Totally agree with the one-star reviews about the apprentice experience. If I could give zero stars, I would. The haircut was agreed upon(classic bob) in advance between the stylist, and myself, with photo references before the appointment. There is also a small cash fee plus tip, so it's not free. I made it very clear what I did NOT want in terms of cut and length. Despite that, the stylist--who was being overseen by a mentor stylist (Damian?) was instructed to use a razor to cut my hair. I later realized this was mentioned in other reviews, which I wish I had read beforehand. There was NO discussion about how the haircut we agreed upon could CHANGE based on what her mentor thinks. I trusted that supervision by a more experienced stylist would ensure a good outcome, but that wasn't the case. The apprentice (Yenny) was not comfortable using the razor and kept cutting and cutting until I finally asked her to stop! The final result looked nothing like the reference photos - so much shorter and layered and somewhat old lady-ish as is the whole salon. Part 1: A few years ago, my personal friends connected me with a colorist who happens to be on staff at Mizu. While I didn't particularly care for the salon, it was near my house and I was very fond of the colorist. I had gotten keratin many times at other places until one day I decided to try the keratin treatment that Mizu offered and highly recommended. When the LASIO keratin treatment caused a severe allergic reaction, I contacted the manufacturer directly only to realize that Mizu didn't follow the manufacturer guidelines for applying the product safely. Mizu skipped the last required step of the process and did not wash the product out of my hair. My experience matched that of another review posted here a few years prior to my very own experience. At mizu I was advised to wash my hair 2-3 days post treatment for better results. However, according to LASIO, their product should be washed off at the time of treatment and should never be left on longer than 24 hours. LASIO sincerely apologized, offered to reimburse my unforeseen medical expenses and suggested re-training the staff at Mizu on how to properly and safely perform the treatment. Mizu, on the other hand, replied to my email with a warning instead of an apology: if I choose to get a refund for my services (which I didn't ask for in the first place), I will not be able to continue seeing my colorist and will be removed as a client. For context, I have been a color client at Mizu for a few years prior to booking a keratin appointment with a keratin stylist and specialist. After experiencing such a blackmail attempt I decided to request a refund and moved on to find a better alternative at a different salon. Part 2: Months later I learned that my incident wasn't an isolated case but rather the standard operating procedure at Mizu. Part 3: My daughter also became a client of Mizu's shortly after I began seeing their colorist. Months after I was banned for voicing my concern about the dangerous service that I received, my daughter was supposed to visit Mizu for a color appointment. Her appointment was cancelled by Mizu via text on the grounds that we share the last name and therefore she is not welcome to return to the salon. Apparently just being related to me, a former Mizu client who received shockingly poor services from Mizu in the past, puts my independent adult daughter on Mizu's blacklist. read more

Not recommend. A year ago I was think that Im just unlucky women when they put blond color on my hear and have of my hear was in hand assistant. When I ask her what is going on, she just was beautifuly smiling. After time I back there and changed color person. Today had reservation, for this reason changed my flight from Miami yearly , appointment went like a few months ago- the same but a new person of course and the same routines of coloration . But colorist said your appointment time to short I can't work with you, you need waiting hour because she had next costumer. A person in front desk was mistaken when I booked and they just throw me out. For reasonable questions from me - is it I'm not costumer here ? Ok, short .-- bad stuff can't happened twice. My experience, 2020-07-08: I have baby fine & thinning hair I had long got clipped #2 with a couple inches on top at a barber. It was a workable approach - youthful but lacking in masculine warmth. Because COVID, I didn't get a cut for 4 months and started wondering what might be possible if I saw a top notch stylist. I did my research and found that Vaughn has styled an unbelievable number of famous people yet seemed (in online media) to carry himself as a human being like (most of!) the rest of us. So I made the appointment. It was not cheap and I told him off the bat I couldn't afford to see him on a regular basis - but I absolutely got my money's worth. He gave me exactly what I had hoped for and I've had no problem styling it myself to look just as good as it did when I left, using a single paste product (his, but having used others I don't believe that's it; - it's the cut, plus me observing how he used the product). He told me the cut would last 6-8 weeks versus 3 for what I was doing before. And he introduced me to a stylist in the salon charging a lower rate. I am so disappointed on what Louis, the and Mizu, salon has become:( You know it's bad when your colorist is telling you that you should just keep the grace. Why would you make appointment to a hair salon if you want to keep your gray hair and you're in your 40s does that make any sense. I think Covid has made them really lazy I've given them two chances to correct the problem and they're done such a poor job they didn't even charge me for even the blowout. "Your hair is effed," a hair stylist said to me the other day, looking at my haircut from this salon. And I was sincerely grateful for this confirmation. I came for a weekly class that I found on Salon Apprentice. Please let me get this out now and say that I was fully aware that my hair was in the hands of an apprentice. So, clearly, I knew what I was going for. But I still had a very unpleasant experience. The apprentice did not take anything into consideration. Whether I style my hair on a regular basis, where I like to part my hair - she parted it on the wrong side, and I cannot change it because it will create a strong imbalance between the sides thanks to her skills. She framed my face when doing layers, and chopped off a VERY thick chunk of my hair in the front and did not blend it in. It looks like someone started cutting my hair shoulder length and stopped. When I said that she was taking off too much, she said that it was all dead and PROCEEDED. My hair is very long, and it will take years for this lousy "face frame" to grow out. It felt like she was barely understanding what I was saying to her the whole way. My guidance about my own hair was completely dismissed by both her and her supervisor. Speaking of the supervisor - he would literally cut me off when I would try to make a remark on something. I felt very uncomfortable about it. The sad part is, I described the situation to the salon through their Contact Us form, and never got any sort of response. I do not know if the apprentice was explained that she HAS TO talk to her customer about what they want and not do what she thinks is right. I was greeted and changed into a black robe which is when I met Adam who washed my hair as well. He was being overseen by one of the owners. I asked if he could give me a certain style and he said he didn't think it would work with my hair - which I appreciate! I prefer honesty and I'm glad he was transparent on what could be done. The stylists are super sweet and helpful, and will really concentrate on figuring out what is exactly you want for your hair, and explaining to you how they can do that in a way that is best for your hair type, basically just going back and forth on it until it sounds just right to you. One good thing is if you have never been there before you do a quick survey and get $25 off your visit. So I said why not, I will splurge on a wash, cut and blow dry with someone who is an "artist"...they book me with Dominick and I am excited. I walk in and am greeted by a super friendly receptionist who points me upstairs to coat check with another super friendly attendant who gives me a robe to put on...and then I plop down on the couch to wait. Granted, I did get there a little early but called them and they said to come in early. So I am waiting, waiting, waiting...turned down a few offers of water...waiting, waiting, waiting. Amused at old jewish hair cutter taking forever to blow dry his client because he has alot of funny stories. Another stylist who is a spanish girl with curly blonde hair asks who I am waiting for, so I tell her and she said well he will be right out...waiting, waiting, waiting. She finally takes pity on me and washes my hair for me since I have been waiting at that point for half an hour. I sit down in the stylists chair and I am finally graced by Dominick's presence and what do I hear...that he was busy looking up things for his New Year's Eve party (I went December 30th) and "lost track of time". He was not very apologetic about it and I was quite frankly not in the best of moods after that, he asked me what I wanted...I said I wanted something that kept my length but maybe a few more layers but I told him to just use his imagination because I was not picky. He made a few more comments about my hair...like did you notice the back is a little shorter than the front, no it's the back of my hair I didn't notice that and I have no idea why my previous stylist did it. I mentioned that I did a Brazilian blow out as well and he gave me a look like if I was a moron and said why would you do it with your hair type and so many of my clients have complained about it and why again would you do it....well I just wanted to try it out, sorry for making a hair faux pas. After that I just tuned out and read my Kindle, I got two products sold to me. And he mentioned for me to leave my robe on the chair he would get it and then just walked away from me, there have been very few times I did not want to tip someone for a service and this was one of it...but it was the holidays, I wasn't going to be a scumbag. I got a de-tangler and a dry shampoo, plus my wash, style and blow dry was $250 with the $25 coupon. After that, I saw my sister and said don't you like my hair she said oh you got it done...it looks exactly like it did before, maybe bouncier? My bf pretty much said the same, I should have stuck to my hair dresser in Brooklyn who charges a fraction of the price makes my hair look much better. read more

It's been some time since I wrote my first review for Mizu. My love for it has not abated--only dimensionalized! After so many years coloring at Mizu, but cutting elsewhere, I took Nico's suggestion to try Steven DiCarlo--and it's a love match! Steven takes a thoughtful approach to his craft, teasing out of me what works for me, and has managed to make my generous head full of very fine hair actually look smashing--like "let's go buy a new lipstick and get this coif on the streets" smashing. Like Nico, Steven is sweet, personable, and seems to know where to go when I drop myself in his chair, saying, "Do something with this!" I watch how he turns out other clients, knowing he possesses a special kind of magic that makes you look forward to getting done by him. And what more can I say about Nico? He's truly the color whisperer. Don't like your color game? Put yourself in his hands; he's a master. Mizu continues to be a sexy little spot to which you can escape, and feel like a million walking out. Much credit is due Vaughn, who understands how to manage/keep talent, and create a welcoming space that reflects his own warmth and professionalism. The man in my life loves his V76 products, so again, there isn't a grooming ritual for which Vaughn doesn't have ultra-keen instincts. I went in for a cool toned balayage as a hair model with Melanie and ended up with an brassy ombré with no color transition at all. There's a very clear line between my natural and colored hair. She tried curling my hair after but it didn't work out well and my hair was put into braids in the end, which is why I wasn't able to see my new hair color properly until 2 days later after I washed my hair. I emailed Melanie and the manager Megan after that with a picture of my current hair condition and the picture that I originally showed her and asked for. Melanie's reply was quite rude and she insisted that we both agreed on the picture, which is true, except that my hair is not even close to that picture at all. I am a Hair Stylist from L.A. I am both Italian, Sasson trained by 2 different masters who both have very high regards of NYC Hair People. Therefore, I expect to learn a lot from some of high end NYC salons. My close friend decided to try out this place and I took the opportunity to observe. God, I was really not impressed at all!!!!!! One of the owner was doing a razor/scissors cut on medium length hair and another stylist did a Sasson technique style haircut. The Sasson style haircut was only okay at best because there was no design and the skill was very outdated, blow dry was terrible. The owner's haircut ended up a outdated lousy mall housewife hairstyle and one side was so obviously heavier. His layering was beauty school level which means only 2 dimensional lines and super basic sectioning. He has this look like he is painting a master piece artwork but his razor shredding is making me so sad. I ended up have to fixed my poor friend's haircut all over. I think it was one of the so-call director who did her hair. Thank goodness my friend is well off with money and I feel so bad. Where are the real masters with real skills? We discussed a bob that would be given movement with some layering. After our discussion, however, the dirty-fingernails, seemingly impaired or hungover, unkempt instructor took over and turned my intended cut into an asymmetric high-fashion look. I have nothing against cutting-edge styles, but that is not what the apprentice and I discussed. The entire approach to the cut was very random -- cut a little here, then flip my hair around, cut a little over there... I felt like a wig on a stylist's mannequin. And, since my cut is uneven, I now have the opportunity to practice trimming my own hair. Every salon should demonstrate respect for clients by mandating staff cleanliness and crystal clear communication -- in that regard,my experience at Mizu was a flop. *Note: other staff seemed groomed, and acted professionally, but one rotten apple... read more

Woah, enter the nicest salon I have ever been to. Okay the bumble in meatpacking gives this place a run for it's money but Mizu salon is N-I-C-E! I think they use more natural products so my shampoo and condition left my hair shiny and bouncy. I got a great cut and my stylist gave me one of the best blowouts EVER. I am singing the praises of Aya. The woman is a miracle worker. What led me to her? I walked into an aunt's office at work days prior and was greeted with the following sentence, verbatim: "You're hair looks terrible. When's the last time you had a haircut?" (Thanks, dear aunt. I love you too. By the way, "Good afternoon.) Less than 10 minutes later, she was on the phone scheduling an appointment for me with Aya, her treat, the next morning. This particular aunt of mine has been letting Aya cut her hair for more than seven years now, so I felt at ease immediately. I knew I was about to reap the benefits of her insult. (Ha!) Mizu is a bright, clean, and bustling salon quietly nestled on Park Avenue, with a welcoming and professional staff. Everything is very streamlined with little confusion. Water and tea are offered, including about a dozen different varieties of Harney organic tea. (Nice.) The music was good; typical "salon" music, with some Stevie Wonder and Gaelle in the mix. My 11:45 a.m. appointment started a few minutes late, but I could see Aya feverishly finishing up her previous client. It was no matter to me. Hair washed, I sat in my chair with Aya. "Let's talk", she said. I did. Two inches off all around to clean my hair up, layers cut back in as they had grown out, angle the front, and clean up my bangs. I part my hair to the right and sweep my bangs to the left. Would you like to know how my hair turned out. She took off two inches all around to clean my hair up. She cut my layers back in as they had grown out. She cleaned up my bangs. She parted my hair to the right. She cut my bangs so I could easily sweep them to the left. Yes. Some stylists listen when you talk to them. It's true! Not only did Aya cut my hair the way I wanted it, but she was nit-picky, which I use the most complimentary way. She was not about to let any stray hair ruin what she had just crafted. She snipped and clipped until her masterpiece was completed. She did "scold" me, because I was honest and told her that the last time I had my bangs trimmed, I did it myself because I didn't have time to go to a salon to get them cleaned up. *blush* I took the scolding with good humor. She's absolutely right! Normally I don't do that...which is why my bangs look amazing for the first time in about three months! My head literally felt lighter when I stepped outside. She put NO product in my hair, yet my hair was straight and glossy in the end. WOW. If you want to treat yourself to a great cut and have a few extra dollars to spend, I'd absolutely suggest coming here. Great staff. Great environment. Ask for Aya. Yes sometimes (not often) it gets busy or slightly backed up but it's a salon people.... Unless you want them to screw your hair up sometimes ya have to wait 5-15 minutes! Originally I followed Kerry Resnick from Joseph Martin Salon (now closed) to Mizu... Love the atmosphere, vibe, and products. I have to dedicate this review to the apprentice who did my hair. Grabbed my hair, took a pair of scissors and CHOP. 6 inches gone. I went in asking for a short hairstyle - short but not too short, just enough to tie it back into a ponytail. Came out with a long layered bobish sort of look - somewhat of a long bob. The apprentice was extremely attentive. I can definitely tell that the salon goes above and beyond it's duty of not just doing what the customer wants, but what suits the customer. At one point during the cut, the apprentice was "shaping" my hair so that it fits my bone structure and profile. I told them that I'm very low maintenance and prefer not to style my hair everyday. I walked out of the salon with my hair light, free and unstyled - exactly the way I wanted and more. read more

So, I've only even been here for color and have always gone to see Melissa, first when she was just a student and now that she's the real deal. She is AMAZING. It took me a long time to find a colorist I was comfortable with and who really got what I was going for. Melissa is super creative and responsive to what her clients want. By creative I mean she can do crazy colors and all that stuff, but she also knows how to make small changes that go a long way to enhance your natural look. By responsive, I mean she is constantly paying attention not only to what you say you want, but also to your reactions to her work. She remembers your preferences which gives you more incentive to keep going back! No need to re-explain everything each time. Do not be a mizu hair model there with Austin because you will sit for 4 hours and the finishing product will look like nothing. He was supervised and had some ugly, overweight witch comment on everything he was doing wrong constantly. Instead of supervising him to make sure he DID not make a mistake, she just popped in on occassion and said, "Well you really should have done it this way." "See now she is going to have a dark spot in the back." Um instead of going to take a snack break maybe you should be watching him if he is clueless. There is obviously a reason why they are not busy and super booked in there because they suck. I am very glad that I came to MIZU yesterday to get my hair cut. Lily is outstanding! She told me in advance, in detail, what she intended to do, and I immediately felt reassured that I was in good hands. I am extremely pleased by how my hair cut turned out! Everyone at MIZU was really nice and courteous. The salon itself is nicely designed, with two floors. It's centrally located in the heart of midtown at 59th and Park Avenue. The prices were very reasonable especially considering the top tier level of service and skill you are getting. I've been to some very well known salons like Henri Bendel and Frederic Fekkai, and I am very glad that I gave MIZU a try. Melissa is literally the only colorist I trust with my hair. I have dark, Asian hair and she is able to make it all sorts of crazy colors. She is willing to work for hours to make sure it's precise and perfect. She will never cut corners or "cheat" to get the colors you ask for. She absolutely understands what a customer wants and knows how to give it to you, even providing you with an extra pizazz. Aya is the sweetest! I went to mizu on New Year's Eve and Aya gave my lifeless haven't-been-cut-in-a-year-hair ooh lala oomph and volume that I'd never thought I see on my overgrown flat hair. When she gave me a $50 off card and told me to come back for a much needed haircut I happily made my appointment and left mizu feeling fabulous. I rescheduled my appointment 2x and pushed it back 45 minutes that day of and the girls at mizu were super sweet and never gave me a hint of attitude. Definitely no pretentiousness here! Aya meticulously cut layers into my long mono length hair and kept the bottom layer long exactly as I had asked. The result was lively bouncy hair that was soft to the touch and soo sexy, my boyfriend said it was gorgeous. Needless to say, I'll be coming back to visit Aya, especially now that my new job is right down the block! read more
