Such a fab night and meal at Dakhin! They accommodated our group and there were dishes and drinks aplenty. The dosas are a showstopper, but don't sleep on the side of black chickpeas, which was flavorful and hearty. Lots of choices for most dietary requirement, too. This South Indian Restaurant is an excellent choice for an Indian meal in Glasgow. The storefront is a bit understated for this second-level shop. The interior was surprisingly spacious and pleasant in appearance. We were seated right away by the window. Our server attended to us quickly and did a great job during our visit. The menu offered several South Indian favorites including dosas and idlis. I started with the Rasam Soup, which had a bit of a kick. For my main, I opted for the Mysore Chicken Koli. It was terrific. It was accompanied by Thosai Thatt which included three different types of bread. My colleague had a lamb dish which he also enjoyed. I finished with a Masala Chai which was only fair. Overall, I really enjoyed my meal. The spices positively challenged my tastebuds while dining in a lovely atmosphere. The final cost was about £56. At £28 per person, it was a pretty good deal. 100% Gluten Free! My first meal in Glasgow was at @dakhinglasgow which was warming, delicious, and awakened my senses for an incredible adventure in Scotland. I began with papadums which came with spicy sauces, a lovely starter. Then to the mamsam(lamb) pepper fry, outstanding with a pretty intense heat. I wanted more! Then to mamsam nilgiri w/mimmakai annam. A beautiful dish that settled me down after a spicy dish. Impeccable service as well. One must remember that in Europe meals are not rushed. We had dinner here and yhe service was great. The place is modern and clean inside with very good variety of dishes. Also has great lunch Tahli & early dinner prix fix menu as well. Visited the Dakhin last night for the first time. Had heard their menu was really clearly marked in terms of dairy and none of their dishes contain egg. Result! It's so nice to be able to go somewhere and not ask what can be made vegan etc. We were a table of six but service was really quick. The restaurant wasn't that busy at it was only 5:30pm. Although their wine menu doesn't make wines veggie or vegan friendly, a quick Google search confirmed that my choice was suitable. They brought out a selection of dips, curried coconut and poppadoms. So delicious and the colours were beautiful. Next up was spicy potato dumplings, which were insanely tasty with a fierce kick. The side salad of peppers, cucumber and lettuce cooled things down a bit and made the dish perfect. Next up was the okra curry with assorted lentil and rice pancakes. One with coriander and coconut, one with red onion and one with tomatoes. So filling but super tasty. Brought two home to eat later. I was really full after dinner, which was great as there's no vegan-friendly desserts. Had a wee cup of mint tea instead, to counteract all the spices. It came to £30 each for a table of 6 people with 4 people drinking wine (early dinner deal for the two courses, check out their website). Very reasonable given the excellent quality of food and friendly service. Their beautiful, colourful South Indian food really stood out. Can't wait to go back! read more

Dakhin really is fantastic for people with dietary requirements, I can see why it's so popular. I think their menu is 100% gluten free and their vegetarian options which contain dairy are clearly marked. At £10-12 a curry - not including sides - it is a tad more expensive than I can normally justify spending on a main, but they do half price mains on Sunday afternoons (Saturdays too, I think) and on early evenings. We shared starters, two types of flavoured rice (opted not to order the plain one), curries, a MASSIVE dosa, and a selection breads. With an Irn Bru my share came to around £19, which for two courses and sides and a drink I thought was pretty good. No vegan desserts but with mains and sides so varied and delicious I can make do without a sorbet. Staff were attentive and very helpful when we were all trying to decide what to order; there were 5 of us at a vegan meetup and we all wanted to eat everything we could! The Dakhin is one of those places I always forget about when going for a meal with the Mr - it just doesn't do it for me as a coupley kind of place. But for big groups it's ace. Every couple of months a group of around 10 of us have a catch up here - like we did last weekend! The Dakhin serves South Indian cuisine (it's sister restaurant The Dabba - at the next corner down - specialises in North Indian foods) - which I love. Each time I come here, I try something different - current favourite though, is the poondu milagai (spicy chicken, tomatoes & peppers). I've never had anything I wasn't crazy about. They do a 5pm deal which is 50% off all main courses on their full menu ( not limited like other deals of that nature). And they do a loyalty card for further discounts. The staff have always been super friendly and accommodating when we've been here - very helpful when explaining dishes etc. Their's also a really large menu - quite evenly spread between chicken, lamb and vegetarian courses (no idea if any are vegan). All in all, probably one of the best Indian restaurants in Glasgow - but it's fairly expensive, so make sure you grab a deal. read more

Yesterday morning I woke up with a craving for Dosa's which ended with a trip to Dakhin. It specialises in South Indian Cuisine and it has a menu with around 8 different Dosa options. First impressions were good. It's recently been renovated and was very bright with a good view out onto Merchant city. The staff were friendly and seemed very attentive. They were keen to suggest options when asked and ran through plenty of different styles of dish to help us pick. At this point it's important to mention the prices. They were exceptionally high. A veggie Dosa was the same price as you would get a steak elsewhere. The food would have to be epic to match up to costs involved. I went for a veggie Dosa for main, a pint of Belhaven and sharing three starters. Out of the dumplings, (yes dumplings), haddock and spinach starters. My favourite was the haddock and least liked was the Dumplings. (Sad times) They all looked like normal small portion bites of Indian food that you would get in other restaurants. Pretty similar to pakora. For main I had a veggie Dosa. It was huge and looked impressive, but to be honest it tasted very plain and a bit bland. Not awful but just a bit boring.... My pint of Belhaven was good though. I am afraid my impression of the place got worse as the meal went on. They did not tell us we were on pre theatre prices and dishes, it was good on the wallet, but in terms of the service we got a bit of a shock when were brought the bill without asking for it. Nobody had been to see us to offer desserts or more drinks. When the bill was put down we were told they needed the table back by 7.30. Basically we had 10 mins to vacate the premises. It does mention this on the website, but we did not know and it should have been explained when we first arrived. All in it was not an awful dinner. It was actually all fine, the main thing I would take away from it was the price. It is crazy expensive and charging for fairly average food. Go not far round the corner to Kool Ba and you will get far tastier food and at better prices. (Although of course no Dosa's) read more

Regulars to my reviews will know I'm a long termer at The Dhabba. The Dakhins northern relative restaurant. I've only been here once before 8 years ago... Popped in tonight for a wee change and I have to say...WOW. I do like Dosas, a lot. So I opted for a vegetarian dosa with sambal broth that comes with it. Fiona went for a sumptuous prawn dish. What with me being a non regular here, I've popped some wee photos to help show how great the food is seeing as I can't remember the names of the dishes lol. If you are hesitant about trying southern Indian food, don't be. It's an absolute delight and it was packed!! I'll have to get around to posting my review for the banana leaf in the west end. It's a simpler version of here, but equally as tasty. If you fancy a nice night out, this should be on your list. You gotta eat here - For Sure! :-D read more

The food was divine, 10 stars! The service was a negative 7. They took our forks after the starter and never brought back any cutlery with our main dish. It was very hard to get refills on water. They tossed out our leftovers, which we asked to take away. We waited a very long time for the check. They were not understaffed. read more

I was so excited when we decided on our Saturday night outing to the Dahkin. Something a little different for us. I booked our table for 6pm it was rather empty at that time - I suppose it was a bit early. My thoughts were great we can take a bit of time over our food. Sometime you can be in and out in no time. Firstly the menu is massive and the majority of the dishes are vegetarian - expensive vegetarian dishes of around £16+ per dish. I opted for the Vegi dosa for mains. We shared a couple of starters Fish type of pakora and a cheese type dumpling. Food was all very pleasant. Not great selection of beers however I went with a Belhaven to wash it down. Now for some horrific service I have ever experienced. Our plates were in the process of being cleared and the manager slapped the bill on the table and requested that we must leave the table "we need the table back" WHAT!! Now we are still sitting in a half empty restaurant. When I asked why there was no desert he informed us that we were on a Pre Theatre table that finished at 7:30pm! Not one point of the night did we get told about this. The manager didn't really care after we express Our lack of communication. Not the best and I won't be going back anytime soon! read more

Dakhin is a rather informal looking restaurant, almost with a "cafe" type feel. Its minimal, has bare wooden tables and simple furnishings. It should therefore, in my opinion be focusing on simple food at a relatively good price, given the vibe of the place, i.e. a no fuss kinda place. Also considering that the vast majority of dishes are vegetarian you would expect it to be good value (not to diss veggie food, as I am quite partial to a veggie or 5, a day). Now, as mentioned, I'm not a huge carnivore and don't expect to eat meat for every meal, but I expected to see some difference in price between the meat dishes and veggie dishes. But, to be honest most of the veggie dishes in Dakhin were pretty much similarly priced. On this particular evening I opted for the vegetable biriyani. Priced at £16 for a very simple plate of (fired?) rice and essentially what was some peas and onions thrown in. I cannot really fault the dish, it was really very tasty, however, at the end of the day, something which was 95% rice should not be charged at those prices. The dish was accompanied with a Pachadi, of coconut which was kinda like a riata. It was decent, but not exactly a standout. It must be said the staff were incredibly helpful on the night and helped us make some good decisions when ordering. Less helpful however was to be told while ordering that we were in fact on the pre-theater menu while being given the normal menu. This caused all sorts of confusion when we were told some dishes would cost us extra (but what they meant was there was a supplementary charge to the discounted rates). Confused? We were. Another disastrous moment occurred at the end of the meal, when we were effectively told they needed the table back in 5 minutes and promptly brought us the bill as we were "on the pre-theater". Again, mass confusion, as we thought we had dinned A La Carte. Nonetheless, we had to forgo the deserts and swiftly make our exit, much earlier than anticipated. I'm not really sure what I expected from the Dakhin to be honest, as I've found their sister restaurant down the street to be an all too similar affair. With so many incredibly good Indian restaurants in our fair city, that offer excellent value, I honestly cannot see the appeal of visiting Dakhin, unless you have a particular penchant for South Indian food (although I could list some much better alternatives). All in all, I cannot see myself heading back unfortunately. read more

I've been tempted by the Dakhin for some time since enjoying a meal at its sister restaurant the Dhabba just down the street on Candleriggs. So at long last, I got together with some friends for a meal here on a busy Saturday evening. Despite the restaurant was full, we only had a couple of minutes wait for a table for four. The service was excellent - taking our coats, a drink order and serving an appetiser within five minutes of being seated. The food is truly outstanding. Lots of spinach, ginger, chilli, and spices. No tikka masala type dishes here, real authentic south-Indian cuisine with plenty of vegetarian and gluten-free dishes available. And the prices weren't particularly expensive either which is always a bonus. We ordered starters and mains to share. My MAMSAM PEPPER FRY was incredibly flavoursome and tender (lamb) and just the perfect heat level for me. The KOLI KAIMA KABAB; minced chicken with ginger chilli and garlic starter went down well too. For mains, we ordered a dish each, a paper dosa, mixed breads and rice to share. The dosa is always impressive when delivered to the table, and it was the perfect accompaniment. We shared a mix of hot and fiery garlic chicken, spinach-rich lamb and two other dishes all bursting with flavour and generous portion size. I can't wait to come back here, the food really is outstanding, in a city of great curry houses. If half-stars were allowed, I'd score the Dakhin 4.5 - only let down by the need of a lick of paint - it's getting a little grubby in places, but such a minor gripe, I'll happily round-up to the full 5*. read more

I've heard and read great things so I had really high expectations when dining here last night. The smell as you walk in is amazing so I was really looking for to my meal. The restaurant is big and bright and it wasn't overly busy. The staff are friendly and attentive but not overly. The menu is good and clearly marked for dietary requirements which for me is awesome. Normally I have to ask or check before going somewhere that there is vegan options. So the food. It was nice but I wasn't blown away. I really wanted to love it and I did enjoy my meal but it certainly didn't live up to my expectations. I had a lentil curry dish that promised green chillies on the menu. It wasn't spicy in the slightest which was a bit disappointing it could have done with some extra flavour. I also a had the selection of 3 breads and wasn't really that impressed with any of them. In fact I found them all a bit bland. It's pricey as well. The mains were half price but the full price would have been outrageous. Dinner for 2 which was 2 mains 2 sides and 2 pint's was £30. Maybe I'm just spoiled with all the great 5pm deals on offer elsewhere. We went in today after a co-worker of mine mentioned that their entire menu is gluten free. Whhattt?? This I need to see! So, we popped in after work (about 5:30, during pre-theatre prices). We were the second table in the door so no issues with them needing the table back (granted, this is also Monday.) The pre-theatre deal is half price mains, which I believe was good until 6:30pm. I'm usually no fan of Indian food, but I've been trying to be brave and find some new things that I'll like. So, my vegetarian partner and I opted to split a couple dishes. We started out with something similar to pakora, made with spinach and onions fried in gram flour. They were really tasty. They also brought out some crispy chip-like things in a bowl with a selection of sauces - the green one, which definitely involved coriander and chilies, was my favourite! For mains, I ordered a spicy paneer dish and he ordered a rice and veggie dish with a creamy sauce. When they put two flames next to a dish on the menu, you should believe them - OMG that paneer dish was so spicy! Our waiter noticed us draining our glasses of water and mango lassi and came to our rescue, though - he had the kitchen add more coconut milk, which brought the heat down to manageable levels. The rice was alright - we liked it better without the yogurt sauce. We also ordered a sampler of breads (yay for gluten free!) and really liked two of the three. Service was great - attentive without being smothering, and we didn't feel rushed. It sounds like you might want to clarify the rules for pre-theatre dining if you book before 6:30 though - see the numerous 2 star reviews for more on that. While I didn't find that magical dish that will make me love Indian food, it was enjoyable, and I'm happy to give it another try! read more

We were recently in Glasgow visiting from the US when we asked a local bartender for a recommendation for Indian food, she directed us to Dakhin. Where we are from the Indian restaurants do not indicate if they are northern or southern cuisine, we have since discovered they are mostly northern. Based on this many of the items on the menu were new to us. The staff was super helpful, they asked some questions and suggested some dishes. We tried the Batata Bonda, Kozhi Melagu Chettinard, Kodi Biryani and lamb chops in a sauce (not sure of the name). Everything was excellent!! We enjoyed every dish they brought us. Sadly, I will not be able to be a repeat customer but would definitely recommend this place for its excellent food and service. read more

My favourite Indian. I love it here. The menu is really clearly marked for those with dietary requirements and the staff are super knowledgeable on top. All their vegetarian options are actually vegan with the vegetarian options marked with another sign. We went for Sunday lunch so we had half priced mains. Together with a selection of breads, rice, a starter and a drink it came to £22 (including service charge). For a really lovely meal I thought that was pretty good to pay. Can understand it being slightly less enjoyable if the main was full price. Another reason I love it here are the breads. Being vegan its really rare to get anything other than popadoms as a bread but there's many options to pick from and all are lovely - including the massive dosa which is at least 2 foot! Lovely staff, great food, many vegan options (including beer). Whats not to love? read more

I like to visit this place when Im heading to the Frutimarket or City halls during the Celtic Connections festival. You'll find none of the usual fare here - no wishy washy kormas or utterly western tikka masalas. In fact, the first time I came here I had never even heard of most of the dishes on offer here. This place offer traditional southern indian culinary delights - very different to the just as delightful northern Indian that most people will be used to. The staff are second to none and are very helpful and knowledgable and always give good reccomendations. And although this rather unassuming place has pretty lifeless decor, if you enjoy Indian food and fancy something totally different, this is the place to go. It may not be everyones cup of tea but I would certainly tell all my friends to at least try it. I think its great. read more

Being completely new to the beautiful city of Glasgow, and seeing the great reviews visited here with family for lunch. Food was okay, not as great as thought of after going through many other reviews. Good view outside through window. The bad part is the attitude of the waiter. He was rude from the beginning, less attentive and slow like a sloth in welcoming us or taking order. No one bothered to ask whether we need any more food items or any concern after serving and before I had to walk over ans ask for the bill. Of course he did not miss out to warn 'preemptively' of possible scratching on the table by our 3 year old daughter on the already worn table, just before serving the food. Anyway had our meal, handed over some tips despite his shabby waiting; left much disappointed. MY ADVICE - If you're looking for a place to enjoy Indian food, where host respects Indian and non-Indian guests at-par; go elsewhere. I've found myself several other nearby Indian restaurants great on that aspect. That place has 3-4 Indian food places within just 0.1-0.2 miles. read more

The Dakhin is Glasgow's only Indian restaurant specialising in cusine from the South of India and is sister restaurant to The Dhabba which focuses on offering North Indian dishes. I am not a huge fan of the décor in The Dakhin as I find the black tables and chairs set out in neat rows to be a bit too canteen looking. You can tell that with the green paint on the walls and the abundance of foliage that they are trying to create a tropical atmosphere but I'm not 100% convinced they've pulled it off! However it isn't too much of a stretch to over look this as the staff are so welcoming and attentive and the food is wonderful. If you love Indian food but feel you are stuck in a rut and order the same old favourites over and over again then a visit to The Dakhin should sort you out. The menu will probably have a lot of things you've never heard of but the friendly staff are more than happy to offer recommendations based on your personal tastes. I love the Dosas which are pancakes made from rice and lentils and come with a variety of fillings. The curry type dishes on the a la catre menu are tasty and a lot lighter and not as stodgy as your usual Indian favourites. They also have a reasonably priced takeaway menu so if you fancy ordering something different in to eat at home in front of Britain's Got Talent on a Saturday night then you could give The Dakhin a go! read more

As a purveyor of the perfect pakora and a devotee of a delectable dal, I have over the years frequented the vast majority of Glasgow's excellent array of Indian restaurants. Until recently however I had not experienced the veritable taste sensation that is Dakhin. First things first, those in search of a Tikka Masala best look elsewhere, Dakhin specialises in the finest South Indian cuisine, the dishes are packed full of coconut, ginger and green chillies and the smell alone is enough to have the taste buds river dancing over the tongue. Dakhin serves up plenty of tasty options for vegetarians and is also the perfect place for those with gluten intolerances, the vast majority of the menu is gluten free - tasty rice and lentil flour pancakes are served in place of breads. To start with, my trusty companion and I shared the Keerai Bhajji (spinach, green chilli and onion mixed and fried with flour) and the Botata Bonda (mashed potato, curry leaves, chilli and coconut). Both took on the appearance of pakora but the taste provided something different entirely, the Botata Bonda was probably my highlight of the night - I could easily have polished off a basket or three. Having opened the hunger floodgates I moved on to the Avial, a mix of tasty vegetables cooked in coconut, yoghurt and green chillies. It was absolutely delicious, clean plates all round! Glasgow has been recognised as the UK Curry Capital on a number of occasions and it's well deserved, there are few cities that offer such a wonderful variety of Indian cuisine!
