't really stayed put anywhere. However I didn't want to risk a hair disaster, so I decided to go with someone who I had pleasant memories of. I had no idea how I wanted to have my hair cut and Dennis was very helpful in giving me suggestions after asking me about my hair goals and habits. I was thinking it would be chop, chop, choppity chop and done and done. But it took a surprisingly long time and he was very meticulous about it. Maybe now I can be Esther with the good hair. read more

I've been going to Cutting Edge Z for 6 years now. I've tried a few places in Chinatown before deciding to stick with Cutting Edge Z as my go to hair salon. When I stumbled in for a walk-in, I was assigned to Mabel randomly and because I loved how she cut my hair, I've been her loyal customer 6 years since. Mabel has always understand what I've want with my hair, she's given me a short bob cut in the summers, shoulder length cut, a quick trim to my long hair for layers during the winters, and most recently, I've decided to balayage my hair for the first time with her and I am very happy. Regarding COVID-19 protocols, they take your temperature, give you a new mask to wear, and asks that you sanitize your hands. There is a clear plastic barrier between seats for both washing, cuts, and coloring. Everyone in this hair salon is friendly and they're always generous. It was nice experience. Let me tell you a bit about my hair status: my hair, not like most of Americans'or Asians', is very thin and subject to handful loss. So I really am carefully to be advised to do straighten or coloring. However, Cutting Edge Z is ethical. They know my hair status. They didn't recommend me to do any straighthen or coloring, because of course there is a lot chemical. Instead, they recommend Keratin treatment, which can give my hair some protein, so give my hair some volume and keep my hair straight naturally for 2-3 months. I just did it yesterday. Let's see how it goes. Besides, Marble is very nice and talkative. They are all very professional. read more

A friend recommended Neal to me when I had moved to New York. Neal is great he listens and does exactly what you ask for... I normally ask to not thin my extremely thick hair and he listens... even if he might not want to he does. For a shampoo/cut/style its about $35 without tip. One time I had come for a haircut and Neal wasn't available and decided to go to Mabel since she seemed to have a good amount of reviews. That was a mistake... She didn't listen and when I tried to say something she basically shooed me away nicely to get her next customer in the seat. I actually saw her do the same thing to another customer that was before me... I should've backed out then. Just another reminder if Neal isn't available just wait for him. read more
