Part 1: A few years ago, my personal friends connected me with a colorist who happens to be on staff at Mizu. While I didn't particularly care for the salon, it was near my house and I was very fond of the colorist. I had gotten keratin many times at other places until one day I decided to try the keratin treatment that Mizu offered and highly recommended. When the LASIO keratin treatment caused a severe allergic reaction, I contacted the manufacturer directly only to realize that Mizu didn't follow the manufacturer guidelines for applying the product safely. Mizu skipped the last required step of the process and did not wash the product out of my hair. My experience matched that of another review posted here a few years prior to my very own experience. At mizu I was advised to wash my hair 2-3 days post treatment for better results. However, according to LASIO, their product should be washed off at the time of treatment and should never be left on longer than 24 hours. LASIO sincerely apologized, offered to reimburse my unforeseen medical expenses and suggested re-training the staff at Mizu on how to properly and safely perform the treatment. Mizu, on the other hand, replied to my email with a warning instead of an apology: if I choose to get a refund for my services (which I didn't ask for in the first place), I will not be able to continue seeing my colorist and will be removed as a client. For context, I have been a color client at Mizu for a few years prior to booking a keratin appointment with a keratin stylist and specialist. After experiencing such a blackmail attempt I decided to request a refund and moved on to find a better alternative at a different salon. Part 2: Months later I learned that my incident wasn't an isolated case but rather the standard operating procedure at Mizu. Part 3: My daughter also became a client of Mizu's shortly after I began seeing their colorist. Months after I was banned for voicing my concern about the dangerous service that I received, my daughter was supposed to visit Mizu for a color appointment. Her appointment was cancelled by Mizu via text on the grounds that we share the last name and therefore she is not welcome to return to the salon. Apparently just being related to me, a former Mizu client who received shockingly poor services from Mizu in the past, puts my independent adult daughter on Mizu's blacklist.

Vaughn is a master of his craft with a warm and welcoming delivery. Mizu Salon offers the excellence you expect from a Park Avenue address with zero pretense - they are here to make anyone who walks in look great. My experience, 2020-07-08: I have baby fine & thinning hair I had long got clipped #2 with a couple inches on top at a barber. It was a workable approach - youthful but lacking in masculine warmth. Because COVID, I didn't get a cut for 4 months and started wondering what might be possible if I saw a top notch stylist. I did my research and found that Vaughn has styled an unbelievable number of famous people yet seemed (in online media) to carry himself as a human being like (most of!) the rest of us. So I made the appointment. It was not cheap and I told him off the bat I couldn't afford to see him on a regular basis - but I absolutely got my money's worth. He gave me exactly what I had hoped for and I've had no problem styling it myself to look just as good as it did when I left, using a single paste product (his, but having used others I don't believe that's it; - it's the cut, plus me observing how he used the product). He told me the cut would last 6-8 weeks versus 3 for what I was doing before. And he introduced me to a stylist in the salon charging a lower rate. I will definitely try to find a way to return to Mizu, whether with Vaughn or colleagues. Best haircut of my life.

A few days later from a side

"Your hair is effed," a hair stylist said to me the other day, looking at my haircut from this salon. And I was sincerely grateful for this confirmation. I came for a weekly class that I found on Salon Apprentice. Please let me get this out now and say that I was fully aware that my hair was in the hands of an apprentice. So, clearly, I knew what I was going for. But I still had a very unpleasant experience. The apprentice did not take anything into consideration. Whether I style my hair on a regular basis, where I like to part my hair - she parted it on the wrong side, and I cannot change it because it will create a strong imbalance between the sides thanks to her skills. She framed my face when doing layers, and chopped off a VERY thick chunk of my hair in the front and did not blend it in. It looks like someone started cutting my hair shoulder length and stopped. When I said that she was taking off too much, she said that it was all dead and PROCEEDED. My hair is very long, and it will take years for this lousy "face frame" to grow out. It felt like she was barely understanding what I was saying to her the whole way. My guidance about my own hair was completely dismissed by both her and her supervisor. Speaking of the supervisor - he would literally cut me off when I would try to make a remark on something. I felt very uncomfortable about it. The sad part is, I described the situation to the salon through their Contact Us form, and never got any sort of response. I do not know if the apprentice was explained that she HAS TO talk to her customer about what they want and not do what she thinks is right. And for now, I'm left to live the next few years with half shoulder length hair and half below waist long hair. And the part on the wrong side. Amazing.

What a wonderful salon! The stylists are super sweet and helpful, and will really concentrate on figuring out what is exactly you want for your hair, and explaining to you how they can do that in a way that is best for your hair type, basically just going back and forth on it until it sounds just right to you. They focus on perfecting it to the last detail and clearly take pride in making their works of (hair) art perfect. I love how my hair came out, and will be coming back!

Got my hair colored by Tenzin and she was the absolute best! Tenzin and her team were really patient as I literally went from jet black to silver and the final result was amazing. I got the look I wanted for Coachella and I was SUPER HAPPY!

I got a great haircut from Judy. Wasn't sure if this place was gonna be too stuck up because of address. But everyone was nice and I got a precise haircut. Which is what I was looking for

Appointments became rushed, started late, and lacked even basic professionalism. You're barely greeted when you walk in, and the overall tone makes it feel like you're inconveniencing them just by being there. I told them multiple times I had a head injury from a concussion and the lack of care was very concerning how abrasively they washed and handled my head. My most recent appointment was a complete failure. I asked for a warm, golden brown and came prepared with multiple reference photos. While the color was processing, I clearly flagged that it was pulling purple. That concern was dismissed, and the product was left on longer. The result was the darkest my hair has ever been, almost black with a cool, purple hue. The exact opposite of what I requested. The color job is all mismatched, the lower part of my hair significantly darker, the roots are sloppy and uneven. When I pointed this out, the response was defensive and dismissive. At one point, I was sarcastically asked if I wanted to "bleach it," which is an inappropriate and careless suggestion for already fine hair. It was mind blowing to have this handled so poorly and then be rushed through a cut that does not look anywhere close to the quality of the past cuts. I followed up requesting a refund, given that this will take months to correct and fade, and received no response for over 48 hours. It's not even about the money - it's about the severe lack of respect. What's most surprising is that this level of defensiveness and lack of accountability was unacceptable, especially after such a grave mistake. Instead of thoughtful adjustment and ownership, the response was dismissive in the moment and silent afterward. Mistakes happen. How they're handled is what defines a business. This was not handled well. NYC has no shortage of salons that can deliver both technical skill and professionalism. This is not one of them. Updating this with a pic and additional NYC HAIR SALON SEO terms so future customers are warned since the salon has decided to block me after no satisfactory resolution. The pic at the top right was me pre-hair f*** up. Only come to this salon if you'd like to come home and cry.

This was their "best advice for me" and that I should come back and get both together. I only needed a haircut and this was the only chance I got (I am a SAHM with 2 kids and minimal backup except this day) so I said I would consider it but I need a cut now. It was 6 months since my last. That must have just not been the right thing to say bc I was judged, insulted during the entire session and I got the worst haircut of my life. I can't even get it fixed because it is so much shorter than I wanted. There are huge "texture" discrepancies all over my hair, the most obvious being in the back near my neck. There's also a strand of hair far longer than the entire length of my bob cut. I don't even understand how this happened. I'm so traumatized. I would never recommend this place and will never ever come back. I really had 1 chance to get a cut as a treat to myself, since I really don't have extra time to spare. And now I have to live with this until it grows out, definitely more than 6 more months. If I could give -1000 stars, I would. Please do yourself a favor and find a salon that can do a nice cut for long AND SHORT hair. WITHOUT A PERM TO MAKE IT ALL STRAIGHT FIRST. The skill level here is just so sub par. I haven't cut my hair in 6 months and I have really long straight natural hair so you can say it is a blank canvas. This is probably one of the worst haircut I have gotten in years compared to other places that are in different price ranges. Leaving the salon it looked good styled but when I went home to wash it and had more time to look without it curled I saw really choppy layers and the length is much shorter than i wanted. For a cut I paid $107-110 not including tips and expected a decent cut for that amount. Truly disappointing as holidays are coming up and I have been wearing a hat to cover up, cannot wait for this to grow out but will take months. Ara was really sweet and nice but I don't think the skills were there.
