I have been doing straightening hair for long time since my old salon was closed, my friend told me about this place. It was convenient traveling to the salon. It locates in midtown, Manhattan nearby Korean town. The entrance is at 5th AVE. There are 2 floors (2nd and 3rd floor) for the salon, also has elevator to go up and disability access. I made appointment before I go, so when I arrived, it didn't take long to wait. Beau is my hair stylist; she is super sweet and professional. She consulted me on how I can do my hair, my hair condition, type of hair, coloring, touch up. She gave me a good advice for the best result. a straightening can take long time, but she has lots of patient and pay attention to her works. Also,, everyone over there are very welcoming and friendly, helping each other as a teamwork. Like I mentioned from the beginning, I have done straightening for years and the result I got after doing here, it was as my expectation. The service has gone down. I've been going to this salon for years for haircuts and perms but my recent visit was not great. I got a haircut and perm from Soyoung and I love it however, the experience with the helper/hair washer was subpar. Every time I've gotten a perm at this salon and other salons, I was offered a refreshment and snack since the whole process takes a while. They did not even bother to ask this time. The hair washer was rude on multiple occasions where she would just walk away to the hair washing station and just taps the chair and look at me wondering why I'm not moving. There was no communication on what we're doing next. The same thing happened when we were done washing my hair, she would just walk away and tap the stylist chair. The overall vibe felt uncomfortable, it's as if she was annoyed that she had to help with the service. I'd rather get my hair done at another salon nearby for the same price but better experience. read more

recently moved here and a friend recommended to come here but i've been disappointed twice in row by the service and quality here. coming from california where there so many good asian barbers, the ones here have little to no experience in the lowest tier ($90 for a men's haircut). at that price i expect them to at least know how to cut hair. the first time i told the female barber i usually style my hair a certain way and she said it doesn't matter and just cut it however she wanted and obviously it came out terrible. it was so bad that i went back a second time a month later before a wedding and specifically went to another male barber that my friend said he gets his haircut from. the guy was nice and asked how i usually style my hair but he kept cutting my hair with the razor until i basically got a buzz cut. and then at the end of it he said your hair is pretty difficult to cut. like wtf? maybe the higher tiers are better but at that point just go somewhere else. this place is trash and def not worth the money. i can get a better haircut in the subway. and if their only justification for the price tag is that they wash your hair twice, ill just go home and wash my hair. if you're an asian male i wouldn't recommend this place. i've gotten better haircuts at fantastic sams and supercuts read more

I've heard great reviews about Jane and decided to book an appointment with her for the first time. She's very honest about what will work and what may not work for my face (on the wider side)/type of hair (long/thin). So even if I had pictures of the cut I wanted her to recreate, she did an amazing job to create a look that works best for me. I received a lot of compliements and everyone had this cut is absolutely stunning! The salon is also clean and the staff is very friendly. The price to me is reasonable ($120 w/o tips) similar to the high quality salons in Seattle. To improve hair health/growth/volume, she provided a few recs I can try (diet and scalp massager). I usually come here whenever I don't get my haircuts in Asia lol so I guess it's my de facto haircut place in NY. I go with Kay, who does a good job of listening and explaining the haircuts and what the shape would look like after I show him pictures/videos. The haircuts are solid, especially if you're descriptive about what you want, though the price is definitely on the expensive side (It's around 110 after tax and tip for a basic men's cut). If have longer hair or want to do something more stylish/complex, Maison de Mi is a pretty solid option, otherwise if you're just doing a basic trim/buzz, I'd go to somewhere cheaper. read more

I had an appointment to see Halley for both a cut & dye. First problem was her stating I did not have an appt for a dye only a cut (I called to confirm as well as messaged her through dm for both). Second, she tells me she cannot do my request of the dye/ cut. I asked to go lighter for the spring/summer and she told me I can only go darker (I have medium brown hair). Third, she says okay no dye and just cut. I told her she was not treating me like a client, that she was only willing to do what she wanted to, and told her I didn't even trust her to cut my hair if she wasn't even willing to work with my hair concerns/ outcomes to begin with. Super Super pricy. I got a digital perm and it was about..$400-500, and the quality of the hair process was thoughtful but also did not reflect the price. I did have maintenance and treatments done after to maintain my perm but it still went away in about 3 months. I got a root perm for around $150, which is pretty pricey for just a root perm imo. They said it will take an hour but it took for 1.5 hours. My hairdresser was tending 3 other people at the same time so service wasn't the best. However, her assistant made sure to check in with me multiple times and even offered me a drink and a snack. They will ask if you want a hair cut or a "trim" say no bc that's an additional $80?? Every time I shower I can still smell a little bit of the chemical...weird bc I've gotten a root perm before at a different spot and that was not the case Also! I've come twice and don't quite love the experience for the price. It's on the higher end for such little focus and attentiveness to the craft. This salon takes too many clients at once. My master level stylist was in between my appointment and like 8 other male perms... that I barely saw her unless she was tending to the set up of my treatment or cutting my hair. Everything else was done by the assistants, which no problem but I thought I paid for "master level." When tipping I left very confused on how much to tip each person because I felt like I spent more time with the assistant and I "should" have tipped her more. read more

I get a lot of blowouts in a lot of cities and this was the most expensive blowout/style I've ever gotten at $80 + tip. And it was pretty basic. I wasn't dissatisfied. It was adequate. But for $80, I'd only return if I were in the middle of a hair emergency. The salon shows quite a bit of wear. I don't need a flashy salon. But I'm curious how the $80 style is justified when the experience from start to finish was so basic and the salon so worn. The staff was all exceptionally polite and professional. I wouldn't deter anyone from coming here. But, I personally chose to look elsewhere when I wanted another blowout. read more

I would definitely not recommend coming here if you're looking to get a perm and do not have Asian textured hair. I came in yesterday and despite getting my hair worked on for a while with many rollers, only the back of my head was done correctly with curls. The rest of my hair was mismanaged to the point where it was chemically STRAIGHTENED and not curled, removing any natural waves that I had. They seem to do Asian perms very well, but from my experience, they don't understand how to perm different textures. I'm not sure where the process went wrong, but this doesn't seem like a case of my hair being difficult. Unfortunately, unlike curl perms, chemically straightening your hair cannot be unchanged and I may have to cut all my hair off. The salon offered to re-perm it, which I declined due to research and other stylists telling me that perming my hair twice one after the other would severely damage my hair. After what happened, I also didn't trust the salon to perm it again. I asked for a refund, and the salon refused, resulting in the stylist offering to pay me back from his own pocket. read more

I have to leave a negative review after two atrocious mistreatments with this salon. First experience: came in for a consultation and the stylist told me the style I wanted (a very simple layered cut) was not possible, at all. I asked him questions and asked if different techniques beyond cutting (root perm, keratin straightening) could help with the look I desired and they brought over Director Ian who told me completely opposite things from the first stylist, that the look was do-able. This was highly confusing and as I asked for clarification they more or less kicked me out and demanded I pay for the consultation ($25). I gave this salon another chance by declining to work with the first male stylist. I tried to communicate with a stylist (Julie) whose english wasn't too good. She called her coworker (blonde, blue contacts) to help translate. When I tried communicating with the coworker the coworker left several times while I was mid-sentence and even yelled at me, "Why don't you ask her?" ("Her" being the other stylist, I am not fluent in Korean). Julie also cancelled our appointment and said she had another client. This salon really does not care about its customers and is an insult to Korean hospitality. This salon doesn't value understanding and even dismisses customers for trying to receive clear communication, communication that is crucial when a customer is trusting a stylist with their image. It is shocking to me that the salon really somehow thinks they are above doing a crucial part of the job by providing clear communication with their customers. The only compliment I can give is there was an older Korean lady with short hair who tried to speak to me in English and further explain things a bit, but that doesn't absolve multiple counts of disrespect and confusion facilitated by multiple stylists at this salon and the Director himself. read more

Got a male perm from the director in his top floor studio in early october for $200+ My immediate impression was that it was a little bit iffy (given how lopsided my hair looked -- there was a super noticeable gap around the 'part' of my hair) HOWEVER, having restyled that initial haircut slightly (just combing over some hair to fill in that gap so that it looks less like two distinct parts). Had an appt for a haircut today, and during the wash, I asked the assistant stylist what the price was for a haircut. She told me it would be starting from $70, and up from there, but to confirm with the stylist. When I sat down at the chair, I asked the stylist, and he told me it's starts at $90, but because I have long hair it would be $100. I was alarmed, because my hair is up to my bra, and wanted -3" cut off. I said, had I known this, I would've went somewhere else. But, needed a haircut so we proceeded. I showed him a photo of what I wanted. And as he got started, I jokingly said, " I hope you make it look good! Especially if I'm paying $100!" He then told me he didn't feel confident or comfortable to cut my hair. WTF?!?! I told him I don't understand how you're a stylist, asking for $100, if you're not confident in cutting someone's hair. He then told me I should find someone else because he doesn't think he can do a good job. I left with my hair dripping down my back, with no haircut. NEVER coming here again. I had experienced a very bad hair cut somewhere else and came here in hopes of getting my hair fixed. I made an appointment for the following day and signed up with Soyoung. The assistant took my coat and gave me a robe to put on. She took me to the hair washing station - shampooed twice, massaged my scalp, and conditioned my hair. Soyoung listened to my predicament all whilst analyzing my hair. Soyoung was attentive and showed me a picture of the back of my head - my hair was super uneven and I could see each individual cut. Soyoung spent time and care on my hair making sure the ends were even, maintained the length, and most importantly the layers were actually blended. The assistant and Soyoung made sure that I did not have any little specks of hair left on my face and shoes. From wash, cut, and styling the total time was roughly 45~ minutes. I paid $110 for my cut (paid in cash) and gave a 20% tip. I will definitely come back and ask for Soyoung again. :') read more

Let me start by saying that I did not expect to walk out of the salon feeling emotional today. I've been dealing with some health issues recently, and frankly, I haven't felt my best. My hair was the last thing I paid attention to. It didn't look bad, it was just overgrown and shapeless. I thought a simple haircut might make me feel better -- clean everything up. I called Salon de Mi, asked for any stylist (no preference), and showed up. Ian was my stylist (did not know he was the director), and off the bat pointed out key areas my hair could be improved on. I'll be honest: I was just expecting a few cuts here and there. After all, I just wanted to freshen up. Ten minutes in, my hair's already looking different. My hair's falling on my face in ways I didn't know it could. Then Ian blow dries my already fabulous hair, and I'm thinking "Wow this was worth it" -- Ian's not done yet. He keeps my hair length while thinning the ends, and gives me amazing face-framing layers I can curl when I wear my hair up. By the end, I don't recognize my hair. I feel like a different person -- someone I haven't seen in a while. A good haircut leaves you feeling beautiful, but a great haircut brings out the best version of yourself. I took my kids to get a haircut, this was our very first time going to this place. The people there were very friendly and overall it was an okay experience. The place was clean and had a good vibe but the price for the haircuts was not worth it. Just for 2 haircuts it costed 80 just for a trim for my son and for my daughter it was 110 for layers When I called the place to ask why it costed so much they told me that the reason for the price was because "the shop is in the west side of Manhattan". I understand if they charged me 80 for layers in Manhattan however it doesn't make sense to charge me 110. Along with the fact that they didn't have any prices in the store. I had to go to the website to see , which is an inconvenient if you didn't know there was a website. I would not recommend this place if you just wanted to cut your hair. I usually get my hair cut once or twice a year so I don't have a salon I usually visit or a stylist I'm familiar with. That being said, I am so surprised that this salon is such high quality. =) Many of the ones I've visited in the past are dirty or careless but Maison de Mi puts a lot of effort into maximizing their client's experience. The establishment is clean & classy and all the hair stylists are focused on their work. I was able to get an appointment on short notice and was taken care of every step of the way by the employees, just like in a movie! The whole process of getting my hair cut and styled was efficient and no longer than an hour. He spent about 20 minutes cutting my hair and less than 10 minutes for the blowdry. I can't really call what I got a blowdry. Sooooo yeah, terrible service. A mediocre haircut. A nonexistent blowdry. At a cost of $110. I still tipped $24 because, as a former waitress, it's hard for me not to tip 20% even when I'm dissatisfied. And ya know what, I was totally dissatisfied. Never again! I was a frequent customer and usually enjoyed my visits. Today was however a huge disappointment. My usual stylist was not on shift today so I went with some other stylists. The nightmare, however, happened when stylist KAY tried to convince me to do a down perm (which I did earlier this year already) in order to get my ideal style I showed in picture. He insisted that otherwise he would have to cut my hair (which I tried to grow for a long while) to slightly shorter to achieve the style. I tried to trust his judgement but his first cut was a disaster that cut my 6-7 cm hair on the side into 1cm. And it was 1cm from lower side to top side, straight line, even not trying to fade or anything. I tried to accept it and sustained the whole process seeing my hair that I grew being cut to a shortest style I had in recent years. I was trying to be polite when he asked me if I liked it and I smiled and said ITS DIFFERENT. He said NO IT'S NOT. He again tried to say that I have to do down perm every time. IT'S OK THAT YOU JUST TELL ME YOU DESIGNED A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT STYLE FOR ME OR THAT YOU TRIED TI REPLCIATE THE STYLE BY CUTTING SIDES VERY SHORT BUT FAILED. But you dared to say it's not different. No offense to other stylists (which are usually fine) in house other than KAY, but I have nothing else to say this time. Got a regular perm here about 5 weeks ago. Stylist told me that I wouldn't need to cut my hair for at least two months...but my hair became fully straight again in 5 weeks. I followed their instructions and everything. I went to ask them what happened, and the lady at the front desk told me that my perm didn't last as long because my hair is long (doesn't make sense to me), and that I should get a digital perm. Google says a perm should last anywhere between 3-6 months, and my stylist friend also agrees. She looked shocked when I told her this. Disappointed in the result since altogether this perm was 200+ and only last 5 weeks. read more

This is a review for Jane Kim at Maison de Mi-- I came in for a consultation and spoke to Jane with the aid of a translator since I don't speak Korean. I wanted a perm with more curls than just slight waves (which is usually harder to do on Asian hair), and I showed her a few reference photos for what I wanted. She was very thorough and honest about what she could do with my hair (which is a bit wavy but pretty fine and silky), and told me she would definitely be able to achieve what I wanted but that it might not last as long as it would on coarser hair. I still wanted it and she was confident she could do it so I came in the next week after scheduling an appointment. The appointment took about as long as predicted at 2.5 hrs, and Jane was very nice, professional, and quick. It was really obvious that she knew what she was doing and her assistant was really sweet and helpful, too. She gave me a really clean haircut first, and then did the perm, taking the sides and back out a little earlier so that the upper layers fell nicely instead of being puffed up by really curly sections below. Overall, really great experience! I would recommend Jane regardless of if you are new or not to getting perms. It was expensive ($240 which I believe is actually average/slightly higher for perms) but worth it! I went in for a haircut and a perm and down perm. The haircut was amazing. I loved it. The perm was cool too. Im leaving a 3 star review because the curls from my perm is gone in less than a week. I asked my hairdresser for post care for the perm to last, and she said not to shampoo or wash the hair for a day. I did that and did not washed it for more than 2 days, and still my hair went back from wavy ti straight.
