My husband and I stopped in for drinks and dessert on a Friday night. The restaurant entrance is actually accessed through the bakery, which is a little confusing when the bakery is full of customers. The staff was attentive and everything was brought out super fast. We didn't try the savory options on the menu, but I don't think you could go wrong with any of the sweets. My mom went to school in France and she loves all things French so I thought this would be the perfect place to take her and my family for Mother's day. I decided this close to 3 weeks ago and promptly made a reservation for Mother's day Brunch and all they had available for my party of 6 was 3:00pm. I was concerned as we were the last seating of the day and I wanted the perfect experience. Sadly, I couldn't get a better time no matter how many times I checked. You have to go through the bakery to get to the bistro. The bakery was shutting down as we got there but we were able to snag some macaroons and some coffee. Boy did those desserts look amazing... When we arrived I was happy to see other parties being sat too. (for weeks I had visions of us sitting there all alone with the staff impatiently waiting for us to finish and feeling rushed which thankfully wasn't the case) I also had been worried for weeks about them being out of everything, which sadly was some of the case and the reason for my 4 instead of 5 stars. We ordered a lot of food. As far as drinks go - I stuck to wine which was what I craved and that was in stock and delicious. My husband opted for a French cocktail which they ended up being out of the St Germaine for so he got an old fashioned, which he enjoyed. We order 2 french onion soups, fois gras, escargots, 2 Croque Monsieur, a Mac and Cheese, a Crispy Chicken sandwich, and a Tartiflette. The one thing I was SO excited for an also ordered was the Mussels, Moules Frites. And BOOOO they ran out!! My fears of the last seating were coming true. I got another menu but they didn't have anything like that and we had plenty of other things that would fill me up just fine but WAHH I was upset. Then I heard the table next to me order a lobster appetizer so I asked about that and they said it was a special but they called and had them hold it for them so there wasn't any left. Didn't know how this worked but apparently the regulars know to call in and have the chef hold a dish for them so they have it for their reservation? Wish I would have known that for my mussels. I was so sad. I tried to keep my composure but I kind of built myself up for this and I think I definitely couldn't hide my disappointment. The server then came out and said there was a lobster appetizer that was held for someone that they cancelled? That cheered me right up. I took it! lol The server then asked if we wanted to claim some desserts before they closed up the bakery and of course, the two I wanted were gone. Its fine though, I didn't have my heart set on dessert like I did the mussels. Now on to the food. French onion soup was VERY good. Not salty at all and the broth was smooth and the onions cooked perfectly. Good amount of cheese too! The Fois gras was amazing. It came with toasted brioche (I think) and a jam as well. It was creamy and rich and not overpowering in flavor. I took one bite of a croque monsieur. It reminded me of a rich grilled cheese. Very good. Escargots were delicious and full of butter and garlic. YUM The mac and cheese was for my daughter but of course I had to try it. It was creamy and rich, topped with breadcrumbs. Very good. The Crispy chicken sandwich was for my son and I didn't try it but he wasn't a fan. Probably a seasoning that turned him off. It looked fine to me. I'll have it for lunch today haha I really enjoyed the Tariflette. The server described it as a warm charcuterie. The meats were cool and salty and the cheese was all melty and it had little potatoes and onions and these yummy little pickles. I could eat that all day. So good. The surprise lobster dish was really yummy and even though it was considered an appetizer it was really substantial. They said it was 4oz of lobster tail which sounds small but it felt like 2 small tails cut in half. So it didn't feel small at all meat wise. It was poached and wasn't all the way cooked which I HOPE was the way it was supposed to be but it tasted good and I am not sick now so that's good lol. It was served on a lobster bisque with some other sauces blended in and some veggies and potatoes. It was very complex that I can't even describe it but it was comforting (which was fitting for my lack of mussel sadness) and delicious! All in all it was a good experience. I just think when I return I won't be the last seating and if they have any specials I will be sure to call ahead and have them hold a dish for me so I don't look forward to something that I can't have. read more

My sisters and I had a lovely French breakfast from the bakery. We each had a different pastry: pan au chocolat, an almond croissant, and a raisin swirl. Simple, elegant, well-made, good quality, an delicious! My hibiscus tea was also lovely. Our pastries were so good that we returned before leaving the city to grab some patisserie, including a dark chocolate cake and time tart that were indulgent and beautiful. Nice move. Salmon eggs benedict was very good although potatoes just slightly warm, not hot. Moules Frites was a generous order. Good flavor. Mussels were on the very small side, for PEI. The frites were excellent. Shared the floating island for dessert. It was a blast from the past. The Creme Anglaise was super. Beautiful presentation. This was our second trip to Bistro Barberet, which tells you how good it was the first time because we rarely go to the same restaurant twice. We opened with the foie gras, which is a favorite of my wife's and hits the spot here. It could have used a couple of extra pieces of toast for spreading. Our soups were very good. I had the soup du jour, which was a tomato puquillo pepper bisque. My wife went with the French onion. Both were solid choices. For entrees, my wife had the cassoulet with duck confit. She was impressed with the flavor of the cassoulet, but not so much with the duck which seemed to be fried. I had the veal schnitzel. It was good, though not mind blowingly special. We finished with the famous "floating island" dessert, which might very well have been the best part of the meal. That makes sense considering that the owner is a famous pastry chef. I dipped it in the escargot. I was a bit disappointed that there were only 3 small pieces but since we did not get a bread basket, I had to make do. The poached meringue with creme anglaise and dried raspberries was delightfully different and unique. Brought 2 boxes of pastries home from attached bakery to share with my family. The Dining room area is adorned with black and white prints of France, many of them very familiar, having traveled there a couple times. Dark wood bar area with great drinks. This place has become a must-go-to for me and my wife. We found it through Yelp while in Lancaster for Sight and Sound theater. The first time we were at BB&B we sat at the bar because there were no available tables. The bartender was great- very attentive, fun and personable. The second time here we had lunch with another couple to celebrate a birthday. BB&B is a higher end restaurant. But you get the quality food and service you would expect from a premium place. You have to walk through their bakery to enter the restaurant. Very smart on their part. The desserts look decadent and the bread smells devine. We have found no disappointments dining here. We were so very pleased with the cake for our daughter's wedding. Since we were having other desserts and only wanted a cake for the cutting ceremony, they suggested a fake bottom layer with only the top being an actual cake. What an excellent idea! I'm so glad to find this little pretty bakery in downtown Lancaster. The store is so beautiful from the outside, all the cakes look really good with appealing representation. I ordered each of the chocolate available in the store to try it out, Les éclairs and Flan tart as well. It was very hard to pick because I like all of them. Hands up! Hands down! One of my favorite French Bakery of all time around! I've encountered plenty and there's nothing quite like it than here. Just beautifully arranged presentations of pastries where you have to stand back and admire the displays. If you ask me, it's challenging to decide which one of these desserts to select and come home with me. The good thing is the staff are pleasant and patient which makes every visit a good experience. My boyfriend has to get his own box of treats because I refuse to share. I won't even let him hold the well packaged boxes that are placed in a carry-out bag when we leave. Yes, it's that serious. Most of the items we've purchased are very yummy to our tummies. I'm more of the cake selection and macaron gal. Which they produce with the right hint of sweetness, soft & delicate. While his interests are more towards the cheesecake, tarts, or anything caramel. We do travel from out of town, so whenever we're in Lancaster, coming here is a must to-do task. Spend as much as we like with no regrets. We have yet to explore the dine in restaurant as they do offer Lunch, Brunch, and Dinners. Which is something I am interested in trying the next time. Blown away by this Almond Croissant. This was better than anything I experienced in Montreal and close to Paris. The croissant was buttery and soft. It has plenty of that dry and crunchy almondy flavor with a sweet glazy finish. The crumb (interior) was soft on top and spongy and syrupy on the bottom. I've never had an Almond Croissant like this. The burger was very good and cooked perfectly medium (but with an imitation "Big Mac sauce", as my friend pointed out in disbelief) The mussels were doused in too much wine and were very small. The French onion soup was over salted and bland. The escargot were exquisite in a tasty butter/garlic sauce. The pastries were very good, according to my friend. The service was nice but not as attentive as we would have liked- water glasses were often left empty. I think this becomes a value proposition. If you're spending upwards of 60 or 70 bucks per person (that includes the drinks), I would say there are better choices like the horse inn or john j Jeffries. I have been to the bakery before. And this trip was no exception. Their coffee and croissants and quiche are all fabulous. The young woman working in the morning was very friendly. If you are in a hurry, I will not say they are very fast. But it is worth it for a breakfast. This trip I was able to also try their bistro for dinner. I cannot tell you how disappointing it was, especially considering how good the front of the shop is. I had the French onion soup, which you think would have been decent for a French restaurant, but it was subpar. I also had the charcuterie meat and cheese and I really didn't enjoy anything on the dish. My friend did have the oysters (which is a Thursday night special)and she said they were very enjoyable. Although I cannot say the waiter did a very good job at selling them because he described them as bottom dwellers that were fresh because they constantly got flushed.
