I showed him reference photos, and we talked through what would realistically work for my hair and what would look best. He really listened, explained his approach clearly, and communicated throughout the entire process, which made me feel very comfortable and confident. He took his time with the haircut, and the result was amazing. This was also my first perm, and I absolutely love the outcome. I called to ask about appointment availability, and the experience was honestly shocking. The person who answered gave zero professionalism or basic courtesy -- they just hung up on my husband mid-conversation without any explanation. No "we're busy," no "please call back," nothing. Just straight-up hung up. If this is how they treat potential customers before you even book, I can't imagine how they handle actual clients. Customer service says a lot about a business, especially a hair salon where communication and trust matter. I've been getting my haircuts at Kiwa Salon for about a year, but my recent experience was very disappointing. I've been on the waitlist for nearly two months, and when I called today to try to make an appointment and simply asked how long the waitlist currently is, the receptionist was extremely rude. I was told, "Why would I tell you our information?" and then told that I should just go to another hair salon. If this is how long-time customers are treated for asking a basic question, it's hard to understand why anyone would want to continue coming here. I've been a loyal Kiwa customer for probably at least 7-8 years and have used Misaki pretty much the entire time. She is so sweet and ALWAYS knows how to translate the pictures I show her into something I like. I know that when I tell her I only want a trim, that she won't cut TOO much off - (I have had terrible experiences with other places where one inch translates into 2 inches). She is great at cut and color! The only bummer is that I need to learn to call further in advance as she is often fully booked. When I get there, I love that they have Japanese mags (which TBH is probably one of my favorite parts of the visit). They offer a small coffee/tea drink menu and give you a tiny assortment of Japanese candies to enjoy during the service. The shampoo experience is always a treat too - they REALLY do a great job with the head massage. They follow it up with a complimentary massage which is always appreciated. I have tried other Kiwa stylists while Misaki was booked / on maternity leave and I always left kicking myself for not being able to have her do my hair. FYI - I learned they are closing the FIT location and moving back to their other location at the beginning of the year.. and on top of that, Misaki is going out on maternity leave sometime in January and will return sometime in March and on the weekends only to start. read more

I was assigned a senior hair stylist named Oki who charged $95 for my shoulder length haircut, which was fine if the results were at least decent. See attached photo for evidence--notice the abruptness of the cut at the bottom. The other side was not much better, either. This was after I had pointed it out to him and he still could not see my point so I had to capture it on my phone and drew a line along the bottom to show how it was pin straight along the back but it sloped downwards all of a sudden, creating a really weird angle I did not request. Mr. Oki was also annoyed that I pointed out the inadequacy. His body language (making a face while turning away) and verbal language ("Oh, so you did not want it straight then? .. So, you did not want an angle then? ... So, you actually want more layers?") showed it. Oh, he also ever-so-lightly touched my right breast three times as he cut the front parts. Three times, it happened. Intentional? Customers, you be the judge. Two words: Take Heed. Unless, you want to have to correct the haircut, not once, but twice, and you want your breast touched during a (bad) haircut. *One star, because the lady who shampooed and assisted with coloring was friendly and helpful. read more

When my stylist retired and sold his Union Square shop, I tried different salons in the city but was disappointed - until I found Kiwa and Oki. Oki is a new top stylist and has the amazing talent to cut and style hair exactly the way you describe that you want it to be. This is a near impossible feat and one I've found to be incredibly rare in NYC despite the plethora of hair stylists. The dual hair blow dry is a treat as is the massage after a relaxing hair wash. At Kiwa, they take your time washing your locks unlike some spots that do a slam bam dunk rinse that makes you feel like you're in a drive through car wash instead of a chi chi salon. If you have an extended treatment, you'll get a cup of tea while waiting and listening to Japanese pop music. I've been going there for my haircuts and recently I decided to get a digital perm. The first time they permed it (end of august), it was still super loose so they asked me to go back again to get it redone. I went back early September (1.5 weeks later) and now it's been two months and my perm is essentially nonexistent. I'm not sure if the process is the problem or my hair but regardless, it's a little disappointing to have paid 250 or so for the process and have it last less than 2 months. I have been here since late 2010 or early 2011, can't remember correctly. My stylist is the previous director, Ken. He is very experienced and really amazing at catching the nature of your hair and providing an outstanding service for hair cutting and styling. Ken left NYC and is now back to Japan for good - he's now at Kiwa Tokyo and I would like to surprise him by showing up there one day in the future. I am now with a senior stylist Kiwa recommended me who's also very experienced, Misaki. I have heard about her and seen her in action in past years, but since I am very happy with Ken, I had never thinking of switching stylist for hair cut. Misaki is amazing. I showed up with a very bad hair condition - ombre and balayage from last summer from another salon, and style with straighten iron and curling iron daily. My hair looks horrible if I don't use iron that day. It's overall very damage, especially the part with highlights. Mistake spend total around 1.5 hours to explain and communicate with me for the style I would like, and then she showed me how good she is. She sticked with my wish and created a great look based on my hair condition - trim the damaged ends away, layers the whole hair to create fuller look on top, under the condition that there are lots of breakdown all around my hair. Now I am happy and refresh, and still keep some of the nice ombre and balayage from last year. I highly recommend Misaki. PS: Kiwa is now requesting to pay tips in cash. Incredible experience here with Oki, the new Top Stylist who will be working at their upcoming location, Kiwa East at 201 East 23rd Street, 2nd floor. Phone: 646-678-3078 I was so pleased to have had my consultation & digital perm with Oki. The consultation with quick and honest, and Oki really spends the time to get to know you and your hair. The prices are definitely expensive but you're paying for the experience and top quality service! Because Oki is a Top Stylist, the prices were $180 perm + $60 haircut + $10 hair length on top of another 15-20% tip. Good thing they take cards! Keep in mind, it's always nice to tip in cash so the stylists can walk away with the money right away. I can't rave enough about Oki. He's extremely patient (I was late), and talented at cutting and styling hair precisely the way you want it. He gives excellent suggestions and is extremely thorough and easy to talk to. He decided to have my curls smaller so my perm would last longer, which was very thoughtful. Taishi, one of the assistants there is also very friendly and does a great job washing your hair and offering courteous service in terms of checking up on you or bringing you tea/water/coffee. In the end, I walked away with a medium length layered hair style and beautiful curls that I know will stay for a while and continue to look gorgeous as my hair grows out in the next few months! 2 days after my digi perm! So after finding Kiwa on Yelp, I booked an appointment for last Thursday. I got a digital perm ($175) and a haircut ($55 + extra for long hair) with a 10% tip it was ~245 w/o tip. I didn't have any problem getting there, though I suggest you get there 10-20 mins early for your appointment. When I walked in, I was immediately greeted and the receptionist took my coat/scarf and bag. I was escorted to a seat and greeted by Misaki in English. I had no problem communicating so that was great! The shampoo by the assistant felt amazing, and after Misaki finished cutting my hair, it looked fantastic! (So good that I was tempted to not get the perm I was so satisfied with the haircut!). Then the perm process began, and Misaki and her assistant rolled away. I was a bit disapointed Misaki only did a third of the rolling (busy with another customer), and her assistant finished the rest. The assistant took the curls out at the end as well. Throughout this, I was offered tea, water, and small candies (as well as an amazing short massage by the assistant!). The assistant also asked how I was doing every so often, and was there to answer any questions that I had. The entire process took about 3 1/2 hours (cut and perm) and everyone was so nice! I was a bit hesitant at first because the price of a perm was more than I expected but I wanted to go for a new look ($175 perm + $55 haircut + $30 for hair length). They required I go in for a hair consultation before scheduling an appointment. The consultation was very nice and honest. I showed up with several photos of celebrity haircuts and perms that I wanted for my hair and they said they couldn't do most of them because the effect I wanted could only be done by a curling iron. I've had wave perms before but never a digital perm. They hooked up each individual curler to a wire that was connected to a machine, which heated the curlers. VERY COOL! They didn't offer me a cup of water nor did they massage my scalp like other reviewers had said. I was also very exhausted after sitting for 4 hours to get the digital perm done and they didn't really offer to do anything to make it more relaxing for me...but at the end of the day, I left the hair salon with a beautiful haircut and perm! It's located in a 2nd floor shared space next to Sleepy's. They have a very minimalistic/modern décor thing going on. Upon entering, you're greeted by a person who takes your coats and bags and checks them - very professional people. Everyone who works here is Japanese, but speaks fairly good English. Since it was my first time at Kiwa, I took advantage of their 30% off special (haircut + digital perm) for $168, which is really a steal. My appointment was with Oki, who is a top stylist at the salon. He took time to show me different perm styles in the various books and magazines they had and I finally chose one. After that, he evaluated my hair and made some suggestions, like putting more layers in the front so the curls show up better. He took time cutting my hair and though I can't really tell how it looks since I got a perm, I'm sure he did a fine job since I like my hair at the moment! The digital perm was an experience - they use a Shiseido machine and not those crazy contraptions that some places use. A couple of the rollers got really hot, but they were accommodating and helped put more foam barriers between the rollers and my hair. It was an interesting experience - I didn't know getting a digital perm involved washing your hair 3 times, plus the shampoo before the cut. While waiting, I was served a choice of tea, coffee, or green tea and a few candies - the green tea was actually really good and came in the cutest little teacup. Eventually, I was freed of the rollers and given a blow dry and a little bit of spraying wax. I loved the results! Now let's just see how long this lasts. I would recommend Kiwa Salon as they are professional, friendly, and priced reasonably. Great service all around. read more

I needed to get my hair done bc I had to attend a wedding and found Kiwa Salon on yelp. It was just 2 blocks from my hotel which was perfect bc I wasn't about to catch a cab or take the subway just to get my hair done. Also, I always go to Asian salons, so Kiwa being a Japanese salon, was the perfect choice. I made an appointment a month in advance and emailed them photos of what I wanted for an up-do. Akito, the owner, called me back and we discussed the style and price. I wanted to keep the cost to $50 and he said that would be fine. Kiwa Salon is located in the building next to FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology). There is a huge sign on the side of the brick wall. However, I walked passed it initially bc Moda cafe next to it had a huge sign and I got distracted by it. Just remember that Kiwa is directly next to Moda. It is a small salon, cozy salon with 6 chairs. Once I stepped in there, I felt like I was in Japan. The stylists are super trendy and hip. They all speak Japanese. It's very fitting that this salon would be located in the Fashion District. Every chair was filled and it looked like a very popular place to get your hair done for the hip gals and guys. I was about 10 min early but my stylist, Yuka was ready once my appointment time had arrived. She showed me the pics I had sent on her iphone and also some pics of how she had practiced the up-do on a model. That really impressed me. At that point, I pretty much let her take over bc I trusted that she would do a great job (and she did). There was a girl that was an apprentice that helped Yuka and some of the other stylist. The apprentice was cute and clumsy as I watched her drop a hairdryer and a curler but she was very polite. In the end, my up-do was just what I wanted. My appointment took an hour which was just the time frame that I had expected. Yuka also gave me some 10% off cards after I had paid. Written two weeks after I had a color treatment done. I had an appointment made with Oki for an ombré treatment. My hair was never treated before and I was nervous going in. Oki was very nice and walked me through the process and gave me a good estimate of how long I'd be there and how much it would be. I also had a trim before my color treatment started; Oki was so gentle with my hair. It had been a while since I've been to a salon and he could tell His assistant was also very nice, and asked me every so often if everything was OK. After the second round of bleaching and coloring, I had a final round of shampoo. The result was so much better than I could've asked for and I was speechless. I got my digital perm 3 days ago by Misaki (who is gorgeous btw). I've uploaded a pic on Kiwa's yelp page so you can see the results. Time: It was a 3 hour ordeal so bring a book or be prepared to be bored. Price: The total was $250 (not including tip)-- $55 haircut, $20 for "long hair" and $175 for the digital perm. Just FYI, they might recommend a haircut if they feel your hair is too heavy to hold a curl or for whatever other reason. While the haircut is completely optional, I recommend you get it anyway. First, if you're already spending $175 on the perm, then go ahead and spend the extra $55 to ensure better results. Second, Misaki does a good job on cutting hair. Results: I wish the curls were more defined. A good portion of my hair is "straight with a flair." As you can tell from my picture, some of my hair is straight with a slight crimp. This is even after I diligently followed their after-care instructions, which was (1) not washing my hair for 48 hours, even though they said you could after 24 hours; (2) curling sections of my hair with my finger after I shower; and (3) not brushing out my hair, so what gives? However, I'm satisfied with the results because my hair has more shape and volume than it did previously. Comparison: I probably recommend Kiwa over OZ, where I got a digital perm last year. While OZ gave me big bouncy curls, the chemicals they used might have been inferior or harsher because my hair quality really suffered. Despite not being as curly, my hair looks better after my perm at Kiwa... I don't know if it's the haircut or the digital perm but either way, it looked better than before. read more

I sat back, rifling through my reading materials...waiting and staring at the clock that seemed to move, but with little movement from my stylist or his assistant. Twenty minutes passed..I waited and continued to wait. No peep from anyone as I sat, as sweat formed on my brow from the heat of the layers and the warmth of the salon. No offer for water...I have never been in prison, but I felt close to it. Even weathering the rain and wind outside, I had dragged myself away from the warm and creature comforts of my apartment, coming on time thinking that it would be a quick touch-up. As my previous visit was pleasant, I had good expectations. My stylist had cut my hair and I was out of the salon in an hour. This time around was another story. As minutes passed, I stripped off the layers...dragged my feet to the front desk. Politely told them that I had waited...and their first reflex was to ask for my cell number. Considering this not a good sign, I told them that I was leaving. As long as you make a reservation a few days in advance, they always seem to have openings. I had my hair cut a few weeks ago by a lovely gentleman at this location. I don't recall his name, but he did a really quick and thorough job with everything from the washing to the blowdrying. I was really happy with the end result. Yay, i finally found my default salon in NY! Even though I live near ktown (with an endless amount of salons), I really got the feeling that Kiwa appreciates customer loyalty and really takes their time to make sure you leave feeling happy and pampered. The shine of the salon doesn't matter, but the details in the customer service will definitely win you over! I arrived for my pre-scheduled appointment and they took down my information, and re-iterated that I was going to receive a 30% discount off my haircut and a free Japanese conditioning treatment for their August special. I really appreciate that preface you with every step of your visit in a soft, polite manner. My stylist Musashi was always speaking Japanese phrases here and there, but I could still understand him completely. Not to mention he was wearing a casual two-piece plaid outfit that I wish I could pull off, with curly shoulder-length hair that none of my guy friends would be able to pull off. That guy has ~~*style*~~ I showed him a photo of a hairstyle I liked, explained what I wanted, and he asked that I email the photo to the salon email. Then I was taken to the washing station where my hair was shampooed and conditioned thoroughly... my scalp felt wonderful and for that moment I forgot all the things I had to get done at home hehe. It was even better when the assistant offered me a shoulder massage which felt amazing and strong despite her soft appearance. Musashi listened to all my requests (soft layering, no razor, etc) and then even recommended that I should have my hair thinned, which is something that I had always thought about to myself! Even more so, he thinned mostly on my left side, which definitely has more hair, so you can tell he definitely looks at your head objectively and doesn't just apply the same cut to everyone~ Additionally, he really paid attention to the natural segments of my hair because he cut the layers using a technique I hadn't experienced before at other salons. I am super happy with the cut. I smell great~~. My hair looks nice and neat. Was referred to Kiwa Salon by a close friend of mine and loved my experience here. Although I wasn't able to book with my friend's preferred stylist due to high demend, the salon recommended me to go with Oki. Upon arriving the salon, Oki was very attentive and took the time to understand the hair style I want and how I normally care for my hair.
