The falafels were over cooked, dipping sauces were bland and what little taste they had was off putting. Aside from the falafels, there were a few pickle slices, cucumber and tomato slices, one small piece of ice cold cauliflower, and some soaking wet sliced olives. Regardless of the quality of the food, this restaurant is overpriced. $50 for two entrees that looked like appetizers is absurd. I am surprised to see this restaurant has the positive reviews it has and equally unsurprised to see the restaurant completey empty on a Saturday afternoon/evening. This restaurant will bring you such an incredible and memorable night. I've been there twice and one for my birthday with not too many people in there and the owner made it such a nice night that I'm grateful for. The woman that owns Utopia puts in so much work to make it such a lovely experience. She is usually there and is so approachable plus unbelievably kind. There's not too many people that are this creative and willing to explore so many amazing ingredients and she definitely excels in this. I'm also a vegetarian and there are so many options for non meat eaters and vice versa alike! I highly recommend and will be going back for sure. read more

You all have to check this place out-- worth a short detour on your way down east. It's Mediterranean/Middle Eastern. My whole family loves it-- my cheese-atarian daughter and lactose-intolerant, vegan-adjacent husband (a hard-to-please crowd). I could eat the salad in the photo every day for the rest of my life. I'm so glad we finally got to try this place!! Our food was amazing. Finally a restaurant with delicious food that you can feel great about eating. Their menu is on the smaller side but the add-ons make it customizable for anyone. We enjoyed the Garlic Fried Calamari, ROASTED BRUSSEL SPROUTS, CHICKEN AND OYSTER MUSHROOM SHAWAMA, SPANAKOPITA with a Berbere Shrimp Skewer, and Mixed Mushroom Pappardelle Pasta. After the delectable meal we had during our first visit to Utopia, this second visit for dinner with my wife was a delight (due not only to the quality of the food, but also to the added company of our youngest daughter). To start off, we ordered the faro salad appetizer and bowls of soup. I had the vegetable stew--a tasty montage of tomato and zucchini chunks amidst other flatteringly flavored vegetables in a broth whose unique foreign flavors were a welcome reprieve from the often acidic tomato based soups served in other restaurants. And the bright green coolness of fresh mint leaves in the faro salad brought out a boldness in the olive oil and poppy seed dressing. The main course that followed these savory openers was one of the most original I've had--a cauliflower steak slathered in a sweet and spicy sauce made from dates and hot peppers, with a side of rice providing a suitably subtle diminuendo to the steak's zesty crescendo. As with my first experience at Utopia, some of the dishes were a tad too sweet (the roasted Brussels sprouts in their bath of simple syrup could almost be served as a dessert; the dates in the cauliflower steak slightly overpowered the peppers; and even though I ordered the faro salad without the raisins this time, I still had to pick out the dried cherries). This and the unreasonably slow service were the only things preventing a 5-star review. read more

We're visiting the great state of Maine and we ate our way from Bar Harbor through Portland and had our socks knocked off in Bangor at Utopia! What an incredible meal starting with Roasted Brussel Sprouts, paired with grapefruit - outstanding combo. The Mezze Plate was totally wonderful, especially the Muhammara! Didn't stop until we finished off the Spanakopita. By then we ran out of room for dessert, but it didn't matter, as we were sated. Hat's off to Rachel and her crew for a most incredible meal. If you get within a day's drive of Bangor, get to Utopia, you'll be very glad you did! read more

We had lunch there today. I had the shrimp gyro - spicy grilled shrimp on naan bread, open faced, with goat cheese, black olives, tzatziki, lettuce and tomatoes. It came with fries and homemade pickles. All were very yummy. My friend had the chicken version. For dessert we had a chocolate ganache pie which we shared. The wait staff were friendly and efficient. The menu is mostly Greek recipes, but other option, including vegan were available. This restaurant is a nice addition to downtown Bangor. We set out to enjoy a nice dinner on a Friday evening, hoping that we could find something special in Bangor. Utopia had a number of patrons dining that night, but there were still plenty of tables to accommodate us. We shared two appetizers: the perfectly fried polenta sticks (sorry that I can't recall the actual descriptive name of the offerings) and the halloumi cheese options and then shared the delightfully rich, creamy and earthy mushroom pappardelle pasta dish, which was not only delicious, but a generous serving. We were too satisfied to opt for dessert. The decor was pleasing. However, I would really love to see them work on the lighting and the service. The lights were far too bright for a completely pleasing dinner experience. There are small spotlights on the wall, over the front window and they and the other bright lights of the dining room lean toward making one feel as if they are eating at an inquisition;). PLEASE Utopia, work on warming the glow and dimming the lights a bit. Sit at each table and get a feel for what looks and feels like nice lighting in every spot. The server was kind, and perhaps she's new, but her timing was way off the mark to offer a truly terrific dining experience. She left us alone for far too long after we received our appetizers. She started to approach the table several times, attempting what seemed like a cursory check on us. We had long ago finished our appetizers, but she never cleared the plates (until dinner was finally served and we had to jostle long-cold dirty appetizer plates with the arrival of our main meal) and she didn't seem interested in taking our dinner order for what was a very awkward and inappropriate amount of time (we had already finished our apps). Luckily, we had time that evening for a very leisurely meal. She was kind and friendly, but Utopia really needs to work on her service timing with her. Here's hoping that she's up to honing this very important part of good service. There was a distinct mismatch between the terrific quality of the food and the less pleasing ambience offered by bright lights and poor service timing. We will definitely be back, as the food was memorable, more than satisfying and quite delicious. We're just really hoping that they are open to tweaking the aforementioned elements that detract from a wonderful night of dining out in Bangor. read more
