I used to love Sei and the way he cut my hair, but after my last haircut I will no longer be coming back. He cut my bangs so horrifying that I literally cannot wear them down bc they look so bad. I walked out there with one of the best haircuts I have ever had (after one of the best head massages I have ever had!) and it was such a beautiful and tranquil experience. His space below MEY is stunning and feels incredibly peaceful. He really took the time to find out what I wanted and how I wanted my hair to look. I was very excited to try this hair salon as it seemed like such a hidden gem - at the time when I visited, there were only three reviews, all of which rated Noppera at 5 stars. The place is a one man show run by a man named Sei, and it is located in the basement of MEY, another hair salon. The two hair salons used to be one company, but they split in early 2020. Before MEY, Sei also worked at other places in NYC including Sassoon. Sei was courteous, pleasant to talk to, and knowledgeable. He had to spend the first five minutes while I was there to fix another client's bangs, and he was so apologetic about it, even though I did not mind at all. When he asked me what hairstyle I had in mind, I showed him the Pinterest inspiration board I had compiled ahead of time. He explained to me that the shorter above-the-shoulder cuts with my East Asian hair would be awkward and produce an outward flip to my right hand side at the ends, and if I did not want that look and was unwilling to style it every morning, then I should go for a slightly longer cut. I went with his advice and he gave me a beautiful cut that I walked out very happy with and am still happy with the day after! He spent over an hour on my hair. It is obvious that he is skilled and dedicated at his craft. He also graciously allowed me to use his fridge to store the birthday cake that I had picked up nearby before coming to the appointment. Sei specializes in cutting. He does not currently do any perming, coloring, or other services. As he explained to me, "My passion is creating shapes out of nothing." He used to work on photoshoots styling models' hair too, but he no longer does because he didn't get the satisfaction of cutting. His services and prices are listed on the Noppera website and he is by appointment only. P.S. The vintage-themed decor is beautiful! Love how he transformed this basement. P.P.S. I was tired of the long hair and wanted something low maintenance. The stylist took his time in listening to what I wanted. After two decades of haircuts in this city, there have only been 3 stylists whom I would return to as a "regular." I'm ecstatic to add Sei to that shortlist. The fact that he only provides haircuts--none of this, "oh sorry, I just have to check on how this other client's color is developing"--translates into undivided attention on you during your appointment. Sei was super precise with my cut, as I would expect of any Japanese salon, but he was also very thoughtful in the initial consult (asking me what tools I planned to style with and adjusted the length when I admitted that I'm ADHD when it comes to blow drying and usually only complete 70% of my head before running out the door). Scheduling--and rescheduling--the appointment was a breeze through their website. COVID protocols were communicated ahead of time and Sei met me outside to take my temperature prior to entering to salon. He even took the time to give an amazing scalp massage, which I wasn't expecting from the owner/head stylist. 12/10 would recommend. read more

The salon was so cute and immaculate, and I was the only customer there (points for social distancing). I showed Sei several pics of the style I was looking for and he took the time to explain which would suit me best and what steps he was going to take for the lowest maintenance hairstyle - which is exactly what I was looking for!
