Mizu salon is beyond my expectations of what a salon should be. The managers walk around making sure their guests are happy. The employees are courteous. The salon is sleek and clean. Karen Freely, colorist, not only met my expectations of hi-lights but went above and beyond what I wanted to be done with my hair. The color job she did was spectacular. She absolutely understands what a customer wants and knows how to give it to you, even providing you with an extra pizazz. Aya is the sweetest! I went to mizu on New Year's Eve and Aya gave my lifeless haven't-been-cut-in-a-year-hair ooh lala oomph and volume that I'd never thought I see on my overgrown flat hair. When she gave me a $50 off card and told me to come back for a much needed haircut I happily made my appointment and left mizu feeling fabulous. I rescheduled my appointment 2x and pushed it back 45 minutes that day of and the girls at mizu were super sweet and never gave me a hint of attitude. Definitely no pretentiousness here! Aya meticulously cut layers into my long mono length hair and kept the bottom layer long exactly as I had asked. The result was lively bouncy hair that was soft to the touch and soo sexy, my boyfriend said it was gorgeous. I'm new to the neighborhood and was looking for a new salon. I'm an avid follower of Lucky magazine editor-in-chief Eva Chen, who is also a Mizu client, so I thought I'd give them a try. I don't color but it does take someone pretty skilled to cut my thick, long, and wavy hair, so I was not about to consider a Lifebooker deal or anything like that. I called and had an appointment booked with Judy last Friday. It could not have gone better. I was only looking for a trim but gave her pretty specific details and she followed all of them to a T. The shampoo was also wonderful, using Oribe products, and Becca gave me a great scalp massage. I especially appreciated how Judy took the time to explain what she was doing and why during the entire cut. I wear my hair both naturally wavy and blown out straight and she was certain to make sure I had a cut that would look great both ways. I've had experiences in the past where stylists are reluctant to take the time to blow out my hair because it's so thick and I usually wear it wavy this time of year, but Judy did not hesitate. She is also very friendly and funny, and our conversation was great. Judy also recommended several products but was not at all pushy about forcing me to buy them - but she did give me some free samples! I love that Mizu carries several brands so it never felt like they are recommending a product that's not right for your hair. As of now they carry bumble and bumble, Kerastase, Oribe, Living Proof, and several others. Every person I came in contact with, from the receptionist and the coat check attendant to both Judy and Becca, was warm, professional, and welcoming. I highly recommend Mizu. Completely unprofessional. I arrived on time for an appointment scheduled 2 weeks earlier - disorganized front desk, gave them my information and who i was here to see, then waited for 15 minutes until Deyah came out. She said she had double booked this appointment and couldn't find the record of our conversation - despite the fact we communicated directly with each other via text to book this appointment. I showed her our text conversation so she could find it on her phone - and she had to admit she hadn't even saved my information. I understand mistakes happen, but it's how you deal with them that is indicative of your business. After it was clear Deyah had failed to properly book an appointment or keep records of her communication, she made no attempts to rectify the situation or even genuinely apologize. She did not acknowledge the inconvenience she had caused with her carelessness, and I did not get the impression she even cared or was taking it seriously. She told me she was going to cut the other girl's hair since it was more relevant to her cutting class - and then halfheartedly told me I could reschedule. I declined, as I have zero confidence in Deyah's or the salon's ability to accurately schedule logistics, or professionally rectify an issue once it appears. One of the most disappointing parts is that when we confirmed the appointment over text, I got the impression Deyah was getting impatient with me confirming the time/date details - and it turns out she wasn't even keeping track of them. Suzette... She is the 1st in 3 years in nyc that has been able to get me back my Giselle like color. I could nt say more great things about how she really made me look the way I wanted to look.... period. She listened. I thought I liked another girl, but I will never stray from Suzette now. Everyone at Mizu is so friendly and helpful. From the smiling receptionists who greeted me, to the colorist, stylist and both assistants, I always felt welcomed and even pampered. Miguel did an awesome job on my color. The cut, by Angela - honestly - was the only cut I've ever had in my life that I knew I'd like before it was even blow-dried. She stopped several times during the cut to ask my opinion about things she wanted to try and explain to me how short she would have to cut certain parts to get the look I wanted. I never felt bullied into a style and I love the finished product. If you're looking for a more edgy look, you know it's hard to find a stylist who really gets what you're after; Angela does. *One of the assistants even rushed across the room with a q-tip to wipe off some dye she noticed on my ear. I went to Mizu + Louis Licari two weeks ago for a hair modeling program and felt compelled to write a review after considering how amazing this experience was. Prefacing this review with the fact I was laid off due to covid and wanted to get my hair colored but could only afford a hair modeling deal where I didn't have to pay hundreds of dollars for highlights. From the moment I met Louis and Taylor they treated me kindly and made me feel welcome, which is not always the case with hair modeling. Taylor gave me the most beautiful highlights ever and Louis was so warm and sweet that its truly made the experience magical for someone struggling with money and self-image. Melissa colored my graying hair for me and she did fantastic. I was worried it would look fake but it was on point. She matched the colors perfect and made it still look like it had texture. My girlfriend was even impressed and she's a tough critic. I'm really glad I met her. I'll continue drinking from the fountain of youth at Mizu. Aside from Melissa the entire salon staff was very nice and accommodating. They were easy to book and friendly while I was being serviced. They made sure I was comfortable the whole time. I am new in Yelp, although I would like to comment about a hair colorist, Yolanda, she did something extraordinary. I have no idea about hair coloring and I don't care too much about it but my wife has been complaining, to me! about how difficult is to find a good hair colorist, even in famous and well known expensive hair salons in NYC and New England, all this according to her. Last week when she came home, she was so happy that I was wondering what happened to her. She told me, finally!!! I found a good hair colorist, her name is Yolanda, at MIZU Salon. I haven't let anyone touch my hair to give me a proper haircut in 4 years. Rosa came highly recommended and I decided to take the plunge and surrender my locks. She greeted me when I first walked in, took me to her chair for a consultation and we discussed what cut would be best not just for my type of hair but for the frame of my face, which I've never had a stylist talk me to about before. I showed her photos and she gave me her expert opinion and suggestion, which I felt very comfortable going with. I was led to the hair washing area, and the shampoo lady, Maria, was very charming and gave me the most delicious scalp and shoulder massage. As Rosa was cutting my hair she explained every step she was taking and took her time making sure everything was perfect. She gave me tips on how to do my hair at home and what tools to use, which I really appreciated. The end result was amazing, and I was SO happy! I learned In conversation that Rosa has been in the business since she was 17!, and has many clients who've been going to her for YEARS. That's the kind of commitment I was looking for, and it's pretty certain I'll become that kind of client myself. She has magic hands! As for the salon, it's gorgeous and fancy, yet I didn't sense any pretentiousness at all. read more

I was a hair model, so I came in around 10 am. I approached the front desk and the associate tells me to go upstairs. I felt kind of out of place. All in all, I liked my haircut. Simple, short, and light. I had an apprentice work on my hair. He took 2.5 hours, and his instructor helped intermittently. I walked out with what looks like a one-length bob. The one thing that I would suggest is to work on removing the weight on my head. Despite the stylish look, he would lean on my head as he cut my hair, which was uncomfortable at times for my neck(minus one star). However, I should mention that he was responsive and did try his best to help make me feel welcome. Overall, he was warm and receptive to my requests. read more

Ask for MAMORU and you won't be sorry. He's been cutting my hair on and off since 1999 (I moved away for a few years and he's one of the reasons I'm happy to be back in New York). A hair magician, Mamoru uses a razor (but will use scissors, if you ask), which is great for my thick (but very fine) naturally wavy hair. A haircut costs $150 (plus tax and tip...nuts, i know--but Mizu offers gift cards). His haircuts last and last (and last). My hair mysteriously morphs into new styles as the months pass. I can usually go about five-six months between visits (I color my hair and so the ends get a bit frayed after awhile, so you could go longer if you don't color). Be clear and tell him what you want, but be open to his suggestions. He may not verbally articulate his intentions but relax, this guy just KNOWS. He's been doing hair in NYC for a long time (previously at Bumble), and I think he's quite a big shot at Mizu. He's like a Japanese Edward Scissorhands (don't panic when you see the chunks of flying hair, it all works out in the end). Worth the cash for sure. Good with long, naturally wavy hair. Also don't panic if you don't like it right away, sometimes it takes a week (or two) for your hair to get acclimated. read more

Melissa is extremely talented, attentive to detail, and she has an overall friendly, sunny, positive demeanor. I'd seen other colorists in the past, but no one compares to Melissa and the work that she does. I'd give her, and all of Mizu, more than five stars if I could. Suzette is amazing! I have been wanting to write this review for sometime now, but time always slipped away. Again, I say it...Suzette is amazing. She has a great eye for color and most importantly, she is a great listener. When I came to her last September in dire straights with my over-processed, bleached out, uneven and unhealthy blonde hair, I was overwhelmed. She listened to me, was brutally honest, and assured me we could get my hair back in tip-top shape and to its natural color with the right mixture of glosses, maintenace trims, and PATIENCE. She was (as I was) most concerned with what would be best for my hair in the long-term and promised to be patient with me to get it where I want it (which is long, healthy, and natural). This is no easy feat, but Suzette has made the transition flawless. Do not go there for protein keratin treatment. Not only do they over charge by 200$ they also don't finish the steps. I went there and the phone girl told me it starts at 350$ I'm a blonde girl who just has frizzy so NOT difficult hair so I assumed I'd be In range of that 350 well they charged me 537$ and they lady didn't even do the last step where she washes my hair and blow it out. Melissa is an incredible colorist. I've received hair painting & highlight treatments from her three times now in the past year, and each time has been more marvelous! She knows how to select the right colors and tones to complement your look. Her process is SO gentle, too -- even with bleaching, Melissa uses top of the line products (Goldwell) and her technique is super safe, so I have very little damage in my hair even in the blondest parts (I'm naturally a darkkk brown). Came here as a hair model for a "long, layered cut". Ended up with 6 inches off my hair which was NEVER communicated to me. I was told my hair would be taken from a "round" shape, to a "square" shape, that was all. As someone who does not cut hair for a living, I have no idea what that means in terms of length. When I spoke to the teacher of the class afterwards (older man, grayish, baldish, round glasses) he was EXTREMELY rude to me about the difference between results and expectations. He said "we have to take off enough hair for the student to learn something, it's not like you got a bad haircut"..... I will be the judge of that sir. I have been going to Karen at Mizu 505 for about two and a half years now, and I could not recommend her more! When I first started going to her, my hair was double-processed platinum blonde. She quickly took it down to a more natural and manageable look for me. Now, I only have to have to go in every three or four months, and when I tell people I get my hair colored, they usually respond with 'I thought your hair was natural.' I started seeing Karen for hair color last year in response to an ad posted on craigslist for discounted color for hair models. I came in with over processed blond hair that clashed with my naturally dark roots. All I'd hoped for was a "touch up" to comoflauge the contrast for a little longer, but Karen's AMAZING super skinny highlights really stepped up my whole look. She suggested adding some baby fine, natural looking highlights and a few lowlights to break up the brassy color and allow me to start using my natural hair color as a base. She gave me perfect, buttery blond lights around my hairline and just enough to blend the roots with the rest of my hair. Also, the color they use is such high quality, my hair actually seemed healthier/shinier/smoother after. The highlights grew out very naturally. They looked more like ombre color after 3 months than unintentional outgrowth. I've been going to Karen for the last year and I swear my hair color evolves every time she touches it! I went here last feb and i liked that the staff was very nice and gentle and gave me a cut that got many compliments (Dimitrio) so i came again... this time, i was not amused. I came by to get a cut with Aya. I told her i never liked my hair short and i wanted to keep the length, so just like a trim about 2 inches. Ended up being like 4-5 inches!! She kept tousling my hair on top to create volume (which felt like jabbing my head every so often) but thats not my everyday- i said my daily routine is just wash and blowdrying straight! I feel like she didnt seem to energetic or happy, even her assistant was a bit off, as she washed my hair after the dry cut, she was pretty rough too like she wanted to quickly get it over with. Two stars because i dont want to give up on this place. Next time i will ask for Dimitrios again. But i have to wait for my hair to grow out again T_T. I'm a frequent visitor of Salonapprentice, I came across an ad for pixie cuts at mizu (the haircut would be done by an apprentice just finishing their training program). I texted the number on the ad and spoke with an woman named Misty. I let her know that i'd recently bleached my hair (went completely blonde) and I needed my ends trimmed before the breakage became too much. She let me know that that would be fine, that the service was free, and that i'd be styled after the cut/blow dry. I arrived for my appointment a little late (Thanks to jury duty) but was welcomed with open arms by the woman at the front desk as well as Misty herself. I was given a shampoo & a treatment mask for my crazy breakage then i was taken back to Misty's station. Girl worked her magic on me! My hair actually has a shape now and theres no more breakage. After she finished styling me she let me know not to use any heat styling tools for a couple of weeks and to deep condition at least once a week. After that we made a plan for me to come see her again in a couple of weeks, i'll definitely be going back!! It didn't hurt that Misty had 5+ years of salon experience, but I will say that the Mizu apprentice program is one of the best i've run into. read more

I had my first Mizu experience today. I was invited to be a hair model and coincidentally I had been intending on a haircut, so I thought why not. Unfortunately when I arrived, I discovered that I'd been double booked for my appointment. I'm still giving Mizu 5 stars because every single staff member was so courteous and sweet, and they paired me up with a Stylist named Scarlett without any problem. She is amazing! I have not had a proper salon haircut since I was 10 years old (no joke) because of a horrible haircut that had left me in tears. She didn't criticize me for chopping my own hair with absolutely no skill for the last decade either. I showed her a picture of what I had wanted and she affirmed that she would be able to do something similar with my own flat, thin hair. She was guided by a senior Stylist who was also so sweet and encouraging and knowledgeable. An hour and a half later, my hair looked even better than I'd ever anticipated. It wasn't a huge change in style, but it looked very clean and professionally done. It was exactly what I wanted. It was like she brought the life back into my hair, shiny and voluminous. I don't have a single complaint - I've been receiving compliments ALL day on it. And now I'm no longer scared of visiting the salon either. Would definitely love to come back! Austin. Austin. Austin. I began going to Austin as his hair model when he was an assistant, he has now graduated from the program and on the floor running. His work has always been consistant and he always listens to exactly what I say. I am a blonde, who hates golden/red/brass tones, the only person that has ever given me the perfect neutral blonde color, is Austin. On one occasion, I trusted a friend of a friend with my hair and I was left with all sorts of green and red tones - it was horrendous. Although I may dabble in other salons for cuts, I only come to KAREN at Mizu for my color. She is hands down the best. Karen has a technique that she calls "baby girl hair" where your highlights look so absolutely natural, its like you were born with them. Also because of how strategically she places the color, I have very minimal root maintenance (I get my color done 2x per year). I have very fine light brown, stick straight hair and I leave looking like I have Jen Aniston's hair - sunkissed blond and full of extra volume and texture. Her highlights go beyond color and really make my hair feel fuller. The other pro about Karent is that she really listens about what is going on with your hair, how much maintenance you want, and will discus a long term color plan with you. Her goal is have you looking good years from now, not just immediately after you leave. Everyone else at the salon is always really pleasant. They have a beautiful seating area while you are waiting, are always on time and offer refreshments. read more

My fabulous stylist Nicole, recently joined Mizu. I love her, she took me from a chin length disaster- when I first went to her in serious need of help- to awesome hair halfway down my back. Every single hair cut she's given me has been amazing, easy to style and packed with compliments. Once even from the Starbucks barista. I wasn't that happy to hear she had left her old cool downtown salon and gone to Mizu in Park Av. I expected to be greeted by a stuffy staff as the client for the new girl. I could not have been more wrong. Since the moment I called to make an appointment with her they were super nice and accommodating. When I got there I found they were all even nicer in person. Despite Being in Park Ave there is no pretentiousness from anyone at Mizu. Also they have an amazing selection of product, Bumble, Oribe, Kerastase and so many more. I love having that selection. I am very particular with my hair, have tons and tons of it and have had my good share of bad cuts at really good salons but Nicole has not given me a haircut I don't LOVE in the time I've been going to her. And once in, if you appreciate having someone who will listen to what it is you're requesting and follow through with it, ask for Sheridan. She'll not only hear you out, but she seems to possess the sort of gift and talent reserved for celebrity stylists. Whoops... that's right--she's been one. I'll leave the name-dropping up to her discretion, but--if nothing else--that should give you a sense of the trust and security that those who make a living "being seen" invest in and have with her. I've known Sheridan for quite some time and have had the pleasure of having her personally construct my hair. (I used that verb by design as my texture is thick and wavy.) In the past my arrival at any OTHER salon has been met with either fear or disdain from those respective stylists; conversely, from the first time I ever sat in a chair in front of her on through the most recent visit, Sheridan has made me feel completely comfortable. If that weren't enough, her sense of humor will make you forget that you've been sitting in one place while she's been doing her handiwork. (You might even be sad it's over when she's done.) I've specified Sheridan as the one "Pro" because she is the one with which I have first-hand experience. However, if the good people at Mizu are bright enough to spot talent like her, I have no doubt that the rest of the staff is just as extraordinary. I don't normally do reviews other than food and hotels here. Why? I just don't have the time. But after a visit w/ Suzette yesterday (courtesy of Gilt City), I felt compelled to. Why again? Because my hair came out so fantabulously beautiful!!! I went in w/ a good amount of my own hair color growth, as well as several different other colors at the ends. I had just recently chopped off my hair after a failed attempt to grow it out to donate (colored hair just doesn't stay as healthy w/ the constant coloring and lack of maintenance cuts that i didn't do. I've never much liked my own hair color though, and after missing my long and pretty hair, i felt like i needed a severe change. I wanted to go blonde! Well sort of. So after speaking to Suzette about what I wanted, finding out that I really needed highlights, and being realistic w/ what a single-process coloring can do to my black hair (that's what I bought w/ Gilt City), we went forward to achieve a dark caramel color that was possible. So I sat... and waited... I was brushed, plastic-wrapped, washed, masked, and timed and 2.5 hours later WALAH!! My hair was a beautiful blondishy caramel color - so much more along the lines of what I wanted!! How perfect! As I sat in my chair watching my hair get blown out, I was the giddiest girl in the whole salon!! She did her magic and I walked out feeling like I was completely knocked out of my socks! So kudos to Suzette because you completely rocked!!!! On a side note, other reasons I loved my first visit to Mizu: 1) I was greeted and treated so amazingly, from the receptionists to the coat lady, to Suzette's assistant who was so wonderful and friendly 2) despite their Park Ave location, there was no pretentiousness. I've been to many a salon (more so in SoHo) and have been given many the obnoxious shoulder. Why is that needed? I don't know. But Mizu did not have this at all. 3) Their location is so easy to get to! Jump off the 4, walk one block and yay! I'm there! Perfect for those cold NYC days that I absolutely hate. read more
