The biggest garlic and corriander naan
Carolyn M.

Let me preface this by saying that neither myself nor my boyfriend are vegetarians. Let me also say that if there's one thing my boyfriend and I will never agree on, that's Indian food. He would dive face first in to an Indian meal in half a heartbeat, whereas, I'd rather starve than eat it. Ok, I'm not THAT dramatic, but it's a pretty fair description. The one thing I have noticed when it comes to my love hate relationship with Indian food is that I find that I like it a lot more when we actually go to a sit down restaurant versus ordering a takeaway. I find that more love and attention is given to the actual dishes, rather than a load of sludge and chicken piled in to takeaway containers and delivered to our door. Blah! The other day, my boyfriend and I were out and about in the went end and were pretty hungry having had breakfast quite early that morning. We were wanting to go to a restaurant across the street, but I realised it's not open on a Sunday. So there we were, literally leaning up against the railing at the cross walk trying to decide where to go. I jokingly suggested Usha's as it was right across from where we were standing but half knowing my boyfriend isn't one for going for vegetarian dishes ever really. The only time he has any, is when I order them (which is more often than not, as I really do love vegetarian foods) . Anyway, to my surprise, he said sure, let's give it a go. He knows I've been talking about it for a while, so why not now?! Boy, am I sure glad we decided to eat here. It ranks up there with the best of the best Indians I've ever eaten and I'm going to say this now: if you haven't been in here, please do yourself a favour and go. Now! We were sat in a cute little booth for two by who seemed to have been the manager. Really friendly guy, very personable. He mentioned to us that the menu might say it's tapas style, but they're actually a bit bigger than a tapas style. He also mentioned that although they are currently vegetarian and vegan only, they're changing up the menu very soon to incorporate meat dishes. I guarantee, my boyfriend ears perked up at the sound of that! The staff that we encountered (actually just the manager and who I named the mad scientist brought out the food) were lovely. Fast, friendly and eager to serve. We started with two lovely starters of cauliflower pakora and the samosa chaat. They were both goreously laid out on a plate, very much into presentation. The pakora came with a side salad of fresh greens as well as a dipping sauce that almost tasted a bit mexican. We loved it! The samosas came in a bowl, two of them, covered with a lovely chick pea sauce and salad on top. Basically in heaven and we were only eating the starters. For our main meals, I ordered the Okra dopiaza and he ordered the Chana masala. Both amazing little dishes (by no means little) with loads of flavour. The Okra dopiaza was the favourite out of the two, which is almost unheard of because I chose it. I usually choose the least favourite item. Ha! Anyway, with these two dishes, we were able to each have a large serving and my boyfriend was able to have a full second helping. We also ordered boiled basmati rice and a garlic corriander naan. Um, that thing was massive, freshly made and delicious. Basically, I'm hoping this review speaks for itself but let me reiterate the fact that this place, even though we're not vegetarians, has quickly become a favourite. Please, all my veggie friends and veggie readers, don't boycott this place once they add meat dishes to their menu, and all my non-veggie friends and non-veggie readers, please go check this place out before they add meat to their menu. It's so delicious, you won't even realise meat isn't in the dish.

I'm going to keep this short and sweet. The food is AMAZING. We ordered all the gluten free and vegan options on the menu - yes really. The flavours were incredible, and the service is quick and friendly. I have one issue though, we found a bit of plastic in one of the dips. I was the lucky one to find it (while I tried to chew it and realised it was not for human consumption), I pulled it out of my mouth and it was plastic! We told one of the staff and he just shrugged, cleared the plates and that was it. It was slightly alarming how they didn't seem to care there was plastic in the food, like A HARD BIT OF PLASTIC. With that said, it was probably just a one off and I'll definitely be back because the food was too good not to.

Long Island Iced Tea.

As a vegetarian I was a little disappointed to find Usha's is no longer exclusively meat-free - they dropped this a few months ago and now also offer a meat menu. While I was looking forward to going out for curry and being able to order absolutely anything from the menu, I wasn't too disappointed because the vegetarian and vegan options were plentiful (just as many as the meat options!) and were clearly marked on a separate side of the menu. We visited on a Sunday evening and were quickly seated in a quiet booth. I ordered a Long Island Iced Tea which was strong and delicious - and I like to think the black and orange straws were a little nod to Halloween! With another vegetarian and a vegan in the party, the only meat eater admitted defeat and we ordered a selection of breads, pakoras, rice and mains to choose from. The food was absolutely delicious without exception and even writing this review is making me want to go back for more! I will warn you though, they're not messing around with the chilli pakora - this looked literally like whole chillies wrapped in batter and were so hot that they required two jugs of water to wash them down with! I particularly love the street food element to Usha's - I've never tried small plates of Indian food before, but it works really well. It was great to have so many sides and mains to choose from, as it stopped me from ever feeling overwhelmed by one flavour and meant I didn't have to worry that someone else had made a better choice of curry than me! I will definitely be back - there are still so many other dishes to try!

Chicken tikka, gluten free roti (the big one), fenugreek paratha, rice, in the black pot is paneer makhani

Looks like I'm one of the first Yelpers to try out the new meat offerings (okay, offering, as I was with a vegetarian so wanted to share a starter!) We started with paneer pakora, which is basically the Indian version of mozzarella sticks with marinara sauce. The simple cheese, the lightly spiced, crispy batter and the almost salsa-like dipping sauce were a heavenly combination. This coming from someone who doesn't usually enjoy Indian food. For mains, this is where it got confusing. Some of their dishes (like curries) are tapas-sized, while others (sizzlers) are full on meals. I got the new chicken tikka, which was a huge meal for a decent price. It included a plate of tasty chicken chunks over sauteed onions and peppers, a side bowl of rice and a little yoghurt sauce on the side. I also ordered the one gluten-free bread option, some kind of roti. The bread was not my favourite, but the chicken was really nice. My partner ordered paneer makhani; more cheese, this time in a red, creamy sauce. I tried a little bit and it was really delicious. It came in a kind of small serving (tapas-like) but he ended up eating it with my bowl of rice so it worked out. He also ordered fenugreek paratha - after asking the waitress if they used whole grain flour (don't think she understood the question) he ordered it and sure enough, weird brown flour was used. He said it was terrible after one bite and didn't end up touching it; I was surprised to see that when clearing the table, the waiter didn't ask about it at all! I shouldn't have been surprised, though, because the service throughout the experience was just off. The waitress who took our order seemed totally unfamiliar with the menu; when our food arrived, brought by different men, one of them used a plate to shove my fork and napkin across the table (hey buddy, I'm left-handed, I wanted that there!) It took forever to get someone to notice we were done and our check took even longer, delivered once with errors and had to be corrected. I think if I were to eat Usha's food again, I'd just order it through Deliveroo (available as of July 2015) - all the deliciousness without any of the service issues that several reviewers have mentioned.

Long Island ice tea (cunningly disguised as coca cola)

I was a bit worried about Usha's after having read mixed reviews. Even friends who were fans said they did better when their menu was 100% vegetarian. However, I had to admit I was curious, so when friends arranged dinner there I agreed to go along. I'm pleased to say that I wasn't disapointed. I arrived first and was welcomed to take a seat and have a look at the menu while I waited for my friends. That gave me time to notice that the restaurant is good looking. Seriously, it's a nice place to sit and relax, or it would be if it weren't so busy. Soon friends arrived and we got settled. I ordered a very potent Long Island Ice Tea and, on the basis that it used to be better when Usha's only did veggie food I went for veggie options: Vegetable pakora to start and Paneer Jaipuri for main. Both of which were delicious and I'd definitely order them again. A lot of the dishes are tapas style, but they're actually quite big. I think with a starter and rice or naan you don't really need more than one. That said, if you had a big group and everyone fancied trying a bit of everything it would be a great way of working your way through the menu.

My partner and I are spending 3 months backpacking through Western Europe. We are both vegetarians and I am also gluten free. It is hard for us to find food back in the States but while being in Europe it has seemed a lot easier. We stumbled across this restaurant while roaming the streets of Glasgow and we sure are glad we did! Indian food is my partner's favorite type of food and I am rather fond of it myself. We were not sure what to expect from an Indian restaurant in Scotland but it definitely outreached any of our ideas! The food was probably the best Indian food either of us have ever had. We both ordered gluten free vegetarian lunch items. It came with an appetizer as well. Everything was absolutely delicious! Large portions, delightful use of spices, and impeccable presentation. The owner, our server, was incredibly informative and kind. He told us the history of the business as well as a but about himself. We talked about travel, food, nutrition, and more. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and feels very welcoming. I absolutely loved it. Our only complaint is that we found it on our last night in Glasgow. We wish we had another day to enjoy it!

It's clear that the focus of the restaurant is that it should still be a fun pub atmosphere that just happens to serve Indian food. So, looking in from the outside, you wouldn't know that it was an Indian restaurant. But when you walk in and smell it, you'll know. Portions were a little small so expect that you'd need to get a few things to get a full meal out of it. But they are appropriately priced for the portion size. They serve food here tapas-style and I believe you are still meant to share them so the idea is that you get a lot of dishes and eat as you drink copious amounts of beer. The one thing that made this place stand out was their service. It was amazing! During my meal, their card machines broke down and, as a result, I didn't have a way to pay for my food. The manager then comes up to me and says, "It's our fault. Don't worry about it." To be clear, this is only something I'd see in small-town America but never in a major city. So I was surprised that in Scotland's largest city, they were so trusting. (Really earning their reputation as the friendliest city in the UK). I was so touched that I promised I'd return to pay for my meal. I even kept my receipt so they'd know what to charge me. I came back the next morning, paid my bill, and, even though it's not required at all in the UK, I left a big tip as a thank you for trusting me and being so accommodating. When I come back to Glasgow, I will definitely come back.

When we first arrived, we weren't sure if they were open for service since it was such an odd time. We were promptly greeted and seated. despite the fact it wasn't what you would call even an early dinner time nor a late lunch time the service was on. When we open the menu, we were amazed at the variety of Indian dishes. It took us a while to decide what to order, as there were so many appealing choices . The waiter saw that we were taking a while and asked if we had any questions, and if we would like any recommendations. We finally made our decision. We ordered a south Indian garlic, chili with chicken, chicken, korma, an order of garlic, naan the tray of three dips, and an order of papadom. Though the dips and papadom were a nice warm up, it was the manes that were the stars of the meal. Both entrées had wonderful layers of flavor, each of which complemented the other. The chicken in both entrées was juicy and tender, We had asked for both to be medium spiced, and they were prepared to perfection. We both agreed that it was the best Indian food we had ever had over the years . It appeared that it is a popular establishment as it filled up with customers during the course of our meal. Each table appeared to be getting the great service that we had.

Got some sort of spiced rice (not sure) with it, and I also ordered the Aloo Gobi, which was perfectly done. Some mixed vegetable pickle on the side spiced up every bite. SO GREAT! Check it out.

Rather than the "cram as many in as you can" mantra of most Glaswegian Indian establishments, this place is vast but densely populated with tables. Thankfully this is not simply an all style and no substance kind of place and as much care has been taken with the menu as with the aesthetics. While it's always a risk proclaiming a Glaswegian curry house the best in the city, Balbir's is without question in the upper tier along with the likes of Mother India's Cafe, Shish Mahal and Dhabba. The banquet, in which staff tailor make a meal for your party depending on your dietary requirements and taste preferences, has gained a reputation as being the choice of the city's true curry connoisseurs, with friendly, affable staff rarely getting it wrong with their recommendations. Popadoms and a spice dip...very nice. Mini potato flatbread with chickpeas... Personally my favourite. Spicy salmon very well seasoned. Deep fried chills... Burnt the mouth right off me. Mains 2 chicken 2 lamb and 1 paneer. All very nice. The chicken ones where nice very similar to each other and quite creamy. If I didn't eat the deep fried chilli I would say that the chicken dishes were very mild. The lamb ones nice also but again very similar to each other. Paneer was tasty to. At this point I am completely stuffed no more food can go into my mouth. White flag!!! I opted for an espresso for finish! All in all a good meal. Very modern inside I'd have no problems going back.
